Chapter 16
Author: Jun Maeda
The Memories of a Town
-----
The light of the summer sun seemed familiar, but the warmth of it was somehow different. I had been walking for nearly an hour since I got off the bus. I had the parasol I borrowed from Mama out under this cloudless sky.

"Ou seul allez-vous la fille? (Where're you headed to by yourself, miss?)"
A old man on a large tractor started talking to me.
To his side was an old women, holding onto a parasol just as I was. I was a little flustered, but I was able to speak the words I had memorized.
"Il va au gisement de lavande. (I'm headed for the lavender fields)"
The old man laughed and offered to give me a ride on the tractor.

In front of my eyes was a carpet of purple stretching all the way to the horizon.
At the foot of the mountain behind me was a village of white houses, like the kind you would expect to have seen hundreds of years ago.
It was a sight that you could only see here.
But the kindness of the people, and how they lived each day to the fullest, could be found in any town.

It all started as a conversation between Nagisa and Ushio.
"Shio, it's almost summer vacation."
"Yeah."
They were in the kitchen talking. Ushio seemed to like cooking, so she was happily helping her mother.
"Would you like to go anywhere?"

"Well... I do..."
"Then try asking Papa."
I don't remember when she started calling me Papa.
"But will he let me?"
"I'm sure he won't mind, right?"
She came in from the kitchen holding a plate to ask me that.
"Probably not. Where would you like to go, Ushio?"
"You see, Papa..."
Ushio sat down in front of me with her back straight and a serious look in her eyes. It must be a pretty serious request, but her eyes were filled with determination.
"What, you want to go overseas?"
I spoke first.
Bull's-eye; Ushio nodded to my question.
"That's amazing, Tomoya. You sure know our Shio well."
Nagisa turned around in the kitchen and said that with a smile.
"She's our daughter, so of course I would. And we have the resources to do so, as well. Where would you like to go?"
I continued asking Ushio questions.
"Do you want to go swimming in Hawaii? See the koalas in Australia? Or perhaps the Arch of Triumph in Paris?
Ushio nodded again... three times.
"Greedy, aren't you? Pick one."
"But, I want to go to all of them."
"Seriously?"
"I want to go to all of them... Hawaii, Australia, Paris. I want to travel across the world."
"Across the world!?"
I nearly dropped my cup.
"Yeah, I want to travel across the world by myself and see all the different villages."
She stared at me with her large eyes, and her hands were clutched in determination.
"But, you're still in grade school..."
"Age has nothing to do with this. I want to go."
She said this with force in her voice. She must have gotten this stubornness from her mother.
Neither of us spoke, and the room fell into silence.
Even so, if neither of us speaks, I can't understand her reasons.
"... Why across the world? What made you want to do that?"
"I've always wanted to visit all the different towns and meet the people that live there."
"But you've already been to a lot of different towns, and seen a lot of places."
"Yeah, but I want to go all over the world. I saw some towns on TV. There was one on a small town in Europe. Everyone living there looked so happy."
Ushio's eyes were tinged with excitement.

-----
"When I learned about the world outside of our town in class, I was so excited. I wanted to know more, so I read some books at the library. And after that, I wanted to go out and see these villages and meet and talk to these people myself."
Ushio looked lost in thought, as though she was remembering the scenes from the TV or the lines from the books she read.
Now that I think about it, Ushio was always bothering me to teach her difficult words that even I didn't know. It must have been for the books she was reading about the towns and their cultures.
I didn't like the idea, but at the same time, I was surprised.
I had thought that Ushio was still a child who didn't know about the world, but she had gone this far to further her own knowledge.
But...
"Still, this is a bit too sudden..."
Way too sudden, in my opinion.
"I'm used to travelling alone."
"Going overseas is a lot different."
"Even so, I have faith in my ability to adapt."
I believe we brought up Ushio well.
As though to be able to do the things Nagisa was never able to do, we raised her to be a strong girl.
She was always the leading part in the culture festivals, and would be the one to act out the fights and scuffles.
I remembered what the old man, Nagisa's dad, once said.
Our dream is the same as our daughter's.
I wonder if this is how it is for Nagisa now.
If Ushio can fulfil her own wish, will she be happy from that?
It seemed so Nagisa-like; so modest, yet brave.
"I can go, right, Papa?"
That small, full-of-energy version of Nagisa was clinging to my legs.
"What do you think, Nagisa?"
I turned towards the kitchen and asked her that.
"I want to let her do whatever makes her happy."
It was a foolish question.

