Hi I was reading one of my favorite novels and noticed a post that applied here. I quickly summarize the post.

Basically someone has posted some novels on wattpad without the translator's permission and only the "Author" of the translation is able to get it remove them. The novels and number of chapters are as follows:

Could I ask others to please translate/fully upload these chapters to Baka-Tsuki? There happens to be a few fully translated but not uploaded. As well as, it seems that chapter 38 was half-translated then left. So far, I've watched and waited for it to be completed, but there hasn't been any sign in the past two months. Please, I must ask some of you to upload those chapters and/or translate them. I wish to further continue this wonderful story, and I believe many others feel the same.

---Hey, ladies and gents, I am a new guy here, and I have a selfish request. I've read the LN up to Chapter 37, and it's gotten fairly bad. There are a lot of minor mistakes past Chapter 31, and I can fix those with a smile. However, the story is visibly deteriorating. (I'm a pretty mellow fellow, and can read bad books without complaint, but this is a step worse.) It's not a book. "Eh?" Well, the thing is that the surroundings/location are invisibly changing at a rather frightening pace. "Whatever do you mean by that?" Well, here is an example:

We headed to the weaver with the threads.

Weaver: "This is some unusual material, I could do a lot with this. Go to the dressing room and measure your size. I should be able to complete the dress tonight. You can pick it up later."

---And another:

"Th-this is so fast..."

"It's more important to get your mother to drink that medicine right. Don't drop it."

"Ye-yes!"

The man went into his house. I followed after him inside. I still hadn't gotten my payment after all.

Coming up to it, it was a regular rural commoner house.

---As you can see, the actions are described, but the surroundings change with little to no notice. (The guy who got a ride mysteriously warped from the road, to the from of his house.) It almost seems as if this whole story came from a manga. All the conversations are there, as well as the actions. But, the surroundings that are portrayed in the pictures are left out. I want to change this, but that means adding sentences, or at least sentence fragments. It will be a noticeable change, but also (in my opinion) a welcome one. (Otherwise, it is a manga without the pictures. Even the speakers are labeled, as if the picture is supposed to be there.) So, what say you to this proposition? Is it okay to mess with the translation, or should it be left as is?

Just so you know in advance, I'm not actually involved in this project, but let me clarify a few things~

1. If you're reading from BT, this is a translation of a web novel, not a light novel. The web novel which is available to read for free online does not go through a professional editing process / refinement like the light novel does, so it's more like a draft. This will lead to lower quality in the text itself in many cases. Depending on the Author's literary skill, it could still read very well, but as a rule of thumb it'll be the inferior of the two.

2. BT hosts translations. Once you add "content" to a translation, it's no longer a translation. Editing a translation is focused on readability / flow of words, at most taking the liberty of changing specific terms / references to fit the language audience it's pointed towards. So generally adding scenery would not be okay.

Just trying to give you a quick answer, hopefully I was helpful~

1. The web novel, what is it? By draft, do you perchance mean that this story is the work of someone's writing for fun? I cannot read Japanese, so I don't know what the source is like. If the translation we get is direct, it is very odd. Now that I've read farther into the novel, I have seen the type of location teleportation mentioned above in a much larger magnitude. It is especially obvious in the fight with Glass in chapters 52 and 53. The translation seems to be... partial. At times, its almost as if its a summary, and not a story. Once again, I do not know if the real author writes in such a fashion or not. To me, it seems like the wording was simply taken from a manga, translated, and posted here. Can anyone verify if the real Japanese version is like this? Is the original a book or a manga?

2. I agree with you in regards with translations. This story is not mine, and I have no right to indiscriminately change it. What I wish for, is a well edited version of what we have so far. Not just in terms of punctuation and simple grammar changes but, as you put it, a "flow of words." I don't aim to change the story or to add nonexistent details. I wish to polish this 'gem' that I have found, and make it beautiful. (I say this after reading SAO and Mahouka. Were they professionally edited?)

Oh, and to see what I mean by all this talk, please take a look at Chapter 79. Please, please, give me a reply. I want to know if I should edit this story or not. I don't want to put a lot of effort into it if it will not be appreciated.

1. A web novel is pretty much someone writing for fun. However, it's semi-serious, and if you do good enough, and catch enough attention, your work could turn into a light novel. All the text is online, and a link exists at the bottom of the baka-tsuki page. Google Chrome's built-in translation function can give you a basic idea of chapter titles, as well as text.

