Yuuri's Birthday Story - Twitter thread 2021

The King's Restaurant (#王様のレストラン)

A short time ago I gave Greta a stringed instrument because she said she wanted to learn. It was something like a violin for juniors.

When I chose an instrument she might like I thought, 'Presents make the both the giver and the receiver happy, huh?' so for my birthday... uh, celebratory banquet? For that event the next day, I wanted to give all the guests attending a souvenir.

So after sneaking out to the city and choosing and buying many things, we decided to sneak in a late lunch since it was already past noon anyway and went to a place that seemed a little fancy. There weren't many customers and I wasn't wearing my gakuran so I figured it would be fine.

So then what do you think happened there?

Two family members came over to our table and said, "For the guest whose birthday is tomorrow."

Can you believe it!? With prim and proper faces and matching blouses and bowties, the Prince and Princess held violins and played the Happy Birthday Song for me!

While I was wondering when I'd get to hear Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Greta gave a little high five to Wolfram after they finished playing Happy Birthday. [1]

I can't believe it! Even though the world of Dads is vast, have any fathers experienced this?

Thank you, I love you! No matter how many times I say it, it's never enough!

"It would be little embarrassing in front of the guests at the banquet, but I thought here would be okay."

I see. I want to show everyone what you can do and brag about you, but I also feel like I want to keep this momentous first performance all to myself.

But then I thought, "But she isn't nervous in front of the people in the restaurant?" and looked around...

The waitress who brought herbed water was Gurie-chan, the waiter standing there in a bad mood was Gwendal, Gunter was in the kitchen crying while holding a knife, Miss Anissina was there stirring a pot (dangerous!), and all the people at the other tables were close friends from the castle.

What's going on here!?

"I dunno. I was just told to invite you out to lunch." [2]

Because after that we privately had a lot of noisy fun and ate a full course of the restaurant's and the suspicious Poison Lady's food, my official birthday celebration the next day ended up a battle against sleep.

But that's another story.

  1. Possible typo in the original text. Original text read as Greta wondering when she'd get to listen to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but upon multiple re-readings (because it didn't make sense as written) I have concluded it was probably a typo and used the above translation of Yuuri wondering. But, making note of it here just in case.
  2. The speaking style here in the original Japanese lines up with Conrad's even though he is never mentioned directly.
