Chapter 2

Part 1

“……Eh?”

Whoosh~ At the heart of the battlefield, a blast of wind blew through the defeated.

Yu, who was sprawled on the ground, quickly raised her head.

The surroundings had not changed, but a blizzard had painted it white. On the other side of the blizzard, the roaring Two Headed Dragon should have been approaching. But it was strange, clearly the dragon’s presence could be felt coming closer, yet it was slowly realized that there had not been an attack on the civilians’ retreat.

For Yu, who personally understood the ferocious nature of the dragon, this was obviously a strange situation.

It looked as if there was a huge, invisible barrier stopping them. Once Yu realized her mistake―Maxwell was suddenly met with a sharp whirlwind strike.

“What!”

“GEEEYAAAAAaaa!”

Receiving an unexpected attack, Maxwell let out a startled cry. Because he had not anticipated an attack, he was mercilessly flung by the whirlwind, until he finally collided onto the ground.

However, the attack was not finished yet.

The highly compressed air swirled around and continued to strike again and again, creating a distorted sight. But what was most frightening was that the silhouette of the caster of this whirlwind could not be seen, and yet with this difficulty of distance all of the attacks met their target. It was clear that the caster’s strength was abnormal.

"Who……Who is……!"

At first everyone mistakenly thought that the attack came from the twin-headed dragon.

However, the attack that Maxwell had received was a blast of wind that came after air was gathered. Compared to the kind seen from the dragon before, it was completely different. Once a second howl was heard, only Yu realized that it was not the cry of a two headed dragon.

“That sound……it isn’t the twin headed Dragon.”

Even if her five senses were to diminish, her previous experiences would not disappear. Moreover, Yu felt that she had heard that roar before at that place.

It was a noble cry, one that people would not forget. Just as soon as she realized who this sound belonged to―Yu saw something glowing emerge from the sky as it descended.

“A glowing…feather, and parchment?”

Countless scrolls and shimmering golden feathers floated down from the sky. These scrolls that shined brilliantly like the glowing feathers were brighter than the stars, puncturing through the darkness while slowly drifting down.

“No, not only that! Please look over there!”

Her head raised towards the sky, Almathea sounded as if she were in disbelief. Following her, Yu also raised her head and was also shocked into silence. The refugees from before who already lost all reasoning were the same, and some could not believe what they were seeing, rubbing their eyes until they were completely red. [That thing] which appeared from the sky was just that abnormal and enormous.

Yu’s lips trembled as she shook her head, believing that it was surely impossible.

“Flying in the sky is a…castle? How can that be! That thing should still be in [Underwood]……!”

That’s right. Yu clearly knew exactly what the massive, dark object that struck fear into everyone’s heart was.

Previously situated in [Underwood], no matter how much they denied it, what lied in front of them was the vampire flying fortress― [SUN SYCHRONOUS ORBIT IN VAMPIRE KING][1] ‘s platform was now approaching from up above Yu and company’s heads.

“Wait! Look at the flag!”

As everyone silently watched the fortress, one of the [Salmandra] members suddenly pointed at the flag raised and shouted. Once they comprehended what flag was being reflected in their eyes, they quickly realized who it was inside that castle.

“That’s the Draco Grief Alliance flag!”

“It’s Master Sala! Has Master Sala returned to Kouen City!?”

The refugees began to shout. Not only did they see the Draco Grief Alliance, but they also saw several other flags.

金翅神鸟 (Golden-Winged Divine Bird), 相克之蛇 (Poised Snake), 相对双女神(Two Opposing Goddesses)[2]… All of them were some of the strongest guilds’ flags. However, what attracted most of the people’s attention was a particularly noticeable flag.

What was on the flag resembled a golden rice plant growing with the sun rising above the ground, and standing in the center was a goddess, no, a queen.

In the entire heavenly court, there was only one unparalleled demon lord who held such title.

Little Garden’s Number 3 [Queen Halloween]’s flag was raised at the top of the castle, fluttering in the wind.

“It’s the queen! That’s the queen’s flag!”

“Isn’t that the demon lord who’s equally matched with Shiroyasha-sama!”

“But the queen she… Did the queen show herself so boldly just for this floor……?”

Mandora, the leader responsible for the front line of the [Salamandra] troops, was so shocked that even his words quivered.

Ignoring the dazed evacuees, the South District’s Eudemons began to flood out from the flying fortress. However, that was not what only happened, the three-headed dragon clone that had previously showed no signs of attacking now bared his fangs, let out a blood-curdling roar and began to attack the refugees. Mandora unsheathed his sword and shouted:

“Fire dragons split into two groups and provide cover fire! Demi-dragons encircle the refugees and defend them! We must work with [Draco Grief] and lead the refugees to the castle!”

“Sir yes sir!”

There had originally been 4000 fire dragons, but the Three Headed Dragon conjured up a tornado and dwindled their numbers until only around one-third of them remained. In order to withstand these divine-level and yet numerous clones, even if they joined hands with [Draco Grief], their strength was by far not enough.

(Our reinforcements will not only include the queen. Even though I can’t confirm how many forces Onee-sama gathered… I must still fight for some time to let the refugees escape…!)

Even if their reinforcements were more reliable, no matter what time period, the allied forces would need to spend some time practicing to work in sync. And so to adapt to their circumstances, it was important for them to first strengthen their resolve and lose their hesitation in order to buy time for the retreat. As the fire dragons and Mandora’s men were finished preparing to risk their lives, the shadows next to their feet transformed into an unusual shape.

“Alright, alright, stand easy. Remember that you have other duties, so you better not die a meaningless death.”

"Who… Who are you!"

