thank you for starting NGNL...wanna ask ganna do all volume 5 or some parts of it.
:me too, want to thank you for translating NGNL vol 5, I was really curious about how the arc will end.I hope you will translate it completely

Probably gonna do all of it, but I suck at formatting/editing so the prologue isn't uploaded yet. Was originally gonna help out of volume 4 but I was afraid of offending the previous translator so I just let it be and started on volume 4. Prologue of Vol. 5 should be up by today though - Venis

:Lol, you can go ahead and translate chapters of Volume 4, as long as you register it in the registration page first. ;) they say the two translators per volume rule only applies to popular series like SAO so our volumes can have 3 translators. Thanks for translating the V5 prologue. I read it and it's really long compared to the other volumes. Hello Venis, thanks for your translations, you've really made some progress in the few weeks you've been around. Just some points of discussion on the project conventions (relevant to your recent post on Takoyakiinator talk page): I believe there is no actual requirement that translators list themselves in the "project staff" section, their name next to the chapter on the registration page is the only thing required. Also, the "2 week" rule is designed to remove people that have gone MIA and no longer come around BT. As such, the translator only has to reply that they are still working on it within two weeks to preserve their registration; they do not need to finish their translation within two weeks. Of course, you can always politely ask if they mind you taking over their translations; often times the translator will reply that they do not mind. Regards, --Cthaeh (talk) 07:11, 8 June 2014 (CDT)

:Thanks a lot for that explanation. But still I think the messages I've posted on the other translators' walls carry just about the same meaning? Also for those that have already done some work I also stated that they can replace my translations at any time within two weeks, I don't really mind. Just that I was rather impatient at getting Kagerou Days completely approved. So anyway, essentially as long as there's no response within two weeks I get the all-clear right? Thanks again for all that, I'm really new here so please forgive me if I've done anything wrong. -Venis (talk) 07:15, 8 June 2014 (CDT)
:::Hmm, yes, if you want to focus on it, it sure is better that way. More content on a series that already has translators is more satisfying that trying from scratch for a teaser project to reach full status (Talking about Hataraku Maou-sama). Venis, just one question. What is up with your signature being plastered all over the NGNL V5 Ch2? I have found it 3 times a bit after halfway through, interrupting sentences or even words.
Just one question: In Volume 5 Chapter 2 Part 10, it was stated that Jibril killed 19 giants with others and one herself. She also helped to take down three "Fairies" and killed one herself. So I would like to know if it is a mistranslation, because the Fairies have lower rank in the Exceeds than the Elves (Reference) and they hung the heads of the Fairies on the humongous tree. So I would like to ask, if they were really Fairies or if it is another race like the Dragonia (which I would believe more likely). If I misunderstood something, I'm very sorry. - Newton 21:59, 21 July 2014

