Offfooo...not spoilers. Wherever you read about "Excaliber", it describes it as above -- "cutting through steel like butter(?), ever shining, a majestic sword" and what not. 'with the hero gone, the sword has lost its power' = without King Arthur around, the sword has lost its power. Exactly what the words mean. This is how Campione's author has chosen to portray the sword, so that's why your question isn't really a question, it's already been answered. There is no mistake in the translation.
