Chapter 45: Master of Weapon[edit]

Godless 3B p345.jpg

Her smile proves she is untouchable.

Sumeragi was standing in line.

Godless boku.png

“Makuhari Messe sure is big!”

The bird that had taken him here had left just a bit ago.

A trio of buildings stretched from southeast to northwest. The giant facility had eight internal halls and a total length of nearly 600 meters.

The nearby area was surrounded by trees and contained hotels and similar buildings instead of houses.

Godless boku.png

“It’s weirdly futuristic.”

But Tokyo Bay was close behind it and it all smelled somewhat salty.

And when he looked to the side…

Godless icon-43 bird c.png

“…”

The bird had supposedly departed, but instead it was looking back at him.

Was the bird curious about me or was it reluctant to leave? Either way, I waved at it.

Godless boku.png

“Hey! I dunno what your deal is, but thanks for taking me here!”

Godless icon-43 bird c.png

“…”

The bird nodded and resumed walking away. And…

Godless icon-43 bird c.png

“…”

Godless boku.png

“You don’t have to look back this way! Don’t worry about me!”

Godless icon-43 bird c.png

“…”

The bird nodded again and again resumed walking away. Once it got pretty far…

Godless icon-43 bird c.png

“…”

Godless boku.png

“Again, you don’t have to look back! Is this a longer version of that thing in romcoms where they go ‘I’m glad I looked back and saw her (him) waving’!?”

Godless balancer.png

<Why are you getting so worked up over a wild animal, chimp?>

Godless boku.png

“That thing’s wild!? Really!?”

Godless balancer.png

<The lack of a reaction to being called a chimp makes me wonder if you even count as human anymore. Anyway, that is a roc, so it counts as wild.>

Godless boku.png

“Huh, if you say so. But I sure got here fast. I bet there were some adjustments, but it’s only 9.”

I got in line while I said this. The catalog said to head to the eastern main entrance and to wait in the front event hall, but…

Godless boku.png

“The line goes all the way around Messe!? Seriously!?”

Godless balancer.png

<Seriously. The number of ordinary participants rapidly increased during C38 and more had to wait at the front of the event space, so the planned four event halls of waiting space weren’t enough. Thus, the line had to circle all the way around Makuhari Messe for the first time.>

Godless boku.png

“How long will I have to wait?”

Godless balancer.png

<If nothing about the line changes, about an hour and a half. It breaks up at the entrance, so the line should move faster once you’re close to the event hall.>

I see, I thought and decided to place a towel over my head.

The wind from Tokyo Bay was pretty hot, but it was better than no wind. I held a sports drink and prepared for a long wait.

Godless boku.png

“Now…when will Senpai and the others get here?”

The initial changes occurred at central and south Tokyo.

Of the train tracks running east-to-west through Tokyo, the changes were at the Chuo Line at the center and the Odakyu Line to the south. Destructive power was wielded from the top of the trains running east through the sea of clouds.

Raidou and Shifu were on the Chuo Line.

Godless raidou.png

“Oh! New characters! Take a look!”

Godless shinobu.png

“Would it not help to yell ‘Heyyy!’?”

Bilgamesh and Kidou were on the Odakyu Line.

Godless gil.png

“White Sword!”

Godless ki.png

“You’re starting with that!?”

With that, the sea of clouds split open.

Shifu took a look at her surroundings from atop the running train.

The sea of clouds produced more clouds as it circulated and flowed overhead. There was wind too, so the occasional powerful gust passed through to bring the station into view.

She heard the tearing sound of the train’s passage as she noted the station they had just passed.

Godless shinobu.png

“Kokubunji? Isn’t that a little fast?”

Godless raidou.png

“That must mean this is the Oume Express.”

Tooru looked back after using his long hammer to send a series of attacks into the sea of clouds to the north.

Godless raidou.png

“I was hoping we could make it as far as Shinjuku while acting as a diversion and we might just make it. We’re going to arrive before Bilgamesh and Ki do.”

Godless shinobu.png

“Really?”

Godless balancer.png

<Yes. JR East’s express trains on the Chuo Line are superior to those of their competitors and they skip right past all but the main stations. The strategy of skipping most of the stations began in 1967 and, after the major remodeling of Kokubunji Station in ‘88, the express trains were split between the Chuo Express and the Oume Express.>

Huh? realized Shifu.

