　Hace cuatro años, un conjunto de municipios se unió para formar la mayor ciudad costera del país, Ciudad N. En esta metrópolis podían encontrarse tanto edificios antiguos como modernos rascacielos, y cada distrito parecía tener su propio diseño. Algunos distritos tenían una atmósfera claramente futurista, y otros contenían montañas de escombros abandonados. Ciudad N tenía lo último en tecnología, incluyendo los mejores tratamientos médicos y el hospital más grande del mundo. Al mismo tiempo, muchos grandes negocios de la ciudad fracasaron y acabaron en la ruina. Estas dos caras opuestas de Ciudad N la hacían única. Los que aseguraban haberlas visto daban cientos de testimonios distintos, y cada vez eran más disparatados. Aseguraban que una chica lanzaba coches como si no pesaran nada, que otra se transformaba en agua e incluso que había una bruja volando con su escoba por el cielo nocturno.

　También hubo cierto incidente en el que unos niños jugando al fútbol lanzaron la pelota a las vías del tren. Como suele pasar en estas historias, fueron a recogerla sin darse cuenta de que el tren estaba llegando. Y entonces, según dicen, «una chica vestida de caballero» apareció y detuvo el tren. Además había algunas historias inexplicables, como la de una chica vestida de perro corriendo a cuatro patas. La gente pensaba que el origen de la mayoría de estos rumores eran adolescentes retándose a vestirse de forma estrafalaria y hacer tonterías.

　Todos estos incidentes se consideraban leyendas urbanas y, en un principio, la gente se burlaba de los rumores de chicas mágicas. Sin embargo, curiosamente, había cierta consistencia en todos ellos. Todas esas situaciones, trajes y habilidades parecían salidos de la imaginación de un cuentista, pero las historias no dejaban de aparecer. Cada vez más gente decía haber visto cosas similares.

　Por supuesto, los testimonios se apilaban en la red. Alguien creó un sitio web para documentar todas estas historias e incluso subir vídeos de las supuestas chicas mágicas. Claro que, normalmente, eran de muy mala calidad y la cámara no dejaba de moverse. Fue entonces cuando empezaron a aparecer los debates.

　—¡Ese vídeo era real! ¡Eso no se puede hacer con efectos especiales!

　—¿Pero qué dices? ¿Es que no has visto nunca una peli de esas que parecen caseras? ¡Claro que se hacen con efectos especiales, no seas paleto!

　Ya fuera en el trabajo, en clase o en internet, siempre surgía el mismo tema. De cuando en cuando, alguien aseguraba que una de estas chicas mágicas le había ayudado.

　—Me salvó la vida y me quedé ahí pillado hasta que se me ocurrió preguntarle «¿quién eres?», y me dijo «una chica mágica».

　Con toda esta cantidad de testigos, no tardó en aparecer lo inevitable: el movimiento fan. Se crearon páginas web dedicadas a las chicas, e incluso algunas que intentaban explicar científicamente su existencia. Las chicas mágicas se convirtieron en iconos. La gente empezó a reunir más información sobre ellas, y las webs se actualizaban a diario con las últimas noticias y rumores. De hecho, en una de las últimas actualizaciones, se hablaba de una chica mágica muy interesante.

　Según la página, en cierto lugar del barrio chino, en una mansión abandonada que se creía un refugio de la mafia local, se había avistado a una chica mágica vestida de vaquera. Al parecer, las fuentes de la página indicaban que traficaba con armas y que podía estar relacionada con la mafia.

　—Chicas, ¿habéis visto lo que acaban de pasar por el grupo? —preguntó una joven de secundaria esperando en la parada del autobús.

　El smartphone que enseñaba a sus dos amigas mostraba una de las páginas sobre chicas mágicas.

　—¿En serio? Sí que te gustan estas cosas, ¿no? Sabes que son todas de mentira, ¿verdad?

　—¿Perdona? ¿De qué hablas? ¡Esto es totalmente real!

　—Y encima lo envía un anónimo, como para fiarse.

　—¡Es anónimo para que no le pille la mafia! ¡Hasta puede que el tío sea un mafioso! Si no, ¿cómo iba a saber dónde están sus escondites y cómo funcionan?

　—¿Va en serio? Venga, vamos a suponer que es verdad. ¿Por qué iba un mafioso a subir algo así? Si hubiera una chica mágica trabajando para ellos, ¿por qué iban a decírselo a todo el mundo?

　—Tía, eres una aguafiestas.

　—Solo estoy siendo realista, nada más.

　—¿Pero no sería mucho más emocionante vivir en un mundo con chicas mágicas?

　Mientras las dos estudiantes estaban inmersas en su conversación, la tercera estaba sentada en silencio, escuchando, pero finalmente decidió intervenir.

　Sus compañeras miraron a su amiga antes de compartir una mirada entre ellas.

　—Vaya, gracias por darnos tu opinión, Koyuki. Estaría bien que las cosas fueran así, ¿eh?

　—Ya te vale, Koyuki. Eres demasiado idealista.

　Justo detrás de las tres adolescentes había un edificio de siete pisos. En el tejado, sin que ellas lo supieran, había otra joven que compartía sus pensamientos. Llevaba una ropa muy excéntrica. Tenía un diseño rojo y negro, con patrones que recordaban a shuriken. Su calzado consistía en genpa, zapatos de madera tradicionales. Realmente, parecía más un disfraz que ropa de calle. Ella también estaba mirando su móvil; de hecho, la misma página que las tres estudiantes. Se preguntó en voz alta «¿será ella...?». Acto seguido, la chica cambió de aplicación y el teléfono emitió una luz en forma de corazón. Al instante, el diseño de su smartphone se transformó. Era un móvil mágico, con casillas blancas y negras, como las de un tablero de ajedrez, y una pantalla en forma de corazón. De él surgió una extraña criatura, también en forma de corazón, con la mitad izquierda blanca y la derecha negra. Tenía ojos, pero no boca, y unas pequeñas alas que no dejaba de agitar. Cada vez que lo hacía, emitía unas lucecitas brillantes. Su voz era infantil, aguda y encantadora. Se trataba de la mascota del juego, y su nombre era Fav.

