Volume 1: As a Perceiver in L.A

Chapter 2

The following week, George and I started working on changing the operating system for the Perceiver. We hit an obstacle where we could not figure out how to create a system where one could not bypass the original operating system. This meant that it was nearly impossible to limit what the Perceiver could do because people could always hack the Perceiver in order to do whatever they want with it. Giving limited user access to a Perceiver would only act as a small barrier which will do nothing in the long run. I let out a great big sigh. “I just wanted to make the society a safer place for everyone. Apparently, it has backfired on me. The Perceiver just makes crimes easier to commit,” I confessed to George. “You know… It is impossible to stop crime. I actually really don’t understand why you are trying so hard to make this world a perfect place,” George replied bitterly. “No! There must be a way to stop all this nonsense! I will definitely not give up on using my technology to make the world a better place!” I demanded. At that point, George turned his head away from me and giggled. A part of me is starting to resent George for the way he thinks about this world. The next day, I drove home from my company after a long day’s work on the Perceiver. I realized that I have not visited the bank for quite some time. I drove to the Bank of Los Angeles, which in the past decade, has increased its security exponentially due to the economic collapse of 2015. In most cases, in order to withdraw money from the Bank of Los Angeles, the reason for withdrawal must be stated before the money is released to the patron. Afterward, the money will be tracked in order to determine whether the transactions made with that money corresponds with the “reason for withdrawal” statement aforementioned. However, since I am the owner of one of the largest corporations in the United States, I have the privilege to withdraw money whenever it is needed, without going through such security. The sky was cloudy, yet the air was hot. The moment I arrived at the bank, I procured a bizarre feeling. I became nervous. I did not have time to visit the bank since I began working on updating the Perceiver. I went to the outdoors ATM to check my balance. I put my finger on a holographic screen where the screen took me to my account options. I pressed on my account balance. Then another screen popped up. My heart sank as I looked at the numbers that showed. Account Balance: $ 0.00 USD What?! I have no money? I went back to my account options and pressed on “Trad Corporation Account Details.” Another message popped up saying that my account is no longer available. Then I realized, I have been hacked somehow. Somewhere, somehow, someone managed to hack into my bank account.

Chapter 3

The first thing I thought about was: how can I continue to work on the project with no money? How is this possible when there is so much security at the Bank of Los Angeles? I immediately called George to tell him about company’s balance through the Perceiver. The call immediately went to voicemail and I was notified that his Perceiver was shut off. Then it hit me. I made a huge mistake. I was so caught up on updating the Perceiver that I forgot about the administrative functions that I gave George. Even though I did not give him full administrative powers, he still had sufficient access to hack me. I went on my Perceiver and hacked back into the Trad Corporation’s database where I looked at George’s account. Everything in his account was no longer available. However, he left a message in his inbox.

“You fool. You believe you can change the world. You have no idea what you’re dealing with. I can’t believe you are dumb enough to leave your fingerprints on my Perceiver which allowed me to easily hack into your company’s database and bank account.” I was baffled. I absolutely could not believe what just happened. I have been cheated by my very own creation! I have been trying to prevent others from committing crimes, yet I became the victim of crime. I lost millions of dollars. I lost the company I have founded and built for the last 18 years. Now, I am left with nothing. I collapsed to the ground realizing that everything I have worked for fell apart in a mere moment. Then I heard a small rumbling from a distance. The sound got louder and louder. That’s when I realized that an earthquake was occurring. My day could not have been any worse. I got up and started running for my life, forgetting about the money that I had lost. At that moment, I thought to myself: everything will fall down, only to be rebuilt into something better.
