  +
  +
The land was basically created to be a graveyard.

  +
What once used to be a rich and fertile hill was now completely barren, boulders scattered everywhere. The fossil-like rubble cackled when the dry air blew upon them, and the deforested hills laid bare, with nobody living there.
God defined the numbers on Wednesday.

  +
It was likely to take a hundred years to revert it back to its original state. The land was that desolate.
God allowed the flow of time on Thursday.

  +
A group of dead remained there in slumber for a long time. That place was truly a naturally formed graveyard.
God looked over at every corner of the world on Friday.

  +
And now, in a corner, a little gravekeeper could be seen shovelling hard.
God rested on Saturday.

  +
Ai was a gravekeeper, who was twelve years old.
Then, on Sunday, God——

  +
Of course, her job was to manage the graveyard.
The place was like a natural cemetery.

  +
With all her might, she kept digging. Putting all her strength into the large shovel, she dug deep into the ground, and used it as a lever to scoop the soil into a basket.
Originally the place was a lush, fertile hill, but at present it was densely covered by overgrowth, with boulders scattered all over. Arid wind blew through the remnants of living beings, a tree stood straight in solitude on the bald hill, not a presence of a single human could be sighted.

  +
At the bottom of that knee-deep hole, Ai let out a sigh. She stretched her back, and looked at the sun that was in the west. Her vision sighted the sun that was about to set, and the howling winds were icy.
Just to restore the forest to eighty percent of its former glory would take over a hundred years. That was how barren the land was.

  +
With a begrudging look, she stared at the setting sun, and after a while, she seemed to have made up her mind as she hopped out from the pit she had just dug. There were many similar pits around her.
In a corner of this piece of land, a gravekeeper was currently waving her shovel with great efforts.

  +
Having taken a look at the new pit that had just joined the other pits, Ai let out a haughty snort,
The job of a gravekeeper, of course, is to maintain the cemetery.

  +
"Job finished!"
The girl continued to try her best to dig, using her entire strength she stab the shovel into the ground, then using it as a lever to scoop up the soil into the basket.

  +
She then carried the tools down the hill. There was a shed and a well at the bottom of the hill, where Ai washed her tools. The tools were used for an entire day, and were completely sullied with mud.
Ai kneeling down on the ground, exhaled out, proceeding to gaze at the western horizon. Reflected from her sight, she could see the sun setting, the breezing wind also began to feel cold.

  +
Ai held down the handle until it creaked, soaking the tools in the water, and then moved a table and brush over before rolling up her sleeves. She got ready to clean up and washed the tools nice and clean. She removed the dirt and the sediments, dried the tools, and then applied oil upon the necessary parts, making sure the large and small baskets, the scythes and the hoe were glittering under the setting sun.
Ai with an expression full of resentment looked at the setting sun, after a while she forced herself to get out of the pit. The surrounding was composed of similar looking graves.

  +
Then, Ai raised her partner.
Taking a glance at the countless graves, Ai muttered to herself.

“Job done!”

Carrying the equipments down the hill. At the foot of the hill was a wooden cabin and a well, there Ai used it to clean the equipments. These tools had been used for a whole day as such it was dirtied black.

Ai using her hands, she soaked the equipments in water, then grabbed a stool and a brush over while rolling up her sleeves. After a good while of preparations, Ai washed the equipments clean. Washing away the sediment, laying it out in the sun, also lubricating various parts of the equipments. She groaned as she swiftly carrying out her tasks, the pail, the sickle and the hoe was sparkling under the rays of light.

At last Ai lifted up her partner.

The shovel.

The shovel.

The shovel was of a simple design; a wooden shaft with a silver metallic head, on the surface patterns of trees and roots were engraved on it, an evidence supporting her claim as a gravekeeper.
+
It was simple in design, with a silver head attached to a wooden stick, which also had patterns of deformed trees and roots engraved at the head, poignantly proving Ai's identity as a gravekeeper.

Ai carefully washed her beloved shovel.
+
And Ai washed the shovel with utmost care.

The well, the wooden cabin, and the equipments were all provided to her by the villagers. In response to their good wills, she treasured them dearly. Finally, she stored the tools in the cabin.
+
Various tools starting from the well to the shed were prepared by the villages. To repay their goodwill, Ai was always very appreciative when using
  +
the facilities. Finally, she kept the tools inside a shed.

What’s left on her hand was just the shovel.
+
The only thing remaining in her hands was the shovel.

  +
"Then everyone, see you tomorrow."
“See you later, everyone.”

Closing the door with a *bang*. The tools sparkled for one last time.
+
The door closed with a thud, and the tools reflected the light for the last time.

After tidying things up, Ai checked her appearance. Touching the cheeks with her hand, she discovered that her face was smeared with mud, her fingers were also dirtied. Sighing, she took off her shoes and shirt, and loosen her hair.
+
Once she was done packing, Ai finally noticed her appearance. Her face was covered in dirt. Her hands and nails were completely black. She sighed, took off her boots and shirts, and undid her hair.

Her beautiful golden hair was like another sun in time of dusk.
+
It seemed as though there was another sun born under the sunset.

