As the sound of shouting receded, standing there was a young man with a lean face——no, calling it juvenile would be more appropriate.

His name is Orba.

Born in a certain nameless village. But several months prior, he was still just a famous gladiator, being a slave and risking his life in a fight to entertain the guests.

Even so, being called ‘Gil’; another person name, he turned his head around. Located at the Solon Palace in the imperial capital of Mephius.

Originally, with Orba’s status let alone treading foot into this place, even approaching the gate is impossible.

Gil Mephius——the only son of Emperor Guhl of Mephius, the crown prince next in line of the throne. Orba though a slave, but due to a twist of fate, he possessed the same identical look as the crown prince. But several months before, under the command of a noble, he became a substitute for Prince Gil to live in the palace.

On the surface a standin for the prince, but in reality, he was secretly concocting a plan to usurp all the power from the nobles. Besides, Orba had his own thoughts, but was set aside for the time being.

On the other hand, a person with flickering golden hair came running over, calling Orba with the name ‘Gil Mephius’, is a girl named Vileena Owell. Fourteen of age. She came from the neighbouring country Garbera to Mephius some months ago. To become the crown prince Gil’s wife.

Mephius had been in war with Gabera for tens of years. Owing to their mutual feeling of loathing the war, a truce and an alliance was formed as a consequence, by the marriage of these two young people.

But today——after having breakfast in his respective seat.

After giving his regards to the royal family who attended the engagement party, hastily fled to the palace’s corridor.

After all, the current schedule was tight. Two weeks later, he needed to led an army out of the capital, and quickly reache Apta Fortress at the west of Mephius. To suppress the uprising force in the west——Ackles Bazgan. Arranging of the force, preparing the equipments, preparing for battle——the works kept piling up like a mountain.

His mind thinking various sort of things, having only walked into the corridor, Princess Vileena followed suit.

Could it be I had done something lacking courtesy, Orba secretly grumbled in his mind. Looking back, until several months ago, he was just a mere slave. Unaccustomed to the royal family’s etiquettes, and practices. Quietly endured in his heart, as he prepared to receive the scolding of the fourteen year old girl. In other words, this is how their relationship is.

“About her royal highness Flora, did you hear about it?”

“Flora?”

Hearing this unexpected name, Orba crooked his head.

Flora is the late queen’s daughter, a sister who has no blood relationships with Gil whatsoever. Her age, from his memory it should be eleven, or twelve years old. An introvert person, aside from the social niceties, Orba himself haven’t seen her speak even once. She should also be present at the meal a moment ago, but when he racked his brain he couldn’t recall it no matter what, she gave people the impression of a frail girl.

Inquiring about Flora, this princess of a neighboring country is becoming more and more hard to understand.

“Prior to the country’s founding, as a congratulatory gift, his nation received a Schiapa kitten Those who were close with her highness Flora seeing that she wanted this, setting their minds, they stealthily sent people out to make various preparations. In short her highness Flora was appeased.

“Cat.”

Speaking of Solon, this is a rarely seen creature, moreover a Schiapa cat, he had heard that it is of the western side of the continent’s breed, raising it requires a lot of manpower.

“Just for a while, setting it to play in the Princess Flora’s courtyard, having lost attention of it for a split second, it had fled.”

“Oh.”

“Due to losing it, Princess Flora who was once cheerful became an introvert person. Your highness must have seen it a moment ago. She barely ate any food. If this goes on, she will collapse one of these days.”

It seems like she didn’t come to lecture him, hearing Orba this just one sentence, however,

“This is your sister. What do you mean by ‘I see’!”

Vileena narrowed the corner of her eyes.

Orba realized that, this he had done wrong. This princess, is totally unlike her cute and petite appearance, in case she recognized someone as the [enemy], she would relentlessly press on the matter. This also applied to if he were to use a sword or gun.

Orba could not help but feel that, he had fallen into the enemy’s trap.

“I am sure lots of people have been sent to search for it in the palace already, it would be found sooner or later, please rest assured princess.”

“I am not talking about this. I having recently arrived from another country, have no right to say in your internal affairs, but that person——her highness Flora appears to be lonely.)

Vileena withdraw her attack temporarily, trying to convey something through her eyes.

This problem doesn’t just involve the cat, Orba felt so. Like Vileena, being in his country recently, until not a long time ago, Mephius and the princess’ country were old nemesis, being through countless blood bath and slaughter.