The train shook as it climbed the mountain trail.
This place was famous, so a lot of people seemed to be visiting now.
The people there were still as friendly as ever, and I had many people talk to me.
I couldn't understand much of what they said. And before I knew it, I had a can of coconut juice in my hands.
I took a sip. It was sweet, but very tasty.
"E tasty muito! (It's very good!)"
I don't know if I said that correctly, but everyone looked liked they were pleased.

We arrived after about 30 minutes. There were clouds below us.
I could see the ocean in the distance, and the skyscraper that had seemed so large earlier now looked so very small.
Behind me was a tall stone statue with its arms spead out. It looked as if it was encouraging me.

When we visited the Furukawa household during the weekend, I took the chance to ask Nagisa's parents about Ushio's trip.
"As expected of my grandchild. The scale is on a different level altogether."
He didn't seem to be trying to stop her at all.
"Don't be so irresponsible!"
We were in the living room. Ushio was sitting on Akio's lap while he was brushing her hair.
The fact that every time we come here they happen to take these particular positions was quite vexing.
"Come on, Akki, keep at it!"
"A grade schooler that's travelled all across the world? That's a great thing right there. I don't have the kind of courage to do that. That's amazing, Ushio. You'll make it big-time when you grow up! Compared to that, you dad is just a measly worm!"
Now that's just mean.
"You don't want this poor excuse of a father as your dad. So, you can be our child, okay? Alright, from today on, you're Ushio Furukawa!"
"That's right, if you don't let me go, I'll be Akki's daughter instead."
"Dammit. Double-teaming me..."
"Please forgive him, Tomoya."
To the side was Sanae, apologizing for the old man's evil tricks.
"And there's a good side to it for you guys, as well. You two haven't been alone together in quite a while, have you?"
"Huh? What do you mean...?"
Next to me, Nagisa had her head down in embarassment.
"... You don't need to know."
I didn't really get what they were talking about.
"What, has your husband already gone dry?"
"Ah, well, no..."
This is where I should have stopped her. I would regret letting her continue.
"We make time for that kind of stuff... you know... perverted things..."

Nagisa's bombshell announcement part... er, what part were we on, anyway? I don't remember...
It was then that I noticed. I was being sucked into the Furukawa household's pace (it used to be the triangle of fools, but it's been upgraded to a square of fools now).
"I'm just worried about her."
I quickly diverted the conversation back to the problem at hand.
"I've heard that a lot of Japanese people get their stuff stolen while on trips. It's too dangerous, I say."
"You bastard, don't look down on my granddaughter... We've trained her well."
Well, she was brought up by the old man from a young age. Since then, she's always been more fit than other kids of her age. She's never lost a track match in the sports competitions. She's been placed as the anchor for a 5 man team and managed to come from behind and win it for them. The memory was still fresh in our minds.
I fully understood how strong she was.
But, on the other hand, curled up on the old man's lap like that, she was just as cute as any of the other girls her age...
I have no idea where I was going with this.
I had no other option than to ask for more time to think about it.

"So, did you come up with an answer, Tomoya?"
On the dining table was some shredded squid and tsukudani. In his hand was some sake.
It was just about to become midnight.

-----
Nagisa, Ushio, and Sanae were sleeping together in the other room.
When we were up for it, me and the old man would sit together and have a drink like this.
"For what?"
"About Ushio's trip. Don't tell me you already forgot."
"Don't worry, I've been thinking about it. Isn't that why you wanted to talk to me?"
"Well, props for not forgetting about it."
"Of course. It's an important matter."
I took a sip from my cup. The gradually spreading warmth felt good.
"I understand that you're worried. I've been a parent as well."
The old man poured some more sake into my cup.
"But... I get the feeling she's doing this because of something else."
"Such as what?"
"I wouldn't be asking you if I knew..."
For a while, the old man quit talking and started eating some of the squid.
"It's like... she's... inherited Nagisa's fate, maybe..."
He said it quietly, as if just remembering it himself.
"Nagisa's... fate?"
"We've talked about this before, dumbass. When she was young, she almost lost her life... When she woke up in that field with nothing in it..."
"Yeah..."
"And them, the same kind of thing happened to Ushio. As though she had been spirited away, she dissapeared... to the same place... though there was a hospital there now... There she slept."
That time was all a blur to me; I can't really remember what happened. But, I know that I had thought I had lost Ushio for good.
"......."
My mouth became parched. Perhaps it was because of the alcohol.
"I get the feeling her trip now might have something to do with that."
No, that can't be.

