Army Ranks[edit]
Tytania is a space opera novel with a heavy focus on the military. Japanese army ranks can translate in many ways depending on context. So to be consistent, translation will assume that ranks follow the former Japanese Imperial Navy unless context dictates otherwise:
- 司令長官 commander-in-chief
- 元帥 fleet admiral
- 大将 admiral, “full” admiral
- 中将 vice-admiral
- 少将 rear-admiral
- 准将 commodore
- 大佐 captain
- 中佐 commander
- 少佐 lieutenant-commander
- 大尉 lieutenant
- 中尉 sub-lieutenant
- 少尉 ensign
- 兵曹長 chief warrant-officer
- 上等兵曹 chief petty officer
- 一等兵曹 first-class petty officer
- 二等兵曹 second-class petty officer
- 兵長 leading seaman
- 上等兵 senior seaman
- 一等兵 first-class seaman
- 二等兵 second-class seaman
