Suggestion: 'not a trace of the fact that he had apologized in his own words was left in [name]'s behavior' - > '[name]'s own behavior showed how mistaken his words were'. Since it's 'shoumei suru' rather than a negative, 'ayamatte'ita' appears to be from 'ayamatsu' (to err) rather than 'ayamaru' (to apologise, different kanji).
