These mountain stripes are a TRADEMARK<ref>They're talking about the Shinsengumi haori jacket with mountain stripes that was the uniform of a special police force in Japan (but mainly Kyoto, the capital at the time) in the 1800s. The kanji that you see on Günter's paper bag in the picture is "Makoto" which means fidelity. Originally the Shinsengumi wore a head band with that word inscribed on it, because they were loyal to the military government, thus the kanji.
