==Chapter 9 - August 14th, 12 midnight – 1:00 am==
===
1
===
I abruptly returned to myself and woke up.

===1===
A deep darkness lay before my eyes. I was leaning against the door, nearly lying down.

Abruptly, I returned to my body. Looking around after regaining consciousness, it was still pitch-black. Then I looked at myself: I was sprawled extremely inelegantly by the door.
“A failure...

“I failed—”
I failed.

I failed.
—He’s obstinate.

obstinate!
I don’t think there are any words that can persuade someone who’s become so obstinate.

I did not think that there were any words that could persuade one as obstinate as him.
...Kirishima...sensei.”

“—Kirishima –sensei.
I understand his pain. I understand, but I cannot leave this as it is.

I understood his pain, but I couldn’t leave him like this.
As it is, the children are miserable. They’re filled with the sorrow of death and wholly paralyzed. Because they’re lonely, they’re starving for something to fill that loneliness, calling out for companions, but it doesn’t console them in the least. They’re sorrow steadily grows once they’ve obtained one.

If that were to continue, the children would be very pitiable. Their deaths brought them a world of pain, hence the children, with nowhere to go, because of loneliness, because they desired something to escape this loneliness… Hence they recruited friends, but this did not give them any succor: all they got was the relentless sorrow inflicted upon them.
I will purify those children and ensure one never dies here again. I have to stop the loneliness.

It was necessary to cleanse these children. I could not let more children die here. I had to stop this tragedy from continuing.
And Kirishima-sensei.

And there was Kirishima sensei.
He lost his life, and to make matters worse, he grieved the loss of his student’s lives. In an effort to erase it all, he became an obstinate person.

The pain of losing one’s own life, combined with the sorrow of witnessing the children lose their lives; because all was lost; he turned into an obstinate person.
I understand his feelings, but I think he’s a very gentle person.

I could comprehend his feelings. Because I know he must have been a gentle person.
Even so, I want to look after my companions just like he wanted to look after his students. I want us all to meet safely, leave this school together, and say, “See you later.

However, just as he treasured his students, I also treasure my companions. I want to be with them, to walk out of the school with them, and say ‘goodbye’.
Consequently, I remembered Naru’s words.

At this time, I recalled the words Naru said to me.
“Oh, I see now...”

“I completely forgot—”
How stupid of me!

I really am an idiot.
“I was told I shouldn’t show them pity or sympathy.

“Naru had clearly mentioned to me that I could not use sympathy or pity.
I smacked my head.

I knocked my own head.
It was pointless even if I scolded myself. I needed to imbue them with light.

There was no point in admonishment. I had to fill them with light.
“Alright!”

“That’s what I’ll do!”
Murmuring to myself, I stood up energetically.

I said to myself, as I sprang back up from the floor.
“I’ll try it again.

“Right! I’ll challenge him once more!”

***

I opened the door of the classroom – there’ll be a way somehow. There was no use screaming however loudly here.
I opened the classroom door. Somehow, I felt it would be pointless no matter how much I called out from here.

– off to the classroom, then.
—I’ll go to the classroom.

That was the place that bound Kirishima-sensei and the children. It must have been because that place – to the children and the teacher – still held a bit of comfort.
The place that Kirishima-sensei and the children are particular about. Because, undoubtedly, that place will be at least a little warmer for both the children and Sensei.

In the darkness, after I groped my way down the stairs, I heard a small clattering sound. Halting my steps, the sound was right in front of me.
Within the darkness, as I walked towards the stairs, feeling my way along the wall with my hand, there was a slight clatter. When I stopped for a moment, the sound grew closer from in front of me.

After standing in wait for a moment, a small black figure appeared by the wall. My heart pounded a little faster.
As I remained still, a small, black shadow appeared alongside the wall. My pulse elevated slightly.

There were 3 figures that appeared by the corner. Although they looked approximately child sized, they were, however I looked at them, distorted paper-cut silhouettes. Small heads, stick-like limbs, and abnormally disproportionately large belly; I did not know if it was because the stick-like legs could not support the body, the children appeared bent over, squatting, and walked with a strange posture using their hands (as well).
Three shadows appeared at the corner. They were about the size of children, but their silhouettes appeared distorted in some respects. They had small heads and limbs like sticks. Their chests and shoulders were also tremendously small, however, their stomachs were large to the extent of oddity. Their manner of walking with both hands was bizarre.

– Danger!
—’It’s dangerous,’ passed through my mind.

I don’t know if caution is a positive ‘feeling’ or a negative ‘feeling’.
I wonder, is wariness a positive ‘feeling’ or a negative ‘feeling’?

I took a deep breath.
I took a deep breath.

“Ne! –Let’s go to the classroom together.”
“...Hey, let’s go to the classroom.”

The approaching shadows momentarily stopped.

“Well, shall we go back to the classroom?”

I crouched down.

I approached tentatively. The figures stopped.
I mustn’t think of them as monsters. Those in front of me now are children. If a person is made of ‘body’ and ‘spirit’, then these children have no body.

“That is – are you guys going back to the classroom?”
—I love children.

I squatted down as well.
Children are small and soft, and of course they’re brazenly mouthy and say spiteful things, but even so, they possess an atmosphere that makes it unable to resist hugging them.

I could not take what I saw in front of me as abominations – these were the children. If people have a ‘body’ and a ‘spirit’, then they were only children without bodies.
I remembered that, after I started worked at ‘Shibuya Psychic Research’, I met a variety of children while going on investigations. I smiled lightly.

I really do love the children.
There were three small children in the house in Noto where we had been until now. We became good friends while our stay there dragged on. When it was time to go home, I was happy that they told me, “Please come again,” with tearful expressions. I wonder what everyone is doing now. —Well, naturally, they’re probably sleeping right now.

Holding a small, gentle grudge; or vehemently and aggressively hating – but these were all done by the children to keep people away.
A genuine smile escaped.