Godless shifu akire.png

“The major remodeling of Kokubunji Station? But we didn’t stop there?”

Godless raidou.png

“The Chuo Express stops at Kokubunji, but the Oume Express doesn’t.”

Godless balancer.png

<Yes. Due to the train schedule, the Oume Express departs at about the same time as the limited express, so it skips Kokubunji to get ahead. This continues for a while and it means the Oume Express is the fastest way to travel east to west across Tokyo.>

Godless shifu akire.png

“They do some weird things…”

But she hadn’t noticed this until it was pointed out.

Probably because I’m always chatting with Tooru on the train, she thought with an inner bitter smile.

Godless shinobu.png

“Tooru? This is supposed to be a diversion, but did we catch anyone?”

Godless raidou.png

“Yeah, I think there’s a pretty big one coming, but something else is showing up too.”

She knew what Tooru meant.

The train’s windows opened and bluish-black silhouettes climbed up onto the roof.

Godless raidou.png

“Can you deal with them?”

Godless shinobu.png

“Easily.”

Tooru continued attacking the sky around them while Shifu worked at eliminating the pilgrims climbing up to them.

Godless shinobu.png

“This must mean they’ve ‘noticed’ us. That’s a good thing as far as being a diversion is concerned, but is this going to gradually escalate? I wonder how it’s going for Bil-chan?”

Godless ki.png

“Oh? This train is skipping a lot of stations? Is it a special train?”

Godless balancer.png

<It is the Odakyu Line’s express train. The Odakyu Line began running as the Odawara Line in 1927 and has used different kinds of special trains as they have been invented. But the ‘express’ category is a long-lived one that began back in the first year of ‘27 when all of the tracks were made into double track railways. It briefly stopped running during World War Two, but it resumed after the war and remains one of the main express trains to this day.>

So it has a long history, thought Ki as she kicked down the pilgrim silhouettes trying to climb up onto the roof. Whenever Bilgamesh completed a charge, he would send a White Sword strike into the surrounding area, slicing the sea of clouds with the force of the train’s speed. But…

Godless ki.png

“Did it just catch on something?”

Godless gil.png

“I sense a presence. But it isn’t approaching so easily.”

Godless ki.png

“So is it testing us?”

That was fine. They were a diversion, just like the thunder god couple.

They had a plan.

Before leaving, they had held a meeting at the east end of the club building.

Godless raidou.png

“We spit into the guardian team and the TJ support team and then charge.”

Godless tenma.png

“TJ-senpai is probably taking this route.”

Tenma used a Revelation Board to display a map of Tokyo and the surrounding area.

She indicated a straight line route from Tachikawa to Makuhari Messe.

Godless senpai awate.png

“Doesn’t that cross Tokyo Bay in the middle?”

It did. And it crossed it for 8km.

Godless ki.png

“She’s flying, right? Is that because she has an ibis motif?”

Godless tenma.png

“Correct. In order to catch up to and stay with her, the two charging teams will need an authority capable of crossing the ocean or water.”

Godless poseidon.png

“That would be me and Kido, wouldn’t it?”

You don’t call her Echidna? wondered Raidou. But when he looked to the Scythian representative…

Godless kido.png

“––––––”

Well, maybe that’s how it is with them, decided Raidou.

The Scythian representative was now the human’s mother.

It would be wrong to refer to her by her former motherly name.

Some things changed and some things didn’t. I need to watch out for things like that, he decided.

Godless ki.png

“The guardian team includes Kido, so they’ll be fine. The TJ support team includes Poseidon, so I guess they’ll be fine too? Kido has her motorcycle, but how will the TJ team be traveling? You need to carry multiple people.”

Godless poseidon.png

“I have a way, so don’t worry.”

Okay. If a god as major as him said so, then it had to be fine.

Godless gil.png

“Then what should we do?”

Godless raidou.png

“We’ll act as a diversion.”

Godless raidou.png

“The diversion plan is simple. We draw the waves of pilgrims to us so the charging teams can avoid as much fighting as possible. Unnecessary fighting will only strengthen our opponent. They probably don’t have an upper limit on resources, but they should have an upper limit on instantaneous output. So we draw them to us.”

The thunder god sounded carefree, but a hand soon went up.

Godless beset.png

“Will you be alright? The story responds to numbers and such with even greater power, right?”

