==Story Synopsis==

Takasu Ryuuji begins his second year of high school trying to look his best. However, there is one thing that torments him: despite his gentle personality he has inherited his gangster father's intimidating eyes, which often leads to misunderstandings by his classmates. But all that is about to change, on the first day of the new school term he accidentally bumps into the most dangerous being in school - Aisaka Taiga, also known as the Palmtop Tiger. Despite her diminutive appearance, Taiga has a very negative attitude and has left a "bloody trail" wherever she goes, hence her nickname.

After his unfortunate encounter with Taiga, Ryuuji does his best to avoid her. Yet by chance he discovers that Taiga has a crush on his best friend Kitamura Yuusaku, while Taiga finds out about his crush on her best friend Kushieda Minori. And so Taiga decides to let Ryuuji help her hook up with Kitamura as her "personal servant", and in return, Taiga will help Ryuuji get closer to Minori.

Due to Ryuuji's obsession with cleanliness and the close proximity of Taiga's apartment block, besides sleeping, Taiga ends up spending most of her time at Ryuuji's place. Over time, Ryuuji witnesses a side of Taiga that people normally don't see, and their relationship becomes so close that rumours begin to spread about whether they are going out as a couple.

Thus begins the clash between the Tiger and the Dragon - Toradora!

The purpose of this page is to lay down the guidelines by which the editors and translators will fulfil their respective roles for this project. Guidelines are required to create a consistent reading format thoughout all the novels, to ensure the best Spice and Wolf experience for readers.

Hello. I left Ryuuji's own thoughts unquoted and unitalicized for a reason - please see the translation notes.

The novel isn't written from an objective point of view. While the narration is commonly in 3rd person, it synchronizes with Ryuuji's own thoughts and feelings. Adding a distinct marker is going to ruin the feel of the original language. That's pretty much how I feel. I am considering undoing all of what you did concerning that.

Second, the use of italics for the other stuff is meant to signify thoughts involved in actions or stuff in the background that aren't being clearly paid attention to by the narrator.

Third, the dashes are there to prevent overuse of commas, because frankly, it gets confusing.

Fourth, please don't fiddle around with changing Tiger to lowercase or "the Tiger". It's only going to be getting messy, because just about the only people who call her by Taiga instead of Tiger are Ryuuji and Minori.

That's the way how I approached this project.

I really don't really agree with Kinny Riddle's approach honestly.

It's only going to result in a mess if italics or quotations marks are haphazardly added at this point (like any instance where Ryuuji "thinks" about "Minori"; what he calls her when he really is thinking, is Kushieda), so I'll handle it myself then.

I have no idea which of you decided to add approximately 7,000 ellipsis to some of these chapters (Specifically Novel 7, Ch 3 which is a joke right now), but please go back and retake some English classes. Take a novel, open it up and actually look at how conversations are edited. Even in conversations with multiple omissions and interruptions there certainly aren't '...' ''on every other sentence''.

I appreciate the response; and yeah it does work even though I'm not registered. If that happens to be the case with Hamster, I won't bother doing massive re-edits, but I agree with you. For anime it's not quite as big a deal leaving things literally translated, since there simply isn't as much text (even though this creates some silly moments for an English speaking audience). For a novel though, the entire point should be to maximize flow and readability.

I appreciate the work people do here, which is the only reason why I bring it up, since it sticks out quite a bit.

(I'm not sure if this will work since you aren't registered, so I'm putting it on my talk page as well.)

The last time I tried to make format changes, I got chewed out by Hamster (vol 7 translator), so I'm not even going to bother with it anymore. There are two possible reasons why he chose to add so many ellipses: 1) He really likes them or 2) That's where they are placed in the original novel. I can't verify 1 but as for 2, the translators here seem to like sticking to literal translations, which I don't really agree with. As a result, you will see ellipses of various sizes in places that don't make grammatical sense in English in the translated text. I don't have the time to go back and compare everything with the original so I'm just leaving things as they are. If you feel that removing ellipses is necessary, by all means go right on ahead. All I will be doing for Hamster's translations is quick grammatical edits, since I feel like arguing about trivial shit anymore.

I know what you mean about making novels more "readable". If I had free reign here, I would probably rewrite half of the texts because honestly, it would probably be faster in a lot of cases than to try and decipher some of the literal translations. I used to be pretty liberal with my edits but I don't think the people here like that, since it makes it harder to find certain points of a chapter to do translation checks and such, so I trying to loosen up in a sense. The overuse of ellipses bother me (a lot) as well but since Toradora isn't really a proper novel, I figure it's okay to leave them be, as long as they're present in the original Japanese text.

I understand the reason why you chose to leave thoughts unitalicized, but the reason why I chose to insert them was because 1) the unofficial guideline for thoughts is to italicize them [http://www.baka-tsuki.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=2357], and 2) the other volumes currently italicize thoughts, so I added them for the sake of continuity.

