Amongst other things, is the four tildes (~~~~) really necessary? The first case doesn't seem to apply it right ("Poor girl... ~~~~") and the other case suggests a long drawn-out sound, which is more replicated in a drawn-out word in English.

Not exactly necessary, that's exactly like you said - a long drawn-out sound. But since that is in the original, I translated them and my proofreader just leave it that. And the ---- mark usually mean a few second of silence or a suddenly realization.Chaos (talk)