2. Tate no Yuusha is a much more 'open' project that others like DxD, Campione, SAO, and Mahouka (god damn yen pressǃǃǃ). Many, many translators help, and anonymous newbies often take a random chapter, machine translate it, and try to post it as official translation. Needless to say, the results are often...less than desirable. We're damn lucky to have Yoraikun and Kookie - Yoraikun translates at the fastest pace I've ever seen, and his work is of excellent quality, especially now that he's experienced. Kookie edits well, and often fixes up the messes left by newbie translators, which we can't touch since we can't TLC. And she also translates from time to time as well. 3. If you're looking for appreciation, go elsewhere. All the appreciation goes to translators; the majority of readers never bother to learn who edited the text they're reading. It's a thankless job, and the only thing you get is your own sense of self-accomplishment. And if your edits conflict with the tastes/opinions of others, you may instead face dissatisfaction, editing wars, and blah blah. The people working here are collectively referred to as 'baka-tsuki' on Yoraikun's comments page. All credit for your work is attributed to the community as a whole.

It shouldn't be taken down TBH, the novel wasn't even being translated in any manner. The webnovel is free on all sources, this should not be taken down. This page is pretty out of the ordinary tbh, I hope they take a proper look into this. This is nonsense.

Notices have been posted on both Yoyoyo5678's (who added the cessation policy label) and Zzhk's (who froze the project and locked out edits) talk pages, informing them that the web novel hasn't been licensed. ===Project Update===

I see the merits of "Web Novel is different from Published Light Novel" argument.

As certain instances of how the author allows free reading of the web novel online in Japan, while having a published hard-copy version in commercial circulation which apparently is not a conflict of interest (usually publisher will require the author to takedown related prior works as part of the publishing deal, so don't ask me why this hasn't happened).

However if we wish to secure the rest of the project as a "web novel" drastic changes will have to be employed. Mainly, we must mimic the web novel as close as possible and not include anything from the published novel version.

i.e. no images/scan from the published version.

Unfortunately the decision to remove volume 01 and 02 is a forgone conclusion, they must be sacrificed for the good of this project survival.

I'm sure you will all be able to find copies of these two earlier volumes outside in the wild interweb, just not on Baka-Tsuki.

:: Not true. If you look at the LN's main page, you can see if it's published, a web novel, or both (like Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari). If a publisher (say, Yen Press) licensed a published LN for official english translation, they can ask Baka-Tsuki (or other translation group) to remove any fan translation of it (like what happened with Sword Art Online). :: Think of the web novel as less independant from the Light novel because in reality it is a rough draft of the storythat was published online and in most cases it is taken down when it gets a light novel. So technically Yen press owns rights to all versions of any novel they publish in the language it was licensed in and thus the web novel would still be a problem especially if it greatly resembles the novel to the point that any translations could be mistaken as plagerism from the official english translation. Even if it is not mis-labeled as plagerism I don't think that the translation would be able to continue on baka-tsuki without bringing them any trouble and would not be to surprised if the others were taken down due to DMCA. <br /><br />I would advise that anyone with translations of any lisenced novel's tranlstions ongoing seperate it from any translations of unlicensed novels so that in the case that you get taken down the other translations can continue unhindered and you cause no harm to baka-tsuki by having a project which has a licensed english translation on your site. Also If your translations of said licensenced novel or it's web novel don't get taken down even better because people still get the translation you can continue to translate everything else without worry of it going down with the other translations and it would be easy just to delete the external site. If anyone really want I will set up a wordpress for the webnovel translations of any one project so that all the other translations are safe in the worst case scenario. :Fair enough but who knows if it will be taken down in the future and it can't hurt to be careful. I was also talking quite generally on purpose because it can apply to a lot of WN the turn into light novels then get an official english translation in the future. Anyways I will admit if the story diverges and the WN is still available I'm sure that the translation of the WN will be fine for the time being. Also what I meant by rough draft is an earlier version, some stories have earlier versions that are later adapted and improved, as long as the core of the story is still the same you can't really say that it's completely seperate and even rough drafts will have some divergence and earlier drafts even more so. I would say a Web novel is the author giving out a raw form of his story and the light novel is the polished version so really the web novel is a rough draft of sorts, it's just one that has not undergone heavy editing. Maybe for most light novels, but in this case the story is VERY different. Even the first four books are pretty different, and the plot goes in a wildly different direction after that. And if it hasn't been taken in several years it's unlikely to be taken down anytime soon. I mean, the novel finished a while back, and it's still up.

Why not leave the Web Novel up, and take it down IF it's requested? The fact remains that the web novel and the light novel are two completely different series. - Anon

Apparently, Volumes 1 and 2 and definitely dead, but nothing was said of 3 and 4. I pretty much dissolved those sections, and created new arcs. If those parts get deleted anyways though, I won't complain. All images I could find from the light novel in this entire project have been removed.

Also - since the Third Wave Arc also included two volume 2 chapters, I included those. If you want those removed, tell me on my talk page.

Anyone up translation side storys of that nice novel? Sadly we have here now only 'christmas one' while next 2 are left on their own. I'm not sure if you plan to change it or not - if not then maybe we should add links to outer sites like with Yari no Yuusha no Yarinaoshi?