  +
That was how bright her golden hair was.
Ai only used the water to clear out the filth sticking to her hair and skin, resulting in it changing from red to a golden luster, comparable to a gem buried in the ground for eons being unearthed.

  +
She washed her hair and skin with just water, and the red light on her hair became golden. Like a gemstone buried in the dirt for tens of thousands of years, the hair glittered once it saw the light of day.
But the action of her washing herself compared to when she washed the tools is much more hasty.

  +
However, Ai was way too casual with how she bathed herself. She showed no less than a tenth of the care that she showed towards her tools. She grumbled about how cold the water was, and ignored the fact that she still had soap bubbles on her as she simply put on her clothes.

  +
The limbs that were as thick as a young tree slipped into the boots and clothes.
Complaining that the water in her mouth was too cold, ignoring the fact that there was still bubbles left over on her body, Ai put on her clothes.

  +
She put on the hanging belt that acted like a bandolier, with a hammer and trowel attached.
First, she put her delicate hands and feet into the gloves and shoes accordingly.

Then tying the iron hammer, spoons, and all sort of tools with her leather belt.
+
Then she wore the coat that had a pendant and round jumprings attached to them.

  +
She combed her hair that was once then into a bun, put on a straw hat, and pulled the strap till her chin.
Next she attached the hook and some other accessories onto her outer coat.

Afterwards, combing her hair, putting on a straw hat, and pulled it down to her chin level.
+
Then, she twirled the shovel around to let the crest face forward, and let it rest upon her shoulder.

  +
Thus, Ai had donned her formal clothing as a gravekeeper.
Finally she picked up the shovel, turned around and flipped it over, then placed it on her shoulder.

  +
And so as the sun quickly set in the distant horizon, Ai went home.
Like this, Ai finished wearing her gravekeeper outfit.

  +
The sun was setting in the far distant mountain. Signaling Ai to go back home.

  +
Today I begin to dig the 47th grave. I hope I will be done by tomorrow.

  +
Ai walked up the hill as she sung a song with an appropriate melody to go along with it. She tapped the shovel on her shoulder, humming away as and when she wanted to, showing no fear as she hopped down the pitch dark hill path. It was impossible for Ai to fall over. She was so familiar with the place, she even knew what birds lived on which trees.
*

  +
Soon after, the path ended, and the night sky and village opened up before her eyes. The night sky and village ripped her vision apart, and beyond the far end of the endless fields, there were lights coming out from houses. A lone thin village was hidden in the valleys.

  +
She stopped humming.
Today the digging of the 47th grave had started, hoped it will be finished by tomorrow——

  +
Ai solemnly cleared her throat, and checked her clothing thoroughly, one by one. Was her shirt tucked in? Were the buckles of her boots loose? Were there any stains on her?
Strolling along the mountain path, she danced around singing happily. She continued to flip over the shovel incessantly causing noises,

humming as she walked towards the pitch-black mountain path fearlessly, and jumping as she advanced forward. There was no way Ai could tumble over because she knew every nook and cranny of this place, even what kind of bird lived on a certain tree.

  +
Finally, she patted herself hard on the head. Then she erased the expression off her face.
Not long after, after finishing her trip, what entered her vision was the scene of the night sky and a village. The never ending fields stretched far and wide, light shining out from the households. A long and narrow sized village was being concealed between the mountain valleys.

  +
A gravekeeper was a guardian of death, an envoy of the dead, a god of death.
Ai had stopped humming.

  +
Ai always felt that there was a need for a gravekeeper to maintain a stoic look on their face.
She then clear her throat, and proceeded to inspect her attire——is the clothes tucked in, are the shoelaces untied, is there any speck of dust on her.

  +
Having made up her mind to maintain some dignity just for today, she started walking towards the village.
Lastly slapping the face to encourage herself, eliminating the expression on her face.

  +
She straightened her back, lowered her eyes, and had let the iron and leather boots make their marks on the dirt as she walked forward. She then placed her shovel on her shoulder like a musketeer, shoving the crest on the head, and that ensured that she gave off a pressuring vibe despite her little size.
Gravekeepers are the protector of the death, the envoy of death, lastly the god of death himself.

  +
At that moment, an old man in the field suddenly lifted his head up. Ai pretended to glance at him nonchalantly, having caught by the corner of her eye. It was the old blacksmith Yuto. He was always creating tools for everyone.
Ai firmly believed that the expression a gravekeeper ought to have is an expressionless face.

  +
The moment Yuto spotted her, he vanished into the other side of the fields. Ai wondered that he must have been startled by her dignified presence, and discreetly did a guts pose.
Making up her resolution to maintain dignity, she then walked towards the village.

  +
“Hey~ everyone! Ai’s back!!”
She straighten her back, lower her line of sight, and with her shoes made up of iron and leather, step by step traces were created on the muddy ground. Carrying the shovel on her shoulder like a gun, exposing the imposing insignia on the shovel's head, though small, she still exuded an oppressive atmosphere.

