1. Are you working on the light novels or the web novels? What's the difference?

I'm working from the Chinese translations of the light novels. The web novels were published before the light novels, but the light novels contain more content in terms of character development and extra scenes. In addition, some lines in the web novels were toned down in the light novels. (And there's more fanservice in the light novels.)

2. Hey, dude, the chapters are out of order! Why did you translate Chapter Y before Chapter X?

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter X before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

3. So when's your next chapter coming out?
If I got a dollar every time someone asked me this, I would be able to do this for a living. Click on the User Page tab on the top left corner and you will find my progression on the latest chapter as well as a rough estimate on when the chapter will be complete. And, no, it has been scientifically proven that asking me to work faster/harder does not improve translation speed. I am working off of PST in California, so do take that into account when looking for the new chapter on my update days.
Comments
thanks you the updates. much much love to the translators/editors and novelist. Now this is just my senseless querulous lamentation but whats up with the whole focus on the baffling explosion? I mean didn't the Great Asian Alliance just commit an act of aggression while unprovoked? shouldnt the japanese gov try to put pressure on the alliance for the incursion, though yanagi's comment in vol7ch13 has merit, so maybe its a "opps i forgot i hated you" reminder. or is it probably easier to explain as "behind the scene" politics not currently part of the main story. of course USNA wasn't really involve, plus another unknown threat is kind of a big deal and affects them so thats fine if they want to figure out the mystery of the explosion. Keisanichi (talk) 22:51, 21 April 2013 (CDT)

Well, from what I understood, the Asian Alliances actions weren't exactly official, but that's not the problem. And Japan sent their strategy-class magician there to pressure the Alliance. The problem (for the rest of the world) is the explosion itself, it obliterated the Alliance's fleet and a big base in one blast and killed its official strategy-class magician at the same time. The USNA figured it was caused by direct matter-to-energy conversion, and that is troubling. This happens when antimatter meets matter, and even 1 gram of antimatter is hard to make, but that was a 1kg explosion, so even if the antimatter mass is added to the matter mass, it's a lot of antimatter. But antimatter was not used here, it was magic. Transporting antimatter is a bit of a hazard, considering this world is 100% matter, and a transporter can be intercepted, magic can't. If Japan wanted, they could make a crater out of New York or Washington and the USNA would have no idea until it happened. So in order to better understand this explosion and how it reacts, they reactivated that 30km black hole sandwich maker, and it's hinted that it won't go that well for them. Also, the fact that Material Burst can destroy a war fleet in the blink of an eye means the rules of war have changed, no longer can the armies fight it on like in the old days, now magicians are the center pieces and maybe some assassins mixed in there. Finding out who the hell can nuke an army like that at his will is also important and it drives the story forward, let's not forget we are talking about high school, international politics are a bit over that. That's about it as far as I can tell, I hope I answered your questions and not angered Dreyakis in the process. Making a novel discussion board out of his page is not nice. --Tortex (talk) 18:48, 29 April 2013 (CDT)
A quick question. How fast do the Chinese translate the light novels? ~ThePagemaster

Excuse me. Supposed, that we live long enough to see the ending of MKnR series and Dreyakis-san and other translators finished translating it. There are still many interesting scripts, light novels, and other literature that hasn't/haven't been released in English by official provider(unlicensed). Question, Are Dreyakis-san going to translate any of those literature that Dreyakis-san interested in? Besides MKnR, is there any literature that Dreyakis-san recommended?--Mada (talk) 02:52, 7 June 2013 (CDT) Many Thanks and sorry for disturbing.--Mada (talk) 02:54, 7 June 2013 (CDT)
Chapter 12 was awesome. BTW, Mahesvara(Maheshvara) is an alternate name for Lord Shiva, the Hindu God of destruction and one of the Hindu trinity consisting of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Maybe useful to add as a footnote.
Is Volume 8 supposed to have such short chapters, or were they simply summarized translations of the full chapters?

:Yes it is supposed to have such short chapters. The chapters alternate between present and past and so each chapter is shorter than in previous :volumes, but there are almost 3 times as many chapters than usual. SXIII (talk) 16:28, 3 March 2013 (CST)
quick question are you planning on translating volume 5 next or are you going to help with volume 8?

Thanks for all you're hard work. Now for a curveball, do you think tatsuya has 2 spells(besides that non-systematic thing) one that heals and one that destroys or is just different applications of the same spell. Cause the way Miyuki explains it, doesn't it seem kinda like the same thing?