　—¿Es la pistolera, pon? ¿Es grave, pon? —preguntó Fav desde el teléfono.

　La criaturita esférica estaba tan entusiasmada que dio un salto mortal, lo que liberó más estrellas relucientes.

　—Si de verdad es Calamity Mary y se le ha ido la pinza, madre mía. ¡Vamos a tener que andarnos con mucho ojo, pon!

　Calamity Mary era la chica mágica que vivía en el barrio chino. En un principio, se le asignó la zona para que fuera su protectora, su guardiana local. Recientemente, sin embargo, Calamity Mary se había mostrado más inclinada a considerarlo su territorio que otra cosa. Cruel, sádica, salvaje... los actos que la chica mágica había cometido desde entonces la habían dado a conocer. Por tanto, Fav la consideraba ajena al sistema.

　—Me pregunto quién habrá subido estas imágenes. Desde luego, yo no he sido, pon. ¿Habrán sido las otras chicas mágicas, pon?

　La joven no dudó pasar su pulgar por la pantalla y pasar a la siguiente noticia. En esta ocasión, trataba sobre un rostro más familiar.

　—Ah, sí. Snow White ha estado trabajando más que ninguna de vosotras. ¡No me extraña que la haya visto tanta gente, pon! ¡Mira, mira, hasta le han dedicado su propia categoría en esa web, pon!

　El personaje esférico se materializó instantáneamente fuera del móvil. Seguía teniendo la misma forma cilíndrica, casi ridícula en el mundo real.

　—¡Y eso es solo el principio, pon! ¡Solo lleva unas semanas como chica mágica, pero ya ha doblado su productividad inicial!

　Mientras Fav alababa a la chica mágica blanca, saltaba de un lado a otro agitando las alas, provocando los mismos efectos brillantes en la realidad que en el teléfono. Mientras tanto, la joven pasó a la siguiente noticia.

　—¡Ripple, ni has mirado la categoría de Snow White, pon!

　—No.

　—¿Detecto una rivalidad entre vosotras, pon?

　—Para nada. Es solo que todo lo que hace es más de lo mismo. No hace falta estudiarlo todo.

　—¡Las rivalidades son buenas, pon! ¡Refuerzan el carácter! ¡Crean amistades irrompibles! ¡Competir con otros solo trae cosas buenas, pon!

　—... Lo que tú digas.

　La chica, Ripple, apartó la vista de la pantalla. Estiró las piernas, se levantó, enfundó el móvil en su cinturón y saltó al vacío desde el borde del tejado. Era una caída de más de veinte metros, y aun así aterrizó sin sonido alguno.

　—¿Por qué has saltado así de repente, pon? —preguntó Fav, aún en el tejado.

　—Para alejarme de una pesada —contestó Ripple desde la lejanía.

　—Hala... parece que estamos gruñones, pon...

　En el cielo, un pequeño punto en la distancia parecía aumentar gradualmente de tamaño. Mientras Fav mantenía su mirada puesta en Ripple, la distante figura voladora se aproximaba. Tras un tiempo, empezó a adquirir forma humana, y cuando se acercó finalmente al tejado, Fav la identificó y gritó de alegría.

　—¡Top Speed!

　Una bruja montada en escoba, la chica mágica conocida como Top Speed, pasó a toda velocidad junto al tejado, directa a la calle de abajo. Frenó en seco delante de Ripple y la miró a los ojos.

　—¡Ripple! ¿Qué tal estos días? ¡Te veo sana y salva! ¡Espero que no te hayas dejado las verduras en el plato!

　Ripple respondió a su efusivo saludo refunfuñando y frunciendo el ceño. Top Speed replicó a su reacción con una sonrisa traviesa.

　—¡Tan maja como siempre!

　—... Tendría que haber echado a correr antes.

　—¡Venga ya! ¡Las chicas mágicas tenemos que estar unidas!

　—Sí, claro...

　—En fin, no he venido solo a cotillear, ¡aunque eso también!

　La forma de hablar de Top Speed, su tono, su ritmo... Todo ello irritaba a Ripple. Ripple siempre intentaba aguantarse, y ni siquiera parecía que Top Speed se hubiera dado cuenta alguna vez. O quizá sí fuera consciente y lo hiciera a propósito. Ripple no tenía forma de saberlo.

　Top Speed sacó su móvil y le enseñó a Ripple la web de las noticias locales.

　—¿Has visto esto?

　Era de Noticias de Ciudad N, una de las fuentes de información más populares y respetables de la ciudad. Ripple leyó el titular: «Avistamientos de chicas mágicas: similitudes con objetos y trajes del juego Proyecto de Crianza de Chicas Mágicas».

　Ripple se encogió de hombros.

　—Pues han empezado a atar cabos. ¿Nos importa?

　Sin advertencia previa, Fav apareció detrás de ella.

　—¡¿Cómo?! ¡Pues claro que nos importa, pon!

　Fav estaba flotando en círculos, frenético.

　—¡Si se supieran vuestros nombres reales o se filtrara información sobre las chicas mágicas, esto se volvería muy peligroso, pon!

　Las chispas que despedía empezaron a amontonarse en el suelo.

　—¡Y lo peor es que sea Noticias de Ciudad N quien publica el artículo! ¡¿Es que no saben que son de las pocas empresas que anuncian nuestro juego?! ¡¿Cómo se les ocurre hacerle esto a sus aliados comerciales, pon?!

　Escuchar a una esfera blanca y negra comentar medidas económicas no era lo más raro que Ripple había oído en su vida. Desde que se convirtió en una chica mágica, Ripple estaba convencida de que pocas cosas podrían sorprenderla, de todas formas. Aún recordaba la primera vez que se transformó, hacía apenas dos meses. El día en que Kano Sazanami se transformó en una chica mágica.

