Yeah, it's wordplay impossible to understand. Basically Nisio is lining up a series of words that have something in common: the kanji for white. Inside the brackets there are the kanji used. Thanks for your advice. It meant the former. A similar expression was used in chapter 2. Possibly a reference to some manga. The black circle is a scene you see in many anime when the episode ends. 2) yeah, it was wordplay. 　的外れ and 論外 (same kanji). The distinction between the two concepts is subtle: the first word implies missing the point, the second word implies "being outside the argument", meaning you cannot talk your way out, you simply cannot do it. In the end I changed the latter with "outside the argument", it flows better.