No, his decompestion, just erases everything (destroying things) and his regrowth reads and reset the eidos back to the way they were (healing things). Md_rat

2. When are you going to translate the Afterwords or The Late Great Favorite?

Uh, probably some far distant time in the future. (read: never) The Afterwords and the Late Great Favorite bear no impact on the story itself. They are merely the author's thoughts as each novel comes to a close. Hence why their priority is very, very low.

5. Are you going to translate all the volumes?

Until otherwise stated, yes. Volume 5 may get delayed though, since it is a collection of side stories rather than advancing the main plot. We'll see what happens after the Nine Schools Competition.

6. I got the chapter summaries from somewhere else, may I post them in the forums?

Please don't. Last I heard, the chapter summaries flying everywhere absolutely killed all motivation for the translators. So...... Please don't. Please.

7. I want to join the project, where do I sign up?

I don't have the power to actually grant that, since I am not the project leader for MKnR, larenthian is. If you are interested in joining the project, drop by the Feedback Thread to let larenthian and Seitsuki know. Following that, inscribe your name onto the Registration page next to which chapter you would like to work on. I will not provide RAWs, so do not ask.

8. So what happened to your ETA or projected deadline?

While I do receive comments regarding the accuracy of my estimated deadlines, after spending some time reflecting and looking at the overall project, I have elected to restore the function on my User Page. Ultimately, I feel that the unfortunate actions of the minority should not reflect on the benign actions of the majority. Please excuse my temporary fit of pique.
9. I have more questions that you haven't answered here!

Hey Drey! Out of curiosity, how far ahead of Mahouka have you read without translating? Do you translate a chapter immediately after you read it? I'm curious to hear if particularly interesting chapters are more fun for you to translate. On a related note, are there any overarching themes or references in Mahouka that are lost in translation (seeing as the current translation is japanese -> chinese -> english)? d4mi3n (talk) 23:30, 20 February 2013 (CST)

:In terms of "going ahead", the Chinese translators have already translated practically everything out in print, which means they have already finished Volume 8 and are starting to work on the Double 7 Arc. I translate according to chronological order, so in terms of sheer knowledge of the material, of course I know what is coming up way ahead of time. And yes, certain chapters are more to work on because I know what is yet to come. (*cough* Volume 7 Chapter 12 *cough*) Finally, generally there are no overarching themes or references lost in translation as the text does a good job making multiple references. What is lost in translation is that some of the terminology have a "genius bonus" when it comes to recognizing the kanji. However, it's no loss if the reader cannot read the kanji.

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter X before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

Thanks a lot for the translations so far. Even though a few are asking you to reconsider not translating anymore- whatever you decide has priority should come first. -IndexArcanum

Thanks a lot for 5th chapter. And i also got a question, on the Mahouka page on facebook there's something called Double Act 7 which is set in the second year, can you tell something more about it and does it come as a novel or in a magazine. Again thank's a lot for 5th chapter. --Silver Horn (talk) 04:28, 16 January 2013 (CST)

Double 7 is in Dengeki Bunko or whatever that magazine is. So far, the first 2 segments (I guess chapters 0-6) have been released, and it is 2nd year as you say. It's an unedited portion and "spoiler free," so it's more akin to the web novels. It would take place after Web Arc 6, of course. --EnigmaticAxiom (talk) 05:15, 16 January 2013 (CST)
Awesome job Dreyakis, its getting exciting with each chapter release. however, in my personal opinion, i'm not that hyped about the story spanning over two volumes. In the previous arcs i felt the transition to the next volume didn't go over so well, hell i'm still lamenting about the enrollment arc. that being said the author did improve with the nine-schools arc. maybe the author will surprise us this time. great story anyways. share your thoughts.
I had the feeling that he took his time with this chapter. But that is kinda good, because sometimes i get the bad feeling that he works to much for us and even then he is still so fast that you can by no means complain (still one of the fastest translators I seen till now) (not that we have a right to complain anyway).