I recalled the numerous children I had encountered while working at ‘Shibuya Psychic Research’, and could not help laughing.
“Well, would you like to go to the classroom? Shall we go together?”

While we were at Noto I had also encountered some children. While waiting for Naru to be discharged, we became good friends. When we left, they even had tear-filled expressions, but once I said, ‘we’ll be back’, they were happy once more. What is everyone doing now?
The children tilted their heads a little. It was a truly endearing, child-like gesture.

– Hn, at this time, they definitely are asleep.
“I’d like to see everyone in class and Kirishima-sensei. I want to say I’m sorry for being mean earlier… oh, was that a dream or reality?”

A genuine smile appeared on my face.
Like before, the children continued to tilt their heads, unmoving.

“That is – are you guys going to the classroom? Let’s go together?”
“I don’t really know. —Still, I feel that I need to say sorry. So, shall we go to the classroom? Will you take me?”

The children tilted their heads slightly in thought. This action really is something unique to children – it’s really cute.
The children looked at each other once again, then moved awkwardly and turned their backs. Taking a few steps, they began walking towards the stairs.

“I want to meet the other students in the class. I want to meet Kirishima sensei. Just now I did something bad, so I want to apologize to them. – ah, was just now a dream or a reality?
...thank you.

As expected, the children still had their heads inclined in thought, and did not move a step.

***

“Nee-san isn’t very clear, but no matter what you want to apologize, so you want to go to the classroom. Can we bring nee-san there?”
After we went to the stairs, I saw some children at the bottom of the staircase. I walked without worrying and descended the stairs. None of them were a danger to me. I was gladdened by this and my mood steadily brightened.

The children exchanged glances, then started moving with their backs facing me. One moved in the direction of the staircase. The other two also started moving.
—Well, such simplicity is necessary.

“—Thank you!”
There were also two or so children in the entry hall and, as I smiled at them and walked towards the classroom, they toddled after me. Ten or so children followed around me and it was something enjoyable. Before long, the smallest child beside me raised her thin, fragile hand and I took ahold of it.

At the stairs, I could see quite a few children at the floor below. I descended the stairs without much worry – none of the children had any intention to hurt me, and I gradually relaxed. – Indeed, this innocence is what is most precious in children.
As soon as I grasped the small hand, which felt like a withered branch, my chest swelled with affection.

There were another two children in the vestibule. They smiled while walking towards the classroom, then started skipping along. There were about 10 children around me, and they appeared very happy. At this time, the smallest child beside me reached out a fragile hand and pulled me to a stop.
===
2
===

The instance the twig-like hand touched mine, my heart filled with tenderness.
When I entered the classroom, there were a great deal of children inside. Children were seated at the desks, children gathered at the back of the classroom, children walked between the desks. They were doing a variety of things. It was as though I had really entered a classroom at recess.

===2===
There was a large shadow seated at the desk adjacent to the teaching podium. It was about the size of an adult and resembled a demon without horns. Sensei stood up. He remained standing, silently watching me.

After entering the classroom, I saw a flock of children: a group seated facing the table, a cluster gathered at the back of the classroom, and children walking around the classroom. There were many, many children. It was as though I had really entered a classroom during recess.
“I’m sorry about earlier.

Seated at the table adjacent to the teaching podium was a very large shadow – about the size of an adult. Like a devil without horns, sensei stood up. He just stood there, motionless, and looked at me without making a sound.
I lightly bowed my head to Sensei, then also bowed my head to the children who were looking in my direction.

“About what happened just now, I’m sorry—”
“I’m sorry.”

I lowered my head gently towards sensei, after that I bowed towards the children who looked at me.
Saying that, I looked around the classroom.

“I’m sorry!
“I’m sorry that I spoke cruelly. But, I'll say the same thing. Please don’t increase your friends anymore.

Saying that, I glanced around the classroom.
Sensei took a step. I looked at him directly.

“Just now, I said something unforgivable, I’m really very sorry. But I still have to say this: please don’t look for more friends anymore!
“Please return my companions.”

Sensei took a step forward. I looked straight towards sensei, who was glaring at me.
He took another step, the distance between us drawing nearer.

“Please return my companions to me!
“Just like Sensei cares for everyone, my companions are important to me, too.

I took a step forwards myself. The distance between us decreased.
Saying that, I looked around the classroom.

“Just as sensei values everyone’s feelings, I treasure my companions.”
“Just like everyone loves Sensei and their friends, I really love my companions, too.”

I glanced at the children in the classroom and continued,
Naru and Lin-san. Ayako and Masako. Bou-san, John, and Yasuhara-san.

“Like how everyone, like how sensei loves your companions, I love my companions very much too!”
Ever since we met by chance up until today, there have been things that were warm and gentle.

Naru and Lin-san; Ayako and Masako; Bou-san and John as well as Yasuhara. By chance we met and got along until now; many things have happened: things that let one feel warmth and comfort.
“Naru seems like an extremely cold-hearted person, but actually, there’s a part of him that’s surprisingly gentle. He’s good at magic tricks. There was a time before when he gave me encouragement me with that.

“Although Naru appears to be very cold, in reality there are parts of him that are very gentle. And he also knows how to perform magic. He previously showed me in order to encourage me.
All of a sudden, there was a noise and light illuminated the inside of the classroom. It was merely the clouds drifting apart and the moonlight shining in, but in a way, I felt greatly encouraged.

In the blink of an eye, a ray of light shone into the classroom. Although it was merely moonlight, in my point of view it was a type of encouragement.
“Lin-san, too. Though he’s extremely expressionless, reticent, and difficult to approach, I think he’s actually a gentle person nonetheless. Also, because he’s such a person, when I receive a smile from him every once in a while, I feel like I’ve earned something. I feel like it’s a very good sign and it makes me happy.

