Volume 6, Chapter 2  


    "Is Natsuru here?"  


    "Dong -dong -dong!" It was clearly nighttime, yet the house rang with the clamor of drums, 

like the communication of a tribe in the forests of West Africa. I looked up, paused the 

comedy show I was watching in my room, and headed for the entrance.  


    The door was vibrating softly. This was the source of the noise, disturbing the neighbors in 

the middle of the night. But the person across the door didn't care, not only knocking with 

her mouth but also banging her hands.  


    "Natsuru! If you don't open it, I'll break it down! Don't resist! Open it!"  


    What resistance? When have I ever defended a castle? Although, if this happened a few 

more times, I'd resist like I did at Asama Sanso.  


    I said, in a voice she could hear.  


    "I'll open it now, don't mess around."  


    "No need to open it! I'll show you my impressive lock -picking skills."  


    "Don't do anything unnecessary."  


    One moment she said she'd open the door, the next she said she wouldn't. What a 

contradiction. After all, the initiative was in your hands. I opened the door before she could 

do anything.  


    Standing in the entrance was my childhood sweetheart, Kondou Mikoto.  


    "Yeah~"  


    she inexplicably made a V -sign.  


    "You knew it was me?"  


    "Of course."  


    This girl's voice was instantly recognizable from a hundred meters away.  


    "Great, that's what childhood sweethearts are like."  


    "You're disturbing the neighbors."  


    "No one will care."  


    This woman is truly optimistic, and more than half of what she said is actually true. 

Because she always comes to my house to make trouble, she's been labeled a "Senou family 

girl." In that case, even if the police were called, they wouldn't come. Sinc e "Kondou family" 

isn't listed in the definition, they might even think she lives with us.  


    Mikoto walked in without hesitation.  


    "What are you doing here?"  


    "To cook."  


    Just listening to that line really makes her sound like a girl, since that's all she knows how 

to cook anyway.  


    I was frustrated.  


    "Curry again?"  


    "Yes,"  


    Mikoto said, puffing out her chest with a matter -of-fact expression.  


    This girl's love for curry is extraordinary. It's all curry from morning to night, ordering it at 

restaurants and at other people's homes, and forcing others to eat it too. Was she 

threatened or bribed by the Curry God?  


    She said, "Curry is a proud Japanese culture," and while I don't disagree, forcing someone 

to eat it seems a bit too much. I heard they even used curry to tame a Middle Eastern tribe. If 

they've achieved that level, it's a strategic weapon.  


    And I don't know what this girl is thinking, coming to my house just to make curry. It 

should be a wonderful scene to have a childhood friend cook for me, but this is like torture. 

I'm turning yellow. Mikoto  


    was holding a plastic bag from the supermarket.  


    "What kind of curry are you having today?"  


    "Chicken curry."  


    "Isn't it quite traditional?"  


    "The most authentic one."  


    Even so, I've eaten it hundreds of times.  


    Mikoto said, "Lend me the kitchen!" Even if I said no, she wouldn't have listened, so I chose 

to remain silent.  


    She opened the refrigerator first.  


    "Wow, there's some leftover."  


    "You made so much, of course there's going to be some."  


    "Eat more, what a waste."  


    "I still have my lunch in my lunchbox, but I can't digest it. There's plenty of curry in the 

freezer to open a shop."  


    Mikoto exclaimed, "Oh!" looking at the freezer. Why are you so surprised? You made all 

this.

    "Is there such a thing?"  


    Doesn't this girl have the word "variation" in her culinary dictionary? Aren't curry and 

ramen both favorites of elementary school students?  


    Mikoto also likes ramen, but her only reason is "convenience." When I heard that, I 

retorted, "It's not easy, is it?" She actually took the noodles out of the bag and ate them dry, 

saying that it was easy to fill her stomach in the mountains, and the o nly downside was that 

she'd be thirsty.  


    "Well, let's have curry today."  


    And so it went.  


    Humming, she washed the cutting board, then took out the chicken and cut it into bite -

sized pieces, moving briskly.  


    "You, you only make curry, but you're quite good at it."  


    "Are you praising me?"  


    "I guess so."  


    "Thank you, because in the rainforest, everything needs a knife."  


    It's hard to imagine a high school girl saying this.  


    Mikoto constantly takes time off from school to fly around the world. Normally, people 

yearn for places like America and Europe, but this girl's constant travels are to Central and 

South America, the Middle East, or Africa. She travels to "places with ancient civilizations," 

and influenced by her parents, she's now a complete excavation fanatic.  


    She doesn't say it herself, but it seems she's also involved in poaching, and the illegal 

aspect seems to suit her. It seems she even fought armed poppy farmers in Guatemala.  


    "What are your parents doing?"  


    "Hmm? Still abroad, Georgia, I think."  


    Where is that?  


    "You really came back alone."  


    "It doesn't matter, but it still won't work if you don't go to high school."  


    She's so inexplicably hypocritical. This girl can survive even with no education, let alone 

high school.  


    "Natsuru has to graduate from high school too."

    She's a year younger than me, yet she's like an older sister.