　Se decía que había una probabilidad de uno entre diez mil de convertirse en una chica mágica de verdad. Pero, como Kano bien sabía, eso solo era una leyenda urbana. Durante la mayor parte de su vida, ella había sido una joven problemática. Ya en la guardería solía pelearse con todos los que se metían con ella. Tuvo muchos problemas con su agresividad, y su comportamiento no cambió en toda su educación secundaria. Al final, ella, su madre y su padrastro se mudaron de su chalé a un apartamento. En su trabajo a tiempo parcial, Kano siempre estaba seria y concentrada. Tenía que trabajar para ganar dinero, tanto para el presente como para el futuro. Con el aburrimiento del trabajo, necesitaba un hobby para distraerse. Y Kano Sazanami tenía un principio muy claro sobre el entretenimiento: no gastar nada de dinero. En ese momento, sus hobbies incluían la lectura, y por tanto se limitaba a los libros y manga que encontraba en la biblioteca. Después de un tiempo, consiguió ahorrar lo suficiente para comprar un smartphone barato. Con la competitividad de la industria, Kano sabía que tarde o temprano aparecería uno a buen precio. Con ese móvil llegó su nuevo hobby, un juego llamado Proyecto de Crianza de Chicas Mágicas.

　Había muchos juegos supuestamente gratuitos en la tienda, pero, en realidad, para progresar en muchos de ellos tenías que pagar dinero real. El Proyecto de Crianza de Chicas Mágicas era distinto, gratuito de verdad. Y no solo eso, sino que además carecía de la mentalidad de otorgar ventajas a los compradores que solían tener estos juegos. Kano podía jugarlo sin gastarse ni un yen.

　La primera vez que oyó hablar del juego fue en clase. Un par de compañeras lo estaban comentando, y su valoración variaba entre «infantil» y «bastante divertido», de forma que decidió probarlo por sí misma. El juego era sencillo. Primero, diseñabas el avatar de tu personaje, la chica mágica. Después, completabas misiones para conseguir objetos, desde cartas que te enseñaban más hechizos a equipo que aumentaba tus estadísticas, como en cualquier RPG. Derrotar a los monstruos daba caramelos mágicos, que eran básicamente la moneda del juego. Podías usar los caramelos para subir de nivel a tu chica mágica o para comprar nuevos objetos de la tienda. Te ibas haciendo más fuerte para enfrentarte a enemigos cada vez más poderosos en un ciclo sin fin. Era una fórmula sencilla pero efectiva. Lo mejor es que no había que pagar por prácticamente nada; todo se podía conseguir jugando. Además, aunque era un juego principalmente multijugador, era perfectamente posible pasárselo todo en solitario. A Kano no le importó que la estética del juego fuera infantil, de chicas mágicas. Al fin y al cabo, hubo un tiempo, cuando Kano era pequeña, en el que disfrutaba con las chicas mágicas de la tele.

　Alrededor de una semana después de empezar a jugar, ocurrió algo extraño. La mascota del juego, Fav, la miró directamente, se colocó en el centro de la pantalla y habló.

　—¡Enhorabuena, pon! ¡Has sido elegida para convertirte en una chica mágica de verdad!

　Kano estaba algo confusa. Esperó a que se activara algún evento, o por lo menos a que apareciera el botón de saltar el diálogo. De repente, su móvil emitió una luz brillante que la cubrió por completo, y Kano sintió que el mundo a su alrededor se fundía con uno nuevo. Y no era solo eso: sus ropas se habían transformado en otras. Se había convertido en su avatar del juego, en el personaje que había diseñado. Se había convertido en Ripple. Kano miró a sus manos, a sus pies, a su rostro en el reflejo del móvil. Tras tomar nota de los cambios, se pellizcó la mejilla. Seguía sintiendo dolor, como siempre. No estaba alucinando. Intentó llegar a una conclusión razonable, y decidió que debía de estar muy cansada de las clases y el trabajo. No le hacía mucha gracia, pero si no era eso, ¿cómo iba a explicarlo? Acababa de transformarse en una chica mágica. Ya había confirmado que estaba despierta, e incluso reconocía su nuevo traje; exactamente la ropa que había elegido para su avatar. No había ninguna otra explicación posible. Se había transformado en Ripple, y no estaba soñando.

　Kano cerró su mano derecha en un puño y golpeó su mano izquierda, que recibió el impacto con la palma abierta. Le pareció que su fuerza era la misma de siempre, pero no había terminado de comprobarlo. Su mirada se fijó en la ventana a su espalda. Se levantó y, de nuevo, formó un puño con su mano derecha y golpeó el cristal. Normalmente, Kano solo habría conseguido hacerse daño en los nudillos. El cristal era demasiado grueso para que Kano Sazanami pudiera romperlo. Pero para Ripple, fue como si estuviera hecho de papel. Su fuerza era increíble. Se sentía una persona nueva. Decidió seguir probando su cuerpo transformado, esta vez saltando. Se agachó ligeramente, preparándose, flexionó las piernas y saltó. Su cabeza chocó contra el techo, haciéndolo crujir y desprendiendo algunos fragmentos. A su casero no le iba a gustar nada.

　Hubo otra cosa que llamó la atención de Kano: no había sentido ningún dolor realizando esos actos. Normalmente debería haberle dolido, pero ni siquiera había golpes ni arañazos en su piel. De hecho, examinándose detenidamente, no había cambiado nada físicamente. Su piel seguía siendo suave y normal, al igual que su pelo. Incluso su traje, a pesar de su extravagancia, parecía normal. Solo su fuerza y habilidad parecían haber aumentado de alguna forma. Parecía humana, pero estaba claro que no lo era. Kano era algo más. Los rumores eran ciertos: el Proyecto de Crianza de Chicas Mágicas podía crear chicas mágicas reales.

