You're given free rein to complete the later volumes (except for NT Vol 2, since I don't know how many people will be 'crazy' enough to do that), including the incomplete ones. The other translators won't be working on it anyway.

I can't answer you through PM, so I'll just post this here. I've unlocked all the chapters for volume 1, except for prologue and afterword which you did. You can redo the other chapters, including chapter 1 and epilogue which I did. Just remember that people are also complaining about poor translations from 7-13, and I did 7-11. At the worst case scenario, you'll be asked to retranslate 7-13. (And as for the consistent translations thing, there's NT1 and NT4.) For now, I'm really only considering 1 and maybe 12-13 after that. What I'm mainly concerned about are accuracy issues since they can't be corrected in editing, and from what I've seen of your translations, that isn't really an issue. Hello. I wanted to check if you are planning to re-translate volume 13 of Index? I noticed that you indicated on Teh Ping's talk page that you were intending to re-translate/edit v12-13, and that after finishing v12 you started on the first chapter of v13. I have been reading through the series and editing the narrative of the older volumes into the past tense. I will be reaching volume 13 soon, but converting that volume to the past tense would be meaningless if you are planning to do a more thorough edit or a re-translation in the near future. Hey Js06. I've been editing the previously-translated parts of Volume 15, and I was wondering: Joay left a lot of terms in brackets like [GROUP] and the like. Should I just remove all of those? Also, if you can, please check some sentences that I've commented on to make sure they stay close enough to the original: I was kinda grasping at straws when trying to make them make sense in English. The brackets around GROUP were probably meant to emulate the Japanese-style quotation marks 『』 used in the novels, but they aren't really necessary. The Japanese like to put things in quotation marks to distinguish them in the same way capitalizing the word is sometimes used in English (e.g. Esper names like Meltdowner and AIM Stalker are put in quotes in the novels.) I used to puts things in quotes excessively in my translations because I was copying the Japanese usage, but I stopped recently.

Looking at your SS2 translations, I realized that you're doing them in past tense as opposed to present tense like you use in the other novels. Is the original material in past tense, or did you decide to start using more past tense? I do understand that the stories seem to have occurred before volume 16; is that why they're in past tense? Unfortunately, I have no idea what to tell you. Due to the way I learned Japanese, # of kanji known means nothing to me. I couldn't tell you how many I know or how many you need to know for a LN. You say you have been studying Japanese for several months, so my guess is you are not ready. It took me several years to be proficient enough to read a LN comfortably. Still, the only way to know for sure is to get one and try reading it, so I would suggest starting with one and seeing how well you do. Hello Js06. I have noticed that the current translations of Index Volumes 9 & 10 have the keywords of the arc literally translated instead of the part that is spoken. i.e. The base kanji is translated instead of the kana at the top. e.g. 追跡封じ is translated as 'tracking sealer' but is spoken as Route Disturb. This also goes for Shorthand and Croce di Pietro. I will go and fix these in my own time.
It is easy to find these literally translated terms as they have 'apostrophes' around them.

In the Volume 10 translation, in certain situations the word 'observatory' has apostrophes around it as well. Also, Index II episode 12 has the title 天文台, translated as 'astronomical observatory' but spoken as Belvedere. If you happen to have a copy, can you tell me if the word Belvedere is used in Volume 10 anywhere instead of observatory? It could explain why the word observatory has apostrophes around it. Hello again js06. I was looking at the earlier Index Volumes (1-13,SS1) and I have found that they are not up to scratch to what one would expect of a light novel translation (obviously not including your translations). A lot of the terms have been translated literally like in my above topic. There is little consistency in the terms used. Worst of all there are plenty of sentences throughout the volumes which are entirely capitalised. I am planning on starting from Volume 1 and try and fix things (including incorrect terminology and capitalised sentences) sometime later in the year. However, I do not actually have a physical copy of the earlier volumes so I have to rely on other methods of checking the original japanese (Manga Raws, Anime and Kanji on the Index Wikia).