  +
Suddenly, Yuto returned, and once he yelled, ten villagers or so showed up suddenly. Every single one of them were dressed in patched up garments of shirts and pants, straw hats on their heads. They were the males and females, young and old of the village. Most of the villagers were either wounded, some blind, and some even had defects in their limbs. Even those that did not often come by the fields often were out. The farms in Spring were so bustling.
Suddenly an old man lifted his head up from within the field. Ai pretended to have look by accident, using her eyes to take a quick glance at him. The person in question was of course the blacksmith Yuuto who helped create tools for everybody.

  +
It seemed that everyone was awaiting Ai’s return.
After a brief moment of watching, the head immediately disappeared from the field. Ai thought to herself that he must be frightened by her aura, as such she raised her fist up high representing that of a victor.

  +
Ai curled her lips unhappily, but stopped in her tracks. She then lowered her knees and head slightly, and raised her shovel. In a fluent manner, she recited the words of a gravekeeper,
"Hey~~everybody listens, Ai-chan is back~~"

  +
“Good evening everyone. Today, I shall again pride upon my dignity as a gravekeeper and ensure that everyone has a good life—”
However Yuuto came back quickly, moreover along with his shouting, almost ten villagers sprang out. Each of them wore ragged cloth and trouser, and a straw hat atop of the head. Mixed in the crowd were villagers both young and old, the majority either got wounds all over their bodies, blinded, or handicapped. Those who didn’t tend to the field also appeared, this is how bustling the field is in spring.

  +

  +
But those words were drowned by the voices of the villagers.
Apparently everyone was waiting for Ai’s return.

  +
“Why are you so late!? Didn’t you promise to return before the sun sets?” “Are you hungry?” “Oh yeah. There are some candies left, eat up!” “Here’s some lemonades!”
Ai unhappily twisted the corner of her mouth, nevertheless she immediately stopped in her tracks. Lightly bending her knees and bowing down, then heaving up her shovel, she fluently recited the lines of a Gravekeeper:

  +
She couldn’t maintain her dignity for even a moment. The villagers patted her head without a thought. An old lady served her candies and an old man
“Good evening everyone, today I also have upheld my dignity as a gravekeeper, assisting the living to ensure that they lead a happy life......”

  +
tried to continue her words.

  +
In the middle of the flock, Ai sighed.
But as she finished saying up till that part, her voice was drowned by the villagers’ clamor.

  +
“I don’t want candies or lemonades! I have the food I need to eat at home. Please leave me alone, everyone. Please continue to live your lives!”
“Why are you so late! Didn’t we say you need to come back before dark?” “Are you hungry?” “Right, there’s still some left, eat up!” “There’s lemonade too!”

  +
Ai insisted on her rights as a gravekeeper. However, the villagers merely nodded it away, unwilling to let go of her.
She couldn’t maintain her dignified posture for any moment longer. The villagers casually caressed her head, an old lady一一handing out snacks, and an old man eagerly looking forward to talk to her.

  +
“Hey!!”
Ai sighed while in the middle of the crowd.

  +
Suddenly, a shout was heard from afar. A young man approached them, waving his hand from the other end of the farm.
“I don’t want either snack or lemonade! All the food I eat has already been prepared at home. Please don’t mind me, and continue living your life.

  +
It was Yoki.
Ai strongly asserted the Gravekeepers’ zeal, but the villagers only perfunctorily nodded in accordance, not willing to release her.

“You people!”

  +
At this moment a shout could be heard from afar, a young man was walking up the terracing while waving his hand.

It’s Yohki.

Ai catching sight of the reliable helper, let out a grin.
+
Once she saw the reliable helper showing up, Ai showed a smile.

“What are you all doing? Spoiling Ai! Well well, don’t just crowd around here, please get the work done and go back home!”
+
“You can’t go about pampering Ai here, everyone! Now now, all of you, don’t gather here. Go home once you’re done with work!”

  +
Everyone else had averted their faces with sheepish looks. After all, the notice board last week had the message “Do not feed the gravekeeper candies.” Only for it to turn out like that. Ai stood proudly by Yoki’s side, glaring at the villagers. The people having noticed her glare escaped, and the remaining ones too were cowed into leaving her sight.
Everyone presented at the scene looks guilty. After all on the notice board last week this was posted: “Please don’t feed the Gravekeeper.”

  +
Finally, the two of them were left behind. Ai gave a snort of victory, and lifted her head at Yoki, wanting to share that victory.
Anyhow it had already happened. Ai firmly stood beside Yohki and gazed at the villagers, those who quickly noticed had already fled, for the remains they were too afraid to leave her sight.

  +
“Now then, Ai…no, gravekeeper!”
In the end, there were only the two of them left. Ai triumphantly hummed the she raised her head up to look at Yohki as they laughed happily away.

  +
But Yoki showed the same icy look from the villagers back at Ai.
“Ok, Ai......No. Gravekeeper!”

  +
“Didn’t I tell you not to take the sweets from everyone!! Goodness, you’re a glutton…”
However Yohki donned the same cold eyes like when he previously confronted the villagers as he looked at Ai.

  +
Ai felt that she couldn't pretend not to hear that line. She did voice her objection after all. And so, she lost her temper,
“Haven’t I said not to accept food from the others! Why are you such a glutton......!”

