“Anyway, the amount of preparation needed for the terraforming this time was kind of overwhelming.”

“There was a lot of mythology talk too. Really, it felt like we were taking a step into the world of archeology, but that’s a necessary step when you investigate mythology far enough.”

<Mythologies contain pieces of ancient regional history and human history. Aspects not mentioned in one mythology can be guessed at from similar elements in the mythologies of the surrounding regions and knowing the politics and other circumstances at the time can help clarify a lot of things. You could write it off as an ‘untold mystery’, but these things are needed if we are to delve deeper instead.>

“There have been a lot more books on this kind of thing lately, haven’t there? Books on mythology…or more often, fantasy stories that include mythology.”

<If you ask me, it was video games that led to the acceptance of the fantasy genre in Japan. 1984 was a real turning point. Tower of Druaga’s arcade version came out in July and Hydlide’s PC-88 version came out in December, but the adventure gamebook The Warlock of Firetop Mountain came out that December too, bringing gamebook games into the mix as well.>

“Then in ’85, the arcade version of Dragon Buster came out in January and the Tower of Druaga’s Famicom version came out in August. And PCs were having a good year too with Xanadu in October, Mugen no Shinzou II in November, and both Hydlide II and a port of Wizardry in December.”

“Then Dragon Quest I came out in May of ’86, but this really shows how much groundwork there was leading up to it!”

“We didn’t mention it in the book’s opening, but Fujimi Shobo started up the label Fujimi Dragon Book in ’85. Monster Collection, released in October of ’86, was probably their representative book in the early days.”

“Anyway, the background music this time was Takano Hiroshi-san’s Besten Dank. The song has a slight water theme and the lyrics are actually kind of troubling, but the overall song has a positive vibe.”