Godless raidou.png

“We have a way. The two of us and Bilgamesh’s group can do a lot.”

The thunder god ran his finger along the map of Tokyo.

Godless raidou.png

“So we’ll provoke the story while using the Chuo Line and the Odakyu Line to travel across center and south Tokyo. The two lines are a good distance apart, so we can gather up a lot of the pilgrim waves while also ‘showing off’ that we’re approaching Makuhari which is to the southeast from Tachikawa.”

Godless tenma.png

“I was going to ask why not use the Seibu Line, but that’s to the north, which wouldn’t be much of a provocation.”

Ki hadn’t been in the city long enough to have a sense for those things. But…

Godless ki.png

“So we provoke the pilgrims on our way to Shinjuku in order to pull as many as possible away from the two charging teams?”

Godless raidou.png

“Right. And when the two charging teams cross Tokyo Bay, we meet up in Shinjuku and run around Yamanote to reach Tokyo Bay from Tokyo Station. Makuhari Messe is on the bay coast. If we cause trouble to the west, it will distract from the charging teams crossing the bay and it will draw away the pilgrims who would have appeared nearer Messe.”

Godless beisu.png

“From that…it sounds like the diversion teams have the hardest job.”

Godless raidou.png

“Which is why we meet up in Shinjuku. With twice the strength, we’ll have a lot more options available to us. And it’s our job to cause a scene, so we can use any moves we want.”

Godless shinobu.png

“We’ll probably be having the most fun.”

Ki’s partner nodded at that.

Godless gil.png

“We join forces to double our strength. …No, let’s try to triple or quadruple it.”

And back to the present.

Ki used Flying Disk attacks to knock the pilgrim silhouettes from the train as they climbed up from the windows, but then she noticed something. And just to make sure…

Godless ki.png

Detect Monster!”

She activated an Auth Spell. The spell had been converted for use in this divine world and it had its proper effect.

Godless ki.png

I can see through walls and such to locate my opponent!

The foggy sea of clouds remained, but she could see the enemy through it.

Godless ki shinken.png

“A giant!?”

She saw a vaguely-defined but somehow star-shaped silhouette that stood at least 10m tall. It was near the stormy fog created by the waves of the sea of clouds. The silhouette passed right through the city’s houses without damaging them, but…

Godless ki shinken.png

“It’s coming!”

She cast the spell on Bilgamesh too.

A moment later, she saw her partner standing on the train’s front car, a glowing white sword in his hand.

Godless shinobu.png

“Here it comes!”

Shifu saw it.

A giant. The vaguely-defined colossus looked just like the pilgrim silhouettes except a lot bigger.

However, it wasn’t alone. The track out ahead of the train vanished into the fog, but several bluish-black colossi were in evidence beyond its rippling.

Shifu knew that wouldn’t be the end of it either.

From here on, this class of colossal shadow and “power” would be their opponent.

So she spoke.

Godless shinobu.png

“Tooru!”

Her partner was already raising his weapon atop the train’s front car. It’s great how often he’s been doing this lately, she thought while speaking to him.

Godless shinobu.png

“This is looking fun, isn’t it!?”

A moment later, two war gods at two different points in the city raised their voices simultaneously.

Godless gil.png

“White Sword!”

Godless raidou.png

“Thor’s Hammer!”

Godless senpai awate.png

“Eh? Eh? What was that?”

Train tracks seemed to race above the sea of clouds on either side of us and the spreading fog ripples as something moved within.

Far to the north and south, white waves formed and giant silhouettes stood up.

Godless senpai awate.png

“The pilgrim silhouettes are giant now!?”

Godless kido.png

“That must mean the diversion is having an effect.”

I looked to the right – the south – from the rear seat of Kido-san’s motorcycle.

Looking a bit back from our position, I could detect the light through my own hair blowing in the wind.

Godless senpai shinken.png

“The White Sword.”

Wait, do you pronounce the w in “sword”? Eh, whatever. I’m no linguist. But it did split the fog over a distance of several hundred meters.

No. This action had already been happening from time to time, just on a smaller scale.

This time was different because…

Godless icon-44 jyunrei c.png

“–––––!!”

The giant pilgrim silhouette was blown away. It was chopped into five pieces that flew away.

Godless kido.png

“Similar body parts are coming from the Chuo Line. Shifu-san and Raidou-san are doing their job too.”