“And there is Lin-san. Although he is an expressionless, taciturn man of few words all day long, he is actually a very gentle person. Even a person of this sort still smiles at me occasionally. I feel like I’ve been accepted by him. I feel this is a good beginning, it really makes me extremely happy.
Although, he’s only given me enough smiles to count on one hand.

– Even though the number of times he has smiled at me can be counted on one hand.
“If I’m speaking of those who put people off at first, then it’s certainly true of Masako, too. She seems stuck-up, but she’s a reliable gal. She’s clever, too. Actually, she’s quite admirable, and since I’m a rough person, I think her girlish nature is nice. Therefore, I’m extremely glad that Masako and I became good friends. —Yeah, Bou-san and Ayako’s first impression was bad, too. Still, everyone’s pretty nice.

“The one who made the worst first impression was Masako – her words were always filled with thorns. But she is actually a very reliable fellow – very capable, but she’s still bad tempered. Because I’m like a wild child, I’ve always wanted to be feminine like Masako. That’s why I’m really very happy to be able to become friends with Masako. – Yeah, my first impressions of Bou-san and Ayako were no good either, but in reality they are all very good people.
Actually, when I think about it, all of them have poor demeanors.

Really, thinking about it, practically all the first impressions made by everyone’s appearances were not very good.
“Ayako is actually a really caring person. She’s noisy, though. In fact, she always fusses over me. I like it. It reminds me of my mother and makes me happy.”

“Ayako is actually a person who loves to look after others. Although she is a little long winded, I still like it when she nags and looks after me. It reminds me of my mother.
Although, my mother was a bit quieter.

– Although my mother was a little quieter.
“Whenever I talk to Ayako, it cheers me up. That’s why I love her. I’m glad that I get lectured by Bou-san like I’m being scolded by a father. I really like it when he pushes me around with his big hands and pats my head. But it’s a secret, okay?”

“Every time I speak with Ayako, I’ll be filled with energy, that’s why I love Ayako. Bou-san’s father-like lectures also makes me feel very fortunate. He knocks me with his large hands, and pats my head all the time. Really, I love it very, very much. But this is my secret!”
If it got out, that guy would forever be emboldened by it.

If this were to come out, that man would be too proudly happy.
“I love John’s slightly weird Kansai accent. He’s quiet and humble to the utmost. And yet, when a thought occurs to me and I look back at him, I realize he’s watching over me with kind eyes. That happens often and it’s wonderful. I also love Yasuhara-san’s immense cheerfulness. When I’m with him, I feel uplifted. No matter how serious a situation, when I hear Yasuhara-san’s jokes or his and Bou-san’s comic dialogue, it makes me feel like we’ll be able to manage one way or another.

“I love John’s slightly weird Kansai accent. He is a very conscientious and very honest person. When I suddenly think of him and turn around, I can always feel those gentle eyes – I’ve already felt this feeling many times. I also love Yasuhara’s optimistic personality – being with him makes me forget unhappy events. Regardless of how severe the circumstances are, once I hear Yasuhara’s jokes or the comedic dialogue between him and Bou-san, I will relax at once.
—Yeah, I really love them all.

–Yeah, I really love everyone.
“Therefore, I want you to return them. Because they’re all important to me. I love being with all of them. I want to leave the school building with them and return to Tokyo together. The office will be gone, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll never see each other again.

“That’s why, I hope you can return everyone to me. They are all very important to me! I love being with everyone! I want to be together with them, walk out of this school together, and go back to Tokyo together. Despite the eminent closure of the offices, it’s not like we would never meet again.
Saying this, I smiled slightly in embarrassment.

At this point, I smiled embarrassedly.
“...Yeah, I thought we might not meet again, but I felt like I’d be laughed at if I said, ‘Let’s get together even if the office closes.’ But I know that’s unlikely.

“—Yeah, I think, perhaps I won’t be meeting them again. With the offices closed, to still say that I want to continue to be friends, everyone might laugh at me – but I think they won’t do that.
I’m pretty stupid.

“Everyone treats me very well. Even at this time, they are all still protecting me. If it was for the sake of a fellow who I don’t want to meet for a second time, or even one with whom a second meeting was of no importance to me, a very good fellow (tl/n:???), I think everyone wouldn’t do this. Right now I’m also trying my best for everyone. Like everyone, they are all desperately protecting me like this. They are concerned about my situation – this makes me feel rather proud!
“After all, everyone’s kind to me. Even while I’m here, everyone is protecting me. To refuse to meet like that, I think it would have to be because it’s someone you dislike enough to not want to meet again or because it’s someone you don’t care about enough for it to matter that you meet again. I’m determined right now because everyone is important to me. And it’s a little conceited, but they protect me with all their might because they care about me.”

Kirishima-sensei looked at me.
Kirishima-sensei was watching me.

All the children in the classroom looked at me.
The children filling the classroom were also watching me.

“Therefore, please return everyone to me! And please don’t continue this sort of thing anymore.”
“Therefore, return everyone. Then, I want you to stop bringing more friends.”

Someone tugged my hand gently; only then did I recall that the children still held my hand. Having gotten used to the moonlight, my eyes could see clearly: the child in front of me really did not appear human.
My hand was lightly tugged and I remembered I was still holding the small child’s hand. The light of the moon was bright in my eyes, which had gotten used to the darkness, and I could clearly see that the child’s form was not human.

The little ghost holding my hand looked up at me; I smiled.
The imp that held my hand was staring up at me. I gave her a small smile.

“I think the friends you’ve brought here definitely have people like me, to whom they are important. Like me, they have people who love them very much. If it is an extremely painful thing not to be able to meet the people one loves, one will be very sad if one’s loved ones die. – Therefore, I want to be together with (my friends)!
“I think there are people who treasure and worry for the friends you brought here just like I treasure and worry for all my companions. Like me, I think there are people that they love. Not being able to see the people you love is painful. If my loved ones disappeared, I would be sad. I think that’s the same for everyone, too.