I have found that the '''Toaru Majutsu no Index no Subete Glossary''' is a good reference for translation. However, aside from the already translated and modified version on the wiki, I dont have access to the original scans so I can double check the translations and see which parts have been modified or reinterpreted by the wiki. '''Do you happen to have a link to these scans?''' (There was a statement on the page that you were the one who translated it.)

Lastly, I will inevitably run into problems when fixing up the translations and will require a more experienced translator with an actual copy to answer some more volume-specific questions (like the Belvedere issue above). I've seen San Mercado's Japanese rendition translated as "Pure Metropolis". 大市 can mean either "big city" (metrópolis) or "big market". Given that 1)it's a brand and 2)"mercado" means "market", I'd say it should be translated as something like "big market", "central market", or even "supermarket". Translated into English from current Spanish it means "Saint Market", but in ancient Spanish "San Mercado" or "Santo Mercado" was closer in meaning to "Sacred Market". My dictionary gives me 清らか as "clean, pure, chaste". Looking at English synonyms, personally I'd translate 清らか大市 as "virtuous market", "unblemished mart" or something of the like.--~~

First of all js06, I just wanted to say thanks for going through all the work in translating the Toaru series (and many others) for us railgun/index fans who aren't very proficient in japanese. Now, as for the topic.... Myself and a few people I know have gotten into a little debate about how strong Othiinus really is. Some think her power to add filters is limited to the earth alone, while others think that she can effect the whole universe. To get to the point, I was a bit curious as to exactly what word was used to when the novel said that the world had ended, an exact example being this snippet from Othinus, ('''"Othinus shrugged. “Listen. The world has ended. It does not matter how. It is gone.'''")....I know that Japanese can be kind of wonkey and words can have multiple meanings, for instance, "hoshi" can mean both star and planet. In 4A chapter 11 when #8 is running towards Odor the text says that "they" are three meters apart then after a bit says they are now twenty meters apart and it's worded to sound like that is closer than the previous distance. Was the three meters supposed to be a different number or was "they" referring to a different group?

Also 4B chapter 18 describes the tree trunk as three meters wide at the end of the chapter and the following mentions of its size use thirty meters.

Hey lygo, I've heard that the chinese translations of volume 12 and 13 that you translated from were incomplete, and therefore your translations are, too.
I am not certain if this is true, though considering the volumes were incredibly short compared to previous ones I think it may be.
You might want to try checking if you can find complete chinese translations of these volumes.

Just a tip. You don't have to always keep the translation word-to-word with the Chinese version. When you translate, you can reword the sentence structure or even change the Chinese expression to something you'd say in English. This, I think, will make the flow better. Ling is Fong Lingyin according to Wiki and Fan Rinin in the anime, it is also written as Huang Ling Yin in another place.

Which should we use?

Regarding the spell error/wicked blade in V1C3, i believe spell error works better. However, it is up to you as to how it is properly translated. - Bzk

Spell Error is the reading, you can in fact call it the actual name, Wicked Blade is the writing. One should always read it as Spell Error. I only include the writing if it provides interesting and somewhat vital information that would be lost if only the reading is included. This is a style used by Kagami. I just haven't added a translation note yet. Well I forgot and will do it later. Even for Epee Rapier, he used Thrusting Blade and Slender Blade as the writing, but I didn't include those, because they are not interesting information to the plot; he did that for Epee Rapier so that Japanese people reading it can have an idea how it looks like, since they might be foreign to fencing swords. In other cases otherwise, there's a reason behind the multiple meanings, just like Vampire (Most Ancient Sorcerer). Not extremely important, but nevertheless interesting. And that's where the manga translation failed; everyone who has read that including reviewers thought that this is just another vampire story. While in truth, there's more to that. Kagami is a very prolific fantasy writer (well, he writes fast) and he has a love for epic-ness, and I can see Itsuten going well over 10 volumes; I won't be surprised if it goes over 20. ^_^ --[[User:Larethian|Larethian]] 15:40, 10 April 2011 (UCT)