“Yes,” I agreed when I saw something.

Godless icon-44 jyunrei c.png

“…!”

Several pilgrim silhouettes appeared as if born from between the white waves.

They were headed toward the diversion. Their path took them past us. So…

Godless kido.png

“They are being drawn to the others. …Time to speed up!”

Wow, I thought as Kido-san tensed her body and increased our speed.

We were moving so fast I felt like we were flying. And we were driving along…

Godless senpai awate.png

“U-um, the highway!?”

Godless balancer.png

<This is the Chuo Expressway. But in a bit, you will use the Takaido Interchange to reach the Shuto Expressway Route 4 Shinjuku Line, won’t you?>

Godless kido.png

“Yes. We will be using that route.”

Shortly afterwards, the motorcycle bounced. We were moving fast enough for slight distortions in the pavement to affect us that much.

Godless senpai awate.png

“I-isn’t this a little fast!?”

Godless kido.png

“Yes. We are moving at around 200km/h.”

Godless senpai awate.png

“I take back the ‘a little’!”

Godless balancer.png

<The GSX1100 series boasts a top speed of more than 230km/h, so it can still go faster.>

Godless kido.png

“And this…speedometer, is it called? It goes up to 240.”

Godless senpai awate.png

“Huh!? Isn’t that way above Japan’s default legal speed limit or whatever it’s called!?”

Godless balancer.png

<Yes. In 1990, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers have chosen to stop domestic sales of models of 750cc or greater and the default legal speed limit on highways is 80km/h. The standards for the former will be lifted this year, but that is too late for the GSX1100SM which goes on sale this year, and the 750cc or greater models must be reverse-imported from overseas.

<Also,> continued Balancer.

Godless balancer.png

<The GSX1100SM was designed as a reproduction of the series’s initial model, the SZ, while taking advantage of the technical improvements they had developed since. So for Suzuki’s 70th year celebration, the defunct line was brought back and only 1000 were made. The SZ was said to be the world’s fastest when it was released and the SM was also a high power machine capable of producing 111 horsepower and other details were fine-tuned as well. For example, the front windshield – called the screen – was added “because it’ll be necessary when driving at more than 200km/h.”>

Godless senpai awate.png

“C-can you sum that up for me!?”

Godless balancer.png

<Why are you riding that deathtrap?>

Godless senpai awate.png

“Right!? Right!? Kido-san, why are we riding this!?”

Godless kido.png

“Izumi said I would look good on a white motorcycle when we were watching that tokusatsu show, so I did some research. There’s this Something-or-Other Mask show where the hero rides this.”

Godless balancer.png

<You mean Nebula Mask Machineman, I assume? The hero, Takase Ken, rides what is clearly a GSX750S, the domestic version of the Katana, but there must have been legal issues because the motorcycle’s name is never mentioned in the show and it is only ever referred to as “a vehicle resembling a motorcycle”.>

Godless senpai awate.png

“C-can you sum that up for me!?”

Godless balancer.png

<You are essentially riding 1:1 scale tokusatsu merch. Oh, and Machineman was called that because “he rides an incredible machine”.>

Godless kido.png

“Eh!? Then would that make me Machinegirl?”

Godless balancer.png

<Girl?>

Balancer was within arm’s reach, so I hit him with a 200+ km/h slap.

They spun more than expected and stayed with us, so they must have fixed their coordinates relative to ours.

Godless balancer.png

<Wh-what was that for!? A hit that hard makes me want to reinitialize myself!>

Godless senpai awate.png

“Shut up. Saying those things when it really doesn’t work is what makes Kido-san so cute, so you shouldn’t point it out like that!”

Godless kido awate.png

“You’re not helping, you know?”

As if in response, explosions of power erupted behind us on the left and right.

I looked back to see several colossal silhouettes heading this way.

Godless kido.png

“The big ones are no longer heading to the diversions!”

On the Chuo Line, the Oume Express to Tokyo had become the center of a battlefield.

The enemy silhouettes appeared endlessly from beyond the sea of clouds. Their shape was different, but their size…

Godless raidou.png

“Reminds me a lot of the giants of Jotunheim!”

Or had they been a little bigger? No, these ones would probably get that size as the fighting continued. So this was the opening skirmish – the training.

Godless raidou.png

“So let’s do this!”