-----
"Hey, old man... We've grown up in this town, and we love it... Even Nagisa has said so."
"Yeah, that's true."
"Then, why does she have to go and forsake this town?"
"Forsake?"
"Am I wrong?"
"Yeah. If you're trying to say that Ushio should have a close connection with this town, then this trip...."
The old man stopped there for a moment, and downed his cup in one gulp. After taking a breather, he continued on.
"won't affect her love for this town. You could say this is a journey into adulthood."

The rays of the just-risen sun still felt pleasant.
I tied her shoelaces and adjusted her hat.
On her back was a fairly large backpack.
Tied to the keyholder were 4 good-luck charms.
"It is unfortunate that Tomoya can't come along with us to see you off."
"I can't help it. I have work."
I still have work today, so I can't go and see her off at the airport.
So Nagisa, Sanae, and the old man would see her off without me.
"If you're all done, then let's get going."
Standing next to the doorway smoking a cigerette, the old man tried hurrying us up.
"No, first I have to warn her about a few things. Make sure to look out for cars. Don't go with strange people. Also..."
"You're being paranoid."
The old man stopped me.
"Man, you sure worry a lot."
I know I worry too much, and yet, I can't stop myself.
"She'll be alright. She's your kid, after all."
"... Is that so... Well, I suppose..."
I picked up Ushio and her luggage, and headed out to the entrance hall.
"You've sure grown."
"Yeah, I'm 4 centimeters taller than I was last year."
She told me that with a smile on her face.

And suddenly, I saw something wavering in the air.
It was like snow... no, it was a light.
It was dancing in the air.
As though to give its blessing to the journey of this child.
And at the same time, I remembered the old man's words.

... this trip won't affect her love for this town. You could say this is a journey into adulthood.

Ah, so that's what he meant
I was finally able to grasp that concept.
The act of maturing is to meet many other people, and to part with them, as well.
It's the same with towns.
She'll be visiting many different towns, and will part with each one of them.
That's how both she and the towns will mature during this journey.
I could understand the light's feelings as well.
It was looking forward to meeting all of these different people and towns as well.
"What's the matter?"
Nagisa asked me that, probably because she thought I was acting strange.
"The light..."
I said that and started to point towards it, but it had already disappeared.
"No, it's nothing."
"It's about time to go."
Slapping me on the back, the old man left first.
"Yeah."
I tried to let Ushio down, but she grabbed and held onto my neck instead.

"Sorry, Papa."
She whispered that into my ear.
"No, it's fine."
"I love you, Papa."
"I love you too, Ushio."
Ushio gave me a peck on the cheek.
Finally letting go of me, she got down and stood up.
"See you later, Papa."
She said that looking over her shoulder.
"Be careful out there."
"Yeah. I'll be off then!"
Ushio headed off.
Filled with the expectations, and the memories, of a town.
Description
A set of fourteen illustrated short stories which added to Clannad's story were serialized in the issues of the Japanese bisho-jo magazine Dengeki G's Magazine published by MediaWorks, between July 30, 2004 and August 30, 2005. Thirteen regular chapters, plus one extra chapter were serialized and the title of the collection was Official Another Story Clannad: On the Hill that Light Watches Over (Official Another Story Clannad 光見守る坂道で).

The installments were written by Key's scenario staff and each story was accompanied by illustrations by Japanese artist GotoP. Two more stories were included when they were collected into a bound volume for sale on November 25, 2005, containing 103 pages. The short story collection was later re-released via SoftBank 3G and FOMA mobile phones produced by Prototype through Visual Art's Motto in January 2008.

It was like a cloud... no, it was a light.

"Yeah."
Seeing that she was about to fall, Ushio grabbing and held onto my neck.

Me From Before
-----
In the middle of their date
"Talk to me."
We were having lunch at a cafe.
Drinking our coffee, he started off by asking me that.
By "he," I mean Tomoya Okazaki, another student... Or perhaps I should say upperclassman?
Oh, whatever. He's the guy I'm going out with.
"About what?"
"How about your past?"
"What kind of request is that?"
Tomoya sighed in disapproval.
"A normal one, of course. I want to know everything about you. I want to like everything about you. I want to know how you lived, how you were back before we met, everything. Even your plans for the future. We'll be together from now on, so tell me."
He was the type of guy to throw around such embarassing statements without hesitation.
Making sure none of the workers were around, I sneaked a kiss in.
"I suppose I'll tell you, then. But, promise me you'll believe what I'm going to tell you."
"Of course I will."
"Alright, then let's begin. Back then, I would do nothing but get in fights all day."
I pointed to the pyramid of cubed suger at the side of our table.
"It was just like those sugar cubes."

