Archangel: “Archangel here!”

Lesser Demon: “Lesser Demon too.”



Archangel: “I know this is breaking our own rules already, but our meta talk will be intruding on the main story for a second. Today’s topic is the magic types that tend to trip up beginners!”

Lesser Demon: “The goddess is trying her best to explain for younger Gilbezos (while secretly reveling in getting to play the tutor role), but she’s doing a terrible job of it. We’ll break it down into something more digestible.”

Archangel: “To begin with, there are seven magic types.”



Fire, water, wind, earth, other, light, shadow.



Lesser Demon: “They also correspond to the seven days of a week on the calendar.”

Archangel: “The order shows that fire is strong against water, water is strong against wind, etc.”

Lesser Demon: “The other type can be confusing. It’s hard to picture what the magic can do based on the name alone.”

Archangel: “Because it’s an abbreviation for ‘other forms of natural disaster and destruction’.”

Lesser Demon: “Just think of it as the type responsible for locust swarms, getting lost in a looping cave, crops being destroyed by salting a field, and things like that.”

Archangel: “But don’t assume all natural disasters belong to the other type. Volcanic eruptions are fire type, lightning is shadow type, and hail is water type. The other type is only ‘other forms’ of natural disaster and destruction.”

Lesser Demon: “Lightning is shadow type because of how, y’know, thunder will rumble whenever something ominous happens. But the end of the week loops around to the start, so light is strong against shadow and shadow is strong against fire.”

Archangel: “Because not even the fire created by human civilization can conquer the shadows and even those shadows are destroyed by light. It’s a mythological interpretation☆”

Lesser Demon: “Why do you sound so delighted?”

Archangel: “How about you try reading your name aloud real quick? Anyway, these type interactions are only rough approximations. Not all monsters in the sea are weak to wind magic.”

Lesser Demon: “Shirayuri’s Hyper Golem was made of stone, but her weakness was water. That’s because you can use skills to give yourself some resistance to your type weakness.”

Archangel: “Physical attacks also have types: slash, impact, stab, shoot, compress, break, etc. Compress includes tying and constricting and break includes bending things until they break, so a figure-four leglock counts as both.”

Lesser Demon: “This is crucial information for you masochists out there. A single whip can delight you with several different types, so learning them all could be your ticket to true happiness. These types aren’t strong or weak to each other, so they’re only used for more general ideas like ‘this monster can withstand slashing attacks, but not impacts’.”

Archangel: “Oh, right. I nearly forgot. Magic attacks generally can only harm whoever you have decided for yourself is an ‘enemy’. So you can launch an AoE magic attack during a chaotic battle without worrying about hitting any of your allies.”

Lesser Demon: “But on the other hand, friendly fire is possible with non-attack magic and physical attack skills. Hee hee. So if you know the rest of your party can’t stand you and your tough talk is constantly getting the others into trouble, you might want to watch your back.”
