Instead, it is the invention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as the name given to the eastern martial art Sherlock Holmes used against Professor Moriarty in their showdown in &#039;&#039;The Final Problem&#039;&#039;, which is in turn derived from a mis-spelling of the actual eclectic martial art &#039;&#039;bartitsu&#039;&#039;, developed by an Englishman by the name of Edward William Barton-Wright, who based it on his experiences with Japanese martial arts, and was somewhat popular during Doyle&#039;s time.</div>