　Se miró en un espejo de cuerpo completo, quedando impresionada ante su propio reflejo. Era innegable que seguía siendo ella, pero también era algo más. Hermosa, increíble, espectacular. Todas esas eran palabras que usaría para definir lo que veía en el espejo. No parecía Kano Sazanami, sino Ripple, la chica mágica. No pudo evitar hacer poses, sintiéndose cautivada y feliz consigo misma. Encontró el kunai y los shuriken que había en su cinturón, y también posó con ellos. A pesar de todo, y aunque todo esto le parecía maravilloso, no se sentía como una chica mágica ideal.

　—¿Qué haces, pon? —preguntó Fav desde el teléfono.

　Ripple se apartó, sobresaltada. Miró a su móvil, donde Fav se reía de las poses que practicaba frente al espejo. Su cara se tiñó de rojo. Estaba avergonzada, pero recuperó rápidamente la compostura suficiente para volver a hablar en un tono normal.

　—¿Quién... eres?

　—¿Yo? ¡Soy Fav, pon! ¡Con lo que has jugado, deberías saber quién soy, pon!

　—No, sé quién eres, no me refiero a eso. Quiero decir... ¿qué se supone que eres? ¿Cuál es tu función?

　—¿Oh? ¡Puedes considerarme tu ayudante! ¡Tu asistente personal! ¡Si tienes alguna duda sobre las chicas mágicas, me encantará resolverla, pon!

　Sus palabras implicaban que había más de una chica mágica. Por supuesto, era muy difícil que ella fuera la primera.

　—Entiendo. Entonces... «un ser de una belleza muy superior a la de este mundo». Eso decía el juego, ¿no?

　—¿Qué pasa? ¿No te gusta tu aspecto, pon?

　—No, no es eso.

　El avatar de Kano era Ripple. La había diseñado como una ninja fantástica y, por tanto, la mayor parte de su traje era negra. Kano era morena en la vida real, así que hizo que Ripple también lo fuera. Pensó que un traje de ninja tradicional sería aburrido, así que lo que creó fue una mezcla entre un kimono y un bikini. Como le seguía pareciendo muy mundano, le puso una coleta a su personaje. Y ya que necesitaba algo para sujetarla, continuó con la temática ninja y usó un shuriken enorme. Con eso, ya parecía un personaje fantástico. Aun así, Kano aún tenía dudas. Le chirriaba que todo fuera negro. Era demasiado simple, de modo que otorgó a Ripple una gigantesca bufanda roja. Con dos colores y un buen diseño, Ripple estaba completa. No era exactamente una chica mágica, sino una ninja.

Y a la hora de darle un nombre, tampoco se complicó mucho. Su apellido, Sazanami, significaba onda, que en inglés era ''ripple''. En ese momento, se le ocurrió que sería interesante darle un nombre inglés a una ninja totalmente oriental, pero ahora le parecía que eso no era adecuado para una chica mágica.

　—... ¿Puedo cambiar de traje?

　—¿Ahora? ¡Lo siento, pero ya es permanente, pon!

　—Ah, entiendo...

　—¿Qué pasa? ¿No estás satisfecha con tu traje, pon?

　—No es eso...

　Fav continuó con su explicación sobre el nuevo rol de Ripple. Como chica mágica, había sido elegida para ayudar a los demás, a los necesitados y a todo el que tuviera problemas. No obstante, a Ripple no le interesaba hacer nada de eso. Por más increíbles que fueran sus poderes y por más que disfrutara de la idea de ser una chica mágica, lo cierto era que a Ripple no le iba demasiado bien en su vida diaria. No podía imaginarse cómo iba a sacar tiempo para ayudar a otros.

　—¡No te preocupes demasiado, pon! ¡Con mi ayuda y tu nuevo móvil mágico, estarás salvando gente en un periquete, pon!

　—¿Ayuda? ¿A qué te refieres?

　—Bueno, si necesitas comunicarte con otras chicas mágicas, yo te pondré en contacto con ellas, pon. ¡Y por supuesto, también resolveré tus dudas sobre chicas mágicas, pon!

　—Vale... pues aquí va mi primera pregunta: ¿qué es una chica mágica?

　—¡Las chicas mágicas son chicas mágicas, pon! ¿Es que no ves la tele? ¡Hay muchos anime sobre ellas, pon!

　—Sé lo que es una chica mágica, pero pensaba que en la vida real no sería tan simple como lo vemos la tele. ¿Qué soy, exactamente?

　—Oh, ya lo entiendo, pon. ¡Bueno, la mejor forma de explicarlo es que eres una chica a la que se han concedido habilidades mágicas desde la Tierra de la Magia para ayudar a la gente, pon! Es simple, ¿no?

　—¡No! ¡No me des la respuesta fácil! ¿Qué magia? ¿Por qué a mí? ¿Qué es la Tierra de la Magia?

　—¿Nunca has visto la tele, pon?

　—¿Qué respuesta es esa? ¡Empieza desde el principio!

　—¡Vale, pon! Vamos a asumir que no sabes nada. ¡Lo primero que debes saber es que esta decisión de convertirte en chica mágica es definitiva, pon! ¡Ya no hay vuelta atrás, pon!

　Eso sonaba muy sospechoso. No había forma de que Kano fuera una buena chica mágica. Tenía que pensar en su futuro. Quería ir a la universidad, y si acababa metida en todo esto, le sería imposible. Y lo peor era que no parecía tener forma de negarse a participar. ¿Se decidía por sorteo? ¿Había algún tipo de talento que determinara si ibas a ser una chica mágica? Kano no tenía ni la más remota idea, pero por el momento, asentía y escuchaba.

　Kano era así. Se consideraba realista, pero tampoco era fácil alterarla. Algo tan ridículo como esto podía descolocarla en un principio, pero ella nunca tardaba en recomponerse y retomar el ritmo. Así era como había vivido su vida hasta ahora. Por poco que le gustara la idea de ir ayudando a otros, tendría que encontrar alguna forma de encajarlo en su horario. Fav parecía haber percibido su incomodidad.