:Well, assuming there isn't a mistake on the translation, I would say that, as has been mentioned, Exceed ranking goes according to magic affinity. That means that "how hard it is to kill something" does not necessarily align with the ranking. Perhaps (assuming that Fairies are ranked 8th) they are an opponent more formidable than other races, due to some special characteristic. I mean, considering how Werebeasts can actually physically surpass the corresponding physical capabilities of the last and most powerful Flugel ever made, while standing on a mere 14th rank, a whole 8 ranks below, I believe that a race that is even more aligned to magical properties than elves (being ranked lower because of lack of spell combinations, while keeping raw force perhaps, as is implied by their name corresponding to pure magical beings in our world) actually CAN be made to be a formidable opponent.
:All these are assumptions though. Do not trust my words, wait for translation of the next volumes for answers, or for a translator who makes my statement completely unnecessary by stating it was a mistake. Daxter (talk) 17:01, 21 July 2014 (CDT)
:::::Thanks for the answer. Also Daxter: I know that the Exceed ranking doesn't say much about their difficulty in defeating them. But if you think about the fact that the Flugel can split the ocean with 5% of their power and kill thousand elves without any problem (Ok, I know that Jibril is one of the strongest in Flugel race, but this shows that they have a lot of power when they have no restriction), but yeah you're right, I shouldn't underestimate other race. so thanks. - Newton 23:42, 21 July 2014
Just fyi, I'm 99% sure the only reason Kagerou days hasn't been updated to full project is because none of the wiki admins have noticed, or had the free time to add it to the sidebar. Once 1 volume is complete, which is true here, there aren't many reasons why it wouldn't be upgraded; and none of those few would apply here. So I don't think you need to be paranoid (re your user page). If you wanted to try to speed it up, one thing you could try is to follow the link on this page and post to make it more likely one of the admins notices, though it's still not a guarantee. --Cthaeh (talk) 08:07, 9 June 2014 (CDT)
Adding thoughts on chapter titles as well. Using　≪≫ to represent furigana. First one's straightforward as can be.
Volume 1:
Prologue / プロローグ
Chapter 1: Beginner / 素人≪ビギナー≫
Chapter 2: Challenger / 挑戦者≪チャレンジャー≫
Chapter 3: Expert / 熟練者≪エキスパート≫
Chapter 4: Grand Master / 国王≪グランドマスター≫
Epilogue / エピローグ
All the titles (minus epilogue) are Chess terms.
Volume 2:
Opening / オープニング (Replaces the prologue.)
Chapter 1: Weak Square / 駒並べ≪ウィークスクエア≫
Chapter 2: Interesting /　一手≪インタレスティング≫ (Move name in Japan for an interesting move that doesn't (I think) carry over to English. "Out of Book" or "Novelty" could be good replacements.)
Chapter 3: Sacrifice / 死に手≪サクリファイス≫
Chapter 4: Checkmate / 王手≪チェックメイト≫
Fake Ending / フェイクエンド (Also replaces the epilogue.)
Not really sure what these are all about. Kanji and furigana meanings differ.
Volume 3:
Load Save / データロード
Chapter 1: Sky Walk / 解離法≪スカイ・ウオーク≫
Chapter 2: Blue Rose / 指向法≪ブルー・ローズ≫
Chapter 3: Killing Giant / 誘導法≪キリング・ジャイアント≫
Chapter 4: Rule Number 10 / 収束法≪ルール・ナンバー・10≫
True Ending / トゥルーエンド
This novel also plays with the kanji, having them be different from the furigana definitions. And two of the chapter's kanji are upside-down. I can't figure out how to make Japanese upside down (it's not that hard for English, though), but know that the kanji for chapters 1 and 3 are supposed to be upside down.
Volume 4:
Easy Start / イージースタート
Chapter 1: Encounter / 悪魔≪エンカウント≫
Chapter 2: Strategist / 太陽≪ストラテジスト≫
Chapter 3: Charmer / 女帝≪チャーマー≫
Chapter 4: Wildcard / 愚者≪ワイルドカード≫
Interrupted Ending / インタラプトエンド
:I'll come back to this in a short while once I have more time; for now, a quick note that the upside-down names in the fourth volume's chapters seem to be Tarot (Major Arcana) references. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_arcana#List_of_the_Major_Arcana ) For instance, the chapter which bears the meaning of 'Charmer' would probably be given as 'The Empress reversed'--I suggest that Tarot-evoking representation rather than forcing upside-downness, though upsidedown-ness might in fact be more true to the original. For a non-furigana format, perhaps 'Charmer (The Empress reversed)' or similar. For each volume, the slight differences between reading and meaning are interesting (though sometimes a little hard to understand), so I would like them to be retained in some format if possible. Speaking of which, thank you for putting the kanji (and katana) here for easy copying/investigation! In a short while, when I have a little more time, I'll look at the first three volumes and give suggestions. For now, the fourth volume: Encounter (The Devil reversed), Strategist (The Sun), Charmer (The Empress reversed), Wildcard (The Fool). -Multipartite (talk) 05:17, 8 August 2013 (CDT)
