Baritsu, while fictional, is not an invention of the author of this novel. Instead, it is the invention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as the name given to the eastern martial art Sherlock Holmes used against Professor Moriarty in their showdown in The Final Problem, which is in turn derived from a mis-spelling of the actual eclectic martial art bartitsu, developed by an Englishman by the name of Edward William Barton-Wright, who based it on his experiences with Japanese martial arts, and was somewhat popular during Doyle's time.
