==Tense==

The guidelines currently state present tense is to be used, which is really odd. In english, using present tense for a narrative invokes a particular style that is not really meant for novels. In Japanese they can get away with it because that literary form is nothing special, but in English you'd be hard-pressed to find any (non-children) novel off the shelves that isn't written in the past tense. I'm aware there's a good chunk of work already edited into present tense, but that doesn't change the fact that it reads really strangely. I'd prefer to keep discussion here but inevitably people never read this so the forum topic is [http://www.baka-tsuki.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=2303 here].

== History ==
''Kara no Kyoukai'' ("空の境界") is a series of stories written by Kinoko Nasu (奈須きのこ) with illustrations by Takeshi Takeuchi (武内崇).

The first five chapters were posted online on Nasu and Takeuchi's dojin website "Takebouki (竹箒)" starting Oct 1998, and the last two chapters being released at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comiket Comiket] 56 in 1999. In 2001, part of the story was included in "[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukihime_PLUS-DISK Tsukihime PLUS-DISK (月姫PLUS-DISC)]," created by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TYPE-MOON TYPE-MOON], the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doujin doujin] circle Nasu and Takeuchi joined. The story gained huge popularity, and the doujinshi edition of the stories saw release on December 30, 2001 at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comiket Comiket] 61.

A number of translators working on this project are new and thus work slower and require more help than the more seasoned veterans we have in other projects. Thus, many of the chapters are currently set up such that all translation and discussion is done side by side on the discussion pages, as opposed to the chapters themselves. == Story Synopsis ==
Spice and Wolf's story revolves around Lawrence Craft, a twenty-five-year-old merchant. His main goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop, and he already has been traveling for seven years while gaining experience in the trade. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds a centuries-old pagan wolf-deity girl named Horo sleeping in his cart. She appears to be a fifteen-year-old girl, except she possesses a wolf’s tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town’s harvest goddess, who has kept the area blessed with good wheat crops for many years. Despite having the responsibility to watch over the town, she wishes to go back to her homeland in the north called Yoitsu, since she believes that the locals have forsaken their past agreement and therefore she is no longer bound to their land. She makes a deal with Lawrence to take her with him in exchange for her wisdom and supernatural abilities, but as they travel, her true nature draws unwanted attention from the church.

The purpose of this page is to lay down the guidelines by which the editors and translators will fulfil their respective roles for this project. Guidelines are required to create a consistent reading format thoughout all the novels, to ensure the best Strike Witches experience for readers.

This page will be updated to include all terms, formats notes and other points for this project, it should always reflect the joint agreement of all parties.

This does not mean the Translators will have to take it upon themselves to apply the guidelines. This guide will mainly affect Editors, and we stress to Translators not to take it upon themselves to change their habits or preferences in any way that will hamper their progress.

At the same time, these are guidelines, not rules carved in stone, and no one will be crucified for failing tofollow them. The idea of these guidelines is that all the work will eventually converge on them after enough editing.

Proper nouns/ranks in other languages will be used where appropriate when characters would logically be speaking in their own language. Ranks will be kept in their respective languages until the entire squadron meets up and starts speaking in Britannian. == Story Synopsis ==

Strike Witches takes place in a world similar to Earth, but where magic exists. Magic abilities appear almost exclusively among young women, and usually disappears with age. However, these abilities are generally limited to raising a simple protective magic field, or moving objects slightly at a distance, or for some, flying on a broom. Then, in the 16th and 17 centuries, humanity entered into an age of discovery, highlighted by the Britannian witch Jamie Watt's invention of the magic engine, a steam-powered mechanical device which could boost a witch's natural magic powers several times over, which could then be used to drive all types of machinery. The magic engine was soon put to use in all forms of industry and transport, increasing production to levels previously thought impossible.

However, together with this huge increase in magic usage, sightings of the Neuroi, enigmatic lifeforms which had been spotted on scarce occasions for centuries, also began to increase exponentially. Appearing in countries all over the world, the Neuroi spread a noxious miasma, putrefying the land and consuming all types of metals, and they began encroaching on human territory. Normal soldiers could do nothing against that miasma, and humanity was on its last legs, with no choice but to retreat time and time again. It was then that it was discovered that a witch's protective field could block the miasma, and with the power of a magic engine, witches joined the battlefield. With the ability to easily wield weapons which would normally be far too heavy, imbue their attacks with magic, fly through the air freely, and block enemy attacks with magic fields, witches began to turn the tide against the Neuroi invasion. These witches, together with the Striker Units they wore, were known as "Strike Witches".