Back at the club building, Kuwajiri held a megaphone to her ear. She had borrowed it from one of the sports clubs.

She could hear the sounds of Raidou and Shifu’s battle.

She was pleased to hear it was an exciting battle. But there was a problem.

Godless kuwajiri.png

“Balancing the fight. If they’re too powerful, I think the enemy will only grow bigger. They can’t be too strong, but they still need to be strong enough to deal with as many of the enemy as they can.”

Godless demeter.png

“Sure, but the more they fight, the more the enemy will recognize us as ‘powerful’. Got a plan for that?”

Godless kuwajiri.png

“Yes. The enemy seems to have a group consciousness, but their attacks come individually. So the trick is to respond to each of them individually without making them give up.”

Godless demeter.png

“What’s wrong with making them give up?”

“Well,” said Kuwajiri.

Godless kuwajiri.png

“When they give up is when they get stronger. So it’s important to keep them thinking they can still win it at their current strength.”

Godless salacia.png

“And because they have a group consciousness, if they think that, they’ll all act according and the newly created ones won’t be stronger either. Right?”

Kuwajiri felt bad for thinking that was a rare person to get help from.

Even though she was their club advisor. She would probably be joining their conversations more in the future.

Godless kuwajiri.png

“It’s possible the enemy can boost their strength after they form by fusing together and they may already be doing that below the clouds. But that ‘fusion’ will take time and buying time is what we want.”

Godless salacia.png

“But how do you keep them from giving up? In the end, they will find out who’s stronger and who’s weaker when you fight, right?”

Godless kuwajiri.png

“There are a few ways. We figured that much out during our camping trip.”

It comes down to how many different moves you have, thought Bilgamesh.

Godless gil.png

I can’t strike the enemy with our strength.

No longer was he using brute force to gather attention like at the beginning.

Instead…

Godless gil.png

“I must demonstrate technique.”

He produced many forms of power in his hands. They were quite large since they were meant for use against giants, but…

Godless gil.png

“Gauntlet.”

Godless gil.png

“White Sword.”

Godless gil.png

“Red Line Shield.”

He could use this equipment to crush his enemy.

But he couldn’t use it all in the same way.

Godless gil.png

“Cut.”

Godless gil.png

“Jab.”

Godless gil.png

“Sweep.”

Godless gil.png

“Slam.”

High, middle, and low attacks. Not to mention advancing on, withdrawing from, circling around, and leaping at the enemy to create a vast number of different attack methods.

He chose something different for each and every enemy.

It was possible.

Godless gil.png

“Of course it is.”

That was what it meant to be a war god.

A war god was worshiped by every last warrior technique and ability.

So he could do this. It came as naturally as breathing.

Bilgamesh saw the enemy welling up from the ground up ahead. With Ki’s spell, he managed to detect eight new ones.

He summoned the White Sword into his right hand.

First, he swung up and to the left while advancing on the enemy.

Godless gil.png

“One.”

Not stopping afterwards, he spun to the left.

He activated the Red Line Shield on his left arm.

By turning, he directed his back towards the direction of the train’s motion. One of the giants saw that as an opening and crouched down to throw its right fist straight out toward him.

He could sense it without looking. So while turning around, he struck the enemy’s fist with a backhand shield bash using the Red Line Shield.

He pushed through the impact, causing the enemy to split apart and collapse starting from its fist.

Godless gil.png

“Two.”

The backhand shield bash left his body wide open.

A giant out in front of him sent an open-hand jab toward his exposed torso. The attack pierced through the collapsing second giant from the back.

Bilgamesh judged that to be a good move.

He activated the Jet Boots on his feet. And while turning, he made a rapid back dash to put some distance between them.

The extra space meant the enemy’s jab arrived right in front of him without actually reaching him.

He used the White Sword to slice through the enemy’s jabbing hand from right to left.

Godless gil.png

“Three.”

But the enemy group was already moving. That jabbing one had acted as a diversion while two others sent roundhouse kicks toward him from diagonally out on the left and right.

The right one first, then the left one.

They were using brute force. If he fought back with brute force of his own, they would feel the need to boost their strength further. So he instead chose to jump down.

The enemy lacked the skill to alter the course of their kicks.

The kicks passed over his head as he slid. He aimed for the moment the two rotating legs overlapped and sent a shield bash up from below.

