Magi no Figur
Is that the translation you get? Whats the original text? What's the Romaji? "No" was just a Japanese particle without any meaning right? At least we dont have a "no" in our language, that I am aware of. What is the description of this Magi no Figur? If this really were German I would say it should be Magiefigur (or Magie-Figur) which would be in English Magic Figure, but that would be a noun I never heard so like that. In German we would it probably paraphrase it as "magische Erscheinung". Or if that Magi no Figur were a Magic branch, then I would probably call it Körpermagie (English would it probably be called something like Magic of the Body)

btw. I thought at first as I saw the title of your post "Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon:German" that you were interested in creating a German translation of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon and were asking for permission or help with that. ;) --Darklor 14:46, 29 November 2011 (CST)

Ah, if it is used as a Magic Focus, than I would say we would probably paraphrase it as "magische Figur" (English probably like a Magic Object) and a noun as a combination of those two words were "Magiefigur", but probably we wouldnt it call it like that ourself. How is this "Magi Figur" described? (Is it described as humanoid?)

Is that word "Floren" used as in florae/floras? or as in Trauerflor (which would be black ribbon/crape) --Darklor 15:47, 29 November 2011 (CST)

Editing for Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon
Hi hi, so i'm dropping by on your talk page to ask, how do i apply edits and everything...like I mean, most of my edits are going to be major and heavy edits, so is there a way for it the page to show the edits, and wait for approval from translators? I'm new to editting on these online wiki's, since i've helped edit the Akai Ito VN translation, however it was simply link the page on a page document, place original lines, then put the editted line under it, and continue on like that, which i then sent to the translator, and after checking the lines he would then add in the appropriate ones.

Hahah no problem, I had wanted to give back to the community, since being a free leecher and all that doesn't really sit well with me. But it's not that easy editting this novel, since i think the language the author uses is quite convoluted and fancy, so for now i'm going to be focusing on making it read decently in English, before anything else such as extravagant descriptions and all that. Skarlath 16:25, 7 December 2011 (CST)

Wait, isn't it supposed to be 'Editing'? --larethian 19:39, 7 December 2011 (CST)

:Ahahah now that's really embarrassing, sorry about that. It was a rushed job, since I had been doing this during the exam period, so I made this without checking too much. Actually you'll probably find a couple of typo's due to the fact that I normally type quickly, and usually let MS Word to autocorrect. So my apologies in advance if anyone finds anything wrong. Skarlath 21:31, 8 December 2011 (CST)

And Yoake, there are a couple of phrases/sentences that I can't make sense of, so check the discussion page for the prologue, and I'll put the parts that I don't know what the translation means, and it'd be nice if you explained them. Skarlath 21:31, 8 December 2011 (CST)

Yeah, it took too long, so I'm going to edit the rest without looking at the raws. I'll leave my Japanese learning time to be when I translate Date A Live. --jonathanasdf 22:20, 2 January 2012 (CST)
異空間
Literally it would be like "weird space" or "abnormal space" or something but I think it can generally be translated to "different dimension" or "alternate dimension". Eg. Fuzetsu in Shana could be considered a 異空間. This is based on what it would be in Chinese though, I don't know if it has a different meaning in Japanese and it might depend on context. Why are you asking me this anyways? --jonathanasdf 16:43, 25 December 2011 (CST)

jonathanasdf is right. Itsuten has both 異空間 and 異世界, and that's what it means. "Different/Alternate/Other/Foreign". --larethian 20:56, 25 December 2011 (CST)

If you're sure it's a proper noun then you can try checking the wiki and see if they have anything for it, otherwise I think you can give it any fitting name depending on the context (ie. what's in it, how it is created, or any other kind of inspirations like that) --jonathanasdf 14:47, 26 December 2011 (CST)

No problem, I don't doubt your understanding. VN players are usually very strong in vocab even when they are self taught. Just thought you need a possible English word for it XD --larethian 12:59, 28 December 2011 (CST)

So, after seeing the context in Vol1 History I think "different dimensions" or even "parallel dimensions/universes" might fit better than Differing Space since it doesn't seem to be being used as a proper noun. Eg. "As a solution, people copied the Divine States to different dimensions." --jonathanasdf 14:24, 9 January 2012 (CST)