  +
"I beep refill dib tougg happione giv me! Peace dab bad wut uu sad!"
Ai couldn’t overlook this sentence, after all she had clearly rejected already. Therefore she intolerably said:

  +
I did refuse the stuff everyone gave me. Please take back what you said. That was the meaning of the words that nobody understood. For some reason,
“I zid fezusd erefyfing! Fid fitdow ze zsasefent!”

  +
Ai's mouth was stuffed full with sweets.

  +
"..."
I did refuse everything, please withdraw the statement——that’s what Ai trying to say, but nobody understood the meaning because her mouth was stuffed full.

  +
Yoki's icy glare was pricking at her.
“......”

  +
With the perturbed look of a squirrel, Ai was left momentarily frustrated, and in the exact next instant, she swallowed all the food, excusing herself,
Yohiki’s icy cold sight gave her a chill.

  +
"I can't do anything about this."
Ai put up a squirrel-like troubled expression, and in the next moment swallowed down whatever is in her mouth, then continued her excuse:

“This is an unforeseen circumstances.”

......These too?
+
"...And those?"

Perhaps it is because Ai’s funny appearance that he didn’t get angry, Yohki just silently pointed at her hand. On her right was a cup of lemonade, on the left a huge amount of snacks. The body do not lie.
+
Yoki merely pointed at her hands, seemingly unable to be miffed due to how astonishingly hilarious Ai appeared. There was a cup (third one) of lemonade in her right hand, and her left hand was holding a pile of sweets. The body remained honest.

For the shovel, which represents the owner identity as a gravekeeper, was stuck in the ground.
+
And the shovel symbolizing the identity of a gravekeeper remained casually impaled into the ground.

  +
"Seriously! You!"
“You! Really!”

Yohki put both of his hands at waist-level, and loudly scolded. This is the well known “Angry Yohki” that every villagers feared of since it is boring and lengthy.
+
Yoki placed his hands on his waist, and lashed out. That was the 'Yoki's Thunder' that left every villager intimidated. His lectures were long and boring.

But Ai just treated it like a passing wind. In one ear and out the other. In the head was full of unrelated matter. She intently stared at the artistic black eyes and beautiful-shaped ears of his.
+
But Ai merely turned a deaf ear to his words. Even at that point, the words entered from the right and exited from the left as she thought about other matters. She stared at the black eyes that were raised nicely in a scowl and the pretty shaped ears.

Ai truly thought that Yohki is really beautiful, out of the realm of mortal. His black hair and eyes are very ordinary, yet when looking at the person as a whole it gives off the feeling of a brilliant temperament.
+
Ai felt that Yoki's were really pretty, unlike the others. The black hair and eyes were ordinary, but there was a dazzling presence to his appearance as a whole.

  +
"You're pretty, Yoki."
“Yohki is so beautiful.”

  +
"Huh?"
“Huh?”

  +
Yoki, still giving his lecture, was left dumbfounded.
The scolding Yohki couldn’t help but be at a loss for word.

“......Ai, have you listened to what I said?
+
"...Ai, are you listening to me?"

“Yes! When I grow up I will be Yohki’s bride.
+
"Yes! I want to be your bride when I grow up, Yoki."

“You didn’t listen at all!
+
"You aren't listening at all!"

Yohki seemingly having a headache, crouched down and use his hand to knead at his eyebrows. Ai recognizing that she was out of his field of vision, quickly took the opportunity to clear everything in her hands.
+
With a look of someone with a migraine, Yoki knelt down and pressed his hand against his eyes and head. Ai realized that she had left his sight, and hurriedly used the opportunity to clear the stuff in her hands.

Just when the last piece of cracker entered her mouth, another voice could be heard:
+
After she put the final cookie into her mouth, another voice could be heard,

“Hello~~What are the two of you doing~~”
+
"Hey. You two! What are you doing~"

Turning around, a young woman was walking over along the village’s path.
+
Turning her head around, Ai found that a woman was walking down the path surrounding the village, headed towards them.

“Ah, it’s Anna! I’m back!
+
"Ah, it's Anna! I'm back!"

When Ai noticed her, her face was brimmed with smile as she ran over, discarding the dignity of a gravekeeper, the whole body was enveloped in her embrace, dancing around happily.
+
Ai recognized her, and immediately ran over with a beaming look, having completely ignored her dignity as a gravekeeper as she leapt into the latter's
  +
clutches, twirling around as she pulled, laughing away.

The woman is a dazzling person, black hair and black eyes, with heavy makeup applied on her face, along with perfume being sprayed onto her body.
+
It was a dazzling woman. Black hair, black eyes, rich makeup on her gorgeous face, and lots of perfume.

  +
"Nn…!"
“Uh......!”

  +
"Hm, what's wrong?"
“What’s up, Ai?”

Ai who was formerly in her embrace suddenly backed off, pinching her nose and said:
+
Ai, who was in Anna's clutches, suddenly moved away, and pinched her nose, saying, "Anna, you stink."

  +
Upon hearing that, Anna raised her tender eyebrows, and with a smile on her face, she knocked Ai on the head.
“Anna, you stink.”

