“Fuuuah.”

“It’s rare isn’t it, Kou? You actually managed to get up by yourself.”

“I went to sleep early, so I got just the right amount of sleep.” Koutarou and Kenji were walking side by side on the morning road. It was early morning on a Sunday too, so there weren’t many cars or people either, the only things that could be seen were Koutarou and Kenji walking along the pavement. “How many times do I have to say it, I’m living alone and I’m an independent adult now, McKenzie-kun.”

“I’ve wanted that for so long.”

“Well it’s happened.”

“I wonder… By the way, what about the thing from before.” Kenji’s face and voice suddenly turned serious, noticing that, Koutarou frowned slightly.

“‘Thing from before’?”

“Yeah, the thing about the room?”

“The room… Ah! The ghost thing!” Finally understanding Kenji’s worried face, Koutarou clapped his hands to his smiling face. “The ghost didn’t come out.”

“Didn’t come out?”

“Yeah, nothing happened before I went to bed, and afterwards everything was quiet; think about it, if there really was a ghost, there’s no way I’d have gotten up in time today.”

“That’s true, you’re bad at getting up, so if you hadn’t had enough sleep there’s no way you’d be up.” Kenji’s face relaxed a little.

“Hahaha, but McKenzie, you believe in ghosts then?”

“Huh?”

“It’s just you’re always so scientific, so worrying about ghosts is…” Koutarou poked at Kenji’s cheek teasingly.

“It’s fine, it’s not like adherents of scientific culture don’t hate ghosts too.”

“If you’re scared, say you’re scared, you’re not honest.”

“Yeah, I’m scared, I’m scared, ghosts might exist, but the horrible job is having to come wake you up every morning.”

“Oi, you!”

And then as Koutarou dropped his shoulders, they reached in front of the school. Prefectural Institute Kitsushouharukaze Senior High School. The school both would attend from tomorrow. The school was around twenty minutes walk from the nearest station, Harukaze Station, and also the same distance from Corona House. So the school, station and Corona House formed an equilateral triangle, and inside that triangle there were town features collected.

The school was established immediately following the merging of the surrounding municipalities. Kitsushou city and Harukaze city merged, so a school had to be built that would accommodate both sets of children. Before the merging, the school in the area was undergoing re-organisation anyway so Kitsushouharukaze school naturally became a large school. It wasn’t one of the schools that you would expect to find in a built up urban area, but the biggest kind of school you’d see in the suburbs.

“Fight, fight fight! Fight Harukaze!”

Thanks to this, even though it was the spring term, students doing club activities were in the courtyard.

“The baseball club huh… The spring tournament is over so it’s take over time I guess…”

“It’s really lively isn’t it, if new kids go in, it’ll get better.”

Looking at the uniformed students exercising, the two of them passed in front of the main gate. It was just a little further to where they worked.

“...”

As they passed the gate, Koutarou remained staring. Throwing the ball, swinging the bat, running, catching; up until recently, that had been Koutarou.

“Hey, Kou… Are you sure you’re alright, not joining the baseball club?” Kenji asked in an unusually earnest voice.

“It’s fine. I’m living alone, and I’ve got work, trying to do all three would be impossible.” With that, Koutarou looked away from the school yard and smiled towards Kenji.

“Kou…” Koutarou’s smiling face looked a little lonely to Kenji.

“Anyway, I’m joining the Knitting Society, so I shouldn’t be that pessimistic.”

“Oh yeah, that, the Knitting Society.”

“Yeah?”

“Are you serious about joining one of those clubs?”

“Yup, I’m seriously serious.”

Actually, Koutarou had decided to accept the invitation to the Knitting Society when he’d passed the exams.

“No way, no matter how I think about it, it really doesn’t suit you…” Kenji said whilst staring at his body. A large torso, a solid build, big hands. Kenji couldn’t see Koutarou doing something like knitting or handicrafts. If he’d had to say, pulling things apart would have been his forte.