I see.. I didn't know that they were just floating in the sky and isn't actually in a different dimension... At least from Vol1 History there's no way to tell that. Ok then. --jonathanasdf 11:07, 10 January 2012 (CST)
Dunno why my edits were reverted, they were correcting minor errors. The current version (Chap 1,V8) has my edits in them anyway though, perhaps I just don't know how this works. -WanWanDiscoFever

I rolled back the change to 7.62mm, as the light novel raws explicitly stated that it was 162mm. However, I accidentally reverted the edit from 'learly' to 'early', which I promptly fixed. After about 5 minutes, I realized how stupid a 162mm bullet actually was, and changed it back to your edit. Hey hikari, i was wondering if it was ok if i went back through all of the HnA translations so far and replaced Tooyama/Tohyama with "Tōyama", as "Tōyama" seems to be the proper spelling so far as i can tell. As it is your translation, i won't do it without your go ahead. Bzk3000 21:11, 16 May 2011 (UCT)

If you're going to do blackburn letters for one name, you're going to have to do it for all the names in all the novels. Are you sure you want to do that? It's not as if Tohyama is an incorrect romanization. - YoakeNoHikari 22:40, 16 May 2011 (UCT)

Nor did i say tohyama was an incorrect spelling. Someone else had mentioned that some of the volumes had tohyama while other had had tooyama, and i was just trying to figure out which one should be used or if you wanted to leave tohyama as is. That's why i asked before actually doing the aforementioned change. You're translating, and if you believe that Tohyama is correct, then you are right in this stance. Bzk3000 23:01, 16 May 2011 (UCT)
I'm fine with anything, but like you, I'd prefer for everything to be standardized. The one that I've been using all along is Tohyama, and I think that's been used the most, so I'd appreciate if you could change all Tooyama to Tohyama. - YoakeNoHikari 23:27, 16 May 2011 (UCT)

Alright, it looks like every "Tooyama" has been changed to "Tohyama", so I think we are good. Also, while checking, I noticed in volume 3 that Kinichi has an apostrophe (Kin'ichi), and I was wondering if that was a mistake or if it was cause of an accent or a different translation. I left is as was, but it is at the part where Vlad changes into HSS. Bzk3000 00:16, 17 May 2011 (UCT)

Ah, when the kanji or whatever ends with the character ん or ン (n), the ' is used to denote it as such. Think about it this way, you can have kin-ichi, or kini-chi. See the difference? The ' is used to make it clear that the 'n' is its own character. However, when romanizing, it isn't always necessary. That's the thing about romaji. Personally, I don't think the readers are advanced enough to tell the difference, so I'd leave it out. - YoakeNoHikari 00:29, 17 May 2011 (UCT)
Oh, thought I might let you know this (though it's most likely a troll post) after S2 ended, some guy appeared saying this on /a/:

So, I hate to be a tease, but... Over the last year or so I've been translating the Horizon novels for myself as part of learning Japanese during college, and actually used the first 200 pages or so of Volume 2-A as part of a project to translate a piece of literary work from Japanese into English, and scored a flawless 100 percent. So far I have 1A/B and 2A/B translated, with 3A about 178 1/2 pages so far done. Is there a specific place you would prefer to have me look into uploading them, such as Baka-Tsuki, or just a plain Mediafire archive upload? It'll be a few days before I can, as I'm away from home right now attending a funeral, but it'll be no problem once I get home.
Haha, no worries at all, I quite enjoy working on the scans, as the translation sounds better like you said, I'll more than happy to follow you up on that, making a bulk set and uploading them all at the same time, that's why it seems I've not posted much since.
Apologies in advance, but I want to know if you still want to translate Hidan no Aria. What makes you stop?
Questions and Answers
1. Are you working on the light novels or the web novels? What's the difference?

I'm working from the Chinese translations of the light novels. The web novels were published before the light novels, but the light novels contain more content in terms of character development and extra scenes. In addition, some lines in the web novels were toned down in the light novels. (And there's more fanservice in the light novels.)

2. When are you going to translate the Afterwords or The Late Great Favorite?

Uh, probably some far distant time in the future. (read: never) The Afterwords and the Late Great Favorite bear no impact on the story itself. They are merely the author's thoughts as each novel comes to a close. Hence why their priority is very, very low.