　—Veo que no estás interesada, pon. ¡Por desgracia, la decisión no es tuya, pon!

　Después de eso, Fav siguió explicando los detalles de su nuevo futuro, pero lo que preocupó a Kano fueron sus siguientes palabras:

　—¡Vas a tener una mentora, pon! ¡Una chica mágica veterana que te enseñará personalmente todo lo que necesitas saber!

　Oh, no. Eso a Kano no le gustaba ni un pelo. La gente le resultaba irritante; nunca se le había dado muy bien comunicarse con otras personas. En el juego, se limitó a usar tutoriales y aprendió por sí misma. Nunca necesitó preguntarle nada a nadie, por suerte. Siempre había tenido más problemas aún con los que actuaban como si fueran líderes. No le gustaba que intentaran controlar a los demás. En general, detestaba tratar con otra gente, fuera como fuera. Por eso mismo jugaba al Proyecto de Crianza de Chicas Mágicas. No iba a aceptar ningún tipo de interacción humana.

　Fue entonces cuando apareció la supuesta mentora de Ripple, la chica mágica conocida como Top Speed. Las primeras palabras en cruzar la mente de Ripple fueron «estúpida» y «molesta». Solo con ver su atuendo, Ripple determinó que iba a ser un horror tratar con ella. Llevaba un sombrero de bruja, una escoba mágica y un traje negro. Era la viva imagen de una bruja clásica, con grandes ojos azules y cabello rubio en gigantescas trenzas a su espalda. Llevaba también una bolsita colgada del cuello y una sonrisa llena de seguridad. Bien podría llevar «mi opinión es irrelevante» escrito en la bolsa, pensó Ripple. Su escoba tampoco era exactamente una escoba. Sí lo era a veces, pero cuando se montaba en ella, la parte delantera se transformaba en una moto, con manillar y silenciador incluidos. Por la cabeza de Ripple solo pasaba un pensamiento: «por favor, no». La opinión que Ripple podía haber tenido de Top Speed como veterana se desplomó. Entonces, la bruja habló.

　—¡Hey! ¡Encantada, soy Top Speed!

　—... Hola.

　—¿Te gusta el arroz? ¡A mí me encanta, jajaja!

　Tanto su saludo como su forma de hablar le resultaron irritantes. Su opinión de la bruja se hundió aún más.

　Top Speed se sentó, e incluso invitó a Ripple a hacer lo mismo. Ella prefirió permanecer en pie mientras Top Speed continuaba explicando las bases de ser una chica mágica. Le contó que su propósito era ayudar a los demás, y también que al hacerlo se recibían caramelos mágicos.

　—¿Así que ayudas a la gente para conseguir... caramelos?

　—En el juego, los consigues derrotando enemigos, ¿no? Pues mala suerte, en la vida real no existen.

　Top Speed seguía dando su lección, con una mirada que indicaba que sabía mucho del tema. Ripple la escuchaba, aunque su opinión de ella aún no había cambiado.

　La bruja la enseñó a usar el móvil mágico. Le explicó que solo podían usarlo las chicas mágicas, pero que funcionaba igual que un smartphone cualquiera. Ripple curioseó en su móvil y encontró su página personal. Top Speed le contó que estaba diseñada expresamente para cada chica mágica, y mostraba casi todos los datos que existían sobre ella. Así descubrió que su altura y su peso habían cambiado, aunque ella no lo había notado al transformarse. Al parecer, era un poco más alta, alcanzando los 175 centímetros. Eso era algo más alto que el japonés medio, que no estaba mal. Ripple echó un vistazo a la categoría llamada personalidad, que indicaba «tendencia a responder con violencia ante las provocaciones». Esa afirmación la irritó bastante, y supuso que la habían descrito a la perfección. Finalmente, llegó a la columna de habilidad mágica. En ella había una descripción de la habilidad única de Ripple: dar siempre en el blanco al lanzar shuriken.

　—¿Eh? ¿Eso es todo?

　—¿Qué pasa? —preguntó Top Speed.

　—Solo... solo hay una habilidad mágica.

　Top Speed se limitó a asentir y encogerse de hombros. La sorpresa se dibujó en el rostro de Ripple.

　—¡¿Qué?! ¡Si en el juego tenías un montón de habilidades mágicas! ¡Esa era la gracia! ¡Mejorabas tus habilidades, conseguías cartas para obtener nuevos poderes y subías de nivel!

　—Pero en la vida real no es así, por desgracia —respondió Top Speed con sencillez.

　Ripple pensó en su personaje del juego. La había diseñado para ser una ninja perfecta, centrada principalmente en hechizos de fuego. Y ahora que se había convertido en una chica mágica de verdad, ¿solo podía usar shuriken? Se sabe que los ninja son clásicos, ¿pero un poder que solo te permite acertar con shuriken? ¿No era un poco... débil? Al ver la desilusión de Ripple, Top Speed retomó la conversación.

　—Va, parece que vas a necesitar un cursillo rápido. Te voy a dar un par de normas que recordar. Número uno: las chicas mágicas nunca deben revelar su identidad en público. ¿Queda claro?

　Tenía sentido. Si la gente lo supiera, podrían tener muchos problemas.

　—Número dos: las chicas mágicas no hablan del tema en público. Y con eso me refiero a todo este proceso. Ni una palabra. Nada. Nunca. ¿Vale?

　Ripple asintió. Si había chicas mágicas más veteranas, debían de haber seguido estas reglas estrictamente. Ripple nunca había visto a ninguna en persona, y la mayor parte de sus avistamientos eran rumores o testimonios de primera mano. Aun así, quería saciar su curiosidad.

　—¿Qué pasa si rompes esas reglas?

　—Que te echan del club de las chicas mágicas. Se te acaba la fiesta y te vas a casa. Seguramente haya más cosas, pero yo no lo sé. Aún no me las he saltado —explicó Top Speed.

