17. Alazon's shadow[edit]

FX:*horse neighs*

Yelshi: The sun has set, Maou and ... the king of Shou Shimaron.

Yuuri: We're accepting the exchange. I'm going over there now.

Yelshi: And Sara?

Yuuri: We do not have the authority to make Saralegui accept this.

Yelshi: What?

Yuuri: We, the mazoku, do not have the authority to decide the future course of Majesty Saralegui as we wish. If you want to meet that king at any cost, you should negotiate with Shou Shimaron directly.

Yuuri (monologue): The truth is that Saralegui is not here anymore. He disappeared into the night. We're not sure whether he'll go along with it or not, but after making us a promise, he went to a certain place[1].

Yelshi: Where did he go?

Yuuri: Who knows....?

Yelshi: You, bastard...

FX:*Yelshi leaves *

Venera: Oh my, my... the Emperor lost his cool, huh? He went back...

Yuuri: *sighs* I wonder what our chance to win is...?

Venera: *chuckles* Is this the first time you fight with no chance of winning?

Yuuri: No way. That's what I've been doing my whole life up until now[2].

FX: *footsteps*

Wolfram: Yuuri. Are you planning to go there alone?

Yuuri: Uhm... Believe it or not ... You wouldn't want to come with me, right? [3]

Wolfram: If you were to ask me, I'd go with you to the end of the world.

Yuuri: *whispers to himself* K...Keigo... Is he angry[4]...? *to Wolf* I'm just kidding. I wouldn't make you come with me and become a hostage.

Wolfram: If I could be useful to your Majesty, it would be an honor.

Yuuri: Uh... Thank you. But I don't think that would be right, your sacrifice should be for the nation...

Wolfram: It's the same thing.

Yuuri: No, it's n...

FX: *Wolfram punches Yuuri in the stomach*

Yuuri: Ggh! Wolf... what... (are you doing)? *drops*

Wolfram: Forgive me...

Yuuri: *cough* *cough* (In the novels: It's so painful he starts crying)

Adalbert: Would you look at that... Since I let the third son do it, you ended up like this. If I had done it, you would have fainted with one blow to the stomach.

Yuuri: Why...?

Yuuri: (thinking) Why are Conrad and Wolfram going to where Yelshi is?

Conrad: Emperor of Seisakoku! I will now bring you His Majesty Yuuri to you.

FX: *Novel 15's image of Conrad and Wolfram*

Yuuri: Wh...?

Adalbert: I wonder if this will work. From behind he looks just like you, but if they see the eye and hair color which he's hiding, he'll be discovered right away.

Venera: We can only pray that the wind doesn't blow, huh?

Yuuri: *struggle* Let me go, Adalbert. I have to go...

Adalbert: Hey, hey. You can't go. In the first place, did you think that those two were just going to watch their beloved king go out there? If that's the case, then you are too naive.

Yuuri: What the hell...! Crap! I didn't ask them to do this to hide me ! Say, Hazel... this is an insurrection, right?

Venera: Unfortunately your Majesty, in my opinion, this is nothing but self-sacrifice.

Yuuri: *whispers* I didn't ask anything about Christianity[5]...

FX: *horse neighs*

Yelshi: And you are?

Conrad: I'm Weller, an envoy from Big Shimaron. I, as someone from his suzerain state, had the responsibility to supervise the actions of Majesty Saralegui during this trip.

Yelshi: In other words?

Conrad: In the place of the Shou Shimaron government, we, the country of Big Shimaron, wish to demand the return of the king to his land. If you would understand my position in Big Shimaron, you'd agree that a conversation with me would be much more beneficial, your imperial majesty.

Yuuri: What is he talking about?

Adalbert: He has been robbed of a fine status, you know? Haven't you heard about it?

Yuuri: No, I don't know anything about it.

Adalbert: If times were better, he'd be a prince.

Yuuri: You mean, because of Cherie-sama...?

Adalbert: No, it's not that. Originally, the ancestors of Weller were the kings of one of the territories of Shimaron. But then, during the era of his father, he left the country. For you people, he was the excellent Mazoku soldier, the second son of the previous Maou, right? But for the people of Big Shimaron he is something different. In that continent, there are no ancestors left from that family.

Yuuri: That means...

Adalbert: He's absolutely treated like a Savior[6]. Almost like in a religious way. Well... I guess that here, I have a status that makes people call me a Savior too, huh?

Yuuri: ... But then, the current king of Big Shimaron, Berard, thinks poorly of him...?