3. Hey, dude, the chapters are out of order! Why did you translate Chapter 9 before Chapter 8?

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter 8 before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

4. So when's your next chapter coming out?

If I got a dollar every time someone asked me this, I would be able to do this for a living. Click on the User Page tab on the top left corner and you will find my progression on the latest chapter as well as a rough estimate on when the chapter will be complete. And, no, it has been scientifically proven that asking me to work faster/harder does not improve translation speed.

5. Are you going to translate all the volumes?

Until otherwise stated, yes. Volume 5 may get delayed though, since it is a collection of side stories rather than advancing the main plot. We'll see what happens after the Nine Schools Competition.

6. I got the chapter summaries from somewhere else, may I post them in the forums?

Please don't. Last I heard, the chapter summaries flying everywhere absolutely killed all motivation for the translators. So...... Please don't. Please.
I just want to let you know, Dreyakis, I highly enjoy your translation. I've spent quite a bit of time as an editor for various fan translation groups (never for light novels though) and even those projects could cause a man's brain to explode. Translation is hard work and you are doing the best job I have seen on Baka-Tsuki. It is a pleasure to read your translated text, doubly so because the novels themselves are excellent. The novels have an addictive neutrality to them, and I am very happy that you are translating them for an entirely new section of the world to enjoy. ~BakaGrappler
Hey There... first of all just wanted to say how much i appreciate it that u are spending your freetime to translate this LN for us readers :) 2. Iwanted to ask u if u could get in contact with seitsuki who is supposed to work on chapter 8 of vol. 4 and ask if and when he is going to translate again and if not if he could share his already translated stuff regarding chapter 8 with u so u could translate the rest... Thanks in advance and again i really appreciate your work here :)

First of all, I believe Seitsuki is finished with the chapter, and he will upload it once his vocation is done (or whenever he wants to). Second, please don't ask translator when they will be done because it is kind of rude. --Breeze (talk) 15:41, 23 November 2012 (CST)
You're given free rein to complete the later volumes (except for NT Vol 2, since I don't know how many people will be 'crazy' enough to do that), including the incomplete ones. The other translators won't be working on it anyway.

Also, I might recruit you to do some of the earlier volumes (after the later volumes are complete). Nah, just kidding. I'll prefer that you work on the other side stories first, but that's your choice.--Teh Ping 10:14, 22 May 2011 (UCT)

I can't answer you through PM, so I'll just post this here. I've unlocked all the chapters for volume 1, except for prologue and afterword which you did. You can redo the other chapters, including chapter 1 and epilogue which I did. Just remember that people are also complaining about poor translations from 7-13, and I did 7-11. At the worst case scenario, you'll be asked to retranslate 7-13. (And as for the consistent translations thing, there's NT1 and NT4.) Bottom line, just tell me what needs rework, and I'll see if we'll proceed with the Index retranslations.--Teh Ping 23:18, 9 May 2012 (CDT)

For now, I'm really only considering 1 and maybe 12-13 after that. What I'm mainly concerned about are accuracy issues since they can't be corrected in editing, and from what I've seen of your translations, that isn't really an issue. Also, I'm not really too concerned with the consistency issue for NT. I'm only stressing it with 1 because people have brought it up and because I like the idea of having the 1st book a lot of people read in the series read as nice as possible. Js06 23:46, 9 May 2012 (CDT)

Can't argue with that. Good to have a good start. Ah, and tell those guys on 4chan that I'll be redoing 12 and 13, starting from June.--Teh Ping 23:49, 9 May 2012 (CDT)

Square Brackts for [GROUP]?
Hey Js06. I've been editing the previously-translated parts of Volume 15, and I was wondering: Joay left a lot of terms in brackets like [GROUP] and the like. Should I just remove all of those? Also, if you can, please check some sentences that I've commented on to make sure they stay close enough to the original: I was kinda grasping at straws when trying to make them make sense in English. CarVac 21:49, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

The brackets around GROUP were probably meant to emulate the Japanese-style quotation marks 『』 used in the novels, but they aren't really necessary. The Japanese like to put things in quotation marks to distinguish them in the same way capitalizing the word is sometimes used in English (e.g. Esper names like Meltdowner and AIM Stalker are put in quotes in the novels.) I used to puts things in quotes excessively in my translations because I was copying the Japanese usage, but I stopped recently.
I'll look over the changes you mentioned later today. Thanks for your work. --Js06 22:23, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Present Tenses vs. Past Tense?
Looking at your SS2 translations, I realized that you're doing them in past tense as opposed to present tense like you use in the other novels. Is the original material in past tense, or did you decide to start using more past tense? I do understand that the stories seem to have occurred before volume 16; is that why they're in past tense? It sounds more natural this way, but do we need to keep consistency with the other novels? CarVac 16:51, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Whoops! Sorry. I've been editing the other portions of volume 15 too long, and they're all blurring together in my head. Never mind then. I guess I should put those in past tense to match? (argh; so much work!) CarVac 17:18, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Hello Js06! :)