　Por esas palabras, Ripple pensó que quizá hubiera una forma de dejar de ser una chica mágica. ¿Pero se atrevería a intentarlo? Si rompía esas reglas, no solo se ponía en peligro a sí misma, sino también a todas las demás.

　—Y hay otra cosa que tengo que contarte, Ripple.

　—¿Y bien?

　—El fin de semana, el sábado, Fav organiza un chat de chicas mágicas. Recibirás una notificación y la invitación en tu móvil mágico. ¡Es como una sala de chat! No es obligatorio, pero al ir puedes conseguir nuevos contactos, información y todo eso. ¡Pruébalo si estás libre!

　Explicó muchas cosas muy rápido. Top Speed, claramente, no era solo rápida con los pies, sino también con sus palabras.

　Esa era su relación hace dos meses. Desde entonces... no ha cambiado mucho.

　Esa noche, Hatoda Ako tenía un problema. Había ido directa a su trabajo a tiempo parcial cuando terminó las clases, desde allí caminó hasta la parada del autobús y finalmente llegó a casa. Pero en cuanto se encontró frente a la puerta, se dio cuenta de que había perdido la llave. Era una llave pequeña, y encontrarla llevaría un buen rato incluso de día. El sol se ocultaba más rápido en otoño, y sería difícil localizarla con tan solo la luz de la luna y las farolas. Si esperaba a que sus tíos llegaran a casa, le abrirían la puerta, pero eso no cambiaría el hecho de que había perdido la llave. Algún ladrón podría usarla, de modo que tendrían que cambiar la cerradura. Ako no quería causar ningún problema.

　Han pasado tres meses desde que su padre mató a su madre. Después de aquello, la chica se mudó a la casa de su tío, el hermano pequeño de su madre. Así, se dio cuenta de que se estaba convirtiendo en una carga. Le dejaban ir al mismo instituto al que siempre había asistido, le daban una paga y le permitían hacer lo que quisiera. Era una carga horrible. Una vez, fue a visitar a su padre, pero la echó y le dijo que no volviera nunca más. Ni siquiera su padre la necesitaba.

　Nadie hablaba con ella en el instituto. Todo el mundo sabía que su padre había apuñalado a su madre tras una discusión, y murmuraban al verla pasar. Ako no era más que una inútil; solo podía causar problemas para los demás. De este modo, llegó a la conclusión de que lo correcto sería suicidarse. Hace tiempo, su abuela paterna le dijo que era muy terca y no veía más que lo que quería ver, como su padre. Lo cierto es que Ako no creía que eso fuera algo malo. Morir sería mucho mejor que seguir siendo una carga para todos. Y así, poco a poco, había ido adquiriendo lo que necesitaba para suicidarse. Había estado cogiendo del botiquín de su tío, que sufría de insomnio, los tranquilizantes justos para que no la descubrieran, y los había estado guardando en su escritorio del instituto. Ya le faltaba poco.

　Pero ahora acababa de perder la llave. Quería morir para dejar de ser una carga, pero era incapaz de no causar problemas. Perder la llave en ese momento era un golpe duro a su moral hundida, y solo pudo agacharse débilmente ante la puerta. Para ella, la llave perdida se acababa de convertir en el símbolo de todo lo que la atormentaba. Ako solo podía pensar en la llave, y las lágrimas comenzaron a caer por su rostro.

　—¿Qué te pasa?

　Era la voz extrañamente dulce de una chica. Muy extraña... Bueno, era Ako, así que podría no ser tan extraña en realidad, pero a ella se lo parecía.

　—Si tienes algún problema, puedes contármelo. Como si, por ejemplo... hubieras perdido la llave de tu casa y no pudieras entrar, o algo por el estilo.

　Ako alzó la mirada, y junto a ella había una joven tan hermosa que su corazón palpitó con fuerza con tan solo verla. Su piel era tan blanca que destacaba en la oscuridad, como si brillara. Su rostro era tan perfecto que podría haberlo esculpido un artista. La sonrisa de la chica era un poco forzada, y el contraste del bello semblante con su incomodidad solo la hacía más adorable. Eso sí, su ropa era bastante rara. A primera vista, parecía que llevaba el uniforme de un instituto, pero era demasiado elaborado. Se parecía más a un cosplay de algún anime o manga. Su bufanda estaba bordada con volantes, y de su falda plisada colgaban adornos de flor blanca. La insignia parecía ser de algún instituto, pero, al menos, no era el de ninguno cercano. A Ako le sorprendió que también llevara la insignia en las medias... pero fijándose bien, se dio cuenta de que eran unas botas blancas. Su cabello era de un rubio platino que resplandecía a la luz de la luna, con un lazo que también estaba adornado con flores blancas. Dos palabras llegaron a la mente de Ako: chica mágica. Ako estaba estupefacta, y antes de darse cuenta, confesó que había perdido la llave. La chica asintió, le pidió que la esperara allí y desapareció. El viento comenzó a soplar y a Ako le llegó un aroma afrutado. Es real. Una chica mágica de verdad. Pasados unos cinco minutos en los que Ako apenas fue capaz de permanecer en el mismo sitio, aún perpleja, la joven reapareció, respirando con pesadez.

　—¿Es esta?

　La llave que sostenía era, sin duda, la que Ako había perdido.

　—Ten cuidado de no perderla, ¿vale?

　La chica sonrió. Como si su sonrisa la invitara a ello, Ako le dio las gracias. Físicamente no tenían nada que ver, pero su sonrisa era exactamente la misma que tenía su madre cuando aún se llevaba bien con su padre. Reconfortante, feliz, y tan solo mirarla era relajante. Era ese mismo tipo de sonrisa. Ako inclinó la cabeza, agradecida, y para cuando la volvió a levantar la chica ya no estaba. Era una chica mágica de verdad.