  +
"A~i~? This is called perfume! You know? It's the smell of perfume! You can't say it stinks!"
Anna knitted her brows upon hearing this, and with a smile on her face, she struck a fist at Ai’s head.

  +
With tears in her eyes, Ai apologized in a hurry. She was not intimidated by the millions of times Yoki told her off, but one punch from Anna was terrifying enough.
“Ai~~? This is just perfume! You understand? It’s the smell of perfume! Don’t call it stink!”

  +
"Well, it is a little too early for you. Adult matters can only be understood when you become one."
Ai with tearful eyes, hurriedly apologized. Even if Yohki says a million word, Ai wouldn’t be scared, on the contrary she would feel scared just from a hit from Anna.

  +
Ai too had something to say about that, but she did not voice out for fear of being hit. She nodded her head, wondering.
“Anyways it’s too early for you, you will understand the ways of adults when you grow up.”

  +
Why the perfume and makeup? Ai personally preferred the normal smell of a person rather than the compressed fragrance of herbs. She preferred the old-fashioned scent of people when they embraced.
Ai also very much agreed on this point, but the fear still lingered in her mind, hence she didn’t say it out, just silently pondering.

  +
With regards to that, she asked the women in the village many times, but all of them merely smiled and passed it off ambiguously "You'll understand soon." Would that day when she would understand come? Ai could not picture herself thinking of it as a good thing.
Why perfume, why makeup? Compared to the fragrance of flora and fauna, Ai preferred humans’ original scent. She likes the kind of smell that could be sensed with that outmoded fashion when people hug each others.

  +
However…

  +
"I'm back, Anna. You're as pretty as always. Oh, you changed perfumes? Nice smell."
She had once asked the women of the villages before, but all of them revealed an awkward smile, saying vaguely: “You will know soon.” Will she be able to understand it in the future? No matter what Ai thinks she would still be unable to understand.

  +
Yoki kissed Anna in a natural manner, praising her perfume scent. Anna in turn showed a delighted look, hugging Yoki's arm.
However......

  +
I see.
“Anna, I am back. You’re beautiful as always. Did you change the perfume? Such a nice smell.”

  +
Ai widened her green eyes, and learned something new.
Yohki habitually kissed Anna, and praised her perfume. Anna let out a smiling face, then hold onto Yohki’s hand.

  +
"Eh!!"
It’s always like this.

  +
And so, driven by her immature jealousy, she jumped in between the lovey-dovey couple.
Ai stretched her green eyes wide open, and finally realized something.

  +
"Hey Ai! You'll ruin the makeup! Hey, what's with you?"
“My goodness!”

  +
"Hey, Anna! I tell you--"
Due to her childish jealousy, this caused her to pounce and interrupted the two flirting.

  +
Ai told Anna of everything that had transpired in the day. How she had started digging the 47th grave, how there was a new owl on the hills, and how
“Wait, Ai! You will ruin my makeup. What’s the matter?”

  +
everyone gave her sweets.

  +
"And I just talked with Yoki!"
“I would like to talk, Anna. I would like to talk with you——”

  +
For Ai, being scolded was the equivalent to a conversation.
Ai told Anna what she had done today. Including the fact that she has started digging all forty-seven graves, finding a new type of owl, furthermore the story about the villagers giving her snacks.

  +
"Oh, what did you two talk about?"
“Afterwards I have a talk with Yohki.”

  +
"I say! Yoki will get married to Ai!"
For Ai, the scolding counted as just a normal conversation.

  +
Yoki immediately spat out air. Anna hissed,
“Oh, what are you guys talking about?”

  +
"...Oh my, you already have me Yoki. Even a little child too…"
“I will tell you, Yohki will marry me!”

  +
"N-no! It's a misunderstanding!"
Yohki, who was at the scene, suddenly choked. Anna then speak in a low tone of voice:

  +
Yoki panicked, and frantically tried to explain. Anna looked back at her husband who was flailing around, and smiled at him, calmly stating, "Just kidding." She then turned to Ai,
“......Aiya, you already have me, not sparing even a kid this little.”

  +
"Ai, you can't marry Yoki. He's already married to me."
“No, definitely not! You are mistaken!”

  +
"Ah, that's right."
Yohki desperately explained in a disorderly manner. Anna looked at her panic-stricken husband, giving him a smile and spoke: “It is just a joke.” Then proceeded to turn her head around and speak to Ai:

  +
"So you understand, don't you? Enough with the foolish words."
“Ai can’t marry Yohki, because Yohki and I are already married.”

  +
"Then how about I get married with you, Anna?"
“Yeah, speaking of which you are right.”

  +
"...I have no idea what you mean by this?"
“About this point do you understand now? Don’t go spouting nonsense.”

  +
"Don't you know, Anna? Other countries do allow people of the same sex to marry…"
“What about I marry Anna?”

  +
"I'm not asking you to show off your knowledge here--well, I guess it. I know you like us, so much that you want to marry us...but there should be better ways to express such a sentiment."
“......I have not got a single clue why you ask me this.”