"What was?"
"The pile of bodies of the delinquents."
"........"
"You don't believe me, do you?"
"No, no. You're mistaken."
"Really now?"
"Really."
He had a serious look on his face. I grabbed and held his hand.
"I guess it can't be helped...... This is a story of the one time I had resigned myself to defeat."

The Past
THUMP!
With a dull thud, another body was added to the pile.
People who couldn't think of others.
People who cound think of none but themselves.
People who lived with only thoughts of themselves.

-----
It was they who were in that pile.
"Annoying bastards..."
I turned around... and she stood before me.
Beneath the waning moon, a young girl in unfamilar clothing stood waiting.
She stared at me with the same piercing light as the moon.
"Are you the rumored 'hunter' that is said to appear on the moonlit nights?"
"Avenging someone? Stop now. I've seen many like yourself. I've beaten them all at their own game."
I scared her off. Or, at least, I tried to.
But, the glint in her eyes did not change.
"This is not revenge for someone. I just cannot forgive evil beings. Especially ones like yourself, those who flaunt their overwhelming power."
"I do try to only fight certain types of people."
"I do not care. You will part with your power here."
She dashed towards me. The distance between us closed. She was here in but a moment.
But it was easy to dodge such a straight-forward attack. I twisted my body.
A sound of slicing, and then she was past me.
I still remember the burning sensation in my shoulder. It spread in an instant.
I was bleeding.
The sword she held in her hand dully reflected the moonlight.

"I apologize for my unfair methods. But you have no chance to win like this."
My arm wouldn't move. I couldn't stop it from bleeding. It may have been just as she said.
"Evil will always yield to justice. Those who follow the path of righteousness are stronger."

-----
"This is their divine gift. Remember that."
Not more than a moment after she finished speaking, a white flash came from above and to the right of me.
I rolled away. In my place was the light of the moon.
"...... You could still dodge?"
"If I see it, I can dodge it."
"I see. Then...."
Muttering to herself, she closed the gap between us in a single bound.
I moved to dodge the sword in her right hand.
From the bottom right..... It was fast!
In an instant, I threw myself away from the blade, rolling on the ground to evade the attack.
One after the other, the attacks kept coming.
Slipping past one of her swings, I let loose a spinning back kick.
But, she wasn't there. She had disappeared from before my very eyes... or so it seemed.
A chill ran through my back, and, for a moment, my vision went dark...
At the same time I noticed the moonlight being blocked, I twisted and instead kicked to my side.
THUD!
A hit.
With that much force behind it, I was able to clear a fair distance between us.
It would seem I scored a direct hit to her chest.
She held her sword held oddly, and the hem of her skirt was torn just a bit.
"To be able to change your stance mid-air like that, it seems just like one of those joke martial arts...."
"It's not impossible to do."
But I had not the confidence I could do it again.
I wouldn't be able to do anything at this rate.
I would be down in a single blow, and I had not a clue how to attack her.
If I was just able to return even a single blow to her...
I had no time to think, the next attack was coming.
I could just barely see the blade. If I could use my arm, I could possible knock the sword to one side and counter attack. But my right arm had been cut and wouldn't move.
Leaning back to avoid the next blow, I took a large step back.
I felt something on my ankle. One of the delinquents who should have been knocked out was grabbing it and I lost my balance.
"How unfortunate. Prepare to die."
Without a second's hesitation, she brandished her sword.
.... I wouldn't be able to dodge it. At that moment,
"Use thiiiiss!"
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see something flying towards me at a high speed.
Even I thought I was clutching at straws, but still I reached out for...

"Wow.... Just like in manga."
Tomoya let out a sigh of admiration.
"What was it that came flying? A sword?"
"As if it would be so convenient. It was a steel pipe."
"Good enough of a weapon for me. I see. So, you took that and fought back."
"No, not quite. This part was almost like it came straight out of a manga."

