===Part 13===

Roslynica seemed to have shrunk.

She withered under the repeated questions from the witches in thick armor.

“(Good grief. Is this another problem with sealing away their goodness and conscience for their job? If you want to play at being keepers of the peace, the least you could do is learn how to interact with children.)”

“Mh. Do you have a problem with the highly efficient methods we Benandanti utilize to-”

“Outta the way, workaholic. What are you, an incompetent career police detective?”

“A...what?”

This wasn’t working, so Yagoro approached from behind, shoved Nancy (who was ordinarily quite nice) and the others aside, and tried speaking to the girl himself. Working as a teacher had taught him the right attitude to take with children.

“Are you hurt, Roslynica?

“N-no, I’m...fine.”

“I see. Then how about we get out of here?”

That was all the tutor boy said.

The threat was gone. Rayon Risoniphimil wouldn’t be able to cause any more trouble. If Yagoro used the evidence Roslynica had found to get the Benandanti to act, the Spanish Fly Indulgence Bank would be history. The victims could even get their money back.

But Roslynica still felt like she had a gaping hole in the center of her chest.

None of this changed the fact that she couldn’t use any real magic.

She had been taught the harsh lesson that the most she could hope for was to be protected by others.

“…”

Her dream was over.

She had caused trouble for so many people and she had taken away all the money the squatter’s district people had gathered for her. She didn’t have a Formula Broom and – worse – she was a boy. She wasn’t like Viocia who had a broom. Only the witches who borrowed their power could use magic in this world, so getting into Maleficium seemed truly impossible.

The walls had been torn down and the world was opened up around her. But no matter how hard she tried, she could never become a witch like those Benandanti who swept up all forms of misfortune and tragedy with their brooms.

Head hanging, little Roslynica bit her lip hard.

But then something occurred to her.

(Wait…)

“Um, what about you?”

“Huh?”

“I mean, only girls can become witches in this world, right? And you’re supposed to need a Formula Broom to use magic. But then...what did you just do? You used real witchcraft even though you don’t have a broom...even though you’re a boy!”

Roslynica raised her voice in utter bafflement.

In response, Viocia looked confused and armored Nancy held a hand to her forehead. Myousou Yagoro was already on his way out and he didn’t even turn back.

But that ''boy'' did respond in a casual, nonchalant way.

He spoke the words that were like salvation itself to the little witch in training.

“''None of that means I can’t use magic.''”