“You don’t know, Anna? There are some countries that allows same-sex marriage.
+
Anna gulped. There was some strange tension that somehow developed between them.

  +
"You and us...well…"
“I don’t want you to show off your knowledge......anyways, I understand. I know that you like us very much, you like us so much that you want to marry......but the thing is, if you want to express it, there are more appropriate way of saying it.”

  +
Till this point, Anna paused, and lifted her head to look at her husband who was next to her.
Anna gulped. Between the two young people, unknowingly there was a tension building up.

  +
"--Parents and child, I guess?"
“You with us......how should I phrase it......”

  +
"That's not it."
Speaking to this point, Anna stopped her words, and looked at her husband who was besides her.

  +
Ai immediately answered,
“——Like parents with their daughter, right?”

  +
"My mom's already dead. I was the one who dug her grave. Dad's the Man-Eating Toy Hampnie Hambert. That's what mom said. One day, we will meet."
“Wrong.”

  +
Ai said those words with a smile on her face, nary showing a negative emotion. The duo watched her with pained looks.
Ai quickly replied.

  +
"Ai."
“My mother is already dead, originally I am the one who dug her grave. My mother said that my father is the Man-Eating Toy, someday he will come and see me.”

  +
Anna hugged Ai, and the latter was momentarily startled,
Ai said these while laughing, not showing even the slightest negative emotions. The two sorrowfully look at her.

  +
"Ai, your mother is Alfa, just her. And so, your dad will find you one day...but they aren't around now, so for the time being...just for the time
“Ai.”

  +
being, can i be your mother?"

  +
Ai's voice quivered,
Anna hugged Ai, causing her to be shocked and rooted on the spot.

  +
"...Anna, you'll be mama?"
“Ai, your only mother is Alfa, your father will come to find you someday......but they are not here at present, therefore for a while......just for a while, can you let me be your mother?”

  +
Startled, she repeated the words again. 'Mama Anna' those words were like sugar that instantly seeped into her heart.
Anna tremblingly spoke.

  +
"Mama Anna!"
“......Anna as my mother?”

  +
She danced with joy, and leaped into Anna's clutches. Then, she realized something, and turned her head around.
Ai seemingly shocked, repeated the word in her mouth once more. “Anna okaa-san” this word sounds very sweet, and it lightly seeped into her mind.

  +
"Then Yoki is papa!?"
“Anna okaa-san!”

  +
"Looks that way."
Ai happily danced around, and threw herself at Anna, as she realized one thing as she turned her face away.

  +
Papa! Mama!
“Then Yohki is the father?”

  +
Like a child receiving her presents, Ai kept calling Anna mama and Yoki as papa.
“Should be.”

  +
"...Okay, let's go home. I'm hungry."
Father! Mother!

  +
Hungry! Ai yelled, grabbing Anna with her right hand and Yoki with her left, beaming away in the middle as they went off. There was a little house
Ai right now resembled a kid receiving a present, incessantly shouting out Anna okaa-san and Yohki otou-san.

  +
slightly far away from the village, and that was where they were headed back to.

  +
"Oh yeah, Ai…"
“......Well, should we head back home, I am all hungry now.”

  +
Yoki pointed at Ai's hand, asking,
Following up, Ai shouted: “Hungry!” Thereupon she clutched Anna’s hand on the right, Yohki’s on the left, joyfully laughing between the two of them, quickening their steps on their walking to home. A small distance away from the village, there was a small house, that was the place the three of them were returning to.

  +
"Your shovel?"
“Correct, Ai......”

  +
Her right hand held mama, while her left hand held papa, Ai's hands were holding things precious to her, and she had completely forgotten the symbol of a gravekeeper.
Yohki pointed at Ai’s hand and asked:

“Your shovel?”

Prologue[edit]

On Monday, God created the world.

On Tuesday, God distinguished the order and chaos.

On Wednesday, God honed the numerical values.

On Thursday, God allowed the Time to flow.

On Friday, God overlooked every corner of the world.

On Saturday, God rested.

And so, on Sunday, God—

The land was basically created to be a graveyard.

What once used to be a rich and fertile hill was now completely barren, boulders scattered everywhere. The fossil-like rubble cackled when the dry air blew upon them, and the deforested hills laid bare, with nobody living there.

It was likely to take a hundred years to revert it back to its original state. The land was that desolate.

A group of dead remained there in slumber for a long time. That place was truly a naturally formed graveyard.

And now, in a corner, a little gravekeeper could be seen shovelling hard.

Ai was a gravekeeper, who was twelve years old.

Of course, her job was to manage the graveyard.

With all her might, she kept digging. Putting all her strength into the large shovel, she dug deep into the ground, and used it as a lever to scoop the soil into a basket.

At the bottom of that knee-deep hole, Ai let out a sigh. She stretched her back, and looked at the sun that was in the west. Her vision sighted the sun that was about to set, and the howling winds were icy.

With a begrudging look, she stared at the setting sun, and after a while, she seemed to have made up her mind as she hopped out from the pit she had just dug. There were many similar pits around her.

Having taken a look at the new pit that had just joined the other pits, Ai let out a haughty snort,

"Job finished!"

