This is the tradition of Tanabata, a festival celebrating the meeting of two stars Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair)

Given that Kyon and Haruhi are in class 1-5, shouldn't the school years they're attending be given in japanese style too.
Kyon and co are in year 1 of high school, not year 11, otherwise the class would be 11-5. Kyon's sister is said to be in 5th grade (or going into 5th), shouldn't this be "Year 1 of Middle school."