==Who gave you the green light to change my synopsis?==

To answer your question, no one? Well, it was pretty long ago, so please excuse me if I can't recall my exact thought processes at the time. I don't believe I knew that I was supposed to ask for permission with regards to the story synopsis at that point in time because I was still pretty new to BT then, and by the time I became "in the know" about project supervisors as well as the rules and regulations regarding the issues, it had completely slipped my mind.
What I wanted to do at that point in time was to improve the synopsis to how I felt it would be better, but it did not occur to me to actually ask for permission to do so then, so my sincere apologies for that. In addition, I did not know that it was actually that important a synopsis, I thought it was something akin to an introduction, if you will, to the story, just like those you see on normal wiki pages or on manga reading websites for example, so my thoughts were to make the flow better.

I now understand that it was a wholly mistaken assumption of mine that changing it like that would be better, as you mentioned that it is best to keep it as close to source material as possible.

Very sorry for an almost month-and-a-half long wait. I wasn't sure exactly how to go about editing it for a while, then school caught up with me and I was swamped for most of October. I'm still swamped, but I started editing it anyway. I started on Chapter 1, but realized I have several major style questions, so I thought I would post the Prologue first before I went on.

I began editing in a Google Doc instead of on here because of the many small edits I wanted to make that I wasn't sure about; you can look them over and then approve/reject/comment on them, and then I will add the edits separately onto the Baka-Tsuki page. Here it is:

I am interest to see how they are going to adapt this in the anime, especially that one illustration in volume 4 (you know what I am talking about). For High School DxD, it was easy because there is not really any long skin-to-skin scene, but for this novel, they either gotta have to cut out some, which will make the adaptation worse than the novel, or keep it at it is, which will kidda make the adaptation receive the moaning of all those "critics". I'm just reading the 1st volume, but skipped ahead to check out parts of Vol 2 & 3 to check out whether they nullify the Master-Servant Contract or not... (Apparently not, even though a sentence in Vol3 read "Basara will, and thereafter, link the master-servant contract to Yuki ''and then followed by Mio''.)

From what I saw all novels could use some editing. Vol 1 seems passable, but there are portions of Volume 2 & 3 which are full of grammatical errors or such. A portion from Vol 3 actually looked like MT & was pretty hard to understand.

Calling someone 'brother' is pretty rare in English. One would usually use the 1st name.
The Japanese Onii-chan/san doesn't give the same feel as brother in English, and for this series would be better fit... At least I think so.

Ahh I see, btw do you use IRC, most of the active baka-tsuki community is on it, it's really useful for communicating. I use it to talk to my tlers like Krytyk for edits and changes on projects. If you need help getting started on it you can ask me. About the tler and editor thing, from what I know of and looking at other projects, it's assume that the tler will edit somewhat to a degree his work. It's not always the case but editors are just solely for editing and proposing beneficial changes to the project in general. Hello. I have just registered to Baka Tsuki and I would like to thank you for your Radukai Kishi No Calvalry translations. Being one of my most favorite anime series, I am reading the light novel as well and without your dedicated support, these translations would not be here. Altering reading many descriptions of various users, I came to the realization that not everyone speaks the language that they are translating fluently and that they are usually in the process of learning Japanese themselves. I would like to contribute by any means whether it be though editing, proofreading etc as I am a native American Speaker. Through this, I would hope to gain some experience and improve my Japanese Skills. There are a few questions that I have. 1. How do you translate? I would like to know how difficult it is to translate. Do you need to be well versed in the language? Or do you just need to know how to read it? 2. Do you need to know how to read Chinese? Hi Just4fun101! Editing and proofreading in English won't really give you experience and improvement in Japanese translation skill; for that, you really do have to translate. The difficulty of translation depends entirely on your mastery of your source and target languages, so I can't really say how difficult it will be for you. The ability to read both languages is vital, but familiarity with spoken forms is often useful because colloquialisms from speech are common. Hi rxls. I'm not clear on which edits you specifically mean to make, so please give more detailed examples. I am aware that Rakudai's project is not formatted the same as other projects on Baka-Tsuki, and this is intentional, justified by the Baka-Tsuki policy of each project having its own formatting standards. If you see instances which are not consistent within the Rakudai project, feel free to make corrections, but if the instances are consistent within Rakudai but not consistent with the rest of Baka-Tsuki, they were probably decided intentionally and should not be changed merely to create external consistency (but I'm always open to discussion about them). --[[User:KLSymph|KLSymph]] ([[User talk:KLSymph#top|talk]]) 20:51, 12 August 2017 (CEST)

