Sentence meaning.

“From the cross-section of the severed tree, something like a black fog was emitting out.” I don’t quite understand this sentence. Does it mean that the Driad looks like a tree, and from the place where its arm used to be, smoke is coming out or that whatever cut its arm went through the spirit burning something behind it.
