Wording seems confusing to me (and I don't want to change the meaning) Is he trying to say "When was the last time I saw the sun?" or "why can't I see the sun?"?   Getting more intense by the chapter.
Also, would it be more dramatic to drop contraction's on some sentences? Like "There IS no one in the classroom" instead of "There's".

Is she saying that he has an amazingly complete lack of comprehension, or that his comprehension is peculiar in that he understands some things easily and others not at all, and that it seems to be an arbitrary distinction?