I'm [mailto:dorothy@marheavenj.net Dorothy], nice to meet you!
I'm sorry to bother (and forgive me for my bad English), I'm writing because I have a question about Kakine Teitoku (from Toaru Majutsu no Index vol.15)'s phrase...
I was updating a site I dedicated to him and writing his profile, I found a difficult...
The phrase is ムカついたかよ、チンピラ , so, could "mukatsuita" be intended as "you pissed me off"? I always found it translated as "that hurt", but isn't it more like "You offended me" that "you pissed me off?"? I'm confused about it... and I'm not an expert of Japanese, so I prefered to ask to you! >_< Thank you so much for your job, you really are a manna from heaven!! :) 1:22, 08 June, 2012.
You are correct. ムカついた is the past tense of the verb ムカつく which (in common usage) means "to be irritated" or "to be pissed off". - Js06 19:34, 7 June 2012 (CDT)
The format is better that way since the DimGray or DarkSlateGray color gives the feeling that the person is speaking in a low voice as compared to the normal black color. Yeah but english never puts brackets in speech marks. Normally they <small>smallify</small> the text but the readers don't like it when I try that, so I thought this would be the next best thing. Don't you agree?
Another option would be to use a different font but there is no guarantee that everyone will have that font, unless it's a default font installed with the OS. Dulling the color is the best option. Zero2001 - Talk - 22:15, 19 September 2012 (CDT)

The Japanese don't often put brackets in speech marks either, and I've yet to read books which smallify text(unless you can give me an example?). Actually, I'll probably write to the publisher scolding them for spoiling my eyes if they did, and not ever buy books published by them ever<!--this redundancy is on purpose--> again. Though I'm interested in reading it, I don't even have time to do so at the moment, so asking for translations is......<!--This incomplete sentence is on purpose--> --Pryun - Talk 05:05, 20 September 2012 (CDT)

Just my personal opinion here as a reader, I think the current format the translator uses is good enough, I think that most readers can easily get the context of the speech being thought, whispers etc. from inferring or the context has already been mentioned in the text. Zakashi (talk) 05:16, 20 September 2012 (CDT)
No actually, I've read it and there are parts where there is no mention that it is going to be a whisper/mutter except for the brackets. But Js06 is the one to decide, since he's the one translating it. If he has no problem with it then it's fine.

:Ahahah now that's really embarrassing, sorry about that. It was a rushed job, since I had been doing this during the exam period, so I made this without checking too much. ==異空間==

I apologize if I offended you in any way by reverting your edits, which were undoubtedly correct. -YoakeNoHikari 09:16, 21 September 2011 (CDT)

No, no. I'm saying I want someone who are willing to translate a volume can become a translator. If they find a person who can work with them in a single volume that will be fine. I just don't want people who just works on one chapter then finishes, if you get what I mean. I want someone with devotion to this project.

Hi, i'm wondering, what method actually you're using to translate High School DxD? I want to translate this project but i don't know how. I have a question are you using translator? Or you know Japanese good? I'm waiting for reply My user name "Damian-Uchiha20"