“To have the guts to actually ask me who I am, truly disrespectful. Despite the fact that I’ve known you since you were a child, or― Yihahahahaha! Do I have to use that laugh, in order for you to know?”

The distorted shadow looked as if it had been blown by a gust of warm wind and continuously swayed, and then it morphed into the shape of a person.

Wearing a bowler hat and a swallow-tailed coat, and that uncouth, philistine laughter.

Mandora finally understood exactly who it was, and his face instantly paled.

“You……It can’t be……You are……!”

“……It is how it is. I will take care of the evacuation, you can solely focus on the defense. Even if the Two Headed Dragon clones hold divinity, they’re still newborns who aren’t that big, the fire dragons should be able to buy some time. That year, when I abandoned our alliance, was unacceptable, so I guess I’ll pay it back in full right here.”

The distorted shadow only left those words, and then it disappeared without a trace.

The pale-faced Mandora trembled, with a tightened grip on his sword. After he ordered the fire dragons on standby to tighten their defenses, he raised his head towards the sky, and saw that the reinforcements he had wished for have finally arrived.

(Can it be… I knew they would come……!)

The problem was, exactly who had come? Depending on the answer, the situation of the battlefield would change greatly. However, it was not his job to worry about this. As he raised his sword, in his heart he felt reassured and confident, and he suddenly launched an attack on the two-headed dragon.

The [Draco Grief] flying Eudemons followed him and took action.

Although they had previously been involved in the small battle with Izayoi and the others, which caused losses in the key air force of [Two Wings], now they had new comrades of Greek monsters―In the center were Stymphalian birds, already in the process of regrouping. With their Gifts of bronze feathers and deadly venom, they could spit out a fog of poison to help solidify their defense. Even though this could only at most bring in the possibility of slowing the two headed dragon down, on the bright side it was enough.

To prevent the poison fog from reaching the refugees, some of the Eudemons were casting whirlwinds.

Among them was a certain swift Eudemon.

It had a vulture for the front part of its body and a lion for the back. This beast, who possessed the body of the king of the land and the sky, although he had lost a wing for a friend, this noble and dignified gryphon was carrying Sala Doltrake, and he descended right by Yu’s side.

“Yu-chan! I’m glad to see you, are you okay?”

“Sala! What are you doing here?”

“How could you ask such a question! Why of course I’m here to help you!”

“But… But… We haven’t made an alliance…”

“What nonsense are you saying! Assisting a friend does not require a reason!”

Swaying her hair, Sala answered without the slightest hesitation. If one looked closely, one could see that her forehead was covered with sweat, making it obvious that she had rushed through a battle to get here hastily.

Sala took no notice of her glinting sweat, and leaped straight off of the gryphon’s back. Her heavy breathing caused her shoulders to rise and fall and her hair was unkempt. This messy appearance was most definitely not one a commander should have.

However, Sala was unconcerned about this matter, and her eyes had a relieved look.

Being able to catch up was what mattered.

Raising the flag of the gryphons up high, Sala gathered her strength and spoke:

“Yu-dono, I will always be an ally with those willing to resist the demon lords. So when a comrade is stuck in a precarious situation, how could I not rush to their side―Isn’t that right, Gry-san.”

The gryphon who lost a wing let out a beastly howl, indicating his agreement.

Yu, who had lost her Gift [Genome Tree], could no longer comprehend the language of the gryphons, but even if she could not understand the words, she clearly understood the meaning behind those words.

(……Sniff……)

It took Yu a lot of willpower to resist the temptation to cry and she almost let out a few tears.

After coming to Little Garden, her first Eudemon friend, and also the opponent of her first Gift game…was a gryphon.

The Gift that she won from him, has saved her from danger multiple times.

Even if you were to say that it looked as if the gryphon’s friendship with Kasukabe Yu was by fate’s design, it would not be an exaggeration. Because it was exactly as so, this great friend was here and declared:

—— “My friend, I have come to assist you.”

“Yu-chan, this place is still dangerous. For now, you should go with the refugees and retreat into the city. Alright, please get on Gry-san’s back!” Sala tightly pulled on the reins, and adjusted the saddle to create space for one more.

Yu wiped off the tears in her eyes, shook her head and told Sala of their comrade’s predicament.

“Sala, don’t worry about us, quickly head to [Kouen City].”

“……? Why?”

“Izayoi is currently fighting by himself, and if we were to lose him again, there will be no one left to hold back the Demon King.”

She talked in an extremely calm tone to explain, however Sala did not fail to catch the hidden meaning behind her words. Sala surveyed Yu’s surroundings, and after confirming that none of her other comrades were nearby, her face exposed a defeated expression.

“I’m sorry, but it seems that we were a little bit too late.”

“…No, if your troops had not arrived here so quickly, even I would be in danger. Besides, the person who needs the most help right now is Izayoi…” “There is no need to worry about that side.”

Sala spoke with absolute confidence in her words and cut off Yu, and then she picked her up.

Next, she raised her right hand into the air and with a swipe, she pulled out a lamb-skin parchment.

“It was because I waited for a good excuse that I arrived so late. I already had some people sent to support him. In fact, it was the strongest group that I have prepared right now.”

The reinforcements sent here to rescue them did not only consist of comrades from [Draco Grief].

Following Sala’s announcement, the lamb-skin parchment let out an even brighter glow.

Knowing why the glowing parchment was emitting such dazzling light, although she had been in a dangerous situation, her heart gradually began to race. If the content of this glowing parchment is what she thinks it is, then this scroll was the best possible solution.

Sala let out a fearless smile, and raised the lamb-skin parchment in her hand up high―

In a flash, the scenery in front of them began to collapse, and the entire world changed.