In 1939, as the European mainland faced the crisis of a Neuroi invasion of unprecedented scale, Imperial Army and Navy Witches from the far off Fuso Empire were sent to the battlefield as volunteer soldiers. One such Imperial Army Witch, Anabuki Tomoko, an ace and hero to the people after her outstanding service during the Neuroi raid known as the "Fuso Sea Incident", had been expecting to be sent to Karlsland, where the heaviest fighting was going on. However, she was instead deployed to the northernmost extreme of Europe, Suomus. There she meets the rest of her future fellow squadron members, none of whom had ever made a name for themselves in their former countries, instead being treated nearly like outcasts, half-baked witches without any talent or motivation. It's now up to the "Misfits Squadron", or officially the "Suomus Independent Volunteer Air Squadron", to find out how they can stand up to the Neuroi menace.

This series was written by Yamaguchi Noboru, also known for the Zero no Tsukaima series of light novels. It was first published in October 2006, and there are currently three books.

A separate light novel using the characters from the OVA and anime series was written by Nanbou Hidehisa, and published in August 2008.

A semi-official novel/manga doujinshi was released during Comiket 74, also in August 2008. The novel section was written by Suzuki Takaaki, while the manga section was illustrated by Nogami Takeshi.

This mainly goes for character speech, but I'll probably change things and just give a translation if it gets needlessly awkward. Set in a world similar to Earth in the mid twentieth century, Strike Witches tells the story of a fight to protect that world using a combination of magic and technology. The titular Strike Witches, a group of young women with high magical potential, have been gathered together from various nations in a task force to fight against the enigmatic Neuroi, which made their first strike in the year 1939. This puzzling enemy force has appeared frequently and without warning in many areas across the world. The weapons of the Neuroi mostly take on forms similar to aircraft, but their most troubling tactic is the spreading of a corrosive miasma. Not only do normal humans have no defense against this miasma, but the remnants of the land affected by it are processed by the Neuroi into new weapons, crumbling huge sections of former nations into the sea. As the miasma seems to be unable to spread across large bodies of water, humanity has designated such areas as their main lines of defense.

In order to bring out their potential for use in battle, each Witch equips a unique machine onto their legs: the Striker Unit. With the Striker Unit equipped, they gain the ability to fly and their tapped magical potential provides the strength to utilize weapons far too heavy and powerful for a normal person. Also created is a defensive field that can protect the Witches from the Neuroi's miasma as well as other physical weaponry, making them humanity's trump card in the war. The franchise's main media focuses on the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, spearheading the counterattack in war-torn Europe.

== Story Synopsis ==
Spice and Wolf's story revolves around Lawrence Craft, a twenty-five-year-old merchant. His main goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop, and he already has been traveling for seven years while gaining experience in the trade. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds a centuries-old pagan wolf-deity girl named Horo sleeping in his cart. She appears to be a fifteen-year-old girl, except she possesses a wolf’s tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town’s harvest goddess, who has kept the area blessed with good wheat crops for many years. Despite having the responsibility to watch over the town, she wishes to go back to her homeland in the north called Yoitsu, since she believes that the locals have forsaken their past agreement and therefore she is no longer bound to their land. == Note on current format==

A number of translators working on this project are new and thus work slower and require more help than the more seasoned veterans we have in other projects. Thus, many of the chapters are currently set up such that all translation and discussion is done side by side on the discussion pages, as opposed to the chapters themselves. This is only temporary however, and will revert to the standard formats once the editors start their work.

== Story Synopsis ==
Spice and Wolf's story revolves around Lawrence Craft, a twenty-five-year-old merchant. His main goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop, and he already has been traveling for seven years while gaining experience in the trade. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds a centuries-old pagan wolf-deity girl named Horo sleeping in his cart. She appears to be a fifteen-year-old girl, except she possesses a wolf’s tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town’s harvest goddess, who has kept the area blessed with good wheat crops for many years. Despite having the responsibility to watch over the town, she wishes to go back to her homeland in the north called Yoitsu, since she believes that the locals have forsaken their past agreement and therefore she is no longer bound to their land. She makes a deal with Lawrence to take her with him in exchange for her wisdom and supernatural abilities, but as they travel, her true nature draws unwanted attention from the church.

Due to the nature of it, the following guidelines (draft) has been put forward to ensure transparency & standard are maintained along with the applicable in the general guidelines.