The two giants’ kicking legs were knocked upwards, throwing off their balance and blowing them away.

Godless gil.png

“Four and five.”

Bilgamesh stood up and activated Spear toward the enemy approaching from the front.

Godless ki.png

“Oh, a rare weapon.”

White Sword could not be extended, so this weapon could reach further.

And reach it did.

As the giant attempted to crush him between its hands, the spear made of ether light pierced right into the center of its chest.

Godless gil.png

“Six.”

He pulled Spear out and stood it upright atop the front car’s roof.

And right after he used White Sword to cut down an enemy approaching from the front right, the upright spear acted as a counterattack to the giant leaping down from the sky up ahead.

Both giants scattered into light.

Godless gil.png

“Seven and eight. …There’s no end to them, is there?”

Raidou thought.

Godless raidou.png

I bet Bilgamesh is loving this.

Some loud noises were coming from the south. But no two were the same. Everything he heard had some difference to it.

Godless shinobu.png

“Not bad, Bil-chan!”

Godless raidou.png

“I had a pretty good idea thanks to the camping trip, but he is damn good at this.”

Raidou was referring to the oral combat training.

Godless raidou.png

“If you can verbally describe your actions, it means they’re an established technique inside you. And that means you can do more than what you can verbalize. To respond accurately to your opponent while also not falling into repetitive actions…that takes a technique-first view of combat.”

Godless shinobu.png

“And when you react like that, the enemy sees you using every last one of your attacks to fight back. That creates the illusion that you’re struggling to keep up with their strength.”

Godless raidou.png

“This enemy doesn’t seem all that intelligent, so this should be even more effective on them.”

It was all about overcoming strength with gentleness.

But as he fought, something occurred to Raidou.

Godless raidou.png

“None of the enemies are starting out on the tracks.”

Kuwajiri was also questioning the distribution of pilgrims.

Everyone’s divine communication fields still displayed “no signal” on her Revelation Board. That likely meant they still hadn’t been accepted as characters in “the story”, but not being able to contact Raidou and the others was troublesome. But…

Godless demeter.png

“I’ve summoned Metera Thesmophoros’s visual system as an authority to keep an eye on things, but aren’t the pilgrims clumped together weirdly where we can see them through the clouds?”

Godless kuwajiri.png

“Agreed. I’m seeing the same thing.”

This was statistical data.

Her perception Auth Spell was primarily used to instantly count numbers of plants, birds, etc., but it came in handy here too. She counted the pilgrims glimpsed through the clouds and overlaid that data on a map of Tokyo.

Godless kuwajiri.png

“They don’t appear to be using some major transportation routes like the railroads or the rivers.”

Godless demeter.png

“Why not? Those things are so convenient for moving around.”

Godless salacia.png

“Maybe the story’s author didn’t expect anyone to be traveling that way.”

Godless kuwajiri.png

“I think that is correct. One ‘advantage’ the pilgrim silhouettes were given is the ability to pass through buildings and other obstacles, so there are buildings along the routes they are using.”

But…

Godless kuwajiri.png

“The author Souka Souko must have subconsciously avoided certain areas when drawing the scene. The railroads are dangerous because trains use them and an Egyptian god wouldn’t want to defile a river. I think we are seeing a recreation of the author’s sensibilities here.”

Godless demeter.png

“That would give the thunder god and that group an easier time of it. As for the Echidna’s group…”

“Yes,” agreed Kuwajiri with confidence.

Godless kuwajiri.png

“Souka Souko has never used the Chuo Expressway, so she may think of it as dangerous due to all the fast-moving vehicles. I think the pilgrim silhouettes will generally avoid choosing that route. But enough time has passed that we could see the pilgrims begin making attacks on the expressway.”

Godless demeter awate.png

“So will they be there or not!? Make up your mind!”

Didn’t I say it depends on how much time has passed?

Kido was flying along.

While taking the Chuo Expressway east, she had just passed the Chofu Interchange.

She was still far from the sea, but this marked about 20% of the total distance traveled.

From here on, it was a three lane road.

Godless kido.png

“I thought this would make it wider, but there are hills on either side.”

There were a few overpasses crossing the road north-south. She wondered what they were for.

Godless balancer.png

<Those roads were made to reach Jindaiji, which is known for its soba, the Jindaiji Castle ruins, and the surrounding area. The overpasses connect those areas that were split by the expressway. Also, this terrain is somewhat linked to Senpai-san.>

Godless senpai awate.png

“Eh? Are these the Tokyo version of the big boobs hills!?”

