1 - Letter from Benares[edit]

Dear Houtarou,

I'm currently in Benares. Although people in Japan call this place Benares, calling it Varanasi is probably more accurate, technically speaking.

Benares is a great city, Houtarou. This is a city of funeral ceremonies - after all, it has a long history of funerals. It seems like whoever dies here can ascend directly to heaven. Or am I wrong?

Oh yes, it's said that this place is "free from the wheel of reincarnation." What it means is that dying here is the equivalent to becoming an enlightened being in the Buddhist sense. In China, a life of austerity is required to reach this state of "release", but here you simply pass away and then everything is okay.

Well, that's hardly fair for the Chinese.

Oh, by the way, belated congratulations on being successfully admitted into high school. It is Kamiyama High School after all, isn't it? What a boring choice. But congratulations anyway.

Here's a piece of advice from your big sis to someone who has safely become a high school student.

Enter the Classics Club.

The Classics Club is a humanities club in Kami-High with a long and venerable tradition. As you may know, I also a member of the club.

I heard through the grapevine that our tradition-rich club has had no new members for three years and currently has no members at all. If no one joins the club this year it will be disbanded. As a former member of the club, I won't stand for it.

If there happens to be a new member this April, well then, the situation will be completely different. Houtarou, protect the Classics Club, the bloom of your big sister's youth. Just join the club in name only.

Anyway, it's not really that bad of a club.

In autumn it's particularly great. You don't have anything better to do, do you? I'll give you a call after reaching New Delhi.

With love,
Tomoe