-----
I reached out, but I couldn't get to it. Instead....
A dull "thwack!" resounded as the steel pipe crashed into the side of her head.
"Oops, my bad..."
She crumpled to the ground on her knees and didn't move for a while. While I had the chance, I shook off the delinquents hand from my ankle.
"She might be mad at me for that."
It seemed out of character for him to act dumb.
Looking over, I saw a sloppily dressed man slapping the cheeks of the delinquents and calling out to them, trying to wake them up.
"Hey, Ebisu--! If you're awake, answer! If you're dead, answer as well!"
"Who are you?"
Still a bit shocked, I asked him that.
"The leader of these guys. But damn, what losers. Getting beat up by a single woman."
He talked to me without turning around. He seemed rather composed.
"Ahahahaha! You got a footprint on your face. Damn, I shoulda brought a camera. Would've been priceless."
He seemed quite different from the rest of them.
The group of delinquents started waking up. When they saw the guy, they looked ashamed and just sort of shrugged their shoulders with a bitter smile on their faces.
"Come on, you guys. Get out of here and stop messing with their fight."
The guy looked happy, sitting there in the middle of the embankment, with his can of coffee in his hand.
"This isn't a show, you know."
"Don't say that. Seeing two girls going at each other with all their might? This isn't something to miss!"
Saying that, he let out a loud laugh. Strangely enough, I didn't really mind.
"And who do you think was the one to interfere!?"
She finally stood up and let out that outburst. I could understand her feelings.
"Yeah yeah. I got it. I've finished my business here, so I'll be leaving."
"What business?"
"Came to stop these guys. I heard they were all going to gang up on you, and I don't like that kind of method. Didn't except every single one of them to get the shit beaten out of 'em, though."
He laughed. Looking around, all of them had their heads hanging.
"If you're displeased, I'm always up for another round."
"Oh, what a pleasure. It's their fault for being weak."
"What, weak!?"
"We're not weak, Kazu!"
A torrent of complaints arose.
"What? You all lost to a single girl. That's what people call 'weak.'"
With that statement, all the complaints just stopped.
"And that's how it is. Also, sorry about that."
"About what? There's nothing for you to apologize about."
"Thought I had bothered your fight. Well, if ever you feel like it, try talking to these guys. They're really not that bad of a bunch."

~

"And the man left."
"Who was that guy...?"
"Who knows? I still don't know who he was even now."
I would have liked to have met him again, but I have yet to cross paths with him ever since.
".... So, was the fight over?"
Putting down his glass, he turned towards me and asked that.
"No, she just had a light concussion. She recovered in that period of time and we started once again."

~

I had lost count of the times I had dodged her attacks, and the times I had thought I was done for.
I gasped for breath. The tension was leaving my mouth and throat parched.
... You're going to lose.
A part of myself whispered that to me, over and over.
Even so, I was still calm for some reason. But, little by little, I was resigning myself to my fate.
I wonder if this is what it's like to lose. Slowly, but surely, having your hopes whittled away.
And suddenly, I lost consciousness. Or what felt like it.
I could feel nothing but the slight pain and heat from my right arm.
I stopped and turned around.

-----
She was basked in moonlight, as though it were natural for her to be there.
Brandishing her sword, she walked towards me with a light gait.

The wind started blowing.
The yells matched the howl of the wind perfectly.

With my last bit of energy, I turned and dodged.
The sound of metal rang clearly.

A cherry blossom fluttered onto her shoulder.
There was a cherry tree.
From where I dodged, the trunk of a cherry tree stood. Her sword was lodged deeply into it.
Using my knee, I broke off the handle of the sword.
"I have... lost to evil? But... I am one of justice..."
Dropping the handle, she said that with a dumbfounded look on her face.
"Is there a strength that transcends both good and evil...?"
"Don't know.... But I was stronger. Isn't that all it is?"
"There's no way that should be.... I even got a surprise attack off... and after that, I was the only one attacking... I should have been the stronger one..."
"Well, I guess this means I'm not evil."
I said that with a grin on my face.
"Leaving that aside, there's no way you can't be evil!"
An immediate comeback. She seemed like a really interesting person.
"Would you tell me one thing, before you go...?"
She asked me that as I was about to leave.

-----
"What is it... that you seek? Authority? Even more power than you have now? Or perhaps only to satiate your thist for violence?"
"I do not know."
Still facing away from her, I answered.
"All I know... is that it somewhere, sometime that is not now."
"So... you seek the future."
She summarized it so.
It was only then that I noticed.
What I sought for... was the future.
A place different from now.

At school
"You beat a girl weilding a sword with your bare hands? ... Are you serious..."
"You don't believe me, do you?"
"No, no. You're mistaken."
"Really now?"
"Really."
He gave me a serious look, and held my hand tighter.
"I guess I'll let that go..."
Outside the shop, there were a number of people waiting. Looking around, the shop was full.
Noticing this, Tomoya picked up the check.
"I guess we ought to leave now."
"Yeah."
We picked up our bags and stood up.
I left the check to Tomoya. A girl's supposed to have her boyfriend treat her.
I felt a little bad about leaving him with the check, but I make him lunch and stuff on our days off. I guess we're even then.