She then carried the tools down the hill. There was a shed and a well at the bottom of the hill, where Ai washed her tools. The tools were used for an entire day, and were completely sullied with mud.

Then, Ai raised her partner.

The shovel.

It was simple in design, with a silver head attached to a wooden stick, which also had patterns of deformed trees and roots engraved at the head, poignantly proving Ai's identity as a gravekeeper.

And Ai washed the shovel with utmost care.

Various tools starting from the well to the shed were prepared by the villages. To repay their goodwill, Ai was always very appreciative when using the facilities. Finally, she kept the tools inside a shed.

The only thing remaining in her hands was the shovel.

"Then everyone, see you tomorrow."

The door closed with a thud, and the tools reflected the light for the last time.

Once she was done packing, Ai finally noticed her appearance. Her face was covered in dirt. Her hands and nails were completely black. She sighed, took off her boots and shirts, and undid her hair.

It seemed as though there was another sun born under the sunset.

That was how bright her golden hair was.

She washed her hair and skin with just water, and the red light on her hair became golden. Like a gemstone buried in the dirt for tens of thousands of years, the hair glittered once it saw the light of day.

However, Ai was way too casual with how she bathed herself. She showed no less than a tenth of the care that she showed towards her tools. She grumbled about how cold the water was, and ignored the fact that she still had soap bubbles on her as she simply put on her clothes.

The limbs that were as thick as a young tree slipped into the boots and clothes.

She put on the hanging belt that acted like a bandolier, with a hammer and trowel attached.

Then she wore the coat that had a pendant and round jumprings attached to them.

She combed her hair that was once then into a bun, put on a straw hat, and pulled the strap till her chin.

Then, she twirled the shovel around to let the crest face forward, and let it rest upon her shoulder.

Thus, Ai had donned her formal clothing as a gravekeeper.

And so as the sun quickly set in the distant horizon, Ai went home.

Today I begin to dig the 47th grave. I hope I will be done by tomorrow.

Soon after, the path ended, and the night sky and village opened up before her eyes. The night sky and village ripped her vision apart, and beyond the far end of the endless fields, there were lights coming out from houses. A lone thin village was hidden in the valleys.

She stopped humming.

Ai solemnly cleared her throat, and checked her clothing thoroughly, one by one. Was her shirt tucked in? Were the buckles of her boots loose? Were there any stains on her?

Finally, she patted herself hard on the head. Then she erased the expression off her face.

A gravekeeper was a guardian of death, an envoy of the dead, a god of death.

Ai always felt that there was a need for a gravekeeper to maintain a stoic look on their face.

Having made up her mind to maintain some dignity just for today, she started walking towards the village.

She straightened her back, lowered her eyes, and had let the iron and leather boots make their marks on the dirt as she walked forward. She then placed her shovel on her shoulder like a musketeer, shoving the crest on the head, and that ensured that she gave off a pressuring vibe despite her little size.

At that moment, an old man in the field suddenly lifted his head up. Ai pretended to glance at him nonchalantly, having caught by the corner of her eye. It was the old blacksmith Yuto. He was always creating tools for everyone.

The moment Yuto spotted her, he vanished into the other side of the fields. Ai wondered that he must have been startled by her dignified presence, and discreetly did a guts pose.

“Hey~ everyone! Ai’s back!!”

It seemed that everyone was awaiting Ai’s return.

Ai curled her lips unhappily, but stopped in her tracks. She then lowered her knees and head slightly, and raised her shovel. In a fluent manner, she recited the words of a gravekeeper,

“Good evening everyone. Today, I shall again pride upon my dignity as a gravekeeper and ensure that everyone has a good life—”

But those words were drowned by the voices of the villagers.

“Why are you so late!? Didn’t you promise to return before the sun sets?” “Are you hungry?” “Oh yeah. There are some candies left, eat up!” “Here’s some lemonades!”

She couldn’t maintain her dignity for even a moment. The villagers patted her head without a thought. An old lady served her candies and an old man tried to continue her words.

In the middle of the flock, Ai sighed.

“I don’t want candies or lemonades! I have the food I need to eat at home. Please leave me alone, everyone. Please continue to live your lives!”

Ai insisted on her rights as a gravekeeper. However, the villagers merely nodded it away, unwilling to let go of her.

“Hey!!”

Suddenly, a shout was heard from afar. A young man approached them, waving his hand from the other end of the farm.

It was Yoki.

Once she saw the reliable helper showing up, Ai showed a smile.

“You can’t go about pampering Ai here, everyone! Now now, all of you, don’t gather here. Go home once you’re done with work!”

Finally, the two of them were left behind. Ai gave a snort of victory, and lifted her head at Yoki, wanting to share that victory.

“Now then, Ai…no, gravekeeper!”

But Yoki showed the same icy look from the villagers back at Ai.

“Didn’t I tell you not to take the sweets from everyone!! Goodness, you’re a glutton…”

Ai felt that she couldn't pretend not to hear that line. She did voice her objection after all. And so, she lost her temper,

"I beep refill dib tougg happione giv me! Peace dab bad wut uu sad!"