　Ako era más feliz que nunca. Había un sentimiento cálido en su corazón. Ya no quería morir. Las chicas mágicas existían, y una la había salvado. Ako se preguntó si ella también podría convertirse en una chica mágica. Si lo hiciera, podría volver a ser querida. Estaba extasiada de solo imaginarlo. Ako se preguntó si habría alguien en alguna parte que necesitara su ayuda.

Su bufanda estaba bordada con volantes, y de su falda plisada colgaban adornos de flor blanca. La insignia parecía ser de algún instituto, pero, al menos, no era el de ninguno cercano. A Ako le sorprendió que también llevara la insignia en las medias... pero fijándose bien, se dio cuenta de que eran unas botas blancas. Su cabello era de un rubio platino que resplandecía a la luz de la luna, con un lazo que también estaba adornado con flores blancas. Dos palabras llegaron a la mente de Ako: chica mágica. Estoy traduciendo directamente de la versión inglesa, que se puede encontrar tanto en [https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0BwUphuy8AsxEVDJfaXJrcHdMVU0 Google Drive] como en el [http://mahoikutranslationproject.tumblr.com/masterlist tumblr del equipo de traducción]. Llevan muy buen ritmo, así que no veo que vaya a alcanzarles en el futuro próximo.

Lo cierto es que esto es más un proyecto personal que otra cosa, de modo que realmente no necesito ayuda, pero actualizaré tanto esta página como la principal y el foro en caso de que esta situación cambie. Soy traductor profesional, y por tanto extremadamente exigente en lo que respecta a la calidad de mi trabajo. Que este proyecto sea un hobby en lugar de un encargo no implica que no vaya a buscar la naturalidad y la corrección absoluta del texto, llegando incluso a consultar la novela original en caso de duda, y le pediría el mismo nivel de dedicación a cualquier posible colaborador.

Perder la llave en ese momento era un golpe duro a su moral hundida, y solo pudo agacharse débilmente ante la puerta. Para ella, la llave perdida se acababa de convertir en el símbolo de todo lo que la atormentaba. Ako solo podía pensar en la llave, y las lágrimas comenzaron a caer por su rostro.

　Era la voz extrañamente dulce de una chica. Muy extraña... Bueno, era Ako, así que podría no ser tan extraña en realidad, pero a ella se lo parecía.

　—Si tienes algún problema, puedes contármelo. Como si, por ejemplo... hubieras perdido la llave de tu casa y no pudieras entrar, o algo por el estilo.

　Ako alzó la mirada, y junto a ella había una joven tan hermosa que su corazón palpitó con fuerza con tan solo verla. Su piel era tan blanca que destacaba en la oscuridad, como si brillara. Su rostro era tan perfecto que podría haberlo esculpido un artista. La sonrisa de la chica era un poco forzada, y el contraste del bello semblante con su incomodidad solo la hacía más adorable. Eso sí, su ropa era bastante rara. A primera vista, parecía que llevaba el uniforme de un instituto, pero era demasiado elaborado. Se parecía más a un cosplay de algún anime o manga. Su bufanda estaba bordada con volantes, y de su falda plisada colgaban adornos de flor blanca. La insignia parecía ser de algún instituto, pero, al menos, no era el de ninguno cercano. A Ako le sorprendió que también llevara la insignia en las medias... pero fijándose bien, se dio cuenta de que eran unas botas blancas. Su cabello era de un rubio platino que resplandecía a la luz de la luna, con un lazo que también estaba adornado con flores blancas. Dos palabras llegaron a la mente de Ako: chica mágica. Ako estaba estupefacta, y antes de darse cuenta, confesó que había perdido la llave. La chica asintió, le pidió que la esperara allí y desapareció. El viento comenzó a soplar y a Ako le llegó un aroma afrutado. Es real. Una chica mágica de verdad. Pasados unos cinco minutos en los que Ako apenas fue capaz de permanecer en el mismo sitio, aún perpleja, la joven reapareció, respirando con pesadez.

　—¿Es esta?

　La llave que sostenía era, sin duda, la que Ako había perdido.

　—Ten cuidado de no perderla, ¿vale?

　La chica sonrió. Como si su sonrisa la invitara a ello, Ako le dio las gracias. Físicamente no tenían nada que ver, pero su sonrisa era exactamente la misma que tenía su madre cuando aún se llevaba bien con su padre. Reconfortante, feliz, y tan solo mirarla era relajante. Era ese mismo tipo de sonrisa. Ako inclinó la cabeza, agradecida, y para cuando la volvió a levantar la chica ya no estaba. Era una chica mágica de verdad.

　Ako era más feliz que nunca. Había un sentimiento cálido en su corazón. Ya no quería morir. Las chicas mágicas existían, y una la había salvado. My name is Muhamad from Malaysia. I'm currently studying undergraduate in United Kingdom.
During my spare time, I used to read Light Novels (LN) from Baka-Tsuki (BT) and my Japanese friend, who is in the same universities. I do enjoy reading both original and English-translated LN.

Then, he said to me: 'Why not translating them into your Own Language (Malay)?" And here I am, quite to afraid to suggest it beforehand.

Therefore, I would like to request your permission, and your approval to add another language-translated LN, that is Malay.

I know this is something new, but I would like to try it by means of translating it to my native language.
If possible, I would like to found this new project, so that people from my country and those who can read Malay appreciate more stories in LN by means of Malay language.