In the Japanese text, there is somewhat of a distinction between thoughts and narration, but that distinction is blurred in the English text, making it difficult to read (in my opinion). There were many times where the POV switched back and forth without notice, making for confusing reading. Providing a clear distinction between thoughts and narration might be beneficial to the readers, even if the original text didn't do so.

I also understand what you mean about the dashes. Personally, I was taught that punctuation like dashes, colons, semicolons, etc. should be used sparingly. What I did was leave as many in as I felt were necessary, or in some way contributed to the current situation - dramatic pauses for instance.

Regarding the "Tiger" issue, again, I only did that for the sake of continuity. If that bothers you, then I will leave those alone.

As for your RPG joke, ごめんなさい. Not a big RPG fan...

If you feel that I was wrong to make those changes, feel free to revert them. However, you might want to ask for the opinions of the folks over in the forums if you intend to change the italicized quotes. That being said, I just want to say thanks for translating this volume. I've been waiting for it for a while.

III. In exchange for the negative effect it brings upon the people around it, it may show mysterious charm and function.

IV. At the end of receiving all the negative thoughts and curses from humans, it will obtain human qualities.

===Prologue===

A black cube.

It was the only way to describe it when you looked at it. One side of its surface was about 1 meter long, and there was no hint as to the use of the object.

Yachi Haruaki stared at it with a obvious look of disbelief on his face.

"Excuse me, sir, could I have your signature?"

"Oh, yes, sure."

Haruaki checked the receipt. It was written in English since it was sent from abroad, but the name written for the sender was just as he expected.

''Another one of THOSE, you stupid old man?!'' Haruaki groaned silently to himself.

"Thank you sir! Phew, I've had a hard time carrying this. It was so heavy! Well, may I ask what thing this is, sir?"

"Er, you see, my father loves to collect antique objects, so he sends objects he's bought while abroad every once in a while... Hmmm... I also wonder what this is!"

Haruaki tried to evade the question. It was no lie though. It was just that he wasn't sure how weird this particular object that his father had sent to him this time was. Of course, he didn't bother explaining that to the delivery man.

After the delivery man had driven away, Haruaki looked down again at the strange box laying in front of his gate.

"What is this, really? Well, it was my old man who sent it so it's got to be something troublesome for sure."

The important question was to what degree will it be troubling? Haruaki cautiously touched the cube, feeling the cold sensation of the steel. It had no lid, so he supposed that it was a boxed-shaped "something", rather than a box to put "something" in. He examined the surface closely and noticed that there were numerous lines and curves that hinted a joint seam.

"Is it some kind of puzzle box? Maybe it has to undergo a certain process to activate or something...? Hmmmm, maybe I'm just thinking too much. I suppose these kind of things are the ones that don't have a specific use, now that I think about it. I've made up my mind! It's nothing important, I'm sure. My peaceful life will go on just as it was...!"

Haruaki told himself this as he played with the seams. He thought he heard a surprised wail. He stopped moving and closed his eyes. After he calmed down, he told himself,

"...That was an auditory hallucination."

While he was trying to convince himself, the cube let out a sound of grazing steel, and a part of its surface moved. Haruaki peeked at the space visible from the part of the cube that looked like a popped-out CD tray. He saw metal parts with different shapes that looked like cogs were entangled inside. He tried to trace it with his finger but all did it was move. Nothing had happened except for the low moan that he thought he heard.

"Oh, another auditory hallucination! That's it, uh-huh. Well, it's none of my business anyway! Since it has nothing to do with me, the best thing to do is to leave it alone!"

He avoided further inquiry for the moment. But still, it wouldn't do any good if he left the cube at the front of his gate so he brought it to the room where other objects that his father sent was being stored.

"Oh...God...! It's so damn heavy!"

He started to walk toward the main building of his house. On his way, he thought heard a dissatisfied snort but of course, he decided it was another one of those auditory hallucinations.

Haruaki woke up inside his 6-tatami Japanese room. He hurriedly checked the clock and saw that it was already past 7:00 PM. It was already dark outside the window. He only planned to take a nap after carrying the black cube to the storage room but ended up sleeping until now. Maybe it was because he wasn't able to sleep well last night.

''Oh hell, my stomach's already complaining in hunger but I still haven't made anything to eat...''

He did have a housemate living in a separate building, but he was basically alone, so it was unlikely that he'd find a cooked meal. Beside, the package that his father sent came right after he came home from school, so he hadn't had chance to prepare something to eat. Haruaki got out of the bed and was thinking about the chores he was going to do when he heard faint sounds.
Sound of someone's footsteps, sound of someone scavenging inside the cabinet, and finally, an unknown crunching sound.

''Could it be... Konoha?''

Haruaki looked out the window and checked the second floor of the other building. There were two windows and one of them had lights on. That meant that his housemate was there.