I did refuse the stuff everyone gave me. Please take back what you said. That was the meaning of the words that nobody understood. For some reason, Ai's mouth was stuffed full with sweets.

"..."

Yoki's icy glare was pricking at her.

With the perturbed look of a squirrel, Ai was left momentarily frustrated, and in the exact next instant, she swallowed all the food, excusing herself,

"I can't do anything about this."

"...And those?"

Yoki merely pointed at her hands, seemingly unable to be miffed due to how astonishingly hilarious Ai appeared. There was a cup (third one) of lemonade in her right hand, and her left hand was holding a pile of sweets. The body remained honest.

And the shovel symbolizing the identity of a gravekeeper remained casually impaled into the ground.

"Seriously! You!"

Yoki placed his hands on his waist, and lashed out. That was the 'Yoki's Thunder' that left every villager intimidated. His lectures were long and boring.

But Ai merely turned a deaf ear to his words. Even at that point, the words entered from the right and exited from the left as she thought about other matters. She stared at the black eyes that were raised nicely in a scowl and the pretty shaped ears.

Ai felt that Yoki's were really pretty, unlike the others. The black hair and eyes were ordinary, but there was a dazzling presence to his appearance as a whole.

"You're pretty, Yoki."

"Huh?"

Yoki, still giving his lecture, was left dumbfounded.

"...Ai, are you listening to me?"

"Yes! I want to be your bride when I grow up, Yoki."

"You aren't listening at all!"

With a look of someone with a migraine, Yoki knelt down and pressed his hand against his eyes and head. Ai realized that she had left his sight, and hurriedly used the opportunity to clear the stuff in her hands.

After she put the final cookie into her mouth, another voice could be heard,

"Hey. You two! What are you doing~"

Turning her head around, Ai found that a woman was walking down the path surrounding the village, headed towards them.

"Ah, it's Anna! I'm back!"

Ai recognized her, and immediately ran over with a beaming look, having completely ignored her dignity as a gravekeeper as she leapt into the latter's clutches, twirling around as she pulled, laughing away.

It was a dazzling woman. Black hair, black eyes, rich makeup on her gorgeous face, and lots of perfume.

"Nn…!"

"Hm, what's wrong?"

Ai, who was in Anna's clutches, suddenly moved away, and pinched her nose, saying, "Anna, you stink."

Upon hearing that, Anna raised her tender eyebrows, and with a smile on her face, she knocked Ai on the head.

"A~i~? This is called perfume! You know? It's the smell of perfume! You can't say it stinks!"

With tears in her eyes, Ai apologized in a hurry. She was not intimidated by the millions of times Yoki told her off, but one punch from Anna was terrifying enough.

"Well, it is a little too early for you. Adult matters can only be understood when you become one."

Ai too had something to say about that, but she did not voice out for fear of being hit. She nodded her head, wondering.

Why the perfume and makeup? Ai personally preferred the normal smell of a person rather than the compressed fragrance of herbs. She preferred the old-fashioned scent of people when they embraced.

With regards to that, she asked the women in the village many times, but all of them merely smiled and passed it off ambiguously "You'll understand soon." Would that day when she would understand come? Ai could not picture herself thinking of it as a good thing. However…

"I'm back, Anna. You're as pretty as always. Oh, you changed perfumes? Nice smell."

Yoki kissed Anna in a natural manner, praising her perfume scent. Anna in turn showed a delighted look, hugging Yoki's arm.

I see.

Ai widened her green eyes, and learned something new.

"Eh!!"

And so, driven by her immature jealousy, she jumped in between the lovey-dovey couple.

"Hey Ai! You'll ruin the makeup! Hey, what's with you?"

"Hey, Anna! I tell you--"

Ai told Anna of everything that had transpired in the day. How she had started digging the 47th grave, how there was a new owl on the hills, and how everyone gave her sweets.

"And I just talked with Yoki!"

For Ai, being scolded was the equivalent to a conversation.

"Oh, what did you two talk about?"

"I say! Yoki will get married to Ai!"

Yoki immediately spat out air. Anna hissed,

"...Oh my, you already have me Yoki. Even a little child too…"

"N-no! It's a misunderstanding!"

Yoki panicked, and frantically tried to explain. Anna looked back at her husband who was flailing around, and smiled at him, calmly stating, "Just kidding." She then turned to Ai,

"Ai, you can't marry Yoki. He's already married to me."

"Ah, that's right."

"So you understand, don't you? Enough with the foolish words."

"Then how about I get married with you, Anna?"

"...I have no idea what you mean by this?"

"Don't you know, Anna? Other countries do allow people of the same sex to marry…"

"I'm not asking you to show off your knowledge here--well, I guess it. I know you like us, so much that you want to marry us...but there should be better ways to express such a sentiment."

Anna gulped. There was some strange tension that somehow developed between them.

"You and us...well…"

Till this point, Anna paused, and lifted her head to look at her husband who was next to her.

"--Parents and child, I guess?"

"That's not it."

Ai immediately answered,

"My mom's already dead. I was the one who dug her grave. Dad's the Man-Eating Toy Hampnie Hambert. That's what mom said. One day, we will meet."