Some don't list subtitles in japanese, or some extra list the page count, other have totally different formats of date. The way the brackets or dashes are put are different from project to project. While I'd say format unification is a generally a good thing, I don't think it's an urgent item. To implement this as a rule/guideline, it should probably be raised for discussion in the forums. And then after discussion (aka the thread sits there for a week or two without anyone posting), it could be accepted as a new rule/guideline. I did the same for DanMachi, StB, Mahouka, and Durarara!!. Tate and Seraph aren't locked as of now, so I left those as is. Index was already editable through Template:Toaru:Series_Overview. For the projects not in abandoned on the sidebar, they will be moved out of the project categories and into the sidebar once all the translations on the pages are deleted, which should be no later than 2 months before the first English publication. In Tate's case I don't think there's yet a consensus on what to do, so I can't say what will happen. Excuse me, I think there is some uploading mistakes with the light novel "Clockwork Planet". I have been an avid follower of this light novel translation and you should be aware that what has been recently uploaded is not clockwork planet. First off the translator of this light novel has not uploaded translations for volume 3 yet on his website http://hellping.org/. However, the recent translations are supposedly from the third volume. Second, the style is completely different from the "Clockwork Planet" novel (even when accounting for a different translator). The supposed chapters are much to short for "Clockwork Planet" and after the first chapter none of the main characters are even mentioned. I am glad that you are adding "Clockwork Planet". That said, I believe everyone wants the correct version up. Again, you can find the translated version of "Clockwork Planet at http://hellping.org/. There should be two complete volumes there. I hope this helps.

== Permission to view web novel postings on Forum, Major concerns. ==

My name is john34404 on both parts of the site and I want access to the web novels section on the forums. This is due to me adding evil god average, xin Ni (still not sure if its a web novel or light novel), and Dragon life to the listings.

With the new rulings on Web Novels I will need to ask additional permissions from not only the translators, but also to the baka-staff. This is due to the current translation projects currently being done usually will be dropped (Whole sites even) if the site receives no hits for the project.

I understand that it would be more convenient for baka-tsuki to host the projects, especially for the app, but a small revision to where currently translating projects have a wait/separation time until the text version is needed for the site would be better for baka-tsuki due to the willingness of access from translators.

It will be a lot easier getting permission for completed sections (or whole works) than it would be for the most current text of a currently translating work.

If the translators get no gain/feedback from this site they will just not give this site permissions to works and this site will likely become very small or unused. *Yes, you can add links as long as your site doesn't break any of rules for externals ([[Baka-Tsuki:External_Contributor_Rules#General_Rules|link]]); for example, as long as the site isn't engaged in commercial activity (take "donations" for the translation), and doesn't host Italian projects for novel series that are licensed/released by an Italian publisher. When making the page, just follow the general format of other projects. I've done a little research and I've noted that he hasn't responded to requests on his talk page on if the PapaKiki project has been abandoned or not. I understand being a head of Baka Tsuki is a big time commitment, so I can understand how this could have happened.

There are contributors who wish to translate but would like some guidance/assistance on how to go about their roles. There are some who don't want to step on any toes and don't wish to start translating until receiving the OK.

I request to oversee this project until Onizuka-gto returns or I am considered a valid permanent project manager.

I apologize for sending my request through wrong channel.
But please hear me out.

It came to my knowledge that yen press has licensed the Psycome series due to which it has been taken down from baka-tsuki.

I am a really big fan of Psycho Love Comedy series and have read all the three volumes and was waiting a long time to read volume 4 which you took almost a year to update on the app and site and was really eager to read it when i got time i even downloaded it and saved it so i could read it with peace and savoir all the contents.
But i lost that phone and the data and now when i got time and wanted to read the 4th volume, it had already been taken down and i searched a lot on net before writing to you, but i was unable to find any backup or copy of that volume in any format.

For the first time i felt a strong despair and a strong hate towards Yen Press as i lost all means to get to read my favorite series.

Even in my job interview i told them that i read books and light novel and this is the one i am fond of and also told them the review and summary of the series enthusiastically.

And yen press will be releasing the series in Feb/March of 2016, which is a long time.

As my last hope i thought of asking you if by any chance you could provide me with pdf, epub or even html version of the forth volume.
So i could finally continue on with the series. I already know full well that your hands are tied too. But please consider my request.
And i promise i won't distribute it to anyone or post it on any site or even share it with any of my friends or peers(not that they have any interest in light novels).

*Yes, you should translate the wiki project page to German and post that [[Mushoku Tensei (German)|link]] above (where you currently posted the prologue), and then move the prologue to a page named like [[Mushoku Tensei (German):Volume 01 Prologue]] (you could translate "Volume" and "Prologue", or just leave them as English in the page name). An archive/mirror would have been a lot more important when we weren't sure if we would be able to stay online because of server host issues; that was at the beginning of the year, which may be part of the reason you received requests. We've since resolved those issues and will stay up, so I don't think it's as relevant anymore. == Baka-Tsuki android app problem. ==

Hey there, your app Baka-Tsuki Ex is giving problem when attempted to read any of the novels. The error says Bitmap empty and then gives another error which is pretty long.

This error is happening with other people as well because in the app store people have written that they too get the same error. I have tried redownloading the app but it didn't work, I tried deleting and downloading the novel cache but it doesn't do anything so I wanted to report this to you people. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Llevan muy buen ritmo, así que no veo que vaya a alcanzarles en el futuro próximo.

Lo cierto es que esto es más un proyecto personal que otra cosa, de modo que realmente no necesito ayuda, pero actualizaré tanto esta página como la principal y el foro en caso de que esta situación cambie. Soy traductor profesional, y por tanto extremadamente exigente en lo que respecta a la calidad de mi trabajo. Que este proyecto sea un hobby en lugar de un encargo no implica que no vaya a buscar la naturalidad y la corrección absoluta del texto, llegando incluso a consultar la novela original en caso de duda, y le pediría el mismo nivel de dedicación a cualquier posible colaborador.

* Contactar primero con el gestor del proyecto para comprobar qué nos falta en cada momento.
* Nivel de inglés B2 o superior.
* Nivel de español de España nativo.
* Nivel de japonés A1 o superior (o por lo menos nociones básicas y recursos).
* Perfección ortotipográfica y gramatical (el corrector de Word ayuda, aunque parezca una tontería).
* Disposición a revisar el trabajo de otro traductor y de que su trabajo sea revisado.
* No abandonar el proyecto sin decir palabra. Si te arrepientes o te surge algo, avisa. No te juzgo.

Lo siento si parezco un imbécil arrogante, pero quiero hacer lo posible por asegurar la calidad de la obra.