Vileena felt her loneliness overlapped with Flora’s circumstance. Therefore she wished he, who is her elder brother to comfort her, wanting to be able to care about Flora.

But,

(Though the relationship between Gil and Ineri Mephius is good, according to the chamberlain, almost nobody saw him have a conversation with Flora.)

The relationships between Gil and those close to him, this Orba had been told beforehand. That is to say, to not let the others suspect——to not let them know Gil had been swapped with a sword slave——this is required.

Originally viewed by others as [the idiot]; that is Prince Gil, due to the recent heroic deeds, he had received admiration from everyone, but because the change was too abrupt, he was met with a lot of skepticism.

In the afternoon of the same day, the sun had set about an hour ago, Orba walked out of his room at the center of the palace.

Coincidentally, his right hand was still wrapped in bandages, that is due to the war not long ago, he suffered damage to his collarbone cracking it open.

Vileena’s worries were irrelevant, Orba originally hold a not so good impression of the aristocrats. Ignoring the good impression part, up until now, somewhere in the depth of his heart he got the urge to behead those Mephius nobles with his own sword out of deep hatred.

Orba’s family, and those he knows in his home village, all were snatched away by the Mephian army. There is only sole reason for him to continue endure this harsh life as the prince’s substitute, that is to take hold of the power and enact his revenge.

(The kitten missing? Don’t feel like eating anything, so you want me to find a solution for it?)

This is pure nonsense. If you don’t want to eat then don’t eat. Sooner or later you will get hungry, when the time comes would she spare time for the kitten.

“Oh, your highness, you seem to be in a bad mood.”

His close bodyguard Shique laughed.

Despite Shique lean appearance, he was originally a gladiator, his hand strength was considerably strong.

“Hahaha, your highness is acting all shy.”

“You, please give me a break——.”

“Look, here we go again.” Shique’s face suddenly drew in closer, and whispered near his ear in a low voice. “You frequently let out your true nature. You need to keep calm on the battlefield, you are normally not good at controlling your emotions. It’s pretty severe when the situation involved you meeting the princess. You need to keep your nerves down, Orba. If not, it wouldn’t be surprising for you to get chopped down at the head from the back. After all, compared to the coliseum the place is more dangerous.”

Orba suddenly went silent.

Afterwards, using force to shake off Shique’s hand.

“Anyways, if you want to relax, you can come to my room anytime. I will hear you out.”

“That’s like jumping into a dragon’s lair.”

“You dare say that. But compared to these, oh, they have arrived.”

Shique pointed to the front——there at the corner of the training ground, is the resting place with roof attached, a couple of human’s shadows could be spotted.

If I got a dollar every time someone asked me this, I would be able to do this for a living. Double 7 is in Dengeki Bunko or whatever that magazine is. So far, the first 2 segments (I guess chapters 0-6) have been released, and it is 2nd year as you say. It's an unedited portion and "spoiler free," so it's more akin to the web novels. Awesome job Dreyakis, its getting exciting with each chapter release. however, in my personal opinion, i'm not that hyped about the story spanning over two volumes. In the previous arcs i felt the transition to the next volume didn't go over so well, hell i'm still lamenting about the enrollment arc. that being said the author did improve with the nine-schools arc. maybe the author will surprise us this time. great story anyways. share your thoughts. I had the feeling that he took his time with this chapter. But that is kinda good, because sometimes i get the bad feeling that he works to much for us and even then he is still so fast that you can by no means complain (still one of the fastest translators I seen till now) (not that we have a right to complain anyway).

Indeed. It's difficult not to appreciate just how fast and capable both Drey and zzhk are. Even given a masterful command of both English and Chinese, there's a lot of cross-referencing that has to happen when you're not translating straight from the Japanese text. The fact that they're both efficient ''and'' consistent is just staggering. <br />

I think you should add Js06 to the list of one man army translators as well. Sure, he takes longer when translating other LNs, but when a new To Aru Majutsu no Index volume comes out, he can finish the LN in about a week or so with daily updates. I am unsure whether I understand the last sentence but if you mean that I should upload the book unto my computer and use a program to do the bulk of the translation, aside from the fact that I believe uploading copyrighted material is illegal, I do not have the technological capacity to do that, so I'm afraid that my process will remain read phrase, doublecheck words I'm unsure of, translate into english and then type my rough translation(and it is rough, the complexity of the task really eats away at my punctuation skills and for speed's sake I often can't spend the time to get a sentence just right, so if you want to help please edit). The process is slow but, with practice I will get faster. -Sashiko

