かつては船だった。

Before, it was by boat.

新島に着くまでで半日もたっぷりは揺られなきゃならなかったんだからな。

It used to be we had to sway and rock the whole half day trip to reach Niijima.

しかし、あんな小さな飛行機には乗ったことがない。

However, I've never gotten on such a tiny plane.

でっかいジャンボジェット機ならあるんだが、こんなスモールサイズは初体験だ。

I've already flown in a huge Jumbo Jet, but it's my first experience in such a small one.

これも、弛みない筋トレと怪しげな通販の筋力増強剤のお陰だろうなぁ。

I guess that's also thanks to the non-stop muscle training I did, and the suspicious drugs for reinforcing muscle strength I mail-ordered.

早々に身長が伸びきった譲治兄貴を１０ｃｍも超えて見下ろせる日が来ようとは、夢にも思わなかったぜ。

So anyway, he's one of my cousins.

名前は右代宮譲治（うしろみやじょうじ）。

俺より５つ上だから、今年で多分２３のはずだ。

Since he's 5 years older than me, he's probably 23 this year.



右代宮のいとこは男２人、女２人なので、兄貴とはいっつも一緒に遊んでた。

Since the Ushiromiya cousins are two boys and two girls, I was always playing with Aniki.

その名残で今も兄貴と呼んでるわけさ。

And because of those memories, that's what I call him now.

I mean, they do say "Leave a boy fer three days and expect an interestin' change", and I do declare, they're sure right!

この恰幅の良さそうな小太りのオヤジは、譲治兄貴の父親の、秀吉（ひでよし）伯父さん。

This old guy with an apparently well-built body and a bit of fat is George-aniki's Dad, Hideyoshi-ojisan.

俺の親父の姉の旦那に当たる。

He's my Dad's older sister's husband.

つまり血の繋がってない伯父ってわけだ。

In other words, we're not blood-related.

とても気さくで子供にやさしく、しかもついでに小遣いのはずみもいい、最高の伯父さんってわけさ。

He's very sociable and nice to kids, and on the top of that he even gives me some allowance, he's the best uncle ever.



印象的な怪しい関西弁風の方言はオリジナル？のもので、本人は生粋の関東人だ。

Is that flashy and suspicious Kansai dialect real? 'cause he's actually from Kanto.

何でも、ビジネスの世界では印象付けが大事とかで、

But anyhow, in the business world impressions are super important,

他の人とは毛色の違う言葉を狙って話すことで自分をより印象付けようという演出らしいんだが。

and with different people he speaks differently, as if acting to impress 'em.

……もっとも、本場の関西人の前では恥ずかしいので、標準語に戻すんだとか。

......And of course, in front of real Kansai people he gets all embarrassed and switches back to standard Japanese.

この叔母さんは、譲治兄貴の母親の、絵羽（えば）伯母さんだ。

This is my Aunt, George-aniki's mother, Eva-obasan.

俺の親父の姉に当たる。

She's my Dad's older sister.

秀吉伯父さんともども、ひょうきんなお人で、昔っからよく俺をからかってくれたもんだぜ。

Together with Hideyoshi-ojisan, they're a funny couple that've been teasing me since long ago.

そのせいで、小さい頃、少々苦手だったこともある。

Because of that, when I was small, they were kinda hard to deal with.

…いや、今でも苦手であることを現在進行形で確認中だがなぁ。

...No, I'm confirming that even now, present progressive, they ARE hard to deal with.

この人は、俺の親父の奥さんに当たる人。

This woman is my father's wife.

名は、右代宮霧江（きりえ）。

Her name is Ushiromiya Kyrie.

会話を少し聞けばわかるだろうが、俺の実の母親じゃない。

Hearing a bit of our banter, you can understand she's not my real mother.



いわゆる継母ってヤツさ。

She's what you'd call a stepmother.

俺の本当のお袋は６年前に死んだ。

My real mom died six years ago.

その後に親父が再婚したのがこの霧江さんってわけだ。

After that, my father remarried, this time with Kyrie-san.



俺もさすがにこの歳だ。

It's understandable for someone my age.

今さら再婚の相手をお袋とは呼べない。

I can't call his second wife "mom" even now.

向こうだって、こんなデカくて血も繋がってない連れ子を息子とは呼びたくないだろう。

And on the other hand, I guess she doesn't want to call "son" her husband's gigantic kid, to whom she's not blood-related.

We don't behave as brats to each other.