===
3
===

“Together?”
“The same?”

It was the child who held my hand who spoke.
The child holding my hand was the one who spoke.

“Yeah. What is your name?”
“Yeah. —What’s your name?”

“Sugisato Ryoya(?)(杉里凌野).”
“Sugiura Ayano.”

Ryoya straightened his back – he had stood up without my noticing. The slender hand from just now had turned somewhat chubbier, and it felt softer holding it.
Ayano-chan’s back straightened and before I knew it, she was standing upright. The hand I was holding, which had been so slender, thickened and felt slightly soft.

“Do you love your father?”
“Ayano-chan, you love your father, right?”

“I do!
“I love him.

“Do you love your mother?”
“You love your mother, too, right?”

“I love her too!”
“Yeah!”

“I also love my companions, the same as you do.”
“I love my companions, too. It’s the same as Ayano-chan.”

“The same…”
“It is the same, huh?”

“Yeah. Do you love sensei too?”
“Yeah. You love Sensei, too, right?”

“I love him a lot!”
“I really love him!”

I smiled.
I laughed.

“Because sensei is a gentle and good teacher, right?”
“Because he’s a very gentle and good teacher, right?”

“Yeah!”
“Yeah!”

A nodding head and the face of an approximately 10 year old girl overlapped. (tl/n:???)
The face of a ten-year-old girl overlapped her nodding face.

“But he’s very scary when he gets angry!
“But it’s scary when he gets angry.

“Is that so!”
“Ah, I see!”

“But sensei knows how to do the horizontal bars!
“He’s really good at the horizontal bars.

“Ai…”
“Really.”

“But he’s a little tone deaf!
“But, he’s a little tone deaf.

I smiled, and looked at the children in the classroom.
I laughed and looked at everyone in the classroom.

“Everyone loves sensei as well, right?”
“Does everyone love Sensei, too?”

Immediately after I finished, everyone replied in one voice: we love sensei!
When I asked, their voices returned, ‘I love him!

“If sensei were to disappear, you would feel lonely, right? You don’t wish for this to happen, right?”
“If Sensei disappeared, it’d be lonely, right? You wouldn’t like it, right?”

The little faces nodded.
They nodded their small faces.

“If it’s like this, if the transfer students were to disappear, there will also be people who feel lonely.”
“In that same way, all the transfer students had someone who became lonely.”

– Everyone became silent.
A hush fell over the class.

“Everyone brought the children here because of loneliness, right? But the children who were brought here also have teachers whom they love. – Therefore, don’t do this anymore.”
“Because you were all lonely, you brought children to play. But, just like you, the children had a teacher that they loved….therefore, don’t do it anymore.”

The children seated at their seats; the classroom filled with moonlight.
The children were all seated. The classroom was flooded with moonlight.

“Because I have my companions, therefore although my parents are no longer around, I don’t feel lonely. Will you still be lonely because you are just one class even though sensei is here?”
“I have no mother and father, but I’m not lonely because I have my companions. Will everyone be sad if you only have one classroom despite having Sensei and your friends?”

“No way!”
“Not at all!”

Hearing that voice, I turned. It was Tsumura.
I heard a voice from behind me and when I looked back, it was Tsugumi-kun.

I patted his head.
I patted Tsugumi-kun’s head.

“You’re really incredible. Because Tsumura is a brave young boy.
“Well done! That a boy!

“Yeah!”
“Yeah!”

Tsumura smiled. I looked at Kirishima sensei. I no longer saw the appearance of a ghost, merely a man who hung his head.
I smiled at Tsugumi-kun, then looked at Kirishima-sensei. He no longer looked like a demon. The man hung his head and cast his eyes downward.

“Everyone really loves you very much, sensei.”
“Everyone loves Sensei tremendously.”

“…”
“......”

“With the teacher whom the students love a lot around, and the students whom the teacher loves a lot around, I think this is really a type of happiness.”
“I think it’s really nice that there are teachers who love their students and students who love their teacher.”

“—Isn’t this so?”
“...Is that so?”

“Yes!
“Yes.

Sensei was silent for a long while before saying a single line:
Sensei remained silent for a long while. Eventually, he spoke absently,

“Could it be… I could be a really lucky person…”
“It’s possible that I might be a very lucky person... ”

“… You are.”
“...Yes.”

When I nodded, a light shone from behind me. Turning, from behind me, a bright light shone through the crack between the doors. Opening the door it was as bright as day outside.
It was as I nodded. A light shone from behind. When I looked back, a bright light was shining through the gaps in the classroom door directly behind me. When I opened the door, it was midday outside.

Up till just now it was clearly a dark place, but I did not feel this was glaring at all. Outside the door was not the corridor but a field; beautifully green, soft grass stretched endlessly, bright light shone from the heavens above.
Although it was dark inside here until just now, it didn’t seem blinding in the slightest. Just outside the door was a meadow rather than a corridor. Beautiful, soft green grass went on forever and the area was drenched in a downpour of brilliant light.

Waah! – I heard the soft exclamations of the children.
‘Wow...’ the children softly exclaimed.

Sensei looked outside, then around the classroom.
Sensei looked outside in awe, then looked around the inside of the classroom.

“—Children, do you want to go on a field trip?”
“—Everyone, should we go on another field trip?”

It was a din of happy elation.
There was a small shout of joy.

“Are we taking a bus there?”
“Are we going on the bus?”

Mariko asked uneasily.
It was Mariko-chan who asked so uneasily.

“No, we aren’t taking a bus. We are walking there!
“No, we won’t use the bus. We’re all going to walk there.

“That’s a relief then, sensei.”
“That’s a relief, then, Sensei.”

“Yeah, it’ll be fine!
“Yeah. It’ll be okay.

Kirishima-sensei smiled while walking towards the door. I quietly moved to the empty space by the side.
Smiling, Kirishima-sensei walked towards the door. I stepped aside just a bit and vacated the space. Sensei stood beside the door.

