I'm trying to remove as much gratuitous Japanese from the English translation as possible. Writing Japanese names in Western order is consistent with that principle.

For people who are already used to reading LN in BT, reversing the order like that is just confusing.

My target audience is readers who are fluent in (American) English but have no particular experience with reading Japanese. It is specifically and emphatically not limited to people who are already used to Baka-Tsuki conventions (including the stronger presence of Japanese text elements which are part of those conventions), to avoid pigeonholing the translation into that particular subset of readers.

Well, I sorta agree with you, and while I'm not telling you to change it, I feel that keeping Japanese order will help bring people closer to understanding the Japanese text better and join in on the Western Otaku culture we have, ya know.

Also, in this series, how names are shown show the difference in culture... I mean, Ikki is called Kurogane Ikki (family name 1st while given name last) while Stella is called Stella Vermillion (reverse of Ikki), it shows a bit of the difference in culture between the characters themselves. So it'd make some readers used to it more comfortable while at the same time, allowing others to view some of the culture differences between them and the characters. So in a way, it'd help them get more used to other Japanese stuff and bring them closer to our own Otaku culture...

It'd help them understand and be more comfortable with other works too. And it won't be a willy-nilly kinda translation since explaining how they are difference in the notes could also help educate the peoples (and we could show the Kanji and romanji in the notes section to help them understand things better). I mean, translating a work isn't just bringing the Japanese work to others, but other to the Japanese work as well.....

Of course, this is just my opinion and I don't mean to offend, but I think keeping the ordering and explaining why the names are ordered the way they are could bring in the people who don't have the experience and give them a new experience to enjoy.

My goal is to tell this specific story to English readers, and pushing English readers to understand elements of Japanese text is unnecessary for that goal. Getting readers to join in otaku culture is... also not something I'm trying to do.

The translation should be "not willy-nilly" by staying focused on telling its story, not by diffusing readers' attention across multiple tangential concerns like teaching them a foreign culture or new language, et cetera, unless those things specifically and substantively add to the story. If they only help readers better understand Japan or some other light novel or so forth, they're hardly worth keeping for their own sake.

Well, again, it's just my opinion... but in this story specifically, since the 2 main characters are from 2 different cultures, showing the order of the naming difference adds to the understanding of the experience... I mean, in a way, that's a big thing how the naming order seems to matter in some ways. Specifically in how Stella and Ikki seem to be separated by their class and culture. And after knowing how in Japan, the order of the names are reversed, I'd feel that most readers would catch on and wouldn't be bothered once they understood that and all. I mean, Ikki is Japanese, so his name being in an order of how his culture does it doesn't take away the enjoyment from the English readers.

Again, this is just an opinion and all, but isn't it common knowledge that different places have slight different customs, so rather than taking away from it, I'd feel it'd just add on....

But In the end, it wouldn't matter cause for the people who prefer eastern order, they could just flip it on their Epub and PDF versions, so it shouldn't matter much.... in the long run, I'd feel it wouldn't make a difference for which ever order is put in enjoyment of western readers or anything.

i cant even tell because a small bit of volume 3 chapter 2 was uploaded recently. either way based on the update logs it seems it gets updated ever couple months the last major one was beginning of december. Either way i am really looking foward to volume 3 getting finished.