We returned to school.
As we were passing the gates, Tomoya got an uncomfortable look on his face.
"What's wrong?"
"We're going arm-in-arm into the school?"
"Why not? The whole school already knows about it."
"Whatever... When did I become such a boy-in-love type of character...?"
We walked arm-in-arm.
There was a group of students gathered in front of the gym.
"Oi, what's happening?"
Tomoya stopped and asked the nearest student.
"The winner of last year's inter-high kendo matches came to challenge our kendo club. You know how weak they are."
"What, that's boring... Let's go, Tomoyo."
Tomoya turned away and started walking towards the school.

-----
I was pulled along by Tomoya.
I was a bit happy; this was girlish.
The only one I'd allow to do this is you, Tomoya.
I left that unsaid.
But I couldn't control myself and smiled.
I probably look like an idiot in love right now.

We passed by a girl wearing another school's outfit.
"Heh."
She laughed.
"So that's the future you were looking for."
I was pulled along by Tomoya, not stopping.
I wonder if I knew her.
Well, it doesn't matter. Let's go.
The time I pass with Tomoya is more precious, and brings me more happiness, than anything else.

The Secret of the Charms
-----
Unfavorable thoughts...
We went to the reference room during our lunch break.
"We'll be doing charms again today, right?"
This is Yukine Miyazawa. As usual, we had our coffee and she her book of charms.
"No."
Sunohara put up his hand to stop her.
"We're always the ones who have to do the charms."
"Well, you seemed like you were having fun with them."
"Let's have you try out some charms today, Yukine. I'm borrowing your book."
Leaning over, he swiftly grabbed the book from her. Perhaps it was because he always got the short end of the stick, or perhaps from curiosity.
Either way, this doesn't have anything to do with me, so I'll just sit back and relax.
"Let's have you try the one we did before. Now, where was it..."
"Oh? Which one?"
"Here, this one. The one to tell you who likes you."
My body stiffened up.
"After reciting the chant I'll tell you, talk a walk through the school hallways once. The person who talks to you is someone who's been thinking about you."
"That's too embarassing!"
Miyazawa stood there, looking troubled, embarassed, and happy all at the same time.

-----
Ah... So cute. But I have to stop this.
"Oi, she doesn't want to. Just stop."
"Oh? What, you're embarassed too, Okazaki? You think you'll be the first person she meets out there?"
"I won't be leaving this room, no matter the consequences..."
Bull's-eye. But, I won't give in.
"Oh ho, trying to act all cool, are you?"
"And it'd just be saddening if no one talked to her."
Miyazawa smiled sadly.
"That's exactly what happened to me, you know..."
"Ahaha... I'm terribly sorry about that..."
Miyazawa's always clueless about stuff like this.
"There's no problems. If anything, Yukine always has me."
"Really? I feel relieved now."
In the end, I couldn't stop them.
"To start, please form a heart with your thumbs and index fingers, and place it against your chest."
Sunohara explained the charm while Yukine followed his directions; it was the exact opposite of what usually happened.

Ah, she looks so cute like that, making a heart with her hands.
"Unfavorable Heavy Thoughts Begone, Unfavorable Heavy Thoughts Begone, Unfavorable Heavy Thoughts Begone..."
Holding that pose, she recited the chant that Sunohara told her.
By the way, this book of charms that Yukine has has the remarkable effect of always working.
"Then, I'll be off."
By the time noticed, she was already leaving the room.
"Now then, how many people'll show up?"
"So, you just want to see how many rivals you have, eh?"
"Pretty much. If I'm the only one, I'll just confess to her on the spot. Heheh."
He got a stupid grin on his face.
"Well, let's get going."
"Hm? Where?"
"To go meet up with Yukine, of course. If we don't hurry, she'll return before we get our chance."
"You only want to do that because you already know what the charm is. That won't prove anything."
"I know I like her, and that's enough for me. If we don't get a move on, there's no way we'll meet her before she gets back."
"No, it's a charm. If it's going to happen, the charm'll make enough coincidences to make it happen."
"Like what?"
"Like I would know..."
Just then, the intercom came on with the sound of static.
"Tomoyo Okazaki and Youhei Sunohara of class 3-D, please report to the staff room immediately."
... and left us that message.
"Are you serious!?"
We looked at each other.
"That book of charms means serious business..."
"Come on, let's go. Now we have an excuse."
"Nah, I'm staying here."
"What!? Are you seriously trying to go against the power of that charm...?"
"If we go to meet Yukine now, we'll just be getting in her way."
"AH!"
Suddenly, Sunohara gave a girly shout and squeezed his thighs together.
"What's wrong?"
"Well, er... I have to take a piss."
"Are you serious...?"
Is this the work of the charm as well?