Sensei stood at the side of the door.
“Let’s go! —The smaller children should hold hands with their upperclassmen. Watch your step and don’t fall behind!”

“We’re setting off. The younger children must hold on to the older children’s hands. Look out, don’t fall behind.”
‘Okay!’ they responded cheerfully.

‘We got it,the children replied in one voice.
Then, the children left the classroom one after another. Some of the children ran out by themselves and others grabbed the hands of the smaller children.

Then the children skipped on by themselves, or holding another little hand, and exited the classroom in order.
Sensei watched over them, and then he held out his hand toward Ayano-chan, who had held onto my hand and didn’t let go until the end.

Sensei always looked at them, and then he reached out to Ryoya, who did not release my hand.
“Ayano, too. Let’s go.

“Ryoya, it’s time to go too!
“Okay.

“Yeah!”
Ayano-chan released my hand and took ahold of Sensei’s. She looked back and waved her tiny hand.

Ryoya let go of my hand and held sensei’s hand. He took a few steps then turned and waved to me.
“Bye-bye, Onee-chan!”

“Nee-san, bye bye!”
“Bye-bye!”

“Bye bye!”
Kirishima-sensei bowed his head slightly. Immediately after, he tugged on Ayano-chan’s hand and exited the classroom. The door closed. —Then I was left behind inside the classroom.

Kirishima sensei nodded to me, then, holding Ryoya’s hand, walked out of the classroom.
Dust had accumulated on the floor and covered the desks and chairs. That was all that remained within the classroom. The deserted space was fully saturated in the pale light of the moon.

The door closed. – I was the only one left in the classroom.
I cried a little just then, but it definitely wasn’t because I was in pain.

Only the dust covered floor, chairs and tables were left in the empty classroom flooded with the pale blue light of the moon.
===
4
===

I cried – but they were definitely not tears of sadness.
I went out into the corridor and stopped for a moment. I stared at the closed window.

===4===
When I gently reached out my hand and tried to move it, it creaked, but opened a little regardless. The gentle night breeze drifted in. I was greeted by the smell of wet grass.

Reaching the corridor, I stopped for a moment, looking at the closed window in front of me.
I smiled complacently and this time opened the window with all my might. The old, hard to open window got caught, but opened wide nonetheless.

Reaching out I pushed tentatively. Creaking, it opened a crack. A gentle wind blew in, bringing in the fragrance of fresh grass.
“Hehehe...

I smiled slightly, then after using a little strength and pushing repeatedly, the window opened fully.
The school yard was also drenched in a downpour of moonlight and was very bright.

“Hey…”
I climbed out onto the window frame.

The school compound was also flooded with moonlight; the incomparable brightness.
“Aiiee!”

I climbed onto the window sill.
I shouted and jumped off into the school yard.

“Ai!!!”
I landed somehow and immediately started running. I ran through the wet grass, then looked back.

I shouted as I jumped into the school field.
My eyes swept over the entirety of the wooden schoolhouse.

After I hit the ground I picked up my pace immediately. Stepping on the wet grass, I made a squelching sound. I turned and took in the entirety of the wooden school building.
The tiled roof appeared silver in the moonlight. The windows looked like black holes and the walls were gray. A pleasant breeze was blowing. There was the high-pitched hum of insects.

The tiled roof that flashed a silver glow, the windows which were like dark holes, the grey walls; a slight breeze blew, the insects sang loudly.
“Oi!”

“Hey!”
At the same time as the voice cried out, the second floor window loudly shattered and fell.

Just as I heard the sound, a second floor window was exaggeratedly shattered and fell to the ground.
“Ehh?”

“Ah ne?”
Accompanying the wild shout, Bou-san’s figure appeared from the window frame.

Together with the fallen window, I could see Bou-san’s figure.

“Bou-san!”
“Bou-san!”

I waved to Bou-san, then I felt my head start to hurt.
As I waved my hand, something troubling occurred to me.

– Eh?
—Would he do that?

“What’s up?”
“What’s up?”

“I’m thinking about the problem of age and appearances.”
“I’m thinking about the problem of age and method.”

Bou-san’s voice passed very clearly into my ear.
Bou-san’s voice carried a long way.

“What’s up?”
“What’s that?”

“Nothing. Forget it!
“Oh well, nevermind.”

I meant that I did not expect him to actually jump down through the window – at that mature age he still doesn’t think before he acts. Saying that, he just jumped down from a second floor window. In reality there isn’t anything much wrong with doing this at his age, but when he landed he didn’t land steadily, therefore points are deducted!
As soon as I said this, he lightly climbed over the window frame. Of course, before I could tell him it wasn’t something an old man should do, he jumped from the second floor window. Certainly, it was the proper execution for the method, but he lost points for staggering upon landing.

“Ya—you really are still young!
“My, you’re still young, aren’t you?

Hearing the voice I saw Yasuhara stick his head out from the second floor.
When I heard this and looked, Yasuhara-san’s face appeared from a window at the end of the second floor.

Bou-san turned towards the school.
Bou-san looked back at the school building.

“Then show me the skills of a young man!
“Yo, why don’t you show me the skills of a true young man?

“Ai—do you want me to jump down from here?”
“Eeeh? You expect me to jump down, too?”

“You really are still young, are you not?”
“You’re young, aren’t you?”

“Then can you catch me, Bou-san?”
“Will you catch me?”

“I refuse!
“I refuse.

“Whatever! The pair of you are behaving shamelessly.
“What kind of shameful things are you doing?

This was the voice of Ayako, who stuck her head out from the first floor.
Ayako called this out as her face appeared from a window on the first floor.

“Wa! Ayako – it’s been a long time since we’ve met!”
“Yay! Ayako! Long time no see!”

“Really, long time indeed. I was just thinking about where you disappeared to.”
“It really was a long time, huh? I was wondering where you disappeared to.”

