Holidays are for sleeping—that's what the law says, maybe the civil law or the criminal law? Oh, it doesn't matter. Sleeping doesn't need a reason.

Most people probably haven't heard of this, and I had no idea it existed until I got this stuffed tiger. A toy manufacturer was hoping to cash in on the cute stuffed animals, but the overly avant-garde idea of combining animals with internal organs was undeniably poorly received. I'm told their inventory is so large it could bury Tokyo Bay.

So, why was this Seppuku Tiger talking?

"Finally up."

"Shut up, you're up."

I rubbed my eyes. Ah—I'm so sleepy.

The Seppuku Tiger's mouth kept opening and closing. The more I looked at it, the more I wondered if it had vocal cords or a speaker. Of course, there was a reason it could speak, but I'll explain that later.

"Being woken up by a doll so early in the morning was like a nightmare. If anyone saw me, they'd think I was crazy. I have my own alarm clock. Please, please, control yourself."

"What are you talking about? You broke your alarm clock yourself."

A digital alarm clock, its screen cracked, lay at my feet.

"It was ringing this morning, but you threw it against the wall while yelling, 'This is so noisy!' If I hadn't woken you, I think you would have slept all day."

So, in my dream, I felt like I was throwing something. In my dream, I was an American soldier fighting on the Normandy coast, hurling grenades at the German enemy camp. Although I successfully captured the enemy camp, my alarm clock also died heroically.

I unlocked it and turned the doorknob.

"Sorry...ah!"

The girl standing at the entrance, startled, was a girl named Akane. She was a sophomore at Seitetsu Academy, just like me. This girl with glasses always looked down at the ground, giving off a delicate aura. I met her because of something, which I'll explain later.

"Um...that...Natsuru-san..."

Akane looked at a loss, probably because the buttons of my pajamas were undone.

I buttoned them up.

"What's up, Akane?"

"Um... I had work today, so I just went to school."

"Thank you for your hard work."

Akane is a member of the library committee. She seems to be very serious by nature, even going out on weekends to help out at the school library. Compared to me, who is always late or skips sweeping duties whenever I can get a free moment, her brain must be completely different.

In reality, Akane is also a Kämpfer, a senior who came to the game six months before me. Like me, she wears a bracelet that glows blue and white, proving she's an ally. Enemies wear red bracelets.

Transformed into a woman, I panicked, but thankfully, my clothes stayed the same, so there were other reasons.

For a moment, I thought it was Akane again, but this time the knock was rude. Sunday knocks sounded polite, but this one sounded like a rock drill at a roadside construction site. Who on earth could it be?

Knock, knock, knock, knock. I rushed to open the door, treating it like a talking drum.

"I'm coming —who's from where?"

"Good morning, Natsuru!"

Standing there was a high school girl with short, sparkling hair.

Her cheerful tone and demeanor, her eyes sparkling like something out of a manga, her lively demeanor so brisk she had no idea what depression was.

I stared at her intently, wondering if I knew anyone this pretty.

"Let's go to school together."

She was wearing a Seitetsu Academy uniform. So that was it. That gave us a reason to go to school together, but why me?

The girl had her hands on her hips, an angry expression on her face for some reason.

She attended Seitetsu Academy like me, but she didn't attend classes properly. Then, she suddenly dropped out, saying she was traveling to the Middle East, supposedly to join in on a ruins excavation.

"...When did you come back?"

"The day before yesterday..."

Mikoto said with a grin.

"We were almost finding our excavation target, so I came back."

"You haven't changed at all! I wish your uncle and aunt had come with you."

"I'm not a child anymore. You live alone in Natsuru."

In the end, we basically had to run away to school. So, you could call it "going to school together because we're close friends."

I stole a glance at Mikoto and saw she seemed to be humming a song.

"You seem to be in such a good mood."

"Because I haven't been back to Japan in ages —"

"Is that so?"

"Yeah, Natsuru too. You were surprised to see me getting prettier, right?"

What are you talking about?

She's definitely getting prettier, though. She's more of a kawaii type, but she seems more feminine than before she went to the Middle East. Being feminine in high school is no small feat.

"What did Natsuru do while I was gone?" She did everything. It was all stuff I couldn't talk about.

Mikoto kept staring at me.

"Nothing?"

"Yeah."

"Do you have a girlfriend?"

"Poof!" Even though there was nothing in my mouth, I couldn't help but spit it out. It wasn't just choking; I almost thought my stomach was going to back up. "How could I possibly have a crush on someone like that? Who do you think I am?"

"Don't be so proud of something so bizarre, okay? You're so unpopular with girls, aren't you?"

"What's up with that hot girl from Seitetsu? Is her name Sakura Kaede?"

Sakura Kaede has fallen in love with the female version of me.

In other words, she's in love with the me that's become Kämpfer. People might call this homosexuality or lesbianism, but Sakura Kaede doesn't seem to mind. It's me, on the other hand, who's troubled. Nothing in this world can go as planned.

Although I'd successfully evaded Sakura Kaede's request for a relationship, I couldn't let it go any longer. It had become one of my many worries.

"Just go for it and try."

"You'll definitely fail. That would be disastrous."

But failure presupposes a male appearance.

"Proactive guys are more popular."

"I'm afraid of getting hurt. My heart is more fragile than glass, you know."

So, I desperately tried to memorize everything I might need to know about the exam, and before I knew it, class was over.

Most people would go to the bathroom or chat, but there was this incorrigible guy in Class 2, Grade 4 who always came up to talk to me.

"Hey, Natsuru."

This guy, with his features so unrefined they resembled a flat drawing, was called Higashida. As I mentioned before, he's the president of the underground Bishoujo Research Society. He keeps all the information about girls under his thumb. As president, he should be very busy, but for some reason, he keeps coming up to me to talk. I don't think he really likes me. It's really annoying.

"What's up? I don't want to buy your photos."