The purpose of this page is to lay down the guidelines by which the editors and translators will fulfil their respective roles for this project. Guidelines are required to create a consistent reading format thoughout all the novels, to ensure the best Spice and Wolf experience for readers.

This page will be updated to include all terms, formats notes and other points for this project, it should always reflect the joint agreement of all parties.

This does not mean the Translators will have to take it upon themselves to apply the guidelines. This guide will mainly affect Editors, and we stress to Translators not to take it upon themselves to change their habits or preferences in any way that will hamper their progress.

At the same time, these are guidelines, not rules carved in stone, and no one will be crucified for failing tofollow them. The idea of these guidelines is that all the work will eventually converge on them after enough editing.

That is to say, the differences are mainly pronouns, verb endings, and gobi. She is perfectly intelligible to a modern Japanese speaker, whereas shakespearean english is not. Hence the following conventions:

*No contractions. "It is", "I am", and so on, will replace "It's" and "I'm". This is to represent her slightly aloof style of speech

I take as little creative license as I can when translating (stylistic issues are the editor's job) so it may seem a little forced at times. Of course, I'm also new to the translation business so there'll likely be plenty of errors. TLCs will have their work cut out for them.

The whole of the Milone Company, upon hearing Lawrence's story after suddenly dropping by, went from shocked to guarded.

== Story Synopsis ==
Spice and Wolf's story revolves around Lawrence Craft, a twenty-five-year-old merchant. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds a centuries-old pagan wolf-deity girl named Horo sleeping in his cart. I take as little creative license as I can when translating (stylistic issues are the editor's job) so it may seem a little forced at times. Of course, I'm also new the TL business so there'll likely be plenty of errors. TLCs have their work cut out for them.

= Chapter 4, Page 175 =

ミローネ商会の面々は、突然訪問したロレンスの話を聞くや否や、驚いた表情をあっという間に警戒のそれに変えた。

The whole of the Milone Company, upon hearing Lawrence's story after suddenly dropping by, went from shocked to guarded.

ただ、それもゼLレンがロレンスに持ちかけた取引の裏を突くことをミローネ商会に持ちかけているのだ。

ゼーレンの話の時点ですぐに信用できるようなものではないのに、さらにそこの裏を突くようなロレンスの話は、もっと信用できなくても当然といえば当然だった。

Although Zelen's proposal was not something one could trust at the time, Lawrence's story was naturally even less trustworthy.

それに、ミローネ商会とは毛皮の一件がある。

Moreover, there was the matter of the furs.

今後の商取引に影響がありそうなほど怒ってはいなかったが、さすがに担当者はロレンスの姿を笑いだった。

It may influence future trades, but they weren't angry over it, though as expected the man in charge was laughing at the irony.

それでもミローネ商会が一応動いてくれたのは、ロレンスがゼーレンと公証人の下で交わした契約書を見せたからだ。

But even so, the Milone Company will move once it is shown the contract that Lawrence and Zelen signed under the attestor.

取引はミローネ商会が存分に確信を持ててからでいいと。

Then the Milone Company can proceed without reserve.

さらに、ロレンスはゼーレンの背後関係を調べてくれと言って、これが単純な詐欺ではないことを強調した。

Additionally, Lawrence told them to examine Zelen's background and emphasized that this was no simple swindle.

ここまですれば例え詐欺にしても手の込んだものだとミローネ商会は考える。

If it does this much, the Milone Company will consider this a carefully planned fraud.

そうすれば後学のためにわざと首を突っ込んでくれる。

So they will deliberately intervene for information that may be useful in the future.

ロレンスはそう考え、そして、実際にそのとおりになった。

And even as Lawrence hypothesized as such, so it came to pass.

なにより、ロレンスの考えが当たっていればこの取引でミローネ商会は莫大な利益を得る。

Most importantly, if Lawrence's deducations were to be accurate, the Milone Copmany would
obtain an enormous profit with this transaction.

ミローネ商会は虎視眈々と他の商会を出し抜く機会を窺っているはずなのだ。

The Milone Company is sure to have been looking out for a chance to outdo their rivals.

多少胡散臭い話でも大きな利益の可能性は見逃さないだろうという予想は、当たっていた。

The expectation is that they would not overlook the possibility of huge gains even in light of the somewhat suspicious story.

= Chapter 4, Page 176 =

ロレンスがミローネ商会にとりあえずこの話に興味を持ってもらうことに成功したその後にしたことは、まずゼーレンといいう男の存在を証明することだ。

After having succeeded in perking the Milone Company's interest in his story, Lawrence's first task was to prove the existence of the man called Zelen.
ロレンスとホロは早速その日の日没にヨーレンドの酒場に出向き、ゼーレンと連絡を取りたいとウェイトレスの娘に告げた。

They were informed to go to a bar in Yorrend at sunset of that day, and inform the daughter of the waitress immediately if Zelen appears.