I laughed.
I laughed.

“I did not disappear. It was you who disappeared—”
“I didn’t disappear. You’re the one who was gone, Ayako!”

“Don’t quibble!”
“Don’t quibble!”

“Ah, ha ha ha ha.”
“Ahahaha!”

It’s the truth, though!

The truth of what really happened –
The door to the entry hall opened. Naru was the first to come out from there. When I waved, he looked away in seeming indifference. —Tch.

The door to the vestibule opened. The first one to come out was Naru, who waved his hand before walking uninterestedly in the other direction.
Following him out was Lin-san’s tall figure.

– Tch!
“Lin-san, you too, long time no see!

Following him was the tall figure of Lin-san.
When I called out, he stopped as if a little startled, then nodded to me. Next, Masako came out with quick little steps.

“Lin-san, it’s also been a long time!”
“Mai!”

Hearing my voice, Lin-san stopped momentarily and nodded to me. Following closely behind was Masako, taking quick little steps.
“Yoo-hoo, Masako! How have you been?”

“Mai!
“What in the world happened? It’s you who I should be asking—”

Masako started to say this, then stopped walking. It seemed like she was going to come running over here, but she changed direction and rushed over to Naru. Such is why a woman’s friendship is fragile.

“Mai-san, were you alright?

“Yo—hey! Masako, how are you?”
Saying that, John jumped down from a first floor window and actually rushed over to me.

“What in the world happened? I should be asking you—”
John is truly kind. *tears*

Saying that, Masako stopped in her tracks. She was originally running in my direction, but when she saw Naru she immediately changed course. Such is the friendship between girls – that honest fellow!
“Yeah. I’m okay.

“Mai, are you alright?
“I’m glad. —Everyone, too.

That was John, who said that while jumping out from a first floor window. Really, John is still the gentlest, wu lu lu!
I looked around at the figures coming over in small groups.

“Yeah – I’m fine!”
Ayako and Yasuhara-san, who had given up on jumping out the window, came out from the entry hall.

“That’s great, everyone’s alright!”
—With that, everyone was together.

Ayako and Yasuhara, who had decided against jumping out through a window, also exited through the vestibule.
“So then? Who did it?”

– Thus, everyone was accounted for.
Everyone tilted their heads at Bou-san’s words.

“Ne? Who did it?”
Hehehe. Only I know that.

Once Bou-san spoke, everyone started thinking.
“Seeing that you asked that, I guess it wasn’t you, Takigawa-san.

Hey hey hey hey hey – this, only I know.
Bou-san choked at Yasuhara-san’s words.

“Since you asked, it looks like it wasn’t you, Takigawa-san.”
“It definitely wasn’t you, Shōnen.”

Without skipping a beat, Bou-san replied to Yasuhara’s words embarrassedly.
“If I did it, wouldn’t that cause everyone to lose face?”

“—Then it wouldn’t be because of this young man either.”
“Yeah, that’s true.”

“If it were me, then wouldn’t that mean that you guys have no foot to stand on?
“It couldn’t possible have been… Shibuya-san. Seeing as he’s walking and standing all right like this.

“Indeed.
Naru lightly shrugged his shoulders.

“It looks like it wasn’t Shibuya either, looking at how you walked out so orderly.”
“I would confess, however it was not me, either.”

Naru shrugged in agreement.
This was said by Masako.

“I think it shouldn’t be Lin-san or Brown, because I saw the light of spirit cleansing, so it was not an exorcism, but a spirit cleansing.”
“I do not think it was Lin-san or Brown-san, either. It was a purification rather than an exorcism. Since I saw the light of purification.”

John nodded.
John nodded.

“Indeed. I didn’t help out at all.”
“Indeed. I couldn’t do anything.”

After that, everyone looked towards Ayako.
Then, everyone’s gaze turned to Ayako.

See, not a single person was of any use. Pu chi pu chi!
Of course, I’m a good-for-nothing…*mumble mumble*

“Me?”
“Me!?”

Ayako pointed at herself, wide-eyed.
After opening her eyes wide, Ayako pointed at herself.

“It wasn’t me! There aren’t any living trees near this place.”
“Tch, no! There aren’t any trees I can rely on in this area.”

Momentarily, everyone exchanged glances.
There was a momentary pause. Then, glances were exchanged.

Ne—why did they leave only me out?
Hey, why are you ignoring me?

“—That leaves one person only.”
“...there’s only one person left.”

It was Yasuhara who spoke.
This was said by Yasuhara-san.

“Could it be, that they cleansed themselves?!
“No way! I vote that they purified themselves.

The one who said this sentence that made me so mad my teeth itched was Ayako.
Ayako was the one who said this hateful thing.

“Alright, it’s all over, let’s go back!
“Well, are we going back?

Too much! It’s pissing me off! Even Bou-san also—
So cruel! *sob* Even Bou-san!

Bou-san walked in the direction of the car while caressing my head; Ayako and Masako patted my back; John and Yasuhara smiled by the side; Lin-san also smiled slightly.
Then, while walking in the direction of the car, Bou-san ruffled my hair. Ayako and Masako also patted my back. Next were John and Yasuhara-san’s smiling faces and Lin-san’s auspicious smile. And then Naru spoke a single phrase.

Then, Naru said a line,
“...Thanks for the hard work.”

“—Thanks for your hard work!”
—Well, whatever.

– Ma, forget it.

Chapter 9 - August 14th, 12 midnight – 1:00 am[edit]

1
[edit]

I abruptly returned to myself and woke up.

A deep darkness lay before my eyes. I was leaning against the door, nearly lying down.

“A failure...”

I failed.

—He’s obstinate.

I don’t think there are any words that can persuade someone who’s become so obstinate.

“...Kirishima...sensei.”

I understand his pain. I understand, but I cannot leave this as it is.

I will purify those children and ensure one never dies here again. I have to stop the loneliness.