Don't worry too much about punctuation. We can cover that for you based on the context of the text, as long as we can tell where the sentences start and end. I try to avoid changing the actual words as much as possible. You should also ignore the person telling you to have the browser translate it -- pretty sure BT staff does not like that just off the legal issues alone. Good job with chapter 3 of Presidential election and the queen. I didn't expect that development, but I like where it's heading. And I agree with the way you do it, not using computer-aided translation. It certainly is a bit slower, but results are something nobody using software assist - even those professional programs out there - can match. I'm working from the Chinese translations of the light novels. The web novels were published before the light novels, but the light novels contain more content in terms of character development and extra scenes. In addition, some lines in the web novels were toned down in the light novels. (And there's more fanservice in the light novels.)

Uh, probably some far distant time in the future. (read: never) The Afterwords and the Late Great Favorite bear no impact on the story itself. They are merely the author's thoughts as each novel comes to a close. Hence why their priority is very, very low.

Simply put, because someone signed up to do Chapter 8 before I did. Translators work at different speeds, so some chapters may come out ahead of the others. Everyone works at their own pace, so give them some time.

If I got a dollar every time someone asked me this, I would be able to do this for a living. Click on the User Page tab on the top left corner and you will find my progression on the latest chapter as well as a ''rough'' estimate on when the chapter will be complete. And, no, it has been scientifically proven that asking me to work faster/harder does not improve translation speed.

Until otherwise stated, yes. Volume 5 may get delayed though, since it is a collection of side stories rather than advancing the main plot. We'll see what happens after the Nine Schools Competition.

If you are interested in joining the project, drop by the Feedback Thread to let larenthian and Seitsuki know. You will have to hunt down your own copy of the RAWs, I'm afraid.

I just want to let you know, Dreyakis, I highly enjoy your translation. I've spent quite a bit of time as an editor for various fan translation groups (never for light novels though) and even those projects could cause a man's brain to explode. Translation is hard work and you are doing the best job I have seen on Baka-Tsuki. It is a pleasure to read your translated text, doubly so because the novels themselves are excellent. The novels have an addictive neutrality to them, and I am very happy that you are translating them for an entirely new section of the world to enjoy. ~BakaGrappler

First time commenting on bakaupdates, so not sure if this is the correct way, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for your work! I absolutely love this series. I've reread it 5x now eagerly waiting for my next hit of ecstasy! I actually created a log in just to voice my utmost gratitude to you and all the hard workers that work on the Mahouka series! I truly hope this series becomes an anime, but at the same time I know it'll never be as glorious as the LN! You work so quickly and your translations are top notch! Hello I am new to Baka-Tsuki and I have a couple questions that you can help me with. (Sorry if this is in the wrong place to put it, but I am new and I don't know anywhere else to put it.)

I want to help with translating novels on this wiki, but at the registration page of a project it just shows the chapters and the translators who translated it and I can't find anything that could help me. And if I do register to translate a chapter where can I find or get a raw version of the chapter to translate or do they provide you with one. Currently now I am in my third year of Japanese at a highschool standard and I am wondering if this enough to actually start translating chapters. I can understand Japanese sentence structure/grammar, hiragana, katakana like only 20 kanjis. Thank you in advance for answering. :) - TheWierdSaying

Larenthian is the project leader for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, so I don't have the final say on who does what. (Larenthian is on vacation until next year, but may poke in from time to time.) If you are interested in joining the project, go ahead and check in on the Feedback thread that is linked on the main Mahouka page. The Registration link is only to let the translators know who is doing what. Unfortunately, you will have to hunt down a copy of the RAWs yourself, as we don't have a handy supply cache anywhere (not that I know of). Dreyakis, out of curiosity, how do you manage to crank through these translations so quickly? I'm curious how you get so much done so quickly; never mind the quality which I have absolutely no complaints about. Generally speaking, my productivity is around 10 pages per day since I'm translating Chinese to English, with appropriate increases in output on my days off (Wednesdays and Saturdays). It's not hard to make an estimate after that. I'm out in California, so the time stamp on B-T is two hours ahead of local time.