そんなわけで、無理に家族ごっこはしないってことにした。

So for the same reason, we just don't play at being family.

家族でなく、近所のお姉さんというような感じで、比較的フランクに接しあうことにしている。

Not being family, she's more like an older girl from the neighborhood to me, and comparitively, I guess we've gotten pretty close.



無理して互いに気持ち悪い思いをするよりは、他人と割り切った方がよっぽど気楽ってもんだ。

Instead of forcing ourselves and feeling bad about it, treating each other in a more simple way gives us a degree of comfort.

霧江さんもその辺りは非常にさばさばした人だったので、お陰で俺たちは何とかうまくやれてるわけだ。

Since Kyrie-san's also an unusually frank person, we make it work well somehow.



そうして、トイレでいない親父の悪口で盛り上がっていると、

その構図は、例え図体が大きくても、いたずらっこな弟にお仕置きする姉という関係そのものだ。

This scene is the very example of a relationship between a mischievous younger brother getting punished by his older sister, no matter how hulking he is.

「絵羽姉さん、そのくらいにしてあげてください。

"Eva-neesan, please leave it at that.

同じ分、後で反対の耳を私が引っ張って伸ばしておきますので。」

絵羽伯母さんが２、３歩、ステップで間合いを取ると、

それで空手だテコンドーだカポエィラだと渡り歩き、…最近は何を習ってんだっけ？

then, she went through karate, tae-kwon-do, capoeira, ... and what is it she's learning now, already?

…まぁとにかく、絵羽伯母さんが、女の武器は下半身とかいう時は、言葉通りの意味を持つってわけさ。

親父と絵羽伯母さんのやり取りを見ていると、まったくのガキの喧嘩にしか見えないな…。

そのうーという声は多分、ややこしい説明が理解できなくてパンクした音なんだろう。

She probably uses that "Uu" sound to punctuate when she can't understand a complicated explanation.

ちょっと説明がややこしかったもんな。

But yeah, that explanation was confusing though.



「真里亞ちゃん。

"Maria-chan.

彼は戦人くん。

This is Battler-kun.

僕と同じ従兄だよ。」

He's your cousin, like me."



「……譲治お兄ちゃんと同じ？

"......Like George-oniichan?

こういう辺り、兄貴は本当にうまいなぁというか、大人だなぁと思う。

６年のブランクを埋め合うように、しばらくの間、俺たちはくるくるとじゃれ合った。

彼女にとっては、未だ初対面のデカい兄ちゃんという域を出ないだろうが、その辺はゆっくり交流していけばいいさ。

As for her, I guess I won't be anything else than the huge Nii-chan of that first meeting, but that'll change in time.

Since she doesn't show her feelings much, it's difficult to know just what she's thinking, but that's just a stubborn question of facial expressions.

内面は人懐っこい普通の女の子と変わりない。

It's kinda rude to say so, but it's exactly the same kind of unbelievable name as my Dad's "Rudolf"... 

にも関わらず、親父と違って捻くれなかった叔母さんは偉い。

In spite of that, Oba-san, who's not completely twisted like Dad, is great.

Between all her siblings, she's the one with the most common sense.

秀吉伯父さんと同じで、いつも子供の味方でいてくれるやさしい叔母さんだ。

Like Hideyoshi-ojisan, she's a kind aunt who'll always be on the kids' side.

……ただ、教育的には厳しいのか、秀吉伯父さんのように小遣いの気前が良かったりはしないのだけが残念だぜ。

"Rosa,  you still haven't gone through boarding procedures, so hurry up.」

滑走路に出る前に金属検査を受ける。

We'll undergo a metal inspection before going to the runway.

国際線のような物々しさはなかったが、小型機とはいえ一応は飛行機だ。

It doesn't have the grandness of the international air routes planes, but though it's a small machine, it's still a plane.

金属探知機を持った職員にボディチェックを受ける。

We'll be body-checked by the staff member holding a metal detector.

並んだ全員がチェックをクリアすると、職員の先導で滑走路に出た。

When everybody lined up is checked to be clear, we leave to the runway guided by the staff member. 

その行列を見てみると、何だ何だ、右代宮一族しかいないぜ。

Looking onto the procession, hello hello what's this? there's no one except the Ushiromiya family.

これじゃまるで、貸切のチャーター機みたいじゃないか。

Like this, it's almost like a reserved charter flight, isn't it?

飛行機の搭乗口前で行列は停まる。

The procession stops in front of the entrance to the airplane.

先導の職員は振り返り、名簿を見ながら言った。
