- The Fox of Chironuppu" (チロヌップのきつね)
Chapter One: The Birth of the Cub
北の海に、 チロヌップという小さな島があります。 ゆたかなしぜんの中で、 たくさんの動物や小鳥、 魚たちが、 平和にくらしています。
Within the northern ocean, lies a small island called Chironuppu. Among the abundant nature, a great many animals, small birds and fish, live together in harmony.
春、 きつねざくらがさくころになると、 きまったように、 島にやってくる、 おじいさんとおばあさんがいました。
In Spring, during the blooming of the Kitsune Zakura, an old man and old woman came to the island.
それは、 せんそうが、 はげしくなった年のことでした。
A war had come that violent year.
北の海にうかぶこの島の、 きびしい冬が、 終わろうとしていました。 ふりつづいた雪がやんで、 島のまわりに、 一面、 氷のかたまりが流れつきはじめたのです。
As for the floating island in the northern ocean, a harsh winter had finally ended. The continuous snow had finally ceased, and along one side of the circular island, the ice had started to melt.
しらかば林のおくにある、 あなの中で、 きつねのこが二ひき、 生まれました。 おすのぼうやぎつねと、 めすのちびこぎつねです。
Inside a hole within the white birch forest, two fox cubs were born. One was a baby boy, and one was a baby girl.
おかあさんぎつねは、 だいじに二ひきをだきかかえ、 おっぱいをあげました。
The mother fox, holding close the precious two, was letting them suckle.
すっかり春になり、 野原は緑とはなで、 いっぱいになりました。 子ぎつねたちも、 だいぶ大きくなったようです。
When spring was complete, the field was filled with greenery and flowers. The young foxes had already grown quite big.
ぼうやきつねは元気もの。 よちよち歩いて、 外へ出ていってしまいます。 あたりのようすが、 めずらしくてしかたありません。
The boy fox was full of energy. Tottering while walking, he had made his way to the outside. The appearance of the area, was very pleasant.
おかあさんぎつねは、 心配でたまらないようすです。
The mother fox had no worries.
ちびこぎつねは、 あまえんぼ。 いつまでも、 おかあさんのおっぱいからはなれません。
The baby girl fox was like a spoiled child. For as long as it could, she did not want to separate from her mother's milk.
とうとうおかあさんは、 ちびこの首をくわえて、 外へつれだしました。 ぼうやのようにやんちゃなのもこまるけれど、 少しは外のことをしらなくてはなりません。 でも、 ちびこは首からぶらさがったまま、 おろおろするばかりです。
Finally the mother fox, holding onto the baby’s neck, carried her outside. The boy was moving in mischievous circles, trying to understand all sorts of things. But, the little one hanging by her neck was merely flustered.
なん日かすぎ、 二ひきはすっかり外のせかいになれたよう…。
Several days pass, and the two have completely experienced the outside world.
そこでおとうさんぎつねは、 子ぎつねたちに、 えもののにおいをかぎわけることを、 教えました。 なんのにおいかわからないと、 自分でえものをとれないからです。
Outside, the Father Fox taught the young ones how to sniff out and discern different things by their smell. The river had no scent, and instead removed ones scent.
はじめにおとうさんは、 ねずみのにおいを、 子ぎつねたちにおぼえさせます。
The first smell the father fox wanted the two young foxes to remember, was that of the mouse.
それからおとうさんは、 そのねずみを、 やぶの中や土の中にかくします。 子ぎつねたちに気づかれないように、 そっと…。
After that, father took the mouse inside a thicket and underground. It was done softly, in order for the fox cubs not to notice.
そのあとで、 子ぎつねたちをよびました。
A bit later, the fox cubs called out.
「さっきのにおいを思いだして、 ねずみをさぎしてごらん」
“Following the earlier scent, we searched for the mouse.”
ぼうやぎつねは、 すぐかけだし、 ヒクヒクと鼻を鳴らしてかぎまわります。 ちびこも、 あとをついてまわります。
The boy cub, a recent beginner, was twitching his nose and moving in circles, sniffing. The girl cub was also doing this, following the circles of the boy.
ねずみをさがしあてた子ぎつねは、 両親のところへしらせにいきました。
Finally finding out where the mouse was, the cubs noticed they had arrived at the place where the parents were.
「よくやったぞ。 これでおまえたちも、 一人前だな」
“Excellent Job. This is where you become adults.”
しばらくして、 ふと気がつくと、 ちびこのすがたが見あたりません。 しらん顔で、 あそびにいってしまったようです。
Then it was realized, that the girl cub hadn't really searched. She was off playing instead.
「ちびこは、 どうした？」
“Little one, what’s wrong?”
「ちょうちょうと、 遊びにいったよ」
“Wai-wait, I want to play.”
ぼうやが、 答えます。
The boy then responded.
「あのこは、 まだなんにも、 わからないのよ。 早くさがさなくちゃ」
“She doesn’t know anything yet. Hurry up and search.”
