The text bracketed in the ref tags is treated as a reference/note and put at the bottom of the page while a link to the text is placed in the point where you wrote the ref tags and the reference text/note. It's way more convenient than putting translation notes on a separate page and then making links to it. Best of all it's inherited through transclusion.