Suggestions for the chapter titles (first volume too for consistency, even when redundant):
[Disclaimer: I do not claim a deep understanding of certain things, and so the below can be treated as interim suggestions until someone finds more accurate equivalents.]
|
Beginner (Amateur), Challenger (Challenger), Expert (Expert), Grandmaster (Country's King)
['Kokuou' especially it would be good if there were a better term for that which still distinguished it from 'Ou' or 'Ou-sama'.]
[Ah, also 'Grandmaster' (as in Chess) is spelled as one word.]
*I'm actually just for using the furigana since all but one of them match perfectly, and Grandmaster is fine for me. There's plenty of words in English for "King," but in this case, "King" is the most fitting. Don't have to specify king of what.
|
Weak Square (Setting the Board), Interesting (One Move), Sacrifice (Doomed Move), Checkmate (Check)
['Checkmate' would in practice be '王手詰み' perhaps... this may be ignoring intention for accuracy, however. For '死に手', I tried to use a phrasing that reflected the inevitable death of the piece without indicating whether something stood to be gained from it or not.]
Since it's in katakana, it may be worth keeping the closing part for this one as 'Fake End' rather than adding sounds. Particularly, it doesn't use 'エンディング' even though Opening uses 'オープニング'.
*Doomed move to me means a move that will fail whereas a sacrifice results in death, but for a purpose. So something like "Mortal Move" would be better for the kanji; somewhat difficult to word it without making it sound like a great move. There's still the whole "Interesting" isn't a Chess term in English though.
|
For the third volume, I would similar suggest a direct 'Data Load'/'True End' transliteration.
[Unfortunately I have no idea what source was used for these; 'Blue Rose' in particular prompts my curiosity. It's possible they are obscure references, such as the breeding of a blue rose or the killing of giant through leading it into traps. I searched somewhat for game strategy names, but could not find any of relevance. If there exists one game with these strategies, there could be more appropriate translations of the kanji words.]
Sky Walk (Dissociation Method), Blue Rose (Orientation Method), Killing Giant (Guiding Method), Rule Number 10 (Converging Method)
*Problem with "Data Load". Data load is a common phrase in Japanese for our equivalent of loading saves. At the very least, it would have to be "Load Data" to keep the same meaning and fluidity (as it generally only appears as an option to load save data in games). ローズ could also be "Laws," not that helps any. I still have no idea what these are reference to.
|
(For the fourth volume, similarly 'Interrupt End' perhaps; 'Encount' is an exception in that it does not phonetically correspond to an/its English word.)
Encounter (The Devil reversed), Strategist (The Sun), Charmer (The Empress reversed), Wildcard (The Fool)
-Multipartite (talk) 09:05, 8 August 2013 (CDT)
*Didn't realize they were Tarot names (Only used to seeing those English). Like I said, I dislike furigana so I don't have any ways I'd personally like to implement it aside from making them look together to begin with. And "Interrupt End" is Engrish unless we're talking coding, which I don't think he is considering the "End" theme. "Interrupt" has to at least be "Interrupted" or "Interruption". Even インタラプトエンド isn't really used in Japanese without it being "インタラプトエンドポイント", or Interrupt Endpoint like in English. And as noted with "Encount," the Japanese don't always (or actually most the time) use our words like we would. "End" can also be used as "Ending" despite there being differences in English, but in these cases either works fine. I just went with "Ending" to supplement "Opening," despite that "Opening" was most likely simply used as a chess term there. —EnigmaticRepose (talk) 15:02, 8 August 2013 (CDT)
Okay, I added the chapter names. I kept in the Furigana because I wasn't sure whether you wanted them to be in the title's name or not. If not, go ahead and delete them. I changed Orientation Method to Directional Method because orientation sound too much like a school term in my opinion. As for the Epilogues, instead of Ending, I used End. While it may seem incorrect from an English point of view, I see phrases like these all the time (Happy End, Bad End, Good End...especially in galges and TWGOK). I'd just like to keep it more directly translated...maybe because the words seem to have a different feeling? It also stays truer to how "End" is used in other materials as well. I also kept it as Interrupt End, so you can figure out whether it's "Interrupted" or "Interrupting" or "Interrupter" or whatnot. Thanks for helping out with all of this. It really helps, and I never knew there was an epilogue...(I'm a simple editor.)
I think the katakana should be changed to english words because there are people who can't read them.