Adalbert: That's a complicated issue. If he is seen as hostile, he will arouse the people who revere the Weller family. Having said that, if he unconditionally approves of him, the authority of the current government will be hurt. That's why Berard received Lord Weller Conrad as a friend. But as a result, a dangerous rumor started to spread.

Yuuri: Dangerous? No way... it's not a plan to assassinate Conrad, right?

Adalbert: No, it's not. The rumor says that friends of the deserted house who had been quiet up until now, are secretly starting to make their move. Those people are actually starting to connect underground.

Yuuri: That's (unbelievable)...

Yuuri (thinking): Conrad, in order to sow what sort of seed did you go to Big Shimaron?

FX:*footsteps*

Conrad: Your Highness...

Murata: Ugh... uh... *gasp* Why? Why are you two here?!

Conrad: Your Highness...!

Murata: You can't! Lord Weller and Lord von Bielefeld can't come here!

Yelshi: What?

Wolfram: Why...?

Murata: Your Majesty! Your Imperial Majesty of Seisakoku! Don't allow yourself to be tricked ! These two have no political power or fortune! Don't exchange me for these two!

Murata (from where Yuuri is): You cannot make a deal with them!

Yuuri: Murata?

Adalbert: What is he doing? Why is he being so violent all of a sudden?

Yuuri: Ah! The box... That's right !

FX:*Yuuri frees himself from Adalbert's grip*

Yuuri: OVER HERE! Over here, Yelshi! I'm over here!!!

FX: *runs to where they are*

Wolfram: Yuuri!

Conrad: Your majesty!

Yuuri:*pants* Whose plan was this?

Conrad: Your majesty...

Wolfram: It was mine.

Yuuri: How dare you?! *grabs him* And what was the meaning of that punch to the stomach?! WHAT?! Divorce?! Second marriage (to someone else)?!

Wolfram: ...Love and respect...

Yuuri: Liar. I'll get you for this[7]...

FX: *Lets go of Wolf, turns his back on them*

Wolfram: ...!

Yuuri: You two go back.

Conrad: But, your Majesty...

Yuuri: Did I stutter? Your imperial majesty, I'm sorry for the ruckus.

Murata: This is wrong, your imperial majesty! The exchange should be for your older brother, right? Why are you taking Shibuya!? Why did you have to involve Yuuri? A fight between brothers should be solved among brothers. Everyone else does it like that!

Yuuri: It's fine, Murata. It's alright... It's as I had originally planned. Well, Yelshi... I want to complete the hostage exchange.

Yuuri (monologue): Murata returned safely to our comrades' side. On the other hand, Yelshi , the person who commands the army of living deads, took me to their troop headquarters.

FX: *footsteps*

Yuuri: This is... Yelshi, what do you intend to do bringing me here?

FX:*Yelshi caresses the box*

Yelshi: *chuckles* This is... mother's precious box...

Yuuri: Your mother's?

Yuuri(monologue): Inadvertently I saw that behind the box, there was a chair similar to that of a general and on it sat a lady. Because of a VEIL similar to that worn by brides I couldn't see her face well, but she was wearing a fine dress like that of a person of high social standing.

Yelshi: Mother ... told me... about the box of miracles...

Yuuri (thinking): As I imagined, she seems to be his mother... But, she won't move an inch... Maybe she's sleeping.

Yuuri: This is not a box of miracles, it's a box of catastrophes.

Yelshi: It bestows life, it's a box of miracles.

Yuuri: I'm telling you, this is not such a friendly thing. Throw it away, right now!

Yelshi: No, this is... a precious treasure.

Yuuri: Ehhh? You sure are peaceful people, huh? You don't even know the true character of the box. In that respect, your big brother Saralegui sure is smart, huh? He knows what type of power is in that box.

Yelshi: Saralegui... doesn't know.

FX: *magic, Yuuri can hear Yelshi's thoughts through the ring*

Yuuri: Ouch,ouch... there it is... the ring...

Yelshi (thinking): That's impossible! That almost dead person being smarter than me, that's impossible!

Yuuri: Ehhh? But he was sent to your father's country because he was smarter than you, right? Because even as a child he was so smart, that he could jeopardize your future.

Yelshi: What? I don't understand ...

Yuuri: You're feigning ignorance. No matter how much you lie, I won't fall for it, Yelshi.

Yelshi: That wasn't the reason. I've heard it so many times. My mother told me everything.

-- Flashback --

FX: *door opens and closes*

Yelshi (as a child): *cries* Mother...! *runs to Alazon*

Alazon: What is it, Yelshi? Did you have a scary dream?

Yelshi: I'm sad ... Ne... Why? Why did you send Sara away?

