"The longsword in his hands slashed like flowing water, using momentum to block his adversaries’ spears, then cut off each of the horses’ front legs sword by sword." Cut legs sword by sword?

"Apart from Minerva, Gilberto’s swordsmanship underwent rigorous training as well, so the feats that he accomplished were all backed up by true skill. As for Paola, she definitely had her own merits as well." Is this meant to say that his swordmanship demonstrated training, or that he had undergone training?
