The purpose of this page is to lay down the guidelines by which the editors and translators will fulfil their respective roles for this project. Guidelines are required to create a consistent reading format thoughout all the novels, to ensure the best Spice and Wolf experience for readers. This page will be updated to include all terms, formats notes and other points for this project, it should always reflect the joint agreement of all parties. This does not mean the Translators will have to take it upon themselves to apply the guidelines. This guide will mainly affect Editors, and we stress to Translators not to take it upon themselves to change their habits or preferences in any way that will hamper their progress. At the same time, these are guidelines, not rules carved in stone, and no one will be crucified for failing tofollow them. The idea of these guidelines is that all the work will eventually converge on them after enough editing. It is strongly advised that if you have any issues with these accepted points, that you please add your voice to the Discussion on the Talk page, or post a message on the forums, before you edit. == '''Spice and Wolf Series Format Guidelines''' == This page is a style guide for the Spice and Wolf Project. The consensus of many Editors & Translators formed the conventions described here. Translated chapters should heed these rules. Feel free to update this page as needed, but please use the discussion page to propose major changes. == '''Translators''' == *Work will be divided by Chapters per Volume *You are required to register which Chapters you wish to work on *Registration is on a "First Come, First Served" please register your intended chapters on the [http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Spice_%26_Wolf:Registration_Page Registration Page] *The maximum number of chapters you are recommended to work on is no more than half of any given volume *Maximum number of volumes you may be active on is one == '''Editors''' == *Editors are required to justify any major edits in the related chapter Talk Page which could be considered disputable *Always fill in the summary box on all non-minor edits *Editors are advised to communicate with Translators in the case of any ambiguity or questions ==== Anonymous Editors ==== *Anonymous Editors are Welcome, but please note that any large edits, which are considered further then grammar and spelling corrections, must be justified in the Discussion page beforehand *Anonymous Editors be aware that your edits will be reverted if you have not complied to the above points, in order to prevent perceived vandalism *Registration is free, and we strongly advised that you do, in order to acknowledge contributions *As a point of order, always fill in the summary box after all edits == '''Dialogue and Narration Syntax''' == *Unless specified otherwise (e.g. Horo), all text is to be standard American English *The story is told from a third-person past perspective, and it will remain this way in English *All dialogue is non-inline, ie: every quotation takes up its own line *As this is effectively Europe in the Middle Ages, Japanese name honorifics are not to be used ==== Horo Speech Conventions ==== Horo's speech will '''not''' be in old English. Her dialect in the novels is closer to Okayama-ben or Oosaka-ben than Edo-era Japanese. That is to say, the differences are mainly pronouns, verb endings, and gobi. She is perfectly intelligible to a modern Japanese speaker, whereas Shakespearean English is not. Hence the following conventions: *No contractions. "It is", "I am", and so on, will replace "It's" and "I'm". This is to represent her slightly aloof style of speech *No slang or colloquial phrases. While it may make sense to use common English phrases for other characters in order to get the best translation from the source, in the case of Horo, she uses very little of it to begin with, and keeping her language to well-established phrases helps instill the "sage" feeling we are going for. == '''Naming Conventions''' == <table> <tr> <th>People</th> <th>Places</th> <th>Trade names</th> <th>Currencies</th> </tr> <tr> <td valign="top"> *γ―γ©γγγγ¬γ³γΉ: Craft Lawrence *γγ: Horo *γ€γ¬γ€: Yarei *γ¨γΌγ¬γ³γγγ: Elendott *γΌγΌγ¬γ³: Zelen *γ―γ€γΊ: Weiss </td> <td valign="top"> *γγΉγγ¨: Pasroe *γ¨γΌγ¬γ³γ: Yorent *γγ¬γ³γγ©: Perent *γγγγ£γͺ: Pattio *γ¨γΌγ¬γ³γ: Yorrend *γΉγ©γ¦γε·: Traude River *γ’γγγγΉγγγ―οΌ Arhtstock *γ¨γ€γ: Yoitsu </td> <td valign="top"> *γγγΌγεδΌ: Milone Company *γγ¬γγΌι貨: Trenni silver </td> <td valign="top"> *γͺγ₯γγͺγΌγι貨: Rumione Gold Coin *γγ¬γγΌι貨: Toreni Silver Coin *γͺγ₯γΌγι貨: Ruuto Silver Coin *γγͺγ¨ι 貨: Torie Copper Coin </td> </tr> </table>