Godless balancer.png

<Sorry, but it is nothing like that. The terrain you are passing between takes the form of hills, but they are actually fluvial terraces created by the Tama River eroding away the accumulated volcanic ash and sediment left by Mount Fuji’s eruptions.>

Godless senpai awate.png

“Eh!? So if it was Mount Fuji, does that mean my sister was responsible!?”

Godless balancer.png

<It would be more accurate to say it was your sister plus the Tama River and other rivers.>

Godless kido.png

“That means it isn’t just here, doesn’t it?”

Godless balancer.png

<Yes. There mus be enough sediment for the river to erode in the first place. And since Tokyo was once covered by Mount Fuji’s eruptions, its terrain – especially from the center to the south – was primarily formed by the Tama River eroding that sediment over the years. So in ancient times, Tokyo’s “ground” was higher than the tops of the slopes on either side of you now.

<Also,> said Balancer.

Godless balancer.png

<Areas where the eroding river’s course change creates an especially steep slope are called terraces. This terrace begins east of Tachikawa with the Fuchu Terrace running along the Tama River and joins the Kokubunji Terrace along the southern Nogawa River to create the terrain which is high in the west and north and low in the east and south. The Shindaiji “hills” you are passing through now are leftover from when the erosion first began and are known as the Musashino Terrace. Because the volcanic sediment was not washed away here, the region is a verdant land and subterranean water flows out from the slopes carved out by the Tama River, making it a very nice land indeed. But why don’t you know any of this, Senpai-san?>

Godless senpai awate.png

“…”

Godless senpai awate.png

“Does this mean I may have been a shut-in for a very long time?”

Godless kido awate.png

“Wouldn’t you know?”

Still, it was nice that the terrain had been carved out like this.

Kido squeezed the accelerator and poured on the speed down the three-lane road.

Godless balancer.png

<Do be careful. When the Chuo Expressway was being constructed from Chofu to Mitaka, some residents were forced out to get these three lanes. But from Mitaka onward, you enter Setagaya, which was already becoming an affluent area back then. They were unable to get as much land and the road narrows back to only two lanes.>

Godless kido awate.png

“Th-this road is less reliable than I thought.”

Godless balancer.png

<Yes. Partially due to the trouble getting land, the Chuo Expressway was built west from Hachioji in 1967, but it took until 1976 for it to reach the city center east of Hachioji. This just shows how difficult it was to get an expressway to Tokyo during the postwar recovery.>

And just as Balancer said that, a silhouette dropped onto the road. This was something we hadn’t seen yet.

Godless senpai awate.png

“That’s a pilgrim silhouette!”

I saw confusion as we raced toward it.

Godless icon-44 jyunrei c.png

“…!?”

Godless kido.png

“They must not have expected us to use this road!”

I had more or less figured that out by this point. The pilgrim silhouettes didn’t seem to know the expressway existed.

That had allowed us to make it this far without encountering any, but…

Godless icon-44 jyunrei c.png

“…!!”

Waves of pilgrims poured over the north and south slopes, flooding toward us.

I also could see countless silhouettes crossing the soundproofing panels and flooding the expressway far up ahead.

Godless balancer.png

<The pilgrim sea is making some big moves with the diversion teams as well. For that, they must be crossing the previously unused Chuo Expressway.>

Godless senpai shinken.png

“Does that mean the diversions are working against us?”

Godless balancer.png

<No. This is the greatest effect you could want for your goal, Because…>

Godless kido.png

“For them to ‘find’ us here where they didn’t expect anyone means that we have been accepted as an irregular part of ‘the story’, doesn’t it?”

Godless balancer.png

<Exactly. The story has been shaken by the diversion, so it has finally accepted that there are characters it did not expect in places it did not expect.>

Then I knew exactly what we had to do.

The area ahead was overflowing with waves of pilgrims who were rushing toward us now that they had seen us. They were still human size.

And if they didn’t see us as a threat…

Godless kido.png

“Charge!”

Interlude[edit]

Godless kido.png

“Come to think of it, we will be carrying three including Izumi on the way back.”

Godless senpai awate.png

“You mean you’re going to let him ride with us!? Like really do it, Kido-san!?”