And Kirishima-sensei.

He lost his life, and to make matters worse, he grieved the loss of his student’s lives. In an effort to erase it all, he became an obstinate person.

I understand his feelings, but I think he’s a very gentle person.

Even so, I want to look after my companions just like he wanted to look after his students. I want us all to meet safely, leave this school together, and say, “See you later.”

Consequently, I remembered Naru’s words.

“Oh, I see now...”

How stupid of me!

“I was told I shouldn’t show them pity or sympathy.”

I smacked my head.

It was pointless even if I scolded myself. I needed to imbue them with light.

“Alright!”

Murmuring to myself, I stood up energetically.

“I’ll try it again.”

***

I opened the classroom door. Somehow, I felt it would be pointless no matter how much I called out from here.

—I’ll go to the classroom.

The place that Kirishima-sensei and the children are particular about. Because, undoubtedly, that place will be at least a little warmer for both the children and Sensei.

Within the darkness, as I walked towards the stairs, feeling my way along the wall with my hand, there was a slight clatter. When I stopped for a moment, the sound grew closer from in front of me.

As I remained still, a small, black shadow appeared alongside the wall. My pulse elevated slightly.

—’It’s dangerous,’ passed through my mind.

I wonder, is wariness a positive ‘feeling’ or a negative ‘feeling’?

I took a deep breath.

“...Hey, let’s go to the classroom.”

The approaching shadows momentarily stopped.

“Well, shall we go back to the classroom?”

I crouched down.

I mustn’t think of them as monsters. Those in front of me now are children. If a person is made of ‘body’ and ‘spirit’, then these children have no body.

—I love children.

Children are small and soft, and of course they’re brazenly mouthy and say spiteful things, but even so, they possess an atmosphere that makes it unable to resist hugging them.

I remembered that, after I started worked at ‘Shibuya Psychic Research’, I met a variety of children while going on investigations. I smiled lightly.

There were three small children in the house in Noto where we had been until now. We became good friends while our stay there dragged on. When it was time to go home, I was happy that they told me, “Please come again,” with tearful expressions. I wonder what everyone is doing now. —Well, naturally, they’re probably sleeping right now.

A genuine smile escaped.

“Well, would you like to go to the classroom? Shall we go together?”

The children tilted their heads a little. It was a truly endearing, child-like gesture.

“I’d like to see everyone in class and Kirishima-sensei. I want to say I’m sorry for being mean earlier… oh, was that a dream or reality?”

Like before, the children continued to tilt their heads, unmoving.

“I don’t really know. —Still, I feel that I need to say sorry. So, shall we go to the classroom? Will you take me?”

The children looked at each other once again, then moved awkwardly and turned their backs. Taking a few steps, they began walking towards the stairs.

“...thank you.”

***

After we went to the stairs, I saw some children at the bottom of the staircase. I walked without worrying and descended the stairs. None of them were a danger to me. I was gladdened by this and my mood steadily brightened.

—Well, such simplicity is necessary.

There were also two or so children in the entry hall and, as I smiled at them and walked towards the classroom, they toddled after me. Ten or so children followed around me and it was something enjoyable. Before long, the smallest child beside me raised her thin, fragile hand and I took ahold of it.

As soon as I grasped the small hand, which felt like a withered branch, my chest swelled with affection.

2
[edit]

When I entered the classroom, there were a great deal of children inside. Children were seated at the desks, children gathered at the back of the classroom, children walked between the desks. They were doing a variety of things. It was as though I had really entered a classroom at recess.

There was a large shadow seated at the desk adjacent to the teaching podium. It was about the size of an adult and resembled a demon without horns. Sensei stood up. He remained standing, silently watching me.

“I’m sorry about earlier.”

I lightly bowed my head to Sensei, then also bowed my head to the children who were looking in my direction.

“I’m sorry.”

Saying that, I looked around the classroom.

“I’m sorry that I spoke cruelly. But, I'll say the same thing. Please don’t increase your friends anymore.”

Sensei took a step. I looked at him directly.

“Please return my companions.”

He took another step, the distance between us drawing nearer.

“Just like Sensei cares for everyone, my companions are important to me, too.”

Saying that, I looked around the classroom.

“Just like everyone loves Sensei and their friends, I really love my companions, too.”

Naru and Lin-san. Ayako and Masako. Bou-san, John, and Yasuhara-san.

Ever since we met by chance up until today, there have been things that were warm and gentle.

“Naru seems like an extremely cold-hearted person, but actually, there’s a part of him that’s surprisingly gentle. He’s good at magic tricks. There was a time before when he gave me encouragement me with that.”

All of a sudden, there was a noise and light illuminated the inside of the classroom. It was merely the clouds drifting apart and the moonlight shining in, but in a way, I felt greatly encouraged.

“Lin-san, too. Though he’s extremely expressionless, reticent, and difficult to approach, I think he’s actually a gentle person nonetheless. Also, because he’s such a person, when I receive a smile from him every once in a while, I feel like I’ve earned something. I feel like it’s a very good sign and it makes me happy.”

Although, he’s only given me enough smiles to count on one hand.

Still, everyone’s pretty nice.”

Actually, when I think about it, all of them have poor demeanors.

“Ayako is actually a really caring person. She’s noisy, though. In fact, she always fusses over me. I like it. It reminds me of my mother and makes me happy.”

Although, my mother was a bit quieter.

“Whenever I talk to Ayako, it cheers me up. That’s why I love her. I’m glad that I get lectured by Bou-san like I’m being scolded by a father. I really like it when he pushes me around with his big hands and pats my head. But it’s a secret, okay?”

If it got out, that guy would forever be emboldened by it.

No matter how serious a situation, when I hear Yasuhara-san’s jokes or his and Bou-san’s comic dialogue, it makes me feel like we’ll be able to manage one way or another.”

—Yeah, I really love them all.