hey just 1 question please dont feel offended , just wondering, that are you going to fully translate the whole series in future as per now ?
^Please don't start harassing him. He has no obligation to translate and has been doing a phenomenal job. Most people don't even post estimates on when they'll finish but he does to help us. We all want to read the chapter and we all are probably thinking the same as you but asking, putting pressure on, or otherwise demanding anything out of him doesn't help the process (it may even act as a demotivate).
Just so you know, it wasn't 200 pages in 4 days (well, it's possible he did, but that's besides the point). The ###/### is the page he is currently on compared to the page the chapter ends. :As Enigmatic surmised, I'm starting on page 220 out of 253, where the chapter ends. Trying to do 200 pages in 4 days would be pushing it even for me. I roughly put out 15 pages/day on most days, with a modest spike in production on my days off. Dreyakis (talk) 23:08, 22 January 2013 (CST)
Indeed. It's difficult not to appreciate just how fast and capable both Drey and zzhk are. Even given a masterful command of both English and Chinese, there's a lot of cross-referencing that has to happen when you're not translating straight from the Japanese text. The fact that they're both efficient and consistent is just staggering. <br />
On a different note, Drey, judging from your language ability and the fact that you hail from the ever-glorious Cali, I'm guessing you're an ABC. I'm working from the Chinese translations of the light novels. The web novels were published before the light novels, but the light novels contain more content in terms of character development and extra scenes. Now for the biggest dilemma of the holidays, do i read Vol 6 chapter one or wait for volume 5 to finish. but then again, since Dreyakis is so amazing he may surprise us all with a Christmas gift with the completion of volume 5. Keep up the amazing work - Assasinart

At Assasinart, Volume 5 has doing to do with the story line they are just little side stories, some that take place before they enrolled at school and some after. Not reading volume 5 will not make you miss anything. Volume 6 picks up right after volume 4. Md_rat
Just because you don't care to read them doesn't mean others don't, the translator is free to translate in whatever order he/she chooses but don't make it seem that just because volume 5 is being delayed that it has no importance, if it didn't have a single piece of relevance then the author would have never wrote in the first place...

I think that just 2 chapters from volume 5 have importance: 1-Summer break (already translated) and 2-Presidential elections and the queen (elections to the new student council). i hope someone do this (not dreyakis because he already did so much and now he's doing volume 6 ) anyway, thanks so much for your work. Merry christmas! -Neobosco

I did not mean that they are not important, it is just that they are not part of the main story line. They add little but more information into their past and gives you a quick peek at what is to come in the future. I just meant that you would not miss much if you skipped them. The order of translations is all up to Dreyakis so he might decided to translate them but I think he is working on the main story line first. Sorry if I offended anyone. Md_rat

Thank you for being so consistent with your updates and your even greater efforts in translating so quickly. I really appreciate your efforts every chapter. This series really deserves an anime or a faster manga but in the interim, your great translations are very fulfilling in expressing the original feel of the work.
I think that is because the chapters are shorter now. Anyway thanks a lot for translating at all because people love you when you load them up and resent you because after each chapter you give them such a long time waiting (anything more than the next shot immediately is too long). Just joking, you are so fast that we too much expectations and we are happy that you take the time to bring us poor idiots some good translations.

Before anything else gotta say your awesome, thanks for the fast translations, really liking this series. That said i was wondering about something, you said volume 5 may get delayed since its side stories does that mean you are going to translate volume 6 first? and if so are you eventually going to translate volume 5? Because while i'm not sure or anything it seems the side stories hold progress for characters like Mayumi (cover, novel illustrations etc) so i was just curious what you eventually planned to do it, not rushing for dates or anything though just curious.

I'm working from the Chinese translations of the light novels. The web novels were published before the light novels, but the light novels contain more content in terms of character development and extra scenes. In addition, some lines in the web novels were toned down in the light novels. (And there's more fanservice in the light novels.)
I just want to let you know, Dreyakis, I highly enjoy your translation. I've spent quite a bit of time as an editor for various fan translation groups (never for light novels though) and even those projects could cause a man's brain to explode. Translation is hard work and you are doing the best job I have seen on Baka-Tsuki. It is a pleasure to read your translated text, doubly so because the novels themselves are excellent. The novels have an addictive neutrality to them, and I am very happy that you are translating them for an entirely new section of the world to enjoy. ~BakaGrappler
First time commenting on bakaupdates, so not sure if this is the correct way, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for your work! I absolutely love this series. I've reread it 5x now eagerly waiting for my next hit of ecstasy! I actually created a log in just to voice my utmost gratitude to you and all the hard workers that work on the Mahouka series! I truly hope this series becomes an anime, but at the same time I know it'll never be as glorious as the LN! You work so quickly and your translations are top notch! I want to help with translating novels on this wiki, but at the registration page of a project it just shows the chapters and the translators who translated it and I can't find anything that could help me. And if I do register to translate a chapter where can I find or get a raw version of the chapter to translate or do they provide you with one. Currently now I am in my third year of Japanese at a highschool standard and I am wondering if this enough to actually start translating chapters. I can understand Japanese sentence structure/grammar, hiragana, katakana like only 20 kanjis. Thank you in advance for answering. :) - TheWierdSaying
Larenthian is the project leader for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, so I don't have the final say on who does what. (Larenthian is on vacation until next year, but may poke in from time to time.) If you are interested in joining the project, go ahead and check in on the Feedback thread that is linked on the main Mahouka page. The Registration link is only to let the translators know who is doing what. Unfortunately, you will have to hunt down a copy of the RAWs yourself, as we don't have a handy supply cache anywhere (not that I know of). Dreyakis, out of curiosity, how do you manage to crank through these translations so quickly? I'm curious how you get so much done so quickly; never mind the quality which I have absolutely no complaints about. I've also been very impressed with how well you estimate time until completion, which is a skill that's impressive in and of itself. ~ d4
Generally speaking, my productivity is around 10 pages per day since I'm translating Chinese to English, with appropriate increases in output on my days off (Wednesdays and Saturdays). I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say thank you, and we look forward to future releases! -Vudoodude