Alazon: I'm sorry... you're alone because of me, but you have to be strong. Saralegui can't come back from your father's country.

Yelshi: Why? Why is that?

Alazon: I will tell you, Yelshi. It's because I don't want that child to die.

Yelshi: Die?

Alazon: That's right. When Saralegui was born, he did not live. That's why he received life... from that box of miracles.

Yelshi: The box of .... miracles?

Alazon: In the royal tomb, there is a box of miracles that can give new life to the dead. I hugged both of you and crossed the tunnels by horse. I asked God and our ancestors to give him new life.

Yelshi: Was Sara... dead?

Alazon: That's right. If it wasn't for that box, your big brother would not have lived.

Yelshi: But now he's all well, right?

Alazon: Of course! I believe that he is... But you know, Yelshi? Since I prayed to that box, Saralegui was indelibly stained with the shadow of death.

Yelshi: The shadow ... of death....

Alazon: That's right. That's why, I had no choice but to make him leave Seisakoku. If he would have stayed, eventually Saralegui would have been caught by the box. The shadow of death would have rapidly progressed and hurt that child.

Yelshi: *sobs* I don't understand... I don't understand, mother!

Alazon: If I would have called that child my son, he would have probably never been able to run away.

Yelshi: Why wouldn't he had been able to run away?

Alazon: Yelshi, take a good look at my body. This leg has completely turned to stone. The blood has dried up, the skin is ice, I won't ever be able to take a step.

Yelshi: Mother...

Alazon: Eventually in a distant future, my entire body is going to turn to stone. This is the box's silent voice. Without using the correct key, with only my will to bring my son back to life, I used the power of the box and god, angry, caused me this torment.

Yelshi: That's... No! I don't want you to die, mother! *cries*

Alazon: You can't cry forever, you have to become strong, Yelshi. You have to make up for your big brother's strength and intelligence and become the ruler of Seisakoku. That's right... to replace this mother of yours...

-- End of flashback --

Yuuri: That just now...

Yelshi: The box.... did it.

Yelshi (thinking): Fool. The one who doesn't know anything about the box is you. Since mother feared that the box would take his life, she sent my big brother to a another country. It was decidedly not because he was smarter than me !

Yelshi: Right, mother?

Yuuri: Huh?

Yelshi (thinking): This time for sure, the box will give you life. I will exchange the life of my weakening mother for another life.

Yuuri: Wait, Yelshi. Stop it! Don't remove the VEIL.

Yelshi: Mother, say hello... to the king of Shin Makoku!

FX:* lifts Alazon's veil*

References[edit]

  1. In the novels you already know where he went at this point so I'm telling you: He went to get the help of the equestrian tribe and said he'd be back with as many of them as possible.
  2. I find it interesting that he didn't say "Since I got to this world", but "my whole life up till now". In the novels too.
  3. I'm being too literal here and it sounds weird in English, but Yuuri doesn't want to say "believe it or not I want you to come with me". Instead he asks a question in the negative form so that Wolfram can easily reply with a positive answer if he doesn't want to go. It's a way of giving someone an easy way out of what you're asking them to do. Also, it made a little more sense in the novels where there was more hesitation before the second phrase.
  4. Keigo: formal Japanese language. Wolfram never talks to Yuuri using keigo. In the novels Yuuri also calls Wolf Lord von Bielefeld while they're having this conversation. That's how you know shit's about to hit the fan.
  5. The word Hazel uses for "self-sacrifice" can also mean "martyrs".
  6. I should have probably picked 'Messiah' instead of 'Savior', but in the novels, Yuuri used that word to talk about someone who saves a (baseball) game when they were talking about Adalbert's new position, so I picked savior. Oh, well... it's exchangeable for Messiah, remember that.
  7. Aww... in the novels Yuuri is so angry he wants to headbutt Wolfram. So, either these two got married and Takabayashi forgot to mention it, or Yuuri thinks of Wolf and himself as a married couple. Because rikon(離婚)= divorce, and saikon=remarrying (someone else), are words you use once you're married, and can't be used in any other situations. There is a term for breaking off an engagement, konyakuhaki (婚約破棄, yes, it's a term not a sentence), but he doesn't say that. Yuuri's lines are the same here as in the novel and mean precisely what I just said. Also, the word Wolfram uses for 'love and respect' keiai(敬愛), doesn't mean romantic love, that would be renai(恋愛), so it's the love you feel for someone you respect. But Yuuri doesn't believe him, so... I wonder what he believes. A few more things: "How dare you?!" also translatable as: "You piece of shit". And "I'll get you for this" is literally "I'll remember this...", but is usually used as a threat.
