To Aru Majutsu no Index (とある魔術の禁書目録, Toaru Majutsu no Indekkusu, A Certain Magical Index) est une série de light novels écrite par Kazuma Kamachi (鎌池 和馬) et illustrée par Kiyotaka Haimura (灰村 キヨタカ). Elle est publiée chez ASCII Media Works, sous Dengeki Bunko.

La série principale est terminée en 24 tomes, dont 2 tomes d’histoires secondaires. Une suite, To Aru Majutsu no Index : New Testament (新約 とある魔術の禁書目録, Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Indekkusu) est en cours.

J.C. Staff a réalisé toutes les adaptations animées de la franchise. Une première saison de 24 épisodes a été diffusée d'Octobre 2008 à Mars 2009. Une seconde saison a été diffusée d'octobre 2010 à Mars 2011. Un film, intitulé To Aru Majutsu no Index : The Miracle of Endymion (とある魔術の禁書目録 エンデュミオンの奇蹟, To Aru Majutsu no Index : Endymion no Kiseki), a été diffusé en Février 2013.

Le manga et spin-off To Aru Kagaku no Railgun (とある科学の超電磁砲, A Certain Scientific Railgun) a été adapté en une première saison de 24 épisodes diffusée d'Octobre 2009 à Mars 2010, un OAV en Octobre 2010 et une seconde saison d'Avril à Septembre 2013.

Synopsis

To Aru Majutsu no Index se déroule dans la Cité Scolaire, une ville académique technologiquement avancée située à l'Ouest de Tokyo et faisant des recherches sur les étudiants développant des pouvoirs surhumains, plus communément appelés "espers". Toutefois, dans ce monde de pouvoirs surnaturels développés scientifiquement, existe dans l'ombre un monde magique et occulte, connecté aux institutions religieuses du monde entier.

Kamijou Touma, un garçon malchanceux qui s'avère être l'un des étudiants de la Cité scolaire, possède en sa main droite un mystérieux pouvoir appelé "Imagine Breaker", une capacité lui permettant de neutraliser n'importe quel pouvoir surnaturel, qu'il soit magique ou psychique. Un jour, il découvre une jeune fille appelée Index suspendue à la rambarde de son balcon. Elle est une nonne de Necessarius, une branche secrète de l'Église Anglicane Anglaise, et son cerveau contient l'Index des Livres Interdits (Index Librorum Prohibitorum), regroupant 103'000 grimoires magiques que l'Église a retirés de la circulation. Leur rencontre le mènera à rencontrer d'autres personnes liées aux mondes secrets de la science et de la magie.

Le pouvoir inhabituel de Touma le place au centre des conflits liés aussi bien aux espers de la Cité Scolaire issus de la science qu'aux magiciens. Tandis que Touma tente d'aider et de protéger ses amis, il découvre que les gens qu'il connaissait ne sont pas forcément ceux qu'ils semblaient être et commence à attirer l'attention aussi bien des magiciens que des espers, tout en cherchant à percer les secrets de la Cité Scolaire et d'Index.

Synopsis [Non traduit] : The Third World War that the final member of the Roman Catholic Church's secret organization God's Right Seat Fiamma sparked from Russia has been ended by the efforts of Kamijou Touma. With that, he vanished. With the Magic side regrouping, the Sabbath for their followers has arrived.

In the headquarters of the Science side, Academy City, the strongest Level 5 esper, Accelerator has washed his hands of the "Darkness". Along with Last Order and Misaka WORST, he passes both noisy and gentle, calm days. There is no sign of GROUP.

Skill-Out's Level 0 Hamazura Shiage, with the negotiating materials he acquired in Russia that pertain to the Darkness, has returned and formed the new ITEM with Kinuhata, Takitsubo, and Mugino and began their operations. Peace has come to the hands of the alumni of the city's dark side at last.

However, a new evil "Freshman" appears before them.