His whole body tensed. This traditional Japanese house was old and wide. It was an excellent prey for burglars. Haruaki opened the sliding door and walked silently down the hallway. The sound came from the kitchen. He held his breath and silently walked towards the kitchen, feeling like a burglar himself.

The moonlight illuminated a small figure crouching in front of the cabinet. It also reflected long silver hair. Observing from the figure's shadow, Haruaki decided that it was a female. Her hand was stretching alternately from her mouth and to the plastic bag she was holding. The unknown crunching sound was coming from there. His calm observation ended when he realized the amazing view in front of him. Without a thought, he shouted at the female figure, pointing his finger at her,

"A naked rice cracker thief?!"

"Huh?"

The girl stared back at Haruaki. She had long silver hair and fair white skin, slender body and beautiful face. It was shrouded with grace and strong will, contradicting qualities playing in her expression like trick art. A fragment of rice-cracker in her mouth fell as she too, pointed her finger towards Haruaki and shouted,

"Wha..?! Hey! You're that impudent man from earlier!"

The girl looked down at her body and a shade of red spread across her face.

"Don't tell me you're planning to play with my body again?! What a shameless man!"

She knelt down and started to throw every object that was within her grasp: a tray, a wooden plate, a teapot, etc. She did it with great control. Haruaki slipped on the object that he had accidentally stepped on while trying to parry the flying projectiles. Objects started to pile above him.

"Ouch! H-hold on for a second! Ow! If you come near me, I'll..."

The girl crossed her arms in front of her conservative breasts, her hands still holding the round-shaped rice crackers. Haruaki lost his voice as he froze up seeing the unpredictable expression on her face. The girl tensed up for a moment and shouted at him,

"...I, I'll put a curse on you!"

Haruaki understood from the words she'd said that SHE was the box that he received this afternoon. Tension left his shoulders and he dropped them as he thought,

''I knew it. That stupid old man... He did it again.''

''He sent another Cursed Tool again!''

Personally, I think it's a good idea to keep the translations from beginning picture pages. Kinny nor the other TLs chose not to do it, but leaving it in couldn't have a detrimental effect on the volume as a whole. Plus, removing that means all of the TL's effort was for naught for a part that is actually quite interesting. I've separated it as a prologue to keep a clear distinction from the rest of the chapter.

Is that supposed to be 殺す, so it would be something like "I'll kill you, you stupid dog", or am I missing something? I left a (!) at the part to make it easier to find. I can't find (though I didn't try very hard) the part in the original text to check it.

Also, a note to the TL. There is a grammar mistake that is consistent throughout the text. An example is "Though the reason remained unknown, but Kitamura had really become a delinquent." When using this type of a sentence, the "but" shouldn't be there, making it "Though the reason remained unknown, Kitamura had really become a delinquent". Something you might want to think about, but good job on the rest though. Vocabulary in particular is much stronger than the other translations.

It's pretty close I would say, assuming 指圧 (shiatsu) refers to the pressure which she jabbed Ryuuji in the side with. I certainly don't think she's referring to the massage. Maybe replace "The thumb" with "This jab"?

Also, why is キャベツ translated as "Korean lettuce" rather than just cabbage?

Since Taiga didn't use a needle, it really should be [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acupressure acupressure]. The technique is almost the same, but uses presure of the fingers, rather than needles.

This chapter is so weird. At times, there are hardly any edits (minor formatting stuff) but then there are sections where it's been machine gunned. I redid the sentences about 3/4 of the way through where it changes from third-person to first-person, but someone's going to need to retranslate starting from the last break. I don't think (nor do I want to) it's possible to edit that while retaining translational accuracy. Good luck.

After looking through the editing guidelines, I guess I made a couple of "major" changes without consulting the translator first. This is my first time editing so please forgive me. This sentence is kind of oddly worded:
"All we want is just to look at Ami-chan in this appearance, right!?"

Would it be okay if I changed it to:
"All we want is just to look at Ami-chan when she's like this, right!?"

Also, do you plan on using "----!" or "!!!"? I think(?) they represent the same thing and was curious for the sake of continuity.

Hi guys, quick question here - could "mini-coma" possibly be referring to a "concussion", which seems to be what the original author was actually describing?

I was curious about that as well. I don't think it's a concussion per se, but the original kanji, 半失神, means something like half conscious, so maybe "semi-conscious" or "dazed" would be a better word than semi-coma. This is definitely up to Kinny though, as my Japanese isn't that great. ^^

That is a very confusing part, but I think it's supposed to be Ryuuji and Minori because the dialogue before was between them. In the original Japanese text, the dialogue ends with なんちゃって, which is like "just kidding". Plus Taiga and Minori already have a very close relationship so it would be kind of sad if they had just gotten to the point being able to joke around. As for the second thing, you are correct. It's the end of their first semester. I'll go ahead and make the changes. Change it back if it's incorrect.
