A série ''Monogatari'' conta as histórias do protagonista Koyomi Araragi, um estudante do terceiro ano do Ensino Médio, e suas relações com garotas e criaturas sobrenaturais.

			Koyomi Araragi é um aluno desleixado, sem amigos, cujo mais profundo desejo é virar uma planta, pois então ele não precisaria caminhar nem ter de conversar com ninguém. Em circunstâncias engraçadas - mas magníficas para um garoto da idade dele - ele acaba se tornando amigo de Tsubasa Hanekawa, a garota mais inteligente do colégio. Ao mesmo tempo, rumores se espalham sobre a vinda de um vampiro para a cidade rural onde Koyomi mora. Esta é a história das férias de primavera de Koyomi Araragi, na qual ele se envolve numa corrente de eventos que não traz final feliz pra ninguém, seja vampiro, humano, ou algo entre os dois conceitos.

			Ele volta a ser (quase) humano depois de ter sido transformado, por um breve período, em um vampiro. Certo dia, uma colega chamada Hitagi Senjougahara, que é famosa por não falar com ninguém, escorrega na escadaria do colégio e cai nos braços de Koyomi. Ele descobre então que Hitagi não pesa quase nada, desafiando todas as convenções e leis da física. Mesmo tendo sido ameaçado de morte pela garota, Koyomi se oferece para ajudá-la e a apresenta a Meme Oshino, um morador de rua por volta dos 30 anos que o ajudou a deixar de ser vampiro.