-----
"Urgh..."
As for me, I started feeling nauseous and my stomach started hurting...
Is this also due to the charm...? What dreadful power...
"Ahh! A bug got in my eye! And the other one, too! GAAAH!"
Tears started streaming from Sunohara's eyes.
"And I still have to take a piss! DAMMIT!"
Sunohara yelled that, still trying to hold it in.
He looked so pitiful, as if he was asking me to forgive me.
As for me, I suddenly had a headache, and could barely stand.
"Ah, there you are! You're coming with me to the staff room!"
And to make matters worse, a teacher had found us.
What the hell... is with this charm?

"GAAH...."
"AAAH...."
We were being taken to the staff room with Sunohara still crying and I still feeling terrible. And we just happened to cross paths with Miyazawa.
"I never thought it would have been you two."
"Well, no, we were just calling out for help..."
"But, this is the proof of my love!"
"At least stop crying if you're going to say that."
"You have to listen to what the teachers say. If you do that, I'll help you out if you need it."
Afterwards, we were scolded by the teachers until classes started, meaning we were late to class again.

Speed like Keanu...
We were back at the reference room after school.
Miyazawa was sitting at the table and trying her best to stand two 10 yen coins on top of each other on their sides.

She looked rather cute doing that.
But... this is another one of those charms.
This was one to have yourself locked up in the gym storage room with the person you were thinking of.
Using the results of the previous charm as a sign (though he'd probably have done it anyway), Sunohara asked Miyazawa to do this charm. He was probably certain she would choose him.
Ah, what a lovable sight she was, concentrating so hard on her task.
"Ah.... I did it!"

-----
Miyazawa clenched her fists together and gave herself a cheer.
Before here were two 10 yen coins, precariously stacked upon each other.
"Okay, now recite the spell."
"Speed like Keanu Reeves... Speed like Keanu Reeves... Speed like Keanu Reeves......"
After she finished mummuring the spell, the coins fell down with a thud.
"It's done, right?"
"Yeah. Now, let's get going, Yukine."
"Oi oi, don't just assume she chose you."
I pulled back Sunohara by the collar of his shirt.
"What, but she was thinking of me, weren't you, Yukine?"
"That's a secret."
Yukine calmly took Sunohara's question and returned a vague answer.
I wonder how many friends Yunike actually has other than us? It's extremely unlikely we're her only friends. Even so, it's kind of disappointing that it wasn't one of us.
Especially since she knows that we like her because of the charm earlier today.
And for her to choose another man, where does that leave us?
"Would it be okay if I just stood in front of the storage room?"
"That's what I did."
"Then, I'll do that."
Miyazawa left the room. Sunohara and I were the only ones there.
"So, any ideas who it is?"
Sunohara shook his head.
"Then, how about I poke your eyes?"
"Why!?"
"I just have the sudden urge to do it. Wait, isn't this the power of the charm? You'd go 'GYAAH!' and then where do you think you'd run off to?"
"The gym storage room? I see!Wait, that would never happen!!"
"Saw through it, huh."
Timed passed, and yet nothing happened.
"So it really wasn't me..."
Sunohara couldn't hide the shock from his face.
"Looks like it. Wasn't me, either."
"Now we just look like idiots with what happened this afternoon. Does this mean we've been rejected?"
"Don't say that out loud. I know well enough already."
"Dammit.... I don't care if I lost, let's at least see who it is! What kind of guy could have won over Yukine's heart? Don't you want to know!?"
"You really are such a sore loser..."

We left and headed towards the field.
The door was shut. No matter hard Sunohara tried pushing or pulling, it was futile.
"Yukine's somewhere in here, doing unladylike things with a good-looking guy!? DAMMIT!"
"We haven't even seen him yet; don't call him good-looking."
"Then let's have a look at him."
He started walking along the wall.
"How?"
"From the back. If we climb the fence, we can see through the window."
"Oh really?"
I never knew. I followed behind him.

