Epilogue: Those Witches Still Haven’t Mastered Their Brooms[edit]

The results of the official practice exam had been announced.

It was all anyone was talking about at Carraway Cs Preparatory School, and probably every other prep school too. It might as well have been a special event for Temple School City.

The old meal center that had loomed over a section of the city had already withdrawn and disappeared.

“Heh.”

Melehe Superlative’s results went without saying. She didn’t see the need to announce that she had achieved Rank A. From here on, she was facing a battle against herself to see if she could keep that performance up as she flew toward the top.

So she showed no interest in the parchment results sheet.

“About Arbamini, Holibre, and Lampans. …I hear you let them go.”

“Dealing with them isn’t a tutor’s job.”

“Even though they might attack again?”

Myousou Yagoro seriously doubted they would. Those three had lost everything when their friend betrayed them. But during this official practice exam, they had seen other witches feel real anger and selflessly fight for the sake of their friends. Even if their wicked designs bore fruit, they now knew they wouldn’t obtain anything like that.

“You’re still worrying over the fourth girl, aren’t you?”

“Uh…”

“(But I’ve never heard of anyone other than me getting into Maleficium on the first try.)”

“Eh?” Melehe turned back toward him in surprise.

Yagoro whispered to the girl he had shared some of his secrets with.

“(That means she may have had an advantage, but it wasn’t enough for her to pass, don’tcha think?)”

“Ha…ha ha ha. Sigh.”

That just showed how challenging the entrance exam was. Talent wasn’t enough to pass and no simple stopgap measure would work. No one who neglected their daily studies could win. And considering that the fourth had felt a need to improve herself in that way, it wasn’t hard to guess what her unenhanced abilities were like.

As for the dunce girl…

“Hooray! I went up a rank. Look, look, Dorothea. I’m Rank E!! It’s like a dream come true!! I achieved my goal. I’m on fire. I finally broke free of Rank F!”

I-I didn’t even know there was a Rank F. Eep.

Viocia must not have been able to make out Dorothea’s quiet voice because she only blinked in confusion.

Now, the practice exam had tasked the students with searching out four numbers hidden within the labyrinthine old meal center. Rank E was probably for anyone who managed to find a single number, no matter how long it took. Still, she had done well considering most of the witches had frozen up with fear.

Dorothea was now feeling thoroughly foolish for worrying so much about being stuck at Rank C that she relied on a sketchy guaranteed weight loss talisman, but that was a separate issue.

“So you just barely squeaked by, huh? What crucial period of time does a witch divide into 8 sections? Do you know the answer, Viocia?”

“A year! And I’ll continue working for the rest of this one!!”

Yes, they were still at the start of the year. She was only at Rank E now, but if she went up at least a rank with each practice exam, she could reach Rank A or higher by the time the real entrance exam came along. Of course, this was a matter of the mind, which meant there wouldn’t be such a simple correlation between the time spent and her academic ability, but that was still Yagoro’s hope.

Formula Broom – Wittenberg.

That broom had the abnormal estimated rank of S3, but it had answered Viocia’s call. He knew she had the potential. Even if her efforts were often misguided and wasted, he wouldn’t let anyone say she ever neglected to work toward her goal on a daily basis.

It didn’t matter that she was below average now. It was a tutor’s job to make sure she passed in the end.

Although she didn’t seem to be thinking quite so long-term at the moment.

In fact, she had traded her quill and parchment for a wrench and screwdriver.

“Heh heh heh☆ All done! Well, Moloch? Can you see my hand?”

When Viocia smiled and waved a hand, a bronze bull provide a slow, metallic groan.

“Um, Viocia?” Dorothea nervously interrupted. “Eep. A-are you really going to take him back to your room?”

“If I’m going to be a witch, I need my own potion-mixing cauldron!”

+1 point. Well, he is apparently a giant industrial pressure cooker.

The building had gone back to wherever it came from, but Viocia had dragged Moloch and the others outside before that. And since Moloch seemed to prefer to go with Viocia than remain in the defunct building, Yagoro hadn’t stopped her.

“Now to fix the rest of them too. I’ve gotta have the complete set!”

“Ah…ah ha ha.”

A witch used magic to bring people together. A witch reached out a helping hand to anyone in need.

A witch was someone anyone could go to for advice.

In that sense, maybe Viocia was already an excellent witch.

The girl didn’t hesitate to speak with a beaming smile on her face.

“Teacher, teach me all about herbs. I need to use Moloch as soon as possible!”
