Malga Naruze & Margot Naito
The two of them were based on the Naruse and Naitou surnames and, while it isn’t really specified in the story, I personally imagine Naruse as being Naruse Masanari who led their gunner squad at the age of 17 and, because Urquiaga is Naitou Kiyonari who Shinjuku’s Naito Shinjuku was named after, I imagine Naitou as being Naitou Masanari who was counted among the Sixteen Divine Tokugawa Generals as a veteran archer. So it was me going “Nice! Double Masanari!” that led me to give them similar names.
Their names both start with “ma” as a reference to Masanari. Yes, the names that led to the confusing white and black or gold and black coloration actually had a good reason behind it. …Well, maybe not that good a reason.
When the Naitou clan stationed their gunner squad in Shinjuku, the Naruse gunner squad was also stationed there, so I wondered if the two clans had any kind of interaction and maybe those were the two strongest gunner squads defending the Shinjuku region.
Their design concept was white and black witches. Making them witches and giving them wings seems like overdoing it, but I thought it was worth it because the wings help establish the setting. Bearing six wings comes with a lot of pressure in my series, but they can bounce back from that with their combination and the intensity of their personalities.
Their hats and ribbons are meant to indicate their jobs, but those accents may be why they’re so popular with the female readers.