Just now while reading the manga, I found that 'Asia' is typed there as 'Aashia'. Does this differ from person to person who is translating? On personal note, 'Aashia' sounds better to use since 'Asia' is a continent. --Chancs 10:51, 13 January 2012 (CST)
In terms of pernouciation "Aashia" may sound right. However her name is based on are real actress, "Asia Argento".
Hey...why don't we put the chapter 'Revenge Knight' after the chapter 'Vol 03 Life 2' instead of before it. Then it will match the scenario better. --Chancs 15:05, 15 January 2012 (CST)
I don't know. That is why 'am asking him about this. But at present, the chapter no where matches after the 'Life 1' chapter. If read the part 8 of chapter 'Life 2' and the 'Revenge knight', it becomes clear. I can only speculate that there might be some publicatn mistakes etc. Well, it will depend on the supervisor. --Chancs 22:54, 15 January 2012 (CST)
Somehow,I hope you'll allow for some terminology to be in to english. It's kinda difficult to read if one wasn't versed in
Japanese. Especially stuff like 'oppai' and 'bishoujo', which do not have any connotations and sounds wierd in the sentences(e.g 'grope oppai' just sounds disjointed). I'd understand for Maou, Senpai, Kouhai, lolicon and endings though.
The word "Oppai" is one of the theme of this series so I want to leave it as it is since there will be lots of terminology relating to it appearing afterwords.
Edited the topic title to ask how should we go about the names of the characters. Now that we have more translators on the move, naming issues are bound to come around. I found a couple of them and wanted to know if we should just leave them as the translator for the respective volume suggests or if we should stick with the naming given by you, the project administrator. For example: "Sazechs Lucifer" and "Grefilia" on Vol 4 life 1 or "Sirzechs Lucifer" and "Grafia" as previously introduced. - Ajmc93 17:13, 12 February 2012 (CST)

That's why I propose that we create a Project-Specific Guidelines: Format, Names, and Terminology for High school DxD (similar to the one Toaru no Majustsu has)for this project soon. I would say go with "Sirzechs" and "Grafia" since those are the standardized names. -Hiro Hayase 18:29, 12 February 2012 (CST)

Hyoudu Issei is the official name that we are using on Baka-Tsuki, correct? And every one of Issei's friends and family (such as Bucho) call him by his nickname Ise, correct? I would like to make fix this as soon as possible when I can confirm this with you, since the translation is a bit inconsistent with the names for Issei. -Hiro Hayase 19:47, 10 February 2012 (CST)

Yeah, that's right. We keep the original Japanese name for the characters. So we also use -san, -chan, and -sama suffix is well. So just like you said it's Hyodou Issei but his nickname is Ise and everyone in the club calls him that.

I really think we should create a Project-Specific Guidelines: Format, Names, and Terminology (similar to the one Toaru no majustsu has)for this project soon. More characters are being introduced as it is being translated so we should have a consensus on the names of the other characters besides the main cast. I would like your permission to create one if possible. You can modify it later too. -Hiro Hayase 14:54, 12 February 2012 (CST)
Looking back at the idea, it might be a better idea to create the character/terminology guidelines on a separate page other than the bottom of the character introduction. For now its alright since only 3 volumes are translated, but we may have to do it later. I'll do it for you now so we save the trouble. What do you think? Also, is it alright if I change "Isei Hyodo" to "Issei Hyodou" on the character introduction page, since most of the translations use that? Same with "Koneko Tojo" into "Koneko Toujou"? -Hiro Hayase 21:33, 13 February 2012 (CST)
That includes Koneko and Shidou. Also, I'm going to delete all the information from Azazel (アザゼル, Azazeru) to the bottom since we already have all that information in the other page. -Hiro Hayase 22:35, 13 February 2012 (CST)
Even though volumes 8,9,10,11,12.. are almost translated there are volumes 5,6,7 that are not translated and that kills or restricts to move on to the latest volumes. Did you do this http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=User:Code-Zero&curid=18507&diff=171687&oldid=171670 or that wasn't you? --KuroiHikari (Talk | ) 18:41, 23 July 2012 (CDT)

Just wanted to thank you for all your hard work. Aleaccipiter 08:09, 26 July 2012 (CDT)

Wondering since you translated most of Highschool DxD. What exactly is Kiba's Scared Gear? The swrod handle or does it reside in him?

Well his Sacred Gear abilities allows him to create swords. Saying that he can recreate sword from the sword handle he is holding to and also even create a whole new sword. He can even create the sword on his foot.

Since the other editors said OK to my request to help, I would still like to. I'm not looking to edit with intent to adapt to english like I know someone will eventually but I'd like to help proofread and fix some of the grammer in the unadapted sections. I won't add my name to the editors list either. If you're OK with that much let me know. Thanks. Fallton13 06:00, 6 August 2012 (EDT)

All good then. If the editors said okay,　then thats all you need. Thanks for the help.

Also, hop by and pick up a volume of this series when you're done with DxD, I would love to have you there to make it lively ^^ --Akuma 09:17, 8 August 2012 (CDT)

I thought he's gonna make a poll on what to translate next, once DxD is up-to-date, and let the readers decide? or I may be wrong :)