Hello KLSymph and thanks for your reply. I never change the general layout of a project. The consistency refers to each specific project. For example to Chrome Shelled Regios 23 Volumes out of 25 had the same layout. I only changed the format of v19/v20 in order to follow the rest of volumes. Now regarding Rakudai, I'm refering to edits like v04: = Chapter One: Training Camp = -> = Chapter 1: Training Camp = for consistency.
Apart from that is there a specific reason that you aren't using "noinclude" before "references/"? This results in the Full Volume "References" to intervene between text (check ToC). On the contrary if you use "noinclude" before, then all the references will be presented at the end of each volume, whereas the presentation of each individual chapter will remain unaffected. Compare the three different layouts of FULL Volumes.
01_Rakudai where the references intervene between text.
02.Denpa Onna where all the references are at the end of the volume.
03 Absolute Duo where all the references are at the end of the volume but separated in groups.

The smaller internal-consistency fixes are fine. The noinclude of references is indeed intentional. I prefer references to be attached to specific chapters in the full volume text rather than placed at the end, as they are written to be chapter references and not volume references (even as viewed in the full text). It's a complex balancing of priorities against expected usage patterns, but in a first-time full read-through which is perhaps the most important for a new reader, a listing of references at the end of the text leads to a reader seeing all the definitions long after the referred passages are past, as compared to at the end of a chapter. This is not ideal as a layout, in terms of absorbing the meanings when doing so is most relevant. Hi there. I currently intend to translate volume zero of Rakudai Kishi before volume seven, but at the moment I am busy with other translation work, such as the Rakudai manga. If you would like to join Baka-Tsuki's Rakudai project, you may register the parts you'd like to translate in the project registration page, even if you intend to host it externally, in which case we would post a link from the wiki to your pages. However, a condition on joining Baka-Tsuki's Rakudai project is that I (as project manager) am allowed to conduct quality control on the translated text in order to maintain consistency in terminology and readability across the entire project. This means I will need to be able to edit and even retranslate part of your work as I deem necessary (and I will need to do this frequently), which is easier to do on the wiki. Also, my creative decisions as project manager have to override those of others in case of disagreement, to preserve a singular vision for the project and avoid quality inconsistencies caused by design-by-committee. Naturally, I understand that these conditions are quite unbalanced in my favor and not easily acceptable by others. If you would like to translate Rakudai but not as part of my project, I encourage you to do so and I would be happy to link to them from the project wiki, but the likely consequence is that eventually the project's translation by myself or whoever joins me will reach the parts of the story you've translated, at which time the links to your site will be superseded by the wiki's translation on Baka-Tsuki. No this is very typical with series in Hobby Japan. Either the author ran out of steam, is sick or currently working on something else. Or the artist is busy working on a different project. Just don't consider anything licensed by Hobby to be typical. They release whenever they feel like. I feel like they don't really set deadlines for their authors.

Well, to answer your question. There is no one working on Volume 2 or 3 (covered in the anime); 4 is complete and volume 5 had chapter 1 completed a bit ago. [[User:Joegargery|Joegargery]] shows Volume 5 chapter 2 as complete though it was never uploaded? Overall, it's sketchy whether or not this will every really pick up or not. I've been avidly waiting for about 3 and a half years now :3.
