1) It would be better for him not to know = maybe it would be better not to ask certain things to Hanekawa. He was not sure he would still be able to remain his friend if he knew. (at least I can receive some feedback)

2) yeah, it was wordplay. 　的外れ and 論外 (same kanji). The distinction between the two concepts is subtle: the first word implies missing the point, the second word implies "being outside the argument", meaning you cannot talk your way out, you simply cannot do it. In the end I changed the latter with "outside the argument", it flows better.

1) Ah sorry, yeah, it means fooled. To be more exact, it refers to how you lead cows around using the ring in their noses, so you could say it's about making her do what he wanted her to do without her knowing it.