ゼーレンは案の定毎日定刻にここに顔を出すわけではないようで店内に姿がなかったが、ウェイトレスの娘はたまたま今日だけいなかったようなことを言い、そして日が沈んでしばらく経ってからゼーレンが姿を現した。

Though Zelen didn't show his form at the appointed time every day as I had thought, unexpectedly the waitress' daughter wasn't around, and a short while after the sun had gone down, Zelen appeared.

ロレンスは他愛のない商売の話をゼーレンとしていたが、その模様は事前に打ち合わせをしておいたミローネ商会の人間が近くの席で秘密裏に観察していたはずだ。

Lawrence had an innocent business story prepared for Zelen, while the Milone Company had secretly made arrangements beforehand to observe the man in the nearby seat.

これから数日間、ミローネ商会はロレンスの持ちかけてきた商談が事実であるかどうかの判断を、ゼーレンの身辺を調査することでつける手はずだった。

For a few days, The Milone Company would judge the truth of Lawrence's proposal by investigating Zelen's background.

ロレンスは、まず間違いなくゼーレンの背後には大商人が控えていると思っている。

Lawrence believed that a large merchant company surely had to be backing Zelen.

そして、背後に大商人が控えていれば、まず間違いなくロレンスの思ったとおりの構図がそこにあるはずだったし、だとすればそれをミローネ商会が確かめるのもたやすいことだと思った。

And if a large merchant were indeed backing him, the underlying threads linking them would be there, and easy for the Milone Company to confirm.

ただ、問題はあった。

There was just one problem.

「間に合うかや？」

"Will we be on time?"

ミローネ商会がゼーレンの身辺調査を開始したその日の夜、宿に帰ってホロはそう言った。

Horo asked when they returned to the inn after the evening the Milone Company had started its investigation.

ホロの言うとおり、間題は時間だった。

As Horo said, the problem was time.

仮にロレンスの仮説がすべて正しかったとしても、場合によってはもう利益など見込めなくなる可能性がある。

There was a possibility that the profits would not be as expected, even if Lawrence's hypothesis was correct.

いや、出るには出るだろうが、ミローネ商会が商会として動いてくれるほどの利益は見込めなくなるかもしれない。

Well, it's likely to happen anyway, but the Milone company might not be possible to predict the gains.

そうなればロレンス一人でこの話から利益を出すのは難しくなる。

If not, it becomes difficult for Lawrence to gain profit from this venture.

その代わり、ミローネ商会がすばやく決断をして計画に着手すれば、転がり込む利益は途方もないものになる。

If on the other hand, the Milone Company decides quickly to go ahead with the project, the profits that roll in will be extraordinary.

ロレンスがゼーレンの背後に見た企みと、その裏を突く企みは、そういった類のものだった。

The scheme of Zelen that Lawrence uncovered, and the scheme to counter it, was of such a kind.

「まあ、おそらく間に合うだろう。そう思ったからこそミローネ商会に頼んだ」

"Well, we'll probably be on time. I thought as such when I asked the Milone Company."

ろうそくの明かりを頼りに、酒場から小売りしてもらったぶどう酒をコップに注ぎ、ロレンスは中を覗きこんでから半分ほど一息に飲んだ。

Lawrence poured some wine from the bar, and after glancing at the half-full glass under the candlelight, drank the whole thing.

ベッドの上で胡坐をかいて同じくぶどう酒の注がれたコップを手にしたホロが、中身を干してからそんなロレンスを見る。

He similarly poured a cup for Horo, who sitting cross-legged on the bed, and watched as she took it and dried its contents.

「あの商会はそんなに優秀なのかや？」

"Is that company really that good?"

「異国の地で商売を成功させるには、とにかく強力な耳を持つことだ。

"To succeed at business in foreign countries, it's sure to have a powerful information network.

酒場での商人達の会話や、市場での客達の会話。

Conversations of merchants in bars and in the market.

それらを周りより飛びぬけて多く集めなければ異国の地に商会の支店を構え、立派な大きさにすることなどできない。

If they didn't have excellent communication between their branch offices, being a company of their size wouldn't be possible.

その点、あの商会はかなりのものだろう。

At this point, that company is considerable."