My favorite thing about your translations is your keeping us informed of where you are and when we can expect the next chapter. It gives purpose to my checking three times a day to see if a new chapter is out. Love your work - Dracohall
Hello I am new to Baka-Tsuki and I have a couple questions that you can help me with. (Sorry if this is in the wrong place to put it, but I am new and I don't know anywhere else to put it.)
-
I want to help with translating novels on this wiki, but at the registration page of a project it just shows the chapters and the translators who translated it and I can't find anything that could help me.
Unfortunately, you will have to hunt down a copy of the RAWs yourself, as we don't have a handy supply cache anywhere (not that I know of). if you have to find your own raws that just makes you more awsome thank you very much for translating.

You are going to finish it tomorrow? That is awesome, I can not wait, this is the chapter that I have looked forward to the most, I can not wait to see him fight. Thanks, Md_rat

-
Dreyakis, out of curiosity, how do you manage to crank through these translations so quickly? I'm curious how you get so much done so quickly; never mind the quality which I have absolutely no complaints about. I've also been very impressed with how well you estimate time until completion, which is a skill that's impressive in and of itself. ~ d4

- From where are you? i would like to know mainly because of the time difference. ~Forbdn.Domin8r

Generally speaking, my productivity is around 10 pages per day since I'm translating Chinese to English, with appropriate increases in output on my days off (Wednesdays and Saturdays). It's not hard to make an estimate after that. I'm out in California, so the time stamp on B-T is two hours ahead of local time. Hey Dreyakis, thanks for all the translations on this great series...i love it and enjoying it the most...i have seen a few translators asking you about raws and links...if so you can lead them to this site ---> it contains all Japanese volumes released so far...thanks keep up the good work

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter 8 before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

3. Hey, dude, the chapters are out of order! Why did you translate Chapter 9 before Chapter 8?

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter 8 before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

Please.

7. I have more questions that you haven't answered here!

Drop me a line in the comments section below. If I can't answer it, go ahead and take it to the Feedback Threat on the forums.
Hello, Kanziel here. I am a new member and new to all this, but I hope to help in translating this great work. I am bilingual in Chinese and English. I hope you can teach me the basic and let me help you with translating Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei. Welcome, pull up a chair, here be dragons. Check in at the Feedback Thread on the MKnR main page and let Larenthian and Seitsuki know that you're in. I just started a few months ago, so I don't have much in terms of seniority. Make sure to register for the chapters you plan to work on as well. Do you know who is doing chapter 8 if you are not? I do not see any other active translators listed, maybe they are not listed yet? Md_rat

just want to make sure. The chinese source translate the webnovel or the published light novel? Xenocross 09:40, 5 July 2012 (CDT)

Source comes from the published light novels. I haven't found the translations from the web novels yet. Dreyakis 10:56, 5 July 2012 (CDT)
Hi... First of all, thank you for translating "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei"... but before doing chapter 8, can you please finish the translation of chapter 2 ? Please, Thank you --lSwRl (talk) 10:09, 11 August 2012 (CDT)

Thank you for your translations keep up the good work :D

By the way guys, I may get around to Volume 1 Chapter 2, but that is most definitely AFTER I finish Volume 2. So sit tight and hang onto you hats. Dreyakis (talk) 03:12, 17 August 2012 (CDT)

Just wanna ask when you estimate to finish chapter 9 or volume 2 in general?

Things get done when they get done, I'm afraid. Chapter 9 is a fairly short chapter, so I may get it out sometime this weekend, but there's no guarantee. God alone knows when I'll finish all of volume 2. Dreyakis (talk) 22:55, 22 August 2012 (CDT)

All good. Any amount of effort is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the hard work.

Not sure if this is how you do this but here goes. I just wanna ask where would I be able to obtain the chinese light novel in NA? I have googled many sources and their shipping service does not include NA. Thanks in advance and I really appreciate you translating this. =] Yoh-kun.
