I think that what Kadi was saying was that Miko doesn't mean shrine maiden, but I think that Miko can still be translated as Miko with a note explaining its meaning.

Kadi wrote:That reminds me: We need to decide what to do with "miko". The usage isn't limited to the traditional Japanese shrine maidens one in red and white but refers to girls with the role to serve gods who/whose ancestors cultivated certain skills in that regard. Just like witches aren't just "female magic users"... I suggest we go with "miko" and a note explaining the usage whenever the word appears for the first time in each volume.
So....we actually should use Priestess? (I say we....Kadi. )

DAMN YOU ALL YOU'RE TOO FAST FOR ME.

It's as Hikari said. Shrine maiden wrong, miko okay, especially with a footnote. Hobo's priestess works great on its own, but interferes with hime-miko (hime = princess).

Therefore I support Hikari's suggestion for now: King of Swords, Miko of the Sword and for 『太刀の媛巫女』, we use Hime-miko of the Long Sword/Longsword.

Holy maiden.... no. Too many unnecessary implications, I think.

Sorry, the Commune bug is hard to get rid of.

So, this is resolved until someone thinks of something better?

Edit- hime being princess, and miko possibly meaning priestess, would holy priestess / priestess not delineate between the two well enough to not have to use a foot note?

If they were from a Tarot deck it would be probably the Page of Swords (http://www.paranormality.com/tarot_page_of_swords.shtml) (http://www.tarotteachings.com/tarot-mea ... pages.html) ;)

Hm, what is a hime-miko?

So a hime-miko would be a Princess-Priestess? (I think Priest(ess)-Princess would sound better ;)) - Like the old Monarchs which were King and Priest (before they did became King and God) in one person?

媛巫女, Hime-miko. Literally: Princess-shrine maiden

In the universe, they receive a special education from the Japanese government/"whatever History Committee" regarding magic and serve the government. They are chosen based on magical talents and are put to use based on those. One example is Yuri with her "Spiritual Vision"(?). She is sometimes asked to have a look at magical items to determine their origin/use.

Hrm.....the terms being dependent on the story....yeah, leave it as Miko (or hime-miko), I haven't looked into this book at all. Just add a footnote ("This literally means....." with the kanji if you want to be nice.)

This is just a question but could 媛巫女 be translated into Miko-Hime?? Rather than Hime-Miko??? Is there a difference between the two?

IMO, it depends on if you want to say a princess being miko, a miko being princess, or both being it at the same time. I think.

Well, it's literally read as "Hime (媛) - Miko (巫女)" so, if you say it out loud, it would be Hime-Miko.......while written the other way it would more than likely mean the same thing, however straight romanizing it is generally the way to go for tricky things like this.

@Kira, I agree too.....just.....need to start running again before I get translating.

I do agree with you, but I just thought that maybe Miko-Hime might sound more fluent.

New characters that haven't been added to the list yet.

万里谷光: Mariya Hikari?
罗濠: Luo Hao, Luo Cui Lian
陆鹰化: Lu Ying Hua
孙悟空: Son Goku? or Sun Wu Kong??

and there also others, but I don't know how their names are written in Japanese. So I'll just list out a few I know, but it's not gonna be the full name. Only their first name.

Angela
Alice
Alexander-Black Prince, the Campione of London
Guinevere?
Tezcatlipoca- God that J.P.S. Killed.
Artemis(Greek), Diana(Roman)

and a few others I don't remember...
