The first line is very awkward, but I am not sure what the original meant. The current text is "There were still a little bit of snow ..., but they were already stained ..." I can see two possible rewrites:
There were still little bits of snow..., but they were already stained...
The second is:
There was still a little bit of snow..., but it was already stained...