Unlike those college students who claim they're "rediscovering themselves" and head off to 

India, this girl actually does field work. She's been flying around the  world since she was 

little, experiencing all sorts of things, and it's all firsthand, so it's quite something. An 

autobiography would be quite interesting.  


    A typical high school student would worry about their future, but she doesn't seem to 

have that tendency at all. She's happy just being in the present. That's probably why she's so 

happy to be a Kämpfer.  


    "But this curry hell isn't that bad, is it?"  


    she said out loud. Of course, Mikoto wouldn't let her go.  


    "What? You want to fight?"  


    "No, no, no~ I mean, Kondou -san's curry rice is always so delicious~"  


    "So you mean you hate me, right?"  


    Mikoto spun her kitchen knife, as if she were chopping onions. I'd better keep quiet. If she 

turns around and throws a flying knife, I'm not confident I can dodge it.  


    I stir -fry it in a large pot. Every pot in my house is filled with curry, but my mom loves to 

cook, so she has as many frying pans and other things as she can get. Mom, I hate you.  


    After sautéing the meat, add the vegetables, pour in the water and vegetable juice, and 

simmer for a while.  


    "Why vegetable juice?"  


    "It tastes great as a slightly unique seasoning."  


    Really? I don't know.  


    "I've done this a few times..."  


    Mikoto glanced at me.  


    "Don't you remember?"  


    "It's not a matter of remembering. I'm not watching you cook."

meaning homemade.

    What's the point of praising a childhood friend at this point? Is it a good lottery win?  


    Mikoto muttered indignantly, "I was wrong to expect you to flatter me."  


    There was still some time before the food was done, so we sat on the kitchen chairs.  


    We had a drink before dinner. Although the fridge was full of curry, there was still a little 

space for Coke for me.  


    I poured myself and Mikoto's portion.  


    "Here."  


    "Thank you,"  


    she gulped down, a gesture so far removed from her elegant dining style.  


    "Wow, a drink after work is so nice."  


    "Is it work?"  


    "To keep Natsuru alive."  


    My life doesn't depend on curry, but it certainly saves me some food money.  


    "You..."  


    "What?"  


    "Why did you come to my house to cook?"  


    "Why... because we're childhood friends."  


    Is that a reason?  


    "I've said it before, it's a childhood sweetheart's duty, we have to do it."  


    "What duty?"  


    "A duty is a duty..."  


    It's unusual for her to be so vague; maybe she was just about to say it wasn't a duty but a 

way of bullying me.  


    "Akane and the president, they're not childhood friends, but they still help me."  


    "Those two... they must be up to something."  


    What the hell? If you say that, wouldn't it mean I'm surrounded by scheming women?  


    Mikoto glanced around.  


    "Is the president coming again?"

    Mikoto sighed and sat down in the chair.  


    "So Akane's here too. Does the president have to come too?"

    The curry pot made a sound. Mikoto glanced at it. It's okay if you don't stir it.  


    "...Hey, Natsuru. You weren't invited on a date by the president, were you?"  


    "What are you talking about? Even if the earth turned upside down, that's impossible."  


    I'm not good at Shizuku, or rather, I was warning her.  


    "Until a while ago, I thought this was as surreal as a sewing machine and a bat parasol 

meeting on an operating table. But... there are so many things in this world that can't be 

explained."  


    "No, that's clear. I can't possibly date the president."  


    "No?"  


    "No."  


    Shizuku, that rapist, once stole my lips, but my heart can't be taken away. For Sakura 

Kaede, I must protect my purity.

    Mikoto stood up, turned down the stove, and sat back down.

    Akane agreed softly.

    To end the conversation, I turned on the TV. There is a TV in my kitchen. Although it's not a 

good habit to watch TV while eating, it's better to have one.  


    There was a variety show of some kind, in which model sisters were performing in 

swimsuits, moaning in the hot water. Wow, there are breasts here too.  


    Mikoto glanced at the TV,

    "So annoying."  


    Akane also glanced at me, which made me feel embarrassed to turn off the TV. I would 

have to keep watching this boring show.  


    Mikoto completely ignored the curry,  


    "...Hey, are men interested in postures like 'hmm~' and 'ah~'?"

    "I was wondering if I would be excited if I did that."  


    "Who is it?"  


    "Natsuru"

    "Yawn!"  


    Mikoto exclaimed indignantly.  


    "Why did you sneeze all of a sudden!?"  


    "I didn't mean to, my nose was itchy."  


    It was force majeure, though I was actually wondering what you were doing.  


    "I'll do it again, so you can see clearly."  


    She lay down again, this time with a watery look in her eyes, stretched out her right hand 

and curled her fingers.  


    "...What's going on?"  


    "Ah~ So excited, so excited."  


    "Be serious!"  


    What do you mean by serious? My childhood sweetheart, a rough girl, lying there moving 

around, wouldn't she feel anything at all. A long time ago, I seemed to have heard about 

potted flowers that moved to music, but that's about it.  


    "That's too much! Do you really hate my breasts?"

unhappy too.  


    Mikoto ripped at her hair.  


    "Ah! I hate this unsexy body!"

    "I hate Natsuru even more, because he's not only slow but also stupid!"