I suggest to change it to English of Furigana <<English of Kanji>>

Furigana is written first because that is how people will read it and it's followed by the kanji to show it's meaning (and maybe adding this as a footnote for the title in chapter will help readers understand it).

Or another way to write it would be like #2 in here: http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Itsuka_Tenma_no_Kuro_Usagi:Volume_1#Translator.27s_Notes_and_References
I don't really think that's necessary. If you can read the katakana, it reads the first word of the chapter names. For example, Chapter 4: Grandmaster/The King ≪グランドマスター≫. If I translated the katakana, it would be read: Grandmaster/The King «Grandmaster». Besides, I'm not sure if the katakana should be in the chapter titles anyway, so depending on what EnigmaticRepose says, it may be deleted at any time.
I don't see a reason to keep the katakana from the furigana in. While it can make the chapter titles look exotic, it just looks like "Grandmaster/The King/Grandmaster" to those who can read it. Could always dick with the upsidedown arcana in volume 4, too. Like: lıʌǝᗡ ǝɥ⊥. EnigmaticRepose, did you mean "stick" instead of "dick"? If you'd want to do that, then it's fine. I have removed the katakana from the titles, and I have changed "Interesting" to "Unexpected Move". It makes sense to me, but if you disagree, then by all means, change it to what you think is right.

Something of a flurry back and forth, so throwing in my current strongest impressions:
(Though this is reiteration,) As a general pedantic tendency, I tend to suggest that translations and transliterations be kept as close to their original as possible, especially when the original author could have chosen different wording and didn't.
I agree that having both katakana and the transliteration of the katakana would be redundant. Relevantly, kanji and katakana appear once each in the book's chapter titles, with no third part (other than the chapter number).
I do not mind whether angle brackets or parentheses or some other form of brackets are used, but I request if possible that the kanji translations be in some form of brackets to indicate 'this is the (kanji) meaning'. As it is, with slashes, it looks as though it's two separate equal titles, losing the 'This is how it's read (This is what it means)' two-levels nuance.
-Multipartite (talk) 22:29, 8 August 2013 (CDT)

Go ahead and do that. How about with the ≪≫ that you used for the katakana above? I would do it myself, but those two brackets always end up small and strange for some reason...don't forget that the chapters themselves need the same editing as well. I also like keeping things close to their original meaning...do you mean to say that Sacrificial Move should be changed back to Doomed Move, and Unexpected Move back to Interesting?
To Multi: I love keeping in original writing quirks and tendencies as well, it's just the author's knowledge of other languages often shows in these wording choices. So it's a problem of accuracy and fluidity over trusting the author knows a language that he has shown no real experience in. I've seen way too much Engrish to trust an author unless they straight-out spell it in English with proper grammar. Personally don't see a reason to. And they aren't small, nonsensical variations to what we know; they're mostly from different origins. Instead of calling the sea people the English "Sirens", he uses the original Greek "Seirenes". Dhampirs and vampires are also different to begin with. One thing I will note, however, is the manga localizes Steph's name as "Stephanie Dola". I'm conflicted whether I should personally care enough to change it, as both "Stephanie" and "Dora" are of Greek origin as well, and Dola is a what-are-you-even-doing thing to me. YESTERDAY! Seriously now, don't feel guilt. You are providing your knowledge for free. Go at your own pace, and if you cannot do it now, everyone will have to wait. This is something you are giving out, so you can give it out however you want. But do it. Fast. I'm getting impatient. GET IT OVER WITH ALREADY! No rush though. Chill. Adding thoughts on chapter titles as well. Using　≪≫ to represent furigana. First one's straightforward as can be.
Volume 1:
Prologue / プロローグ
Chapter 1: Beginner / 素人≪ビギナー≫
Chapter 3: Expert / 熟練者≪エキスパート≫
Chapter 4: Grand Master / 国王≪グランドマスター≫
Epilogue / エピローグ
All the titles (minus epilogue) are Chess terms.
Volume 2:
Opening / オープニング (Replaces the prologue.)
Chapter 1: Weak Square / 駒並べ≪ウィークスクエア≫
Chapter 2: Interesting /　一手≪インタレスティング≫ (Move name in Japan for an interesting move that doesn't (I think) carry over to English. "Out of Book" or "Novelty" could be good replacements.)
Chapter 3: Sacrifice / 死に手≪サクリファイス≫
Chapter 4: Checkmate / 王手≪チェックメイト≫
Fake Ending / フェイクエンド (Also replaces the epilogue.)
Not really sure what these are all about. Kanji and furigana meanings differ.
Volume 3:
Load Save / データロード
Chapter 1: Sky Walk / 解離法≪スカイ・ウオーク≫
Chapter 2: Blue Rose / 指向法≪ブルー・ローズ≫
Chapter 3: Killing Giant / 誘導法≪キリング・ジャイアント≫
Chapter 4: Rule Number 10 / 収束法≪ルール・ナンバー・10≫
True Ending / トゥルーエンド
This novel also plays with the kanji, having them be different from the furigana definitions. And two of the chapter's kanji are upside-down. I can't figure out how to make Japanese upside down (it's not that hard for English, though), but know that the kanji for chapters 1 and 3 are supposed to be upside down.
Volume 4:
Easy Start / イージースタート
Chapter 1: Encounter / 悪魔≪エンカウント≫
Chapter 2: Strategist / 太陽≪ストラテジスト≫
Chapter 3: Charmer / 女帝≪チャーマー≫
Chapter 4: Wildcard / 愚者≪ワイルドカード≫
Interrupted Ending / インタラプトエンド
ᗡ
|
|
|
|

