Translator's Notes[edit]

A grebe is a species of freshwater diving bird. They dive their beaks into the water to snatch fish as prey.

Swiss Cheese[edit]

Wardes mentiones 'swiss cheese' in this chapter. Where from can Tristainian from Halkeginia know of Switzerland on Earth in parallel world? I think this 'swiss cheese' definitely needs a synonym, unless it's literal translation of Japanese original. Any ideas?

Well, it's a common idiom in English to talk about something being like Swiss cheese to indicate that it has lots of holes in it. Ignoring the fact that this is a reference to a country that doesn't exist in Halkeginia, the phrase fits perfectly here. If there were another idiom which meant the same thing but didn't reference anything that didn't exist in Halkeginia, then it might be better to use that, but I'm not aware of one. We can just treat it like an anachronism (only here it's something misplaced in space rather than time). Personally, I don't think that it's worth worrying about, though I can see why you would want to used a different phrase.

Corkboard also has a lot of holes in it? Would that be a possible substitute?