And just as he said, there was a small window high up on the wall.
Taking off his socks and shoes, Sunohara climbed up the fence. We he got to the height of the window, he spread out his feet so that one was on the fence, and one was on the wall of the storage room.
Taking what appeared to be a Swiss Army knife out of his back pocket, he stuck a blade into the crevice of the window.
The window creaked. Seems liked he was able to open it.
Putting the knife back, he reached out for the window.
"Heheh..."
One could only think of him as a Peeping Tom like this.
Sunohara inched his face closer to the window that he had cracked open.
"Oh, there's Yukine. I can hear her talking..."
"To who?"
"Hmm.....? Where is he?"
And a good Peeping Tom, at that. He was peering every which way into the room.
"There's no one there... She's by herself."
"No way. This is one of her charms. He probably just hasn't showed up yet."
"But, she's talking to someone."
"Who?"
"Dunno."
There's no one there, and yet she's talking? Is she just speaking to herself?
"Maybe..."
Sunohara was talking in a low voice, as if sharing a secret.
"Maybe she's practicing her confession for when I show up?"

-----
"You sure are optimistic."
I envied his ability to see the positive side of things, despite having no ground to base it on.
"Even though I'm right here... Such a silly girl, that Yukine. Alright, I'm going."
"Where?"
"Inside."
"How?"
"Through this window."
"Isn't that dangerous?"
"No, not at all. Now then, just wait for my gallant appearance, Yukine!"
He'd probably look more like a demon or evil spirit crawling through that window.
"What do you two think you're doing!?"
"Uwaah."
Sunohara was surprised by the angry yells of a girl.
I don't know if she was on clean-up duty or something, but Kyou had a trash can with her, and she was giving us a mean glare.
"You're peeping on someone!?"
I pulled back; I had nothing to do with this.
"Uh, wait a sec. You're going to throw that dictionary at me, right? I'm kind of in a bad spot right now. Could we pass on this, please?"
"I see. Fine, I'll give you some cushioning."

Kyou placed the trash can right under Sunohara. It must have been from the kitchen, as I could smell the stench of raw fish even from here.
She took a position opposite of me from Sunohara and turned towards us.
"Now then, how many will it take?"
In her hand was a dictionary, probably the one she always had with her. She began her wind-up.
"Eh, wait just a second! I mean, if you hit me, I'll fall right into that trash can!"

-----
"All I can say is do your best to not fall, then. Ready and..."
Fwoosh..... CRASH!
I turned away from the scene of that inhumane game and went back to the front of the storage room.
She was alone, and yet she was talking to someone. I wanted to find out what was going on.
Even though I knew it was useless, I still grabbed the doorknob.
It opened.
Well, that was anti-climatic.
The light of the sun slanted into the room.
And before me, Miyazawa was crouched on the floor by herself.
There was no one here for her to have been talking to.
"Did I interrupt you?"
"No, I'm already finished."
She stood up and slowly turned around.
The faint traces of tears were left on her cheecks.
And with that, I knew what had happened.
I knew who... she had wished for a rendezvous with.
Could such a mysterious thing have happened, though?
Then again, there have been many mysterious things that have happened to me up till now...
It was only then that I noticed.
"He" must have always been like that.
Even after becoming a delinquent and losing the place he called home, he still visited her like this.
I gently hugged her.
From afar, I could hear painful screams.
"What was that?"
"Nothing you need worry about."
Stroking her hair, I was able to calm her down.
That scream was probably Sunohara's. He must have been shot down already.
If perhaps I'm here due to "his" power as well...
Then maybe he's given me his permission?

-----
From the most important person to her...
From someone, who has already passed on.

That day weakened my view on the power of charms.
For her, that was probably her second farewell.
But, she never looked sad, even for a moment.
Whether or not the power of the charm made itself known, we were still there, smiling.

And so the seasons changed into summer, and then fall.
I was standing at a street corner; the meeting place for our date.
I was, of course, waiting for Miyazawa (I still feel too embarassed to use her first name).
The street was lined with many different charm items. We would spend our time window-shopping around these stores.
They were all fakes, though.
As was the books of charms from the reference room.
I could hear the voices of a group of girls off to the side.
They looked to be from a different school. Their seasonal uniforms were a sight to the eye. I couldn't help but look.

THUNK!
A can hit me upside the head.
Rubbing the back of my head, I turned around. Miyazawa was just coming up to the corner.
"I'm sorry for being late... Did you wait long?"
She asked me that with a pure smile on her face. She couldn't have thrown the can at me...
I looked around.
"Is something the matter?"
"No...."

.... He couldn't still be around, right?

It was like a cloud... no, it was a light.

"Yeah."
Seeing that she was about to fall, Ushio grabbing and held onto my neck.