Didn't feel like doing the fancy formatting this time.—EnigmaticRepose (talk) 21:07, 8 August 2013 (CDT)
*Nah, I said the word I meant. I only want to keep it consistent with Chess terminology.

It gives him more credibility than I believed he had. But doesn't 「幼少期はアメリカで過ごし、小学生の時に日本に移住」 mean he spent his early childhood in the US, but immigrated to Japan sometime during elementary school? I've known a couple guys in similar circumstances who have forgotten the majority of their original language. Granted I never asked how early they moved to the US for reference. But still, final say goes to the translator (aka the one who speaks Japanese). Things like "Interrupt End" just comes off as Engrish without changing it somehow. —EnigmaticRepose (talk) 23:48, 8 August 2013 (CDT)
Some names
As you've probably noticed this novel goes with small changes to the names we commonly know (imanity=humanity, danpires=vampires, seren=siren, etc) so I suggest the change Jibril -> Gibriel, especially with the appearance of Azrael. --jonathanasdf (talk) 02:56, 5 January 2014 (CST)

I mean, there's nothing technically wrong with it as it is a name, but it just seems off to me. —EnigmaticRepose (talk) 03:20, 5 January 2014 (CST)
A simple question
On the main page, about Volume 4 Chapter 1, there is a (10%) note left. Does that signify something, or is it just forgotten there from when it was being translated, and it is actually completed? Daxter (talk) 09:45, 8 June 2014 (CDT)
:After checking the current status of the chapter, while it seems to be still incomplete, it looks like the translator forgot to update both that note and the in-chapter "incomplete" progress bar. I'd say it's at around 80-90% (if we take ~3,000 characters as 10%). The only way to know would be directly asking the translator to update the progress (I'll go do that).--Kemm (talk) 11:47, 8 June 2014 (CDT)
Thanks for taking the time to do that. I will wait patiently for the result. -Daxter
:::It's roughly 40% done. this chapter's really long and has 6 parts ;-; overseas at the moment, will put more time into translating when I get home. Maine12329 (talk) 18:50, 9 June 2014 (CDT)

It's alright man, take your time. And by take your time, I mean do not rush to the point of making translating mistakes. As long as you make no mistakes, GET THAT SH*T DONE! QUICK! NOW! Chill. Good luck with whatever you have to do there, and get back safely, above all. So that you can translate. As fast as you can. As soon as you can. Just translate goddammit. I seem to be repeating myself... Daxter (talk) 12:13, 10 June 2014 (CDT) (With all honesty, thanks for your good work man. Keep it up.)
Spellings
I probably should have asked this a while ago, but are we using American English or British English? It seems like both types of spellings are being used interchangeably without any consistency. Unlucky (talk) 14:53, 1 July 2014 (CDT)

Short Story 1: Hikigaya Hachiman’s taste of home cooking is wrong as expected
It was the peak of the fall reading season. Typically, this would be the season to be indulging in books, but today just wouldn’t let that come to pass as we stared at the computer that Hiratsuka-sensei forced onto.

“Chiba Prefecture Region Problem Consultation Mails…”

When I apathetically announced the title, Yuigahama clapped her hands repeatedly.

Yukinoshita stopped her hands that flipped the pages of her paperback book and gave me a puzzled look.

“…Hey, where did this get sent from?”

“Well, Hiratsuka-sensei probably had something to do with it…”

Recently, Hiratsuka-sensei suddenly added problem consultation mails to the activities of the Service Club. Apparently, they were mails from various people in school with issues.

