I worked so hard to get into high school, but I failed miserably right from the start.

Free from studying for entrance exams and of course with no homework, I was enjoying the spring break, spending every day hanging out with my friends from middle school. But then I caught influenza, which I must have gotten somewhere during that time, and was absent from school from the first day.

The entrance ceremony was a chance to meet my classmates with whom I would be studying in the same classroom for the next year, and I wanted to attend even if I had to crawl, but my mother persuaded me to give up, saying that it would be a shame to spread the disease to my classmates with whom I would be studying in the same classroom for the next year.

I wouldn’t be able to bear the thought of being treated like a pathogen for a year because of that, and I wouldn’t like being given a strange nickname like “Influenza-san”.

So when I recovered and tried on the black uniform I had always wanted and went to school, I was shocked to find the student sitting next to me was missing. Of course, my virus didn’t spread.

“Chinami-san has gone overseas for treatment. I was keeping this for Terasu-san and was told to give it to her when she comes back”.

My classmate handed me a notebook.

Thanks to the injections and medicine, the high fever from the flu went down in about three days, but my family doctor, who had been taking care of me since I was a child, was slow to prescribe me medicine, and it was already ten days after the entrance ceremony that I went to school for the first time. Meanwhile, the orientation was over and the classes had already started.

Apparently, the kind person sitting next to me, Hibino Chinami-san, had made the notebook for me. In the notebook, information about all the subjects taught was written down. It wasn’t filled with only study-related material; it was fun and included pages with teachers’ self-introductions and, in some cases, even caricatures.

“I’m really glad you came to school today, Terasu-san. Chinami-san asked me to continue this, but I’m not as good at writing or drawing as Chinami-san”.

Hiroe-san, sitting in front of me, who must have opened the notebook and looked inside, added with a laugh.