“Therefore, I want you to return them. Because they’re all important to me. I love being with all of them. I want to leave the school building with them and return to Tokyo together. The office will be gone, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll never see each other again.”

Saying this, I smiled slightly in embarrassment.

“...Yeah, I thought we might not meet again, but I felt like I’d be laughed at if I said, ‘Let’s get together even if the office closes.’ But I know that’s unlikely.”

I’m pretty stupid.

Kirishima-sensei was watching me.

The children filling the classroom were also watching me.

“Therefore, return everyone. Then, I want you to stop bringing more friends.”

My hand was lightly tugged and I remembered I was still holding the small child’s hand. The light of the moon was bright in my eyes, which had gotten used to the darkness, and I could clearly see that the child’s form was not human.

The imp that held my hand was staring up at me. I gave her a small smile.

“I think there are people who treasure and worry for the friends you brought here just like I treasure and worry for all my companions. Like me, I think there are people that they love. Not being able to see the people you love is painful. If my loved ones disappeared, I would be sad. I think that’s the same for everyone, too.”

3
[edit]

“The same?”

The child holding my hand was the one who spoke.

“Yeah. —What’s your name?”

“Sugiura Ayano.”

Ayano-chan’s back straightened and before I knew it, she was standing upright. The hand I was holding, which had been so slender, thickened and felt slightly soft.

“Ayano-chan, you love your father, right?”

“I love him.”

“You love your mother, too, right?”

“Yeah!”

“I love my companions, too. It’s the same as Ayano-chan.”

“It is the same, huh?”

“Yeah. You love Sensei, too, right?”

“I really love him!”

I laughed.

“Because he’s a very gentle and good teacher, right?”

“Yeah!”

The face of a ten-year-old girl overlapped her nodding face.

“But it’s scary when he gets angry.”

“Ah, I see!”

“He’s really good at the horizontal bars.”

“Really.”

“But, he’s a little tone deaf.”

I laughed and looked at everyone in the classroom.

“Does everyone love Sensei, too?”

When I asked, their voices returned, ‘I love him!’

“If Sensei disappeared, it’d be lonely, right? You wouldn’t like it, right?”

They nodded their small faces.

“In that same way, all the transfer students had someone who became lonely.”

A hush fell over the class.

“Because you were all lonely, you brought children to play. But, just like you, the children had a teacher that they loved….therefore, don’t do it anymore.”

The children were all seated. The classroom was flooded with moonlight.

“I have no mother and father, but I’m not lonely because I have my companions. Will everyone be sad if you only have one classroom despite having Sensei and your friends?”

“Not at all!”

I heard a voice from behind me and when I looked back, it was Tsugumi-kun.

I patted Tsugumi-kun’s head.

“Well done! That a boy!”

“Yeah!”

I smiled at Tsugumi-kun, then looked at Kirishima-sensei. He no longer looked like a demon. The man hung his head and cast his eyes downward.

“Everyone loves Sensei tremendously.”

“......”

“I think it’s really nice that there are teachers who love their students and students who love their teacher.”

“...Is that so?”

“Yes.”

Sensei remained silent for a long while. Eventually, he spoke absently,

“It’s possible that I might be a very lucky person... ”

“...Yes.”

It was as I nodded. A light shone from behind. When I looked back, a bright light was shining through the gaps in the classroom door directly behind me. When I opened the door, it was midday outside.

Although it was dark inside here until just now, it didn’t seem blinding in the slightest. Just outside the door was a meadow rather than a corridor. Beautiful, soft green grass went on forever and the area was drenched in a downpour of brilliant light.

‘Wow...’ the children softly exclaimed.

Sensei looked outside in awe, then looked around the inside of the classroom.

“—Everyone, should we go on another field trip?”

There was a small shout of joy.

“Are we going on the bus?”

It was Mariko-chan who asked so uneasily.

“No, we won’t use the bus. We’re all going to walk there.”

“That’s a relief, then, Sensei.”

“Yeah. It’ll be okay.”

Smiling, Kirishima-sensei walked towards the door. I stepped aside just a bit and vacated the space. Sensei stood beside the door.

“Let’s go! —The smaller children should hold hands with their upperclassmen. Watch your step and don’t fall behind!”

‘Okay!’ they responded cheerfully.

Then, the children left the classroom one after another. Some of the children ran out by themselves and others grabbed the hands of the smaller children.

Sensei watched over them, and then he held out his hand toward Ayano-chan, who had held onto my hand and didn’t let go until the end.

“Ayano, too. Let’s go.”

“Okay.”

Ayano-chan released my hand and took ahold of Sensei’s. She looked back and waved her tiny hand.

“Bye-bye, Onee-chan!”

“Bye-bye!”

Kirishima-sensei bowed his head slightly. Immediately after, he tugged on Ayano-chan’s hand and exited the classroom. The door closed. —Then I was left behind inside the classroom.

Dust had accumulated on the floor and covered the desks and chairs. That was all that remained within the classroom. The deserted space was fully saturated in the pale light of the moon.

I cried a little just then, but it definitely wasn’t because I was in pain.

4
[edit]

I went out into the corridor and stopped for a moment. I stared at the closed window.

When I gently reached out my hand and tried to move it, it creaked, but opened a little regardless. The gentle night breeze drifted in. I was greeted by the smell of wet grass.

I smiled complacently and this time opened the window with all my might. The old, hard to open window got caught, but opened wide nonetheless.

“Hehehe...”

The school yard was also drenched in a downpour of moonlight and was very bright.

I climbed out onto the window frame.

“Aiiee!”

I shouted and jumped off into the school yard.

I landed somehow and immediately started running. I ran through the wet grass, then looked back.

My eyes swept over the entirety of the wooden schoolhouse.

The tiled roof appeared silver in the moonlight. The windows looked like black holes and the walls were gray. A pleasant breeze was blowing. There was the high-pitched hum of insects.