Yuigahama looked at the computer and read aloud.

“Errm, today’s first letter is… A letter from a resident of Chiba City, Pen Name: Master Fencer Shogun-sama.”

This guy’s pen name didn't mean anything, did it…? Just now, not only did a real name come to mind, but so did a face and figure.

<Pen Name: Master Fencer Shogun-san’s Problem>

[I have chuunibyou, but I want to love]

<The Service Club’s Answer>

[Even if you’re suffering from chuunibyou, you can still love. Why don’t you muster up your courage and try confessing? The other party should reply with this: “I’m sorry.”]

“……He’s getting turned down already!?”

Yuigahama who was reading the answer noticed a little late. Unrequited love and a broken love were splendid loves too, you know?

But, well, just like this, only bothersome, worthless problems would come in. Also, even though it said Chiba Prefecture Region, only mails from Chiba City came in.

In any case, one case was dealt with, so on to the next mail. I sent Yuigahama a look to go on.

“Ah, okay, I’ll read the next one. Umm… This is from Pen Name: Currently looking for a spouse, I have stable income (teacher)-san.”

Hey, again, was there any point in having a pen name? Not to mention the appeal here was really outrageous. How serious was this person, like really? Then again, I mostly understood what this problem entailed from just the pen name alone.

<Pen Name: Currently looking for a spouse, I have stable income (teacher)-san >

[As embarrassing as it is, I’m not particularly in well-versed in housework and that, of course, includes cooking. I can't help but worry when I'm married in the future (lol). In the first place, I’m worried as to whether I can get married (lol), but I’m thinking I want to try to remember at least one special recipe I can cook. Something popular with men (lol), also something light so it’s popular with men, ah, I wrote that twice, didn’t I (lol)? Anyway, is there anything simple that will leave a good impression with the men?”

“This isn’t something you ask students, is it…?”

Creepy. This person's too serious that it's creepy. Also, the overuse of the self-inflicting (lol)'s were really freaking scary, so it's really creepy. But my fear wasn't at all shared with the other two as they nonchalantly talked.

“Ah, maybe meat and potato stew? Or something made at home?”

“If it's Japanese-styled hamburger, then just a little change to it would leave a different impression, wouldn't it?”

Well, what those two were saying were well-grounded. But it's exactly because it's well-grounded that there's a downfall to it.

“Well, wait. It's a minus if you end up aiming too high since conversely, it'll make you look creepy instead.”

Women who made those tend to think “as long I made this, then I'll have it in the bag (lol), guys are too easy (lol) and I wasn't too fond of that. Whoa, stereotyping.

“Then what would be good?”

“I-I might want to know too, a little bit.”

Yukinoshita shot a look at me while Yuigahama looked at me nervously.

“It looks to me you guys don't know the true meaning behind the “taste of home cooking”. Listen here. The thing about moms are that the way they handle their sons and daughters are completely different. And the taste of home cooking to men of the world is basically...”

When I stopped abruptly, Yuigahama bended forward. Wait a second, I didn't say anything big...

“Just some adequately baked meat and white rice. This is the taste of home cooking.”

“...I feel silly for listening to you seriously.”

“And here I was thinking what you'd come up with...”

Both of them were completely astounded. If I were to write astounded as “AKIRE”, then that would give off vibes of a masterpiece.

But, well, I had an excuse to go with that.

“Anyway, the point is that a guy's stomach is very simple. Also, once it reaches marriage, then cooking is something you do every day, you know?”

When I spoke, Yukinoshita placed her hand on her chin and took a pondering posture.

“That's true. If it's something everyday, then we'll have to think of a lineup of dishes that the person won't get tired of...”

“No, anything complicated is just a pain. The easier, the better.”

“You're looking at this from a house-husband point of view...!? Not to mention your thinking is too realistic.”

“...Well, I'll just keep it in mind as a reference. How would this be or an answer?”

<The Service Club's Answer>

[Meat and potato stew and Japanese-styled hamburger would be the major ones but a dish that men would be reminded of their mother's home cooking would be ginger-fried pork. But Hiratsuka-sensei, shouldn't you find a partner first?]

...There really was no point to the pen names.

Someone take her already. Please.