ゼーレンという男一人の身の回りを調べるくらいは造作ないと思う」

The easist way is by examining the background of the man called Zelen.

喋りながら、ロレンスは酒を注ぐようにと催促するホロのコップをぶどう酒で満たし、喋り終わる頃にはホロのそれは空になっていた。

The cup of wine that Lawrence had poured at Horo's request while they were talking had been emptied after they had finished.

その上に次を催促する。

On top of that she asked for more.

呆れた早さだ。

What speed.

= Chapter 4, Page 178 =

「ふうん……」

「どうかしたか?」

"What did you do?"

ぼんやりとした顔で遠くを見つめて気のない返事をしたのでホロは何か思うところがあったのかと思ったのだが、どうやらだいぶ酔いが回っているだけのようだった。

She replied indifferently while staring off into the distance with a blank look, seemingly having gotten considerably drunk.

手にコップを持ったまま、まぶたがゆっくりと閉じかけていた。

Her eyes were slowly closing as she held her cup.

「しかし、ずいぶん飲むな」

"But that really was fast."

「酒の魅力は大きい……」

"This wine is very captivating..."

「まあ、それなりの酒だしな。普段はこんないいものは飲まない」

"Well it is quite passable. Usually you wouldn't drink wine of such quality."

「そうなのかや？」

"Is that so?"

「金がない時は、葡萄の搾りかすでどろどろになっていたり、砂糖や蜂蜜やショウガを入れないと飲めないくらい苦かったりするようなのも飲む。

"When you don't have the money, even something as bitter as squeezed pulpy grapes without sugar, honey or ginger must be drunk.

コップの底が見えるようなぶどう酒は基本的にぜいたく品だ」

Basically, wine that is clear enough to see the bottom of your glass is a luxury commodity."

ロレンスの言葉に、ホロは手元のコップを覗き込んでからぼんやりと眩いた。

At Lawrence's words, Horo gazed blankly at the cup in her hand and felt dizzy.

「ふむ。これくらいが普通なのかと思っとった」

"Hmph. I thought this was normal."

「はっは。そりゃあよいご身分だ」

"Haha. Only if you were upper class."

ロレンスは笑いながらそう言ったのだが、ホロはロレンスのそんな言葉を聞くと途端に顔をこわばらせて、うつむきが
ちにコシプをベッドの下の床に置くとそのままベッドの上で丸くなってしまった。

Lawrence said as he laughed, but while he was talking Horo's face had stiffened up and, lying down on the bed, she put her cup on the floor underneath, and curled up to sleep.

= Chapter 4, Page 179 =

あまりにも唐突過ぎて、ロレンスは驚いてそんなホロの様子をただ見つめていたのだが、少なくとも眠いからそうしたとかいう雰囲気ではあり得なった。

It was so sudden that even though she was sleepy, the atmosphere in the room had changed such that Lawrence could only just stare at her.

少し自分の言動を思い返す。

He reconsidered his actions a little.

何かホロの気に障るようなことを言ってしまったのかもしれない。

Perhaps Horo was annoyed at something he'd said.

「どうした？」

What's wrong?

しかし、特に思いつかずそう尋ねてみるが、ホロのとがった狼の耳はピクリとも動かない。

However, even after asking as the idea hit him, Horo's pointed ears didn't prick up.

どうも相当怒っているようだった。

It seemed she was somehow quite angry.

ロレンスはそれ以上声もかけられず必死に頭を巡らせていたのだが、やがて思い出した。

Lawrence mulled it over in his head without saying anything, and before long, remembered.

ホロと出会った時に交わしたやり取りを。

The exchange they had when he had met Horo.

「もしかして、よい身分だって言ったのに怒ったのか？」

"Could it be, you're angry at the social status thing I said?"

ホロはロレンスに狼の姿を見せろと言われた時、恐れおののかれるのが嫌だと言った。

When Horo agreed to show Lawrence her wolf form, she had said she didn't like how I had been afraid.

また、特別な存在に祭り上げられるのも嫌だと言った。

Moreover, being admired and revered was also something she disliked.

ロレンスは旅の吟遊詩人の歌を思い出す。

Lawrence recalled the song of the wandering minstrel.

神が年に一回の祭りを要求するのは、そのあまりの寂しさからだ、という歌を。

The song of god requiring a yearly festival and the lonely remainder from it.

「悪かった。特に深い意味があって言ったんじゃない」

"I'm sorry. I didn't get the deep meaning of it."

しかし、ホロは相変わらずピクリともしなかった。

However, Horo didn't stir as normal.
